914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Help install Crane XR700 ignition

Posted by: L8Apex Jan 7 2003, 10:32 PM

Trying/was going to install it today. Where do I align the optical thingy thing to? I'm also guessing the round pizza thingy slots have to line up to the slot alingment thing is for the rotor. Yes, I'm too lazy to get the directions out and use the terms to make this easier. The directions that come with the kit are kinda broad and don't say much. Probably made for someone who knows what they are doing. huh.gif sad.gif unsure.gif

Hey L8apex,

What's your name anyway. I got a nice avatar for ya.

Don't know anything about the Crane. I've never used one.

Mikey,

I can see why you would.

I had to do a minor edit. My intentions are honorable. Odd shaped pics drive me nuts.

my name is Terrance. Don't mind me, I'm just a stupid honda boy. unsure.gif

Do you have one of Bart pulling his pants down and mooning the group ?? That is the one I need...LOL

Relax Terrance. Ginter comes off cold and "assholish" in his posts. He is worse than me.. I always think he is pissed off when in reality.. he is not. He doesnt show much excitement in person either.

I should stop now.

I can't find that pic, but this current one is pretty good too. laugh.gif

L8Apex,
You are correct, from what I can remember on my install. I aligned the slot up to as closely mimick the points location. The instructions really aren't that great w/ the kit. I just made assumtions and ended up getting it right on the first try...go figure...first time I've gotten it right on anything electrical in my car biggrin.gif Good luck.

Ginter- I think I'm going to have to use that logo for my avitar...till I get a good pic of my car to use. (well looks like i found a better one, thanks anyway Terrance)

I was just trying to be hepful... didn't mean to offend. Sorry Terrance. I really prefer an email format, but a web board format adds the pictures. And I really like pictures.
Hey Brad... finger.gif But thanks for the insight. To be honest I struggle with humor in writing (web boards, email and such). I'm usually cautious until I really get to know someone anyway. It's especially difficult without actually meeting them in person. That's why I really enjoy my trips to Cal to hook up with you guys that I spend so much time with on these boards and email lists.

Nathan,
Don't thank me, that avatar came from Terrance.

L8Apex,
I can do it for you if you like, no charge, just pay for shipping. I have one in mine and it is a bit tricky to get the stuff to fit nicely without eating the shutter up. I could walk you through it, but it would take a long time.

I'm in Columbus Ohio. Let me know...

ok, now i have one of the crane 700 kits and i will attest that the instructions SUCK! anyway, any tricks or other bits of input that will help before i dive in? the way i see it is...

1) line up the rotor on the #1 plug on the cap.
2) gut the top of the dizzy without moving the shaft.
3) put in the new guts and try to line up the shutter.
4) put the cap back on
5) pray
6a) repeat above until car runs properly

or

6b) drink beer and swear

or

6c) 6 a and b

or

6d) con some other poor bastard into doing it.... pray.gif

let me know if i left out any steps....

thanks.....

That is EXACTLY how I should do tech articles...

Guy's... your making this more difficult than it needs to be.

Shoot some pics of the components and I will walk the group through it. I'm not sure which one you have... the Pertronix installs without lining anything up.

There is a small notch in the dizzy housing that is almost dead nuts for TDC1. Line it up with the notch... forget all the cap lining and twisting. Yank the dizzy and install it. DONT turn the engine over and reinstall the dizzy. I normally use a paint marker to mark where the dizzy was set to too begin with...so the car will at least run when I put everything back together. Then... put a timing light on it. The dizzy will only go in one way (rotor direction)

thanks brad,

now why didn't the instructions say that? about 5 sentences and it makes sense. that is until i find a way to f*&%k it up. then i start a new thread!

idiot yanks his dizzy ........

Posted by: Gint Jan 13 2003, 09:00 PM

4 cylinder dizzy only goes in one way. I used to yank mine out all the time without putting the motor on TDC.

Now the 6 is another story. I did manage to install it one rev out once. I didn't drink too much beer before I figured that one out. Wait, maybe it was the beer that got it in backwards to begin with...

Posted by: L8Apex Jan 13 2003, 10:04 PM

hehe. I have yet to install it. I tried, then gave up, and put all the other crap back in. Waiting for the engine to go back into the car before I install it again, then make sure it will run 1st, then install the Crane. Notice how hard it is to press that damn shutter! ARg devil.gif smash.gif

Posted by: Dave_Darling Jan 14 2003, 12:51 PM

It ain't that hard. As I recall, the shutter wheel goes on the driveshaft easiest one way--the cam lobes on the shaft fit the "notched" areas on the ID of the shutter. I just pushed until the thing bottomed out.

Drop me a line some time and I can drive my 90 Si (Y-49, bay-bee!) over and give you a hand installing the Crane. If it doesn't have an LED, then there's some monkeying around to do with the ignition on (move the pickup until you get a "ZAP" from the center coil wire taped near ground). The general idea is to get it close when the rotor is pointing at the pickup for the #1 cylinder. Then you tighten it all down and put it all together again, and set the timing for good.
