914World.com _ 914World Garage _ New wheels and tires on the /6

Posted by: Lavanaut Sep 17 2008, 04:41 PM

These tires are fairly new to the market and I waited a few months before buying them to see if some reviews might pop up. Indeed they did, and they were overwhelmingly positive. http://www.autofiends.com/index.php/2008/07/goodyear-eagle-gt-impressions/, http://www.speedsportlife.com/2008/08/25/speedsportlife-tire-test-goodyear-eagle-gt-champ-among-the-cheap/ (porsche content even!). Very affordable tire at $67 per at http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Goodyear&tireModel=Eagle+GT. This is an "ultra high performance all-season" tire, 195/60/15.

The wheels are Al Reeds, painted and polished.

Onto the porn! smile.gif

I know, I know. laugh.gif I've got all the parts, new aluminum trim pieces and everything. It's the prospect of drilling the holes for the lower trim piece that's got me icon8.gif. I think I'm dragging my feet a little on this one. Have I told you how the no-vinyl look is growing on me? biggrin.gif

Won't it look odd with a painted top & targa vinyl?

Posted by: Lavanaut Sep 18 2008, 10:57 AM

Heh, we'll see Mark! But the plan is to definitely restore the top to original as part of this effort. Actually I'm going to hang onto the red one since it's in such nice condition, but will be sourcing a nice stock-finish one as well.

Original /6? Shouldn't that one have the holes already? I'm guessing they were just filled in with bondo ...

Yep Andy, filled in. On the passenger side especially, I can make out where the holes were by running my finger along the base of the sail panel. In the right light, I can just make them out as well. I'm thinking I'll drill new holes instead of trying to exactly target the old holes ~ I'm worried that I'll mis-drill them and make them too big for the clips to fit properly.

Nice. Did you switch the wheels in order to have more tire choices? They don't look that different from the 14's. I'm curious as I hadn't considered different wheels yet..........you know-the originality thing.

Posted by: Lavanaut Sep 18 2008, 03:32 PM

I didn't switch so that I would have more tire choices, but because I just really like the deep 6s. But yes, these are 6 x 15s. I'm all about originality too, but am wiling to stray for things I prefer which are easily reversible. I do still have the stock wheels of course. smile.gif

6 x 15 doesn't provide many tire choices either, actually.

Was wondering when someone was going to mention that Craig. 1970 Factory /6, originally Irish Green and now listed on eBay. I got a nice close look at it, PM me if you want to know more. wink.gif

Very cool
Thanks for sharing and prefect timing too. I got my deep 6s painted and polished back from Al Reeds back in May but I didn't know what tires to buy. My car almost ready so its time to be getting some.
They look great on your car

Your car looks really nice. I like the matching roof. I think it makes the rims stand out even more ! The paint looks nice and glosssssaaaaa!!!!

Are those a "unidirectional" tire?

That's what I was wondering. I saw them on the Tire Rack site and didn't see if they were or not. They are obviously assymetrical though, with the large solid tread blocks to the outside.

You're right, what I was thinking was 195/60/15 doesn't provide many tire choices. Apparently hadn't had my morning coffee yet when I made the 6x15 comment.

So far so good, though I haven't really put enough miles on them to break them in yet. Probably won't happen until '09...or at least until I get my steering wheel back in. dry.gif biggrin.gif I really do like how they look though - aggressive w/o looking out of place on a classic car.

Posted by: Justinp71 Dec 5 2008, 05:31 PM

What color red is that? It almost looks like the later year Bahia red...

Posted by: Lavanaut Dec 5 2008, 05:35 PM

Yep, Bahia Red. Offered from the factory on the sixes starting in '71.

Posted by: Justinp71 Dec 5 2008, 05:39 PM

Oh thats the same color as my 75, which I plan to repaint soon. I am debating painting the roof and my rear spoiler...

Do you know what prep goes into painting the roof?

Posted by: 914rat Jun 24 2010, 04:53 PM

poke.gif Painted roofs look like crap.Don't do it.They look even worse when they peel. happy11.gif

Posted by: Kargeek Jun 25 2010, 10:44 AM

Your car looks awesome - painted top and sails...I say keep it however if you have issues with how the holes were filled....

For those purists who think that original is sacred... too bad.

I want that 3.0 CS coupe parked next to your car at the show....

Posted by: Root_Werks Jun 25 2010, 11:27 AM

It's a very nice looking 914!

15x6's look very nice.

Posted by: underthetire Jun 25 2010, 12:20 PM

How do they look today, 2 years later? Current pics may be in order here.
