Nice looking 914. Why seperate the motor from it?

Posted by: Rand Sep 4 2008, 01:34 PM

And a Rennshifter? Looks like a nice car. I was also wondering why a donor? Got a bad hell hole?

Posted by: carr914 Sep 4 2008, 01:53 PM

Isn't this the car that was on eBay a couple of weeks ago with a Buy-It-Now of $22,800?. Only bid to $13,600. Looks and sounds like a nice conversion.

How much for the roller?

Posted by: messix Sep 4 2008, 02:33 PM

lets see idea.gif a really clean '74 switched back to a 4 = 8-9 k easy, and convert a 75 or 76 to a six goes from maybe a 5-6 k car to 12-13k car = money way ahead.

just a possibilty

Posted by: Cupomeat Sep 4 2008, 02:37 PM

Ok, so the only idea here is to bring a 74 back to a stock 4 as it is worth more than a 75-76 stock 4?

I can't see the logic still.

Of course, some people just like to change things and that is login in itself.

Posted by: Root_Werks Sep 4 2008, 02:37 PM

Someone got a six laying around? Talk nice to Craig and he might, mind you might just know someone who can throw in another six instead of the 2.0-4. idea.gif ......Since it'll be all apart anyway.

i doubt it sold for 19k, and the figures i used are prolly no where near accurate. clean nice cars are going for alot more than i can believe. craig isn't knew to this and i'm sure he isn't gonna lose any money on this deal. i bet he has a buyer for both cars, and he won't be losing money on either deal.

Not my car Rich, but after seeing both cars the owners yellow 914-4 is simply a better car. Both are nice examples of 914's, but the blue one has had AC in it at one time and a couple of repairs done to it. The yellow 4cyl is much more original and the owner has spent time and money making it really nice. Just wants more power.

To whoever picks up the blue car, they'll be getting a great start onto what ever way they want to go. It's going back to Camp 914 as a roller and the engine/trans seperate.

Oh Troy, did you try my cell? I'm working on both cars everynight this week. Swing on by. beerchug.gif

Jim Chambers - where ya been?!!!

Hi Sean,

2 years ago my wife retired and we moved 300 miles south to
Ashland, OR. Before the move I sold my 2 914's, kept a 928. Couldn't stay off the internet and bought a very nice '76 914 from Maine in Sept. '06. In April '07 sold the 914 and 928 and bought a super nice 912 targa. Decided it would be my only toy car. Then decided no more old Porshes, sold the 912 and my wife's SLK, bought a '06 Carrera last April. We would be a two car family like normal people (Audi Wagon is the "family" car, us and 2 dogs). I have only a 2-car garage but have a lift so can store 3. Told wife I was going to sell the lift. She said no, wait at least a year (she didn't trust me). She was right. I made it from April to August. Found a 1-owner '70 914 on Craigs List in Weed, CA ,75 miles south of Ashland. So, I'm baaack! And glad to be here too!

Posted by: Root_Werks Sep 11 2008, 08:12 AM

The blue 914 was loaded up and brought down to rhodyguy's (Kevins) place to be picked back up by CAMP914. The owner decided to leave the blue car as a roller and sell the 2.0 seperate from the car. The blue car is all still plumbed with the external oil cooler and holes/provisions for a factory style 914-6 oil tank so it'll hopefully find a good home again soon.

From here begins the long road of assembling the yellow 914. I haven't started doing much on that one yet. 90% of time has been spent getting to this point on the blue car. Michelle and I didn't get home until around 11PM last night. Man, I am sleepy. wacko.gif

Car is a "diamond in the rough". All original, no rust found yet. Irish green/tan (factory paint) without appearance group (no sail vinyl or chrome bumpers). I'll post some "before" pics soon. At my speed it will take a couple of months to do the detail work it needs.
Interesting history. PO bought it new in St. Louis while in graduate school after army duty. Became an overseas US teacher (shop) and took the car while teaching 4 years in Panama Canal Zone in early '70's. Has "turista" stickers from several Central American countries because he and wife drove it back to the states from there. After that it remained state side as he did 17 years in Saudi Arabia and most recently Camaroon. They came home every summer and that's when the car was driven. Has only 111K miles. He just retired and decided he wanted to replace it with a Boxster.

That is a great story. I hope you can manage to keep the stickers in place and in pristine condition...its what gives these cars a history...

I friend of mine if finishing up a 356A that has a similar world travel history.
To bad all the stickers are gone, but he did snag a great vintage suit case to put on the rear lugggage rack that has alot of the same stickers, and he is buying stickers as he can find them to complete the "story" of the car...

So cool where these cars have been and the things they have seen...

The blue roller is all sad to be without a power plant. Won't someone please give her a good home and get her back on the road? Details in the classifieds section smile.gif

what happened to the strong 2.0 liter four- is it for sale

The motor is now back at Camp and ready for a new home. She comes COMPLETE and ready to go. Plug'n'play! Fuel injection, powdercoated tin (manifolds, too), K&N, Pertronix electronic ignition, blue coil, external oil cooler (grill-mounted) with modified raintray...everything...even an easy-drain oil change valve. Clutch assembly, too! Asking $4,000 or best offer, which I think is very fair, given its completeness and proven reliability. Dynoed at ~115hp (limited by the stock FI), while still remaining fuel efficient. Properly broken in, does not leak a drop, completely reliable. Only 7K miles. Still under warranty. And very fun!

OK, end sale pitch smile.gif

(I'm a little ashamed of how dusty/dirty the engine is in photo below...but, unfortunately, it's the only pix I have. She's usually cleaner.)

Wirring is non-exsistant due to the blue donor conversion having the harnes cut out, so I didn't have anything to bring over to the yellow car unless I wanted to rob parts from the perfectly good running 2.0 FI I pulled out. Not an option so I dug through my stash and found what I needed. Whew! Now onto getting everything wired up.

I'll be working on it after about 5PM each day until it's done. Swing on by anytime.

Duc - those rims look amazing! It'll be great to get the car back down on it's shoes again. I know 914's love jackstands, but even they get tired of them after a while. biggrin.gif

brian, if by team, you mean me sitting tight and leaving dan alone to work his magic, then yes, we make a good team wink.gif

my car's a '75, too. back-dated bumpers. color is not quite stock (viper yellow, which is a little lighter than what was on the car originally - don't recall orig color off the top of my head...it wasn't canary yellow...one of the other offerings for '75).

hope you get your car running soon. hopefully you have another 914 you're driving? not having mine for a month has been tough - i don't know how others can manage so long while working on theirs. yup, TC's HEs came just in time - it's getting wet and cold here. would not have been pleasant driving w/o them, for sure. even back a month ago when i drove the donor blue car back from california, i was freezing during the night drive. i'm wussy that way - i like being able to feel my toes smile.gif

Muchas gracias, Joseph. Yeah, the powdercoater did a good job. I'm not usually a polished-wheel kinda guy (I much prefer the satin/anodized look of the stock finish), but I think it's a good choice for a yellow car, especially w/ chrome bumpers. Plus, polishing & powdercoating was less than half of traditional refinishing. (For those considering the latter, Wheel Enhancement does really amazing work, BTW. I had them do the wheels for my other car, and the result far exceeded my expectations!)

With the wheels all shiny-new, I think I'm going to have to dress up my tires now. Yikes. I never thought I would turn into one of "those" guys. Haha.

Got Duc's 914 fired off last night. Zzzzzzzz, up a little late. Wound up with a small oil leak from the suction line at the tank and the crack on the muffler I didn't weld up is anoying. My mig is out of gas (Tank empty) and Duc is getting a triad anyway, so not going to fix that one. But, I'll figure out what's leaking on the oil line, hook up the last elect for gauges, puke tank and test drive hopefully tomorrow.

Duc - I might keep the 914 through the weekend to sort out little things and drive it to work Monday/Tuesday. You could pick it up from there maybe? I'll let you know.

Almost done! driving.gif

>Those SS BBoat headers look cool.<

Once you get your car back, would you mind posting your thoughts about how well the SS headers w/heater boxes heat up the cabin and keep the windshield from fogging up?

I've heard complaints in the past about the aftermarket heat exchangers not being able to even defrost a windshield.

I've been driving my /6 conversion year round without a heater since 1987. It sure would be nice to have a heater once in awhile kyle.gif . The $$$ for heat in a 914/6 are quite high. It would be nice to know if the $$$ get you what you expect.

Posted by: Root_Werks Oct 3 2008, 09:05 AM

Morgan, another local club member in my area has an original six with the B&B heater boxes. The air flow is good, but they never really get hot like the factory units do. The GHL units are about the same I have heard. Good air flow, but only so-so heat is produced. Around here in the PNW, they are a must have if you drive your car year round. They will keep you warm enough and keep your windows clear. On an icy morning, I don't think they would defrost anything though.

Most places seem to be around $2k a set for SS Heater boxes now. Duc got a very good deal on his. $2k is a lot to spend on heat, or warm air I guess. If your under 200hp, I'd try to find a set of good used factory units and have them cleaned and coated.

Morgan, you are harder core than me. Is your 914 a daily driver? Mine is, and I really rely on heat, especially when the weather turns like now. But even in summer, driving with top off on a cooler day/night, my heat is crankin'. 914 enjoyment greatly diminishes for me when I can't feel my toes. I know, I'm a pansy wink.gif

Re: these SS HEs... I'm sure my experience will be exactly as Dan has commented, not only because he's owned and built many 6s, but also because the HEs I now have were originally his (from the blue car that is now in TC's care). Like you, I'm hoping for decent heat, but I'm setting my expectations low, so I don't get too disappointed. I know that seems a strange stance given the cost of SS HEs...but it helps that these are (I think!) proper headers (with just heater boxes built around them), so there's a performance advantage. At least that's what I think/hope! Can't say for sure since I haven't had a chance to measure the pipe lengths, etc. I'm looking forward to having Dave @ Triad give me his opinion on them from a performance perspective.

Maybe others with 6s can chime in about their experiences...and advice for improving heating performance for us newbies???

Posted by: Root_Werks Oct 5 2008, 10:27 PM

There was an oil leak I think becuase the lower line from the tank had like 3 adapters on it. I couldn't get it to no leak so I welded up one of these.

Well, anoying that I couldn't figure out the alternator issue. Spoke to Dave @ Triad today, and Wednesday will be perfect, as I'll be able to pick up the exhaust on the way home.

So... that's it?

I just read through this entire thread. Looks awesome.

But what was the problem with the dash lights? Where are the pictures of the completed car out running around in the Pacific Northwest sunshine? What size are those new wheels Duc? Look like 16x7's to me. Is your transaxle a /4 unit and still have the standard gearing setup?

BTW... welcome.png

Posted by: Root_Werks Nov 1 2008, 12:49 PM

Yup that pretty much completed this project. Duc has the 914 back and is still fighting the alternator/charging issue. The dash lights I actually wound up running a litte bit of new wirring to cure that one. Under the dash of Duc's yellow 914 had been "worked" on before. It made tracing original wiring difficult. Plus we added a 911 combo gauge and seperate fuel gauge etc.

Hey Duc, I know your 914 is still at your Mechanics, any pictures for us now that it is back home?

Thanks, Gint. Yup, the wheels are 16x7. They were on the car before - I just had them powdercoated and re-polished. Yup, /4 gearbox w/ stock gears, for now. I want to switch to fuel injection asap, with better gearing on the list to follow.

Pictures of car running around now-RAINY PNW to come, as soon as I get the car back, hopefully this week.

Hey Dan. No pix, unfortunately. I've been just up to my neck with work - so much so, I haven't even missed the car all that much (and that's scary!). Have just left my mechanic alone to go through everything. All but one leak fixed, so I'm stoked!

There's an expert in town who specializes in tweaking the old-style voltage regulators who's going to look at the car this up-coming week. If all goes well, that will be it, and the car will finally come home. I can't wait. Though I'm a little nervous now that the wet weather is here.

Posted by: Root_Werks Nov 3 2008, 10:30 AM

Well, remember to be cautious with the alt issue. I mailed back the original VR to you. It certainly isn't a 3.2 alternator in there and when you mentioned it was running 18VDC that is usally a sign of a bad VR. There is no voltage regulation going on. When I did put my VR from my purple 914 on there, it did work for what, 2 days? That was a very old school mechanical relay, the good ones you cannot buy anymore either. Keep that one and see if your mech can repair or alter that one. There the ones you can actually work on. Like the old 356/VW 6volt regs. wink.gif
