914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Creamsicle resto thread- A little sad tonight

Posted by: JRust Oct 12 2008, 03:00 PM

Hey I came across a 914 for sale. I talked with the guy on the phone & he says it's a 73 2.0 car. It was in dry storage for a while but he couldn't find any rust. BOth trunks look good & he says below the battery there is NO Rust. I know I will believe that when I see it myself. Still I asked him to send me some pictures. I see bumper tits on the front bumper & know it's a 74. I also see Mahle wheels & an LE front spoiler idea.gif . Car runs & shifts great too! The side stripe isn't the right color for an LE though right?
How can I find out if it is an LE?
Vin#?
Then where would I find LE vins?

LE Mahles would have the centers painted. If it was an LE, the Porsche stripe would be orange.

Still might be a good deal.

I just wondered if they might have changed the wheels & the side stripes to something they liked better confused24.gif . Seen a few LE's that did not look like LE's at all with people changing them. Just wondering if there is a place to find out from the Vin or something?

Posted by: SLITS Oct 12 2008, 03:26 PM

Email Jeff Bowlsby with the VIN, Chassis Number, Paint Code ... he has the database with the range that LEs were built in.

If the Mahles are a rough finish (not slick) they probably have been media blasted to remove the paint. If the finish is slick silver, they are probably regualar Mahles.

You can also look in the trunk by the gas tank area, inside the doors, engine compartment, etc and see if there was a color change.

Posted by: watsonrx13 Oct 12 2008, 03:30 PM

A good indication of a LE, via Jeff Bowlby's web site:

Either L80E (Light Ivory) or L041 (Black) and manufactured between Feb and July 1974.

I agree with Kelty360 that the wheels and spoiler should be painted Orange (Creamsicle) and the strip should also be Orange, but you can't judge a book by it's cover....

Here's a LE (Creamsicle) I discovered after I purchased it as a donor car. After studying Jeff's web site I was convinced it was a LE, so I sent off for the COA and confirmed that indeed it was a Creamsicle ('Can Am' Limited Edition Package).... Here's what the car looks like today, before I start restoration....

And COA....

if it's a 73, i don't think it's an LE because LE's were MY 74. you can see from the COA in a post above that the LE's were MY 74

Our VIN page has the range for known LE's. IF the VIN falls within that range, you should get a COA ...

Am I wrong or didn't all LE's get sway bars ? confused24.gif One of mine fits the criteria ( vin number, no vinyl ) except for the sway bars

Posted by: JRust Oct 12 2008, 06:24 PM

It has some possibilities. I've got to see it in person to have a better idea. Yet there are some things I have noticed. The gages do have the black center, it's vin# does fall into the LE possibles, It has all the options, The valance is an LE (when I go see it I will see if it has the tell tale #'s on the backside), The paint code is the L80E & the chassis #also falls into the possible category. Having said all that I am not getting my hopes up.

Price wise if it actually runs great & has No rust as stated I will be buying it anyway. It will be a BIG plus if it ends up being an LE too! If so it is not a registered on on Jeff's site yet. Either way looks like I am getting sucked back in to multiple 914's rolleyes.gif

Posted by: sixnotfour Oct 12 2008, 06:29 PM

Its a Licorice LE , untracable, very rare. If it truly is that rust free score.

No! Just one of my many connections paying off av-943.gif
Actually that is true. Funny how some cars come up when people know you have one. I can't say I need the car but it should make someone happy eventually smile.gif

Posted by: JRust Oct 12 2008, 07:07 PM

Okay I just talked to him & am going up to see it tommorow. One other thing he says is I noiced when I was getting the vin# on the door that the rocker has some orange paint underneath it. So t looks like they painted the rockers at one time.

I think to myself No Freakin way! The Mahles also have kind of a rough finish or at least are not a real smooth silver biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif I'd be lying if I didn't say I am getting excited now piratenanner.gif Can u say Creamsicle?

Posted by: Rav914 Oct 12 2008, 07:15 PM

Rear targa bar trim is black also. The evidence looks like it's coming together for a Creamsicle!

Keep us posted.

I have sort of! You are going to laugh too. This is that flighty guy Chris from awhile back. You will remember him as he talked to you about buying an engine for his car. I ended up selling him the 2.0 I bought from Tim up in Portland. It was the one that was in the silver 74 I bought from you. Then I sold him a 71 roller,74 roller & one other one I forget the info on. He was into computers or something for work. I'm pretty positive I sold him 3 of those 4 914's. av-943.gif He was one strange guy but likeable. He was planning on restoring some & racing some. Guess those plans have changed. I wouldn't waste my time checking them out if I was you.

Man Jamie,
When did you have time to squeeze this into your weekend? What with the drive on Saturday and all. You must have a VERY PATIENT WIFE!!! biggrin.gif
Good to see you on Saturday.
Man all I can remember is seeing your smiling face in my rear view mirror coming down into Cougar and climbing up into Amboy. I was mpressed with your cars power and I was up in front. Your car also semed to be handling the twities very well. I couldn't see any body roll. Do you have sway bars on that car?

Posted by: JRust Oct 13 2008, 11:17 PM

Okay so YES IT IS A CREAMSICLE piratenanner.gif I have the original window sticker from the dealership! Here are some pictures & I am excited that it really is an 74 LE creamsicle biggrin.gif It runs but could use some fine tuning. Overall pretty solid. The front trunk is great with no rust. The rear trunk has some starting below the tailights but not replace the panel bad. The battery tray is another story. So much for no rust by the battery or below (lying stinking poser chair.gif ).

Now to the downside. There is rust headbang.gif
It has a branded title headbang.gif headbang.gif Which really sucks as the only body damage I can find is the front drivers side fender. It was obviously swiped by something. Didn't screw anything else up just that fender. Really pisses me off that it has a branded title because of that. It needs a new fender but would be just fine once replaced.

Congrats Jamie...it's always fun hearing about barn finds that turn out to be gems. It always amazes me when an owner says "no rust." I bet he is from back east...sorry no offense guys, but it's all relative.

With my little understanding of the value of this car in the condition it is in, I would say flip it for top dollar. A proper restoration will cost you $ unless you do it yourself. And do it correctly!!!

I bet you get some great trade deals that will make you smile...way to go, Jamie! smilie_pokal.gif

From the few Pics it looks like its pretty stock.
What about the eng. is it #s matching?

Posted by: JRust Oct 14 2008, 09:06 AM

I don't know on the engine until I get a COA. In looking at the car I would be surprised if this engine has been changed. Doesn't look like it's even been out o the car? If it has it was a long time ago. SO I am very optimistic that this s all numbers matching. NOt sure if the LE front valance is a stock or a replacement. It does have a crack in it either way. I'll pull it off tonight to see. Feeling good about it today. I think a restore is in my future. Maybe not a ful blown but I think I will get it back to looking like an LE before I do anything with it? It's all up in the air though

Posted by: Bleyseng Oct 14 2008, 09:17 AM

Nice score, Jamie. Look on jeff Bowlsbys site for the details on the LE spoiler as they are different from the aftermarket ones. Fiberglass is easy to repair! chair.gif

Posted by: Michael N Oct 14 2008, 10:39 AM

Sweeeet find!!! smilie_pokal.gif If the valance is original repair it. The OEM one have a different angle on the sides. If it just cracked it should be a easy repair.

Posted by: JRust Oct 14 2008, 12:17 PM

How do I go about getting a COA from Porsche?
I also need to replace the front fender. What is the best way to do it? I've got a car I can cut one off of. Where do I want to cut to have what I need for the new one? I will be having someone else put the new fender on. I do not have the welding ability to do it at this point. I also want it done right.

Going to start to strip it down this weekend. Pull all the bumpers, Valances & Rockers. I'll get them media blasted (if that is the best way to go). Depending on how soon I am going to do bodywork I may pull the wheels to prep for Phoenix Red along with the other pieces. Once the rockers are off I'll have a better idea of the rust damage there. Jack posts seemed solid but the passenger side I could tell had build up(road crap) around it.

Top dash will need recovered or replaced with a good one. The seats need redone along with center cushion. Door panels are uncut & perfect biggrin.gif . Rest of the dash is excellent. All gages are working & look great. All knobs on the dash are pristine along with the working stock Blaupunk radio biggrin.gif . The carpet is a redish color & I'm asuming was replaced from stock confused24.gif . Gas pedal wobbles with your foot pushing on it?
Front bumper top is wavy while the rear has the issues by the liscence late lights. Thats what I can think of now anyway unsure.gif . I am thinking resto now & I must be losing it screwy.gif

I also just called Porsche & ordered my Certificate of Authenticity. Of course I won't get it for 4-6 weeks but oh well. I also was able to get the title transfered to my name this morning along with new tags. Guess I'll have to take it for a spin tonight driving.gif

Posted by: jmill Oct 14 2008, 02:29 PM

If you check out my "Green machine" progress thread you see me change the passenger front fender next week. There's a thread around here that shows Chris at CFR butt weld new fenders on. I'll have to drill the whole thing off due to damage. It's just a matter of drilling out one heck of alot of spot welds and then welding it back on. When you open the hood you can see the seam. Then look behind the front tire, there's some more there. The hard part is around the cowl and window pillar.

How do you tell if a '74 is an LE? I have a parts car that is a '74 2.0 with center console, lettering on the side, no vinyl on the sail panels, factory sway bars, etc. It is lime green...The PO rear-ended a car, but besides some front end damage it is really straight...and it really, truly has absolutely no rust.

I'll feel guilty if I've been swiping parts off rare car to keep my '75 on the road...

Couple easy things to check. Does it have sway bars? If you can feel under the rear quarter where the lower vinyl piece would go can you feel holes. If it is an LE there are no holes. So if you can feel where they filled the holes that is an indication. Also the LE has 2 extra metal pieces up front that attatch to the front LE valance. These sit close to the front of the suspension behind the front bumper. Check out Jeff's link http://members.rennlist.com/914_canam/

I have literally never used a body hammer & Anvil. I'd hate to use this car as my practice blink.gif . It is so tight up in there too I can't imagine it would be easy. dry.gif

Posted by: jd74914 Oct 16 2008, 07:14 AM

Its really not that hard. The same fender on our newest car looked like that and it straightened pretty well with some ball peen hammers. It is pretty close now. The question is where to go if you get really close, shrinking disk and really nice or a little bit of filler?

There isn't any harm in trying it; Its only metal. Worst case you can replace the fender or have professional try after you if you can't get it done to your satisfaction. smile.gif

Map gas it just until it starts to form small bubbles then pop it off with a screwdriver. the heat will relase it and if it cools it won't reattatch but it won't break free from the surrounding bondo as easily as it will when still hot. Oh and do'nt catch it when it falls

Posted by: computers4kids Oct 16 2008, 11:14 PM

Jamie...remember this fender, you should...you helped me load this pile of parts. Using body hammers and anvil ($20 kit from harbor freight) I was able to completely reform the fender with practically no plastic filler. Yours doesn't look that bad at all from the pics.Attached Image After Attached Image

Seriously I will give the body work a try. I guess if I screw it up I can always replace the whole dang piece which I considered anyway. So I will see what I can do. I guess I'll have to start an official Creamsicle Restoration thread wacko.gif

Methylacetylene propadiene burns higher temp then propane, but for this use propane would be perfectly fine, the extra heat from Mapp isn't necessary. Lowes, HomeDepot etc sell them in small cans I would strongly recommend one of the torch heads with an ignitor button on it too.

Okay I went to home depot & got the Mapps just like in the photo above. It works great for loosening everything up. Got it bubbling then used a screwdriver to scrap the filler off. IT was very thick in places. I would say 3/8 of an inch in spot WTF.gif . I also went to harbor freight yesterday for the body hammer & tools. I forgot to take pics before I went to work on it. IT went pretty well & I can see I should be able to get things pretty close. I will definately need finish work by a pro but mostly because of the weld mixed in. I'm not sure how but it looks like it cracked in a long line? Was cut? Anyway there is some weld from just above the tire forward. Then there is a break with some brass weld(?) just above the front turn signal.

Anyone have a trick for getting the top of the fender hammered up some. I can't seem to get up there with the hammer or the small anvils. Also the area below the turn signal is bent down a bit. I don't see how to get up there without some long extension to hammer.

I also took it for a 50 mile ride this morning. Drives pretty good but could use a tuneup. Clutch felt good as did the shift linkage. Going to treat the rust in the rear trunk tonight dry.gif

That kinda sucks. It has quite obviously had a clip spliced in ( poorly ) previously. As for pushing the area above the t.s. up if you have access to a welder it would be easiest to cut a slice in it, following the brass that has been globbed in there, then push the 2 sides up seperately and re-weld it. The brass will need to be completely removed to mig weld it back together. If you can or know someone that can oxy acetylene brass it could be re-welded with brass.

If you don't want to cut and re-weld you will just need to find some way to get in there und knock it into shape.

Posted by: JRust Oct 19 2008, 12:01 AM

I don't think it had a spliced section. I really think something cause the cut where they welded. Not sure how but even the weld does not go from the bottom you see all the way to the fron where the brass is. There is a couple inches with no weld between the bottom weld & where the top brass is. I've got a good body guy in mind. He helped me with the restoration of my 73 8 years ago. Not sure if he is still around. I've got to see monday if he is where he was then. I will get this fixed & soon.

Posted by: computers4kids Oct 19 2008, 01:35 AM

I knew you could do it! smash.gif Great step in the right direction. Some body guys use a "slidehammer" to pull out places where you can't get behind. You can make one real cheap. Since you will be having a body guy do the finish work anyway, he will have a slide hammer. When he is done all you will have at most is just a very thin coat of plastic filler...like an 1/8th of an inch.
Lookin good!

Ah I couldn't tell there were spots with no weld. In that case it was probably hit and to pull it out it was just cut, pulled back closely by hand then re-welded. The brass may have been used to fill in some deep depressions or possibly to fill in where there was a gap. Back to the issue at hand. If you can get hold of a welder, get the panel as close as possible then you could cut out some of the nastier sections and make some patches to clean it up if you so desire. welder.gif

Okay so I got the fender cutout & replaced thanks to the seattle Work party. Jeff Hines is the man. Between him & Dan Root they got the fender on & very nice. We decided it would be better to replace the area rather than fix it as it was just to hammered. Although we were able to keep all the factory welds in place. It turned out great! I'll need a small amount of filler but just a very small amount. Here are some pics (thanks to John Bovey as I forgot my dang camera).

As you can see in the pics the only thing I did was cut. I am the WRONG guy to give advice on hammer & dolly. Although I did pound on the fender before replacing the section. Just to much crappy weld there to start with & damage. I can see how using the hammer & dolly in most situations you can get it close enough. Then a little filler to smooth things out. I am sure some of the pro's will chime in with good advice smile.gif

Is Visalia, CA close ? Jamie, the fender doesn't look that bad...it's amazing what you can straighten with a body hammer and body anvil.

Yes but , in your case some else hadn't worked the heck out of yet, only initial damage. good job.

Jamies fender had been heated , hammered ,ground, welded ,brazed, I tried to pound it around , but the metal was already worked to much and it was splitting and tearing holes (thin from grinding).A Lot of the feature in the front section was hammered flat already. With the time we had , this was going to provide the best results and still has the factory attachment points.

I haven't done anything to my car lately. I have been getting some parts together. I finally just found an uncracked dash. I just got my new carpet. Thanks to Morph (James & Heidi) along with a new center cushion. I also found a nice set of seats. I also got a new speedometer with everything working biggrin.gif . Basically I have everything I need to have a concours stock interior aktion035.gif .

Now I get to get back to the body. I'll be pulling the drivetrain over thanksgiving weekend. I need to replace my battery tray. Below is good thank goodness. The motor is pretty solid but leaking. Pretty sure the typical pushrod seals. I'll be prepping the tin for paint. This I will do myself. The rest of the paint is going somewhere to get done. Not sure where yet? Looking for someone local who will give me a nice paint job cheap rolleyes.gif . Well hoping to find someone reasonable anyway.

Oh I also need to repair the rear trunk hinge. Anyway making some progress while not actually doing alot to my car confused24.gif

One more thing. Has anyone had the negative porsche side decal painted on instead. Would it increase the value as opposed to the common vinyl? Or was this vinyl stock? SO which woul be better? It seems to me the pheonix red would match better if painted with the wheels? Just curious idea.gif

Talk to mahoney in kelso about the paint. i got his contact info i just did a interior for him.

Got it! Kind of figured that but thought it would match better. Doesn't seem like the decal matches the phoenix red that well. Maybe the decal was just faded

Well I haven't found the original engine. I did find one damn close though. My original case was GA012249. I found one that is GA012267. Not sure if that would be better than the GA out of the 73 that is currently in the car confused24.gif . Unless it is the original numbers matching one I can't imagine it making a difference. Do you think the year specific would make it more desirable?

Either way I am going to buy the motor. Always nice to have a backup smile.gif .

Porsche has a 1-800 #. I don't remember where I got it. You just need your vin & they will send it out. Takes 4-6 weeks for it to all go thru. Cost like $75 too but well worth it.

I got a big package today in the mail. It is my perfect new dash drooley.gif . I packaged the sucker back up until I could get to it. Still haven't done squat to my car. Right now it is to damn cold in my basement. 30 degrees outside right now headbang.gif

I think I am going to read up on body work. Any good books out for that? I'd like to do the prep work before paint. I'd also like to take shot at painting the pheonix red on the bumpers, Rockers, Valances & wheels.

Posted by: Coy Dec 18 2008, 11:00 PM

Hey, I painted the fairing on my BMW this fall. It took me 4 tries and I'm still not happy with it, but I got sick of trying and it's pretty close now.

Anywhooo... I can tell you a couple things not to do, when preping to paint.
For one thing double check the type of sandable primer you use. Don't use lacquer primer with acrylic paint. headbang.gif I actually knew that, I just didn't think they sold lacquer primer at Napa, and apparently I'm too stupid to look. sad.gif Every day of my life, I live & learn...

Oh well, nothing sandpaper can't fix...

I have a touch up gun that works pretty good for small areas.

Hey Jamie you should talk to Steve Hebert about painting your car. He was the guy driving the vette at the Falling Leaf Tour drive. Steve has painted several 914's. He did the battery tray reapir on my car and also painted a bug for me. He has done alot of work for Craig and is reasonable on his prices. His shop is in Washougal. Talk to Craig. He's got his number.

Posted by: JRust Jan 25 2009, 04:25 PM

Okay so after a while of not doing anything I've started taking parts off. Sending to a shop for paint a week from Wednesday. Pulled off bumpers & valances yesterday along with the rockers. Next saturday out comes the drivetrain. Then it is off to get painted. Will be a good 6 weeks at the shop for paint.

Found a local retired guy who does it in his spare time. He works about 2 days a week is all. So he will go slow but at least I can do a pay as you go with him. Nice and reasonable to work with & does great work. He did a lot of Mopar restorations & I got to look at his photo album. Got to see a very nice 69 firebird resto from start to finish.

While it is at the shop I will be pulling engine tin for powdercoating. Still debating keeping the good running 2.0 motor. Someone had replaced the original motor with one out of a 73. I found a 2.0 motor out of a 74 that is only 19 numbers off my original motor. Not sure if it will make much difference value wise as neither is the original. It would at least be year specific confused24.gif .

Finished pulling the drivetrain today. Only a week late dry.gif . I also took off the rear bumper & drivers rocker. Wish I had a set of rollers to send the car out on. As the wheels need to come off for paint also. I may pick some up this wednesday when I go to pick up my new 73 2.0 biggrin.gif . Here are some pics of the soon to be phoenix red parts. Also nice to see all of these parts show the original Pheonix red underneath the black paint.

Also some pics of the phucking rust on the battery tray & below headbang.gif . It actually isn't that bad. No holes going thru & solid even with the screwdriver test. I allready have a replacement battery tray (Thanks Dan Root). I've got to get all my paint codes for my paint guy too.

Posted by: JRust Jul 15 2009, 04:25 PM

Well there were some serious delays. My paint guy got real sick. Ended up in the ICU for close to 2 weeks. My car pretty much sat for 2 months without anything being done. Not a huge deal as I was resigned for a longer wait than usual. Good news is I am going to see it on saturday. I've got to take over some rollers so I can get the tires off the Mahles before paint. I also forgot to take over my new battery tray & the front Valance. I'll be dropping those pieces off & taking some pictures. Finally starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel biggrin.gif Although I still have to put it all back together dry.gif .

Motor is being rebuilt & will be ready. Transmision is being rebuilt at Evil's clinic. I've got ton's of beautiful parts ready to go back on this baby. It may not be a concours winner when I am done but it sure as hell should place popcorn[1].gif .

Went to see the LE today in the shop. Here are some pictures. Only 2 weeks away from paint biggrin.gif . I picked up the Mahles today & put riv's on there for rollers. Jamie, your car looks great...I bet you're getting excited to get it back.

I'm sure your paint guy is going to....
but, be sure he pulls the headlight lids, eyebrows, and the carpet on the wall in the the front trunk to get a better paint job. It looks like he might not be planning on it. I've always pulled the headlight assemblies as well to better detail those units and below, but that's just me.

Looks great! beerchug.gif

Overall it looks very good. A few issues that pissed me off. The biggest being the rear trunk. Has some rust below the headlights. While he did treat it & paint it. That was all he did. He didn't fill & sand the depression from it. So it is obvious where the rust was. Also my new battery tray he put in & did an okay job on. He burnt though in one section & didn't fill the small hole left. Hardly noticable but why not fill it confused24.gif . Overall I not 100% happy (more like 90%). Then again I did not pay for a perfect job either. I doubt I will use him in the future knowing how things came out. I did learn I need to be completely specific about everything & put it all in writing. That way there is no misunderstanding after. All in all the rest of the car look very nice. A perfect concours car it is not. Still I think when I am done it would do well.

He still has to paint the silver lips on the mahles. They look great though. So it is on my roller Riviera's for another week. I'm hoping to throw it together enough for the falling leaf tour. I may have a little work party next weekend to do the motor install. I'll keep posting pics as I install each piece.

I am so happy to have it home after so long being away. piratenanner.gif

Hey Jeff,
Whats the trick to putting on the side stripe? How high does it sit about the bottom? I've done a few vinyl letters before but never on a car. Before I ran tape accross the top getting it n the right place. Then cut in a few sections. Then fold it up & pull the backing off. Only a piece at a time. Not sure with the sidestripe where the breaks are. Then adhering each piece getting all the air out from top to bottom. That sound right or even make sense confused24.gif

Not trying to bust your balls Jamie, but you answerd the question to your own dissatisfaction.

a: You didn't want, nor expect a perfect job.
b:You didn't pay for a perfect job
c: you weren't specific as to what you did expect.

Quite honestly the only thing I see that you have a right to be pissed about is the burn through hole on the battery tray.

Being on the other end of this situation I know VERY WELL how these things go. I do my best to be completely upfront as to what a customer will get and wil not get for a specified amount of money. Most of the cars I have posted pics of are in the $15-$20,000 range. I consider them to be better than original bare metal restorations, but NOT "perfect". The " PERFECT " jobs I do are STRICTLY time and materials. For example I reworked a 356 carerra speedster hood last year for a local customer. NOT stripped bare and completely redone just fixed some flaws from the previous " restorer " and repainted and finished it out. He had almost 1000.00 just in the hood. Time and materials. He also told me the hood make the rest of the car look awful. It's a piece of black glass smile.gif

I have said before and I will say again, in this line of work you get what you pay for. YES there are a lot of shady body men out there, but there are also a lot of shady lawyers, preists, and god knows, shady politicians. For some reason though the mechanics and body men are the scourge of society from the start. confused24.gif

I realize I answered my question. I guess pissed was a little strong. Disapointed is probably better. We did talk about the rear trunk & the bit of rust there. So I guess in talking with him I made an assumption that it would at least blend. I expected more than what was done. In him saying he could take care of it no problem. I took that to mean it would look good when done. I should know better than to make assumptions though. I did get what I paid for & overall it is looks good. I did not expect perfection. This area is covered anyway so it is not a huge catastrophy.

I did manage to spend a few minutes on it today. Here is what I got put on.

SO I got some work done today. I took out my old dash & got my new dash in. I did find cracks in my supposed uncracked dash. They really are small & can't be seen. Especially once in my car. I was happy to see that. I also spent more time on my interior. I've got about half my carpet in. I will be finishing my interior tommorow. Oh & I need to put my rear window back in.

I added a picture of the LE with it's new side stripe (thanks Jeff Bowlsby biggrin.gif ). Overall they went on pretty well. I did get a few air bubbles but got them ou for the most part. I can't wait to pick up my Mahles this week. Then it will really pop.

My engine is pretty close to ready. My wrench is wrapping it up this weekend. I should have it back on monday & can put my nice powdercoated tin on it drooley.gif . There are a few pics of my motor. Yeah game was awesome! My son & I had a great time. Would have like to have gotten more done on my car yesterday. Such is life though. There are always things that come up with the Family that slow my progress. Which is just fine as they come first.

I should have a few hours to get my rear window installed today & finish my interior. I'll take & post more pics later biggrin.gif

Only got to a little today. I finished the carpet install. I put the soundpad that goes behind the backpad in.I needed to clamp it near the top to make sure it set good. So instaling the rear window will wait until tommorow after work. There is a picture of my new dash too. It does look nice as the cracks don't show. You need to be real closeup & looking for them to see them.
I needed to order a few seals from Mark for the doors.

Well luckily the Falling Leaf Tour is being rescheduled. 2 great things happen because of this. First I get to work on my car all day saturday. Second is I think I can actually have it ready by next week to go on the drive biggrin.gif .

Friday night I am going up to get my motor. We will be pulling my heads as we got the 2 mixed up. CHT is on the drivers side instead of the passenger side dry.gif . I was going to leave it but after asking in another thread. I thought on it more & it makes sense to just get it done now. Then I'll never have to pull the motor again.
Literally as I plan to sell this once I have it all dialed in. Well I may hold on until spring & the market overall is better. I'll be taking up all my nice powder coated tin (Thanks Conedodger biggrin.gif ). I'll try to get some motor porn up tommorow night

VERY nicely done! You're going to have a tough time letting her go. Can't wait to see the motor porn, specially the exhaust.

Put some of my lights on & my rear bumper. Still need a nice set of tits for the rear. The one set I got turned out to be fronts. I need to throw some nice satin blackon my emblems, wipers & foglight grills. Didn't get to do squat over the weekend. I woke up with serious neck pain. Just super stiff & couldn't hardly lift my left arm. Got in to see a local chiropractor. Saturday was still pure hell for me. Sunday was better but was still really sore. I'm feeling much better today. SO I spent a little while on my car. Wish I could have worked on it saturday. Spent most the day on my rear watching football. Constantly moving my neck so it wouldn't stiffen up headbang.gif

I need to start working on it again. Thanks for the reminder Drew dry.gif . I still don't have my motor but I have plenty I can do. I'll try to spend a few hours on it saturday biggrin.gif

Yeah I know Rob! Strange huh blink.gif . I'll be spit shining it later.

Hey Billy yes I'll be puting everything on it while it's out. When I go to install it I will be starting it & breaking it in that day. I'm just excited to work on it again. I haven't felt inspired in at least a month. Now I'm chomping at the bit. Just picked it up this morning. I'll be unloading it when my load of family get's here in an hour. Doubt I'll get to do much with it until saturday. Have a house full today. I may try to sneak out some later tonight piratenanner.gif

By the way Happy Turkey day Guys!!!

Allright I finally did something. I put my rear bumper tits on (thanks Conedodger). I painted a few things black to freshen them up. Rear emblems, engine bar, Foglight grills, liscense plate frames & my windshield wiper arms. I also added my new rear trunk seals (thanks Camp914)>

I also started getting my carbs put on my motor. I am missing a couple gaskets though. Is the gasket that goes between the carbs & the Manifolds one piece or 2?

Jamie,
The car is looking great--love the rear picture shot you just posted. Is that bumper top one of Mikey's? Eventually, I'll have to break down and buy both of his front and rear bumper tops.

Keep the momentum going... piratenanner.gif

Posted by: JRust Nov 28 2009, 09:34 AM

Nope the rear isn't one of Marks. Found a damn near perfect one at Conedodgers Sac swap I went to last spring. I do have his front bumper top on it though. I also have some of his seals to put on. I should make decent progress today. I actually have most the saturday open. So I plan to spend alot of it in the garage biggrin.gif . Probably get my tranny all mated up. I'd like to get the ss HE & exhaust all on too.

Is it easier to put those on once the motor & tranny are bolted in the car? I think I usually put them on after but it's been a few years. Be nice to have it all bolted together.

Probably just personal preference. I like to put everything on the motor, trans, exhaust, everything and lift it up as a whole unit. I hate working under the car--but that's just me. You might wait on putting the carbs on though, unless your OK with lifting the car that much higher.

Posted by: JRust Nov 28 2009, 10:19 PM

I got a few things done today but not as much as I'd hoped. I needed a stud puller so I decided a trip to Harbor freight was in order. Of course it is abut 40 minutes from my house. Once there of course they didn't carry a stud puller. So I bought the ATV jack alot of guys on here use for their motor installs.

Then stopped at the local VW parts place & picked up a few gaskets I was missing for my carbs. Also stopped at Knechts for some blue locktite. Ended up being a good 2 1/2 hour trip. Oh & the local tool shop for a stud puller.

Once I got back home I put together my new jack. Transfered my engine onto it. Installed my newly painted engine bar. Added the studs I was missing on the case below the flywheel for the tranny. I wet sanded some of the parts I painted & added another coat. Got my tranny out & started cleaning it up. I know I pressure washed it before Dr. Evil's tranny clinic? I didn't realize how much crap was still on there. So I'll be spendingsome time cleaning that up some more. Just wouldn't do to mate it to my nice fresh motor. Got clutch, PP & flywheel all ready to bolt up.
Hey what is the torque for the flywheel bolts?

Then I'll bolt my tranny up. Install my SS HE & exhaust. Hope to do some of it tommorow afternoon biggrin.gif I didn't get as much done as I wanted today. Still it was a really nice to have the day dedicated to my 914.

I am putting carbs on only to break in my motor. MY FI setup I haven't actually used. Don't know the condition of anything of it. So I will get it running with the carbs I got from you Rich. Then I will be putting my FI on it later. I have pretty much everything for my FI. Just didn't want to troubleshoot the FI when doing the break in of my motor.

Posted by: JRust Nov 29 2009, 08:46 PM

Put on a few more pieces today. Foglight grills, emblems, Flywheel, Clutch & Pressure plate. I started to mate up the tranny but got interupted. So that will wait for another day. I'm hoping to get one night this week to work on it some more.

I finally got some work done today.

Installed my new targa seal! That is one slow PITA of a job. Turned out nice though.

Installed me windshield trim. It was used trim & I can't say I really like how it turned out. It looks okay from a distance but up close it's not that good. Guy I had install the windshield did me no favors. Still it's on & isn't going to get much better without new trim & possible reinstalling the windshield. With all new clips headbang.gif

I worked on my interior some more. Got my dash gages reinstalled along with the lower dash. Was prepping to put the plates on the door jams but couldn't find my gamn rivet gun. I could swear I bought one just for the job too. Oh well I am sure it will turn up once I go buy another one dry.gif

was going to install my rear wndow again but turns out the 2 I have are scratched. I am going to have Morph hopefully bring me one tommorow. Otherwise I am going to put a scratched one in. One is right behind the passenger seat anyway so it won't really be noticable anyway.

It was really nice to have my saturday to work on my car. It's been quite a while biggrin.gif

I also managed to put 2 scratches in my freshly painted gage console headbang.gif I'll get it all touched up fine. Along with touching up the screws so they are black again. Looking good Jamie! You got little less than two months to get her done son! I gotta get my ass going also. Just ordered a bunch of stuff from Morph for my interior.

Posted by: JRust Mar 20 2010, 09:09 PM

I got quite a bit done today. Put my rear window back in (did it a while ago & pulled it as I just didn't get it quite right). Put all trim pieces back on.
Installed the center console, backpad & seats
Center cushion (thanks Morph) .
Installed inner door seals (thanks Mikey914) Have the outer door seals to do
Installed door threshold plates (Thanks Dave)

Its been so long I couldn't find some parts. Luckily I have my 73 here to swipe pieces/hardware from.

I've got my door panels all ready to go but need to get endcaps & the triangle window seal from Mikey914. So those will go on along with the door panels.

I will have a delay installing my engine. Just not happy with the battery tray install or the area around it. I'm going to pull it off & redo it. I'm also going to replace the seal channel below the batter tray. It had some rust & has some little chunks missing. I'm going to get that all cleaned up as it just pisses me off sad.gif That area should have been taken care of by my paint guy. At least it will be done right.

Overall it was a kick ass day. It was beautiful & sunny. I spent the day in & out of the garage between 914's biggrin.gif

The clutch pedal is onthe floor as it isn't hooked up. Yes no seat belts yet poke.gif . I did say the interior was almost finished rolleyes.gif . I also need to buy some speakers to fit the stock speaker grills.

I also put the new letters & rain tray on the engine lid. The letters don't show that great in the pic but it's looks great.

I spent most my day saturday & a few hours today on the creamsicle. Man it was a gorgeous weekend. I got more of the interior finished. Finished the drivers door. My drivers exterior door handle was broken. I pulled apart 3 different door handles to make one. Was able to piece one together for it & rekey it to match. I spent a fair amount of time screwing with those before I got it right. Got a set of speakers out of my 73 that were still good so my stock radio is all set.

I'm not sure what these wires go to? Check the pics below. This isn't long enough to make it to the center console defrost stuff?

I also added the liscense place light to the rear. Put the aluminum channel on the door frame where the window meets when close. I need a couple seals for those. Calling Mikey914 smile.gif .

I spent time getting the FI off my 73 along with a few other pieces. I'v got to start getting my FI together for this motor. Next on my list is to replace the channel in the engine bay for the seal. Just about to the point of just having to install the drivetrain blink.gif

Okay I've got some more done. I wasn't hapy with how the battery tray area was done. Just wasn't treated before it was shot. There was some rust in spots. Mostly where the battery tray met the wall. I sanded, cleaned up, treated, primed & reshot the area. Looks much better now. It being mothers day I doubt I will get much time in the garage today. If I can sneak down for a bit. I am going to install the engine bay seals.

I've got my motor almost set to go in. My distibutor was off a good 1/4 turn which is where my buddy set the timing. I've got to fix that & am reading up on how. Any tips appreciated. I keep thinking of my dang toyota years ago when I got my distributor off by a tooth or 2. Little different setup here & I haven't got my brain wrapped around it yet. I know it's easy enough. Posted by: JRust May 10 2010, 11:43 PM

Well the motor didn't make it in today. Spent a little more time painting & sanding the battery tray area. Still not quite as nice as I want it but it will do. I've got the motor mostly ready. I have all the fuel hoses in place. I need to get all the vacum lines in place. I can do that in the car too. Then figure out where all the wiring goes again. Sure wish I had someone with a 73-74 2.0 FI car close by that could come over for a while. Always nice to have a car to compare wiring & misc things too. It was a productive day for the most part. Had a couple parts runs mixed between everything. Pushing my time envelope but such is life.

Oh yeah I had Fed Ex drop by my nice used Banana muffler. I have that on too smile.gif (thanks for getting that to me so quick Rich)

I didn't try to fire it up. Was getting kind of late & worked on the many other little things involved. One of which is reinstalling my axles/cv's. It was so nice not having those in the way when I did the drivetrain install. Usually I work around them. Is there a trick to getting the cv's to mate up the stub axle in the trailing arm. I fought with one for a good 20 minutes before calling it a night dry.gif . Maybe I'm just tired. Any tricks you use would be great. I'll get back to it in the morning.

Besides the axles I need to hook up the starter. I need to track down my ground line. How many wires run to the starter again? I need to go to bed. Nothing is making sense headbang.gif . Back to it tommorow biggrin.gif

Posted by: JRust May 12 2010, 11:54 AM

Got my axles on fine. Guess I was just tired last night. I've got it back on the ground now. Just need to do a few hoses & the FI computer. I hope I can track down a diagram of them. I've got a few electrical things I am not sure on yet. Oh yeah & put the relay board in. Then it's break in time. I also need to figure out what I am going to do for a trailer. I bought one but it is not ready for the trip. I may rent a dolly or a trailer. Just goes against the grain wasting on renting. I'll check Craigslist for a trailer today.

Okay where does the single wire coming up from the alternator plug in?

Also on the relay board what plugs in on the big open spot towards the trunk? Am I missing a wiring loom. I also don't seem to have th 2 prong plug that plugs right next to the main wiring harness at the top of the board? Here are pics

That single wire in your hand? I dunno...whats it connected to? It looks out of place on that side of the engine. Could it be the oil temp sender wire?
The 12 pin connection on the relay boards is for your...ignition harness - you know - to the coil, starter, back-up light switch.
The 2 poles at the front of the relay board - rear window defroster harness connection...fogeddaboudit.

The single wire is connected to the Alternator.

The 12 pin close to the engine bay that is plugged in controls that?

Or the open 12 pin I have closer to the rear trunk?

Yeah I was missing one wire llom there dry.gif . I found it & should be good. Had to drop things & go to my girls track meet. Hope to be back at it in an hour or so. Talk about pushing the envelope. Well keep your fingers crossed. Official fire up should be around 8 tonight

Posted by: Tom May 12 2010, 06:21 PM

Jamie,
The 12 pin is for the engine electrics. The forward plug is 14 pin and goes into the harness. Alternator wires should be 3 wires with a plug that plugs in next to the voltage regulator. Looking at your pic, your alt plug is plugged in already. I think there is one (hot) large wire that goes to the batt positive at the solenoid. That is the wire that charges the battery. Should have a round type connector, but someone may have changed yours.

Doubt it. Oil temp is green/black and should be under the engine ...

shades.gif Andy

Okay I think maybe this one should be under the car. It was ran through there & there is a hole for it or so it seems. The wire is Brown with a black strip & has an outer casing that hides that color? I thought it was from the alternator but I don't think it is. With the tin on I can't see what it is connected too confused24.gif

I have the 12 pin squared away for the most part. Which wires go where on the coil though. There are a total of 4 wires one being the white wire with a male end encased in the like 2" hard plastic. Then the 3 for the coil (Green w/ red stripe) , small black wire & slightly bigger second black wire. Thanks for all the help guys. I am so close to being able to fire it up. Just a few minor wiring things sad.gif

Jamie,
Do you have a large wire hooked up from the alt. to the batt. term on the solenoid? If not, your alt. will not charge the batt.
The wire in your top pic is not supposed to be there. That is the hole for the thermo wire ( multistrand steel, not electric) that hooks up to the flappers.

Yes I have the large wire to the solenoid on the starter right? Any idea what that wire that isn't supposed to be there goes?

Jamie, just checked out my engine bay & underneath. Like Jeff mentioned, I think that brown wire is the one that connects to the sensor in the taco plate. I couldn't find any other wires top side that matched it. It should have several tabs that hold it in place from underneath.

Thanks for taking a look for me. You are right it is the wire coming off the taco plate. I was able to pull it back down through the hole. Now where does it plug into?

Also The red wire coming off the Aux air cleaner. I routed it to the sensor on the plenum? I have a sensor on the motor right next to it. I seem to be short a wire there? Do I have the red wire off the Aux air cleaner in the right place? What color wire is pluged into the sensor on the motor? Thanks Tod

Still didn't fire it up today dry.gif . Right there but it got late & I was tired. Aparantly not tired enough to sleep as after an hour I came back dwonstairs. Still I am doing breakin bright & early at 7am. Then I'll change the oil & run her lik ehell for a while. Before loading her on the trailer for the trip. Hopefully all will go well with break in. If I have more issues. Screw it I am loading it up & bringing it anyway. smile.gif

Jamie, here's a couple of links to my website. Since I have the engine still apart I can't take any photos, but there are a lot of shots of the wiring on these pages. I hope I can put this back together based on these photos also.... idea.gif

Jamie regarding the taco plate. You'll have to remove the cover plate on it, to attach the wire. Should be very doable without dropping the portion with sensor and loosing your oil. Maybe remove one bolt, slide the cover over and reinstall the bolt so it sercures the main plate. There is also a grommet that the wire slides into before you attach it to the sensor. I'll check on the other wires soon as the lawn service leaves.

Jamie,
The aux air regulator ( I think that is what you meant), wire goes to a white wire ( #12 from 12 pin connector on relay board). It should be switched +12 volts.
Tom

Posted by: tod914 May 13 2010, 08:57 AM

Ignition wire harness - this has the wires that goto the coil - along with these is a green & red wire. this green & red wire attatch to the oil pressure switch in the hole by the distributor. the white wire that is in this harness attaches to the red wire on your AAR. It should have a plastic coupler on it.
The trigger point section of the harness also has a white wire that comes out. that attaches to air temp sensor.
Your plenium sensor has a rubber boot on it and a connector that will only allow it to go on one way. It's in the same wire section as the TPS.
Hope that helps. Too much stuff in the way to get you clear pictures.

Okay I've had a few hickups since WCR. Most of which are my fault I guess. When I couldn't get it going there. I brought it home deciding to throw my carbs on to get my motor broken in while I figured out my FI problem. I got part way into installing my carbs & decided I should just get it going with my FI. After not having it ready for WCR I figured I have time. So I wanted to do it right & once no matter how long it took. I also was ready to pour gas over it & torch it dry.gif .

After talking with a local guy about his experience with a Porsche mechanic. I went by to talk with him & see if he would reinstall my FI. I told him my problems & he said no problem. As it was he had a 914 he needed a 2.0 motor for. I had a running spare in my garage. We struck a deal that he would get my motor for his work. I dropped it off Memorial day. Turns out he could not get to my car then. My car ended up sitting outside in the rain headbang.gif . We are now 4 months later & besides the incredibly long wait. Not to mention a few hickups. I won't go into them. Let's just say it was par for the course on this restoration dry.gif .

Tommorow morning is supposed to be the day it starts. Please everyone cross your fingers that it starts & runs like it should. My luck with the car has to change at some point right confused24.gif . I want so much to bring my car back home. Driving it home would be even better

One thing I have learned with this resto! If I am having someone else work on my car. They are giving me a timetable. My paint took forever(over a year) as did my motor rebuild. Only things that got done in a timely manner I did myself. Well except for the fender section which my seattle teener croud helped me do smile.gif
(thanks again). I am an understanding guy. I have been a little to understanding with people during this resto. It has done nothing but cost me alot of time & money. I'm ready to torch the phucking thing again mad.gif

Posted by: kphimself Oct 15 2010, 09:49 PM

When i first got my car i took it to a local VW place to have the engine looked over and get running (had no clue about these cars), after a month and 1600 bucks they got it running (a simple tune up) then they said i needed to have a new oil dip stick tube fabricated that cost me 450 then out of no where i got a call i need to pay 5,800 for a new engine, after i saw it running, they said it didn't work. The dip stick thing they made was put together out of clear silcone like you use on a window. All it needed was a new piece of rubber that connects between the blower and the block but they crimped it off and screwed me over. I won't name the place in VA beach but i feel your pain, i ended up rebuilding the engine myself and learned never to pay anyone for work on a car, might not come out perfect but at least i'll learn in the process and it will get done in a timely manner. Shit it can't be any worse then these fools that call them shelf experts.

If I were going to pay someone to rebuild an engine - it would be Mark DeBernardi at Original Customs. For a stock rebuild or a 2056 he can turn it around in very little time. Highly recommend! Plus, he has a really big brain... biggrin.gif

Posted by: abayer1969 Oct 16 2010, 06:50 AM

But something to remember is the fact that we here on the East Coast have few available 914 Shops. For example the closest 914 owner to me is SWL in Ontario. Racer Chris is 5 hours away and that literally is the closest person that I would trust to work on my teener.

Yeah if he were closer that would have happened a long time ago sad.gif . If I have someone else build another motor for me. I may just ship it down to McMark. I have no plans of doing another resto anytime soon. I am going to lay low for a while & quit buying 914's. Going to sell at least 3 of my current cars. Get back to working on my v8 conversion. Debating on selling my roler Aubergine flared car also. Have most everything I need to do another v8 in it. Just not sure I want to do it. I want to get back to my buick 215 v8 914. Time for me to enjoy driving a 914 again.

Posted by: ConeDodger Oct 16 2010, 03:21 PM

Shipping both ways to McMark is no big deal. All you need is a pallet and some banding equipment. He has even delivered an engine to RDenauer or something like that. He is quick and reliable and runs 11+ minute miles. Not that it's relevent but I thought I would throw that in there biggrin.gif

For the most part my Creamsicle has been just sitting at this shop. Ouside getting rained on icon8.gif . Guy is really nice & I have just let this go on way to long. Swapped him a good 2.0 motor for the work he was supposed to be doing. Redid the FI system. Added all new vacumn hoses. Still not working & my distributor had issues. Sent it to McMark to get rebuilt. Had him rebuild it & got it back ready to install. Still not working. My fuel pump went bad. Brought him another I had on the shelf. I know it was working fine when pulled but had been sitting a good year & a half. Bagged on a shelf & looked brand new. It was completely dead. So I have another one coming from Craig at Camp. I'll drop it off wednesday. If it doesn't work or there is just another issue. I am going to finally just bring it home & figure it out.

I only took it to this guy because I was extremely frustrated at not figuring it out. He was supposed to be a FI guru & a good wrench. So I figured lets just get it finished & working. I dropped it off memorial day last year. It's been a nightmare having my car sitting out period. I should have just picked it up long ago. Guy had some health issues & a divorce. So I was okay getting put off some. Got kind of out of sight out of mind. I'll get an update next week. At least it still looks good huh confused24.gif

I may bring it down & leave it with McMark. Just let him figure it out & write a check when I pick it up to drive it home confused24.gif . I will put some time in it before that happens. Still I have 2 other conversions I need to work on. I just want this finished & running. Then it is going up for sale. Posted by: JRust Apr 30 2011, 01:11 PM

Okay well first thing was I needed a battery. Next I started checking wires. Fuel pump wasn't plugged in. Next was my distributor that McMark rebuilt for me was still sitting in the passenger seat. So I started by replacing the old distributor with the rebuilt one with petronix in it. I managed to get the wires backwords on the coil though headbang.gif . There was only the one green wire coming off the old distributor. I assumed that was the hot wire & not the ground. So I put the red hotwire from the new distributor on the same side the green wire was headbang.gif . Once I went to try turning it over I got smoke dry.gif . So out came the new rebuilt distributor hissyfit.gif . I put the old one back in & went to start it again. Turns over no problem but not firing. I listen for the fuel pump & don't hear anything. I then have my wife come out to turn on the car while I am under by the fuel pump. turning on the key doesn't make any difference with the pump. So it isn't getting power. I checked fuses & swapped relays. Next I am going to hotwire it to see if it is the pump.

Okay so I hotwired the fuel pump. Even straight power I get nothing. So the fuel pump is toast. I sprayed a little starter fluid in the intake. Got a nice little cough which is an improvement. Right now the fuel pump needs replaced. Which strangely enough was one problem at the shop. He said my fuel pump was flat out dead. I brought him 2 different pumps. 1st was bad & leaked. The second one I brought him was a good working unit. He told me he had put the fuel pump in dry.gif . I'm thinking it was just one of those times he tried to make me think he did some work on it. I'd be willing to bet the fuel pump I dropped off is sitting somewhere at his shop. I'll be calling him to see if thats the case. If not this is the second pump in the car that is completely dead. Which means there is some problem causing that. I don't have another pump so I'm stuck waiting until I do

Cough is good news. piratenanner.gif What kind of mechanic did you bring your car to? You gave him a good 2ltr for his work...I'm sorry for sounding a bit put out, but a year later???

Test the voltage at the fuel pump harness before you connect another pump. Also make sure the relay is good and the fuse hasn't been rigged. It's hard to believe you had 2-3 bad pumps, but hey who knows. Might want to just hot wire the next pump for now and see if you can get your motor running.

Yeah the cough is good news. I actually checked more fuel pumps before putting them in. Went through more like 5 but all had issues with leakage. I'm pretty sure this is the dead one. I should be able to get the working one from him this week. I will check the voltage from the harness too. What should it be putting out voltage wise with the key on?

As far as feeling put out confused24.gif . It's my own fault. I should have picked it up a long time ago. Guy had some serious personal & health issues come up. Still doesn't quite cover why it would take so long. So while I will never take a 914 back there. I also am not going to bash his business publicly. I hope you get things sorted out with your car. I love the creamsicles and hope you don't sell it.

Also you have a cool first name!! beerchug.gif

I know it is working & I have pressure. Now I don't think my injectors are working. Anyway McMark will figure it all out soon.

I brought my LE home today. After 10 months of being at this shop. I am in the same boat as when I dropped it off. Well some parts have been replaced. Not sure if I am any closer though. I won't get to mess with it until late saturday

Two hours on the clock and I just finished the 20min break in period. cool_shades.gif

OK, don't leave us hanging with the famous 1 year mystery engine problem..do tell. smilie_pokal.gif

I agree...spill it. What was the issue?

Posted by: JRust Jun 12 2011, 02:17 PM

Yeah spill it! Hopefully whatever it is doesn't make me look to big an idiot dry.gif

Posted by: JRust Jun 12 2011, 02:48 PM

Okay I know a few problems. Some of which were my problems. One was the fuel lines were hooked up backwords. I kept it the same when changing the pumps. which means I got it back from my other wrench that way dry.gif .
Also my ditributor was in 180 degree's off. Which I also managed to do after I had o swaped after burning up my rebuilt one with petronix dry.gif . Well I can lay claim to both those issues.

Oh well I am way past being proud on this car. I just want if finished & running biggrin.gif

Posted by: McMark Jun 12 2011, 05:09 PM

Yup, hooked up a fuel pressure gauge and saw no fuel pressure, but could hear the pump run. Swapped those lines and problem fixed.

Cranked and got a few sputters and pops, but nothing significant. Pulled the valve cover and set #1 to TDC for sure then pulled the distributor and checked the orientation of the distributor drive gear. That was 180* out. So flipped that around. Installed a set of points and condenser in the newly rebuilt distributor and double checked the trigger points were working. Installed everything and timed it by lining up the rotor with the line on the distributor.

Turned the key and it sputtered to life. 20 minutes later it's got the engine brake in finally done. But.... there's still some oddities to work out. It doesn't idle and a few other things. But I'm headed back in right now to double check everything and install a throttle cable so I can test drive it. wink.gif

Got the MPS tweaked a bit yesterday. The aneroid cells had become dislodged somehow. Maybe someone dropped the MPS at some point. But with the cells misaligned, it was causing an extra lean condition.

It is one filthy car after sitting through the previous year at the wrench who shall remain nameless. Now I just need to spend some time sorting out a few cosmetic problems. Also the rebuilt tranny is leaking byt he tailcone/intermediate plate. So I will be pulling it to replace that gasket. Kind of strange as all it has done is sit for a long time. Another update as it has been a while. I pulled the tranny that was leaking from the tailcone. It was a rebuilt one but the gasket got a little goobered when it was put on. I had another rebuilt tranny on my shelf so I just put it in there. The dash that I bought off ebay supposedly uncracked wasn't as I said before. It wasn't super obvious before. Now the cracks look more pronounced & annoy the hell out of me. I just bought a excellent uncracked dash for it. Damn things are spendy dry.gif . I started pulling out my intereior last night to get the dash off. I still need to get the lower dash out & then I am ready to pull it. While there are plenty of little things with my paint that drive me nuts. My car looks great just not perfect. At least I will have my interior as close to perfect as I can. There will be no cracks or tears in anything. I will take some pics for you guys soon biggrin.gif

Figured I needed to update my resto thread with the latest. After deciding to redo my interior floor after finding some rust by the seat mounts. I pulled all the tar mat off the floor. Wire brushed everything & treated the small rust area's. I had one little 1/8" hole I had to fill. I got that all done & moved onto the rear trunk.

It was not done well when I had it painted. It sitting outside at the shop didn't help the tailight leak. I had some minor rust there to deal with. Mostly because the guy who painted it didn't do the work in the trunk he should have. Anyway I completely stripped the rear trunk & prepped it for paint. Once I did that I wasn't happy with the front trunk. I stripped it & prepped it for paint too. After trying to used the rattle cans I had made when I got my car painted. I wasn't happy with the results. So I decided to go buy a paint gun & take my first shot at painting. Man painting is definitely not easy. I was happy with the rear trunk on my first attempt.

The front trunk I wasn't happy with. I was trying to paint basically the area where the spare sits. So everything below the shelf. I didn't do a good job of taping by the wall & ended up needing to redo the front trunk.

I also repainted the interior floor. I've got to pull my rear window & reinstall it. The windshield calking I used didn't cut it. I'll be doing that this week. Next weekend I plan to put the interior back in. The only thing I should have left after that is the front valance. One end by the tire had the fiberglass hole tear out by the screw. So now I get to learn to deal with fiberglass blink.gif

My plan for tomorrow is to finish hooking up the clutch at the pedal cluster. Then start my LE & back it out of the trailer. I've got to get into town to get some buytl tape to reinstall the rear window. Anyone think it would be worth the trouble to add a rear window defrost I have in another car? It was not a stock option but some were added from the factory. Once that is installed my interior goes back in. I do have to get the front valance fixed & back on also. But then the LE is finished. Although that is a big knock on wood. I've thought I had it finished way to many times sad.gif

Installing the glass is easy, the tougher part is obtaining the correct harness, switch then threading it through the tunnel & eng. bay wiring loom "snorkle" to power at the relay board. idea.gif

Well the car I pull it from should have the correct harness right? Is it part of the main wiring loom or just attached to it? I actually have it in 2 cars I could pull it from.

I didn't get out to do it this morning. Turns out there was a swap meet 20 minutes from my house in albany. I needed to go to napa to get the buytl tape. So I decided to detour & go by the swap meet. It was a total redneck fest for dirt track racing stuff. Had a buddy there selling a car so really just stopped to say hey. Glad I did as my buddy says you should go by this trailer. It's a tilt bed & he's only asking $400. So I go over to check it out. Old guy selling it is just trying to get rid of stuff. I just got my enclosed trailer so wasn't looking for one. I kinda shuffled my feet while talking to him. Said I don't need it but I've got $300 with me. He says sold & held out his hand evilgrin.gif . Even better is he is delivering to my house in another hour or so aktion035.gif .

Man you weren't kidding. I pulled everything I needed out of the wrecked 74 I have. IT was a serious PITA getting that wire through the sleeve in the engine bay. So while I worked on the LE a good part of the day today. I really only accomplished installing the rear window & getting the wiring run. So my rear window defrost is all done & installed. I have a harness I need to install in my car, can you expand on what you did to pull yours?

QUOTE(John Jentz @ Feb 12 2012, 01:16 PM) *

I have a harness I need to install in my car, can you expand on what you did to pull yours?

The car I pulled mine from was no problem. I just cut the rubber sleeve in the engine bay.

The install will go something like this. It is helpful to have a buddy to help feed the wire in the engine bay.

1st. Disconnect your battery!Your backpad, center console & any carpet on the center tunnel all need to be removed. You will be running wire down the tunnel with the rest of the wiring. Your car also need to be up in the air so you have access to the the main wiring. This job is easier if the motor is out but that isn't necessary. My motor was in my LE when I did the install.

2nd. Check your defrost harness for any cracks or problems. Lay it out in the interior along the center tunnel to see where it should go. Clip the end with the black plug about an inch wide. Clip the wires 1 ft below & put the clipped end by your battery. You will reattach it once you have routed your wires through.

3rd. Get under your car. Pull the rubber sleeve out of the firewall & the front of the engine shelf. There is a lip to both sides that hold it in place. Get it loose & pull the firewall (bottom end) & roll it back on itself an inch or so. This will clear the hole for you to be bale to feed your wire through to the engine bay.

4th. Pull the little square metal cover at the firewall on the center tunnel. Feed the end of the wiring you clipped through firewall following the main wiring. Once in the engine have your buddy pull through the wiring until it branches. The wiring loom splits as the wires go up to the glass. Feed through what you need to reach the relay board. Remember you still have 1 ft of wire to reattach. So take that into account.

5th. With your wire in the engine bay you need to snake it through with the main wiring through that foot long rubber sleeve. This is the biggest PITA of the project. It is fairly easy to get it started in the bottom. Feeding it through the top is not easy. You can use a coat hanger or something similar. Problem is it is so tight you may scrape your main wiring in there. Not a good idea. In the end I made one cut in the top of the rubber sleeve. Once I made that cut feeding it through became much easier. Once that is through the sleeve. Just push both ends of the sleeve back into their respective holes. Reattach your plug that connects to the relay board.

6th. Take the 2 screws holding the relay board out so you can move it. You need to connect the ground below the relay board. There is the one bolt below with a 10mm nut on it. Attach that & reinstall your relay board. You can plug the defrost into it if you are ready.

7th. Get back inside your car. Route the wiring right next to the main wiring running through the center of your car. Follow it all the way to the fuse box/board. Take the 2 screws holding your fuse box in place. Connect your ground the to bolt on the wall. Another 10mm nut sits on it. I plugged mine to the fuse box where it was plugged into the car I pulled it from. This was to the 5th spot from the right. This is to the row closest to the wall between you & the gas tank. Reinstall the fuse box.

8th. The wiring to your actual switch which branches off next to the wires you just connected to the fuse box. You will route from your fusebox under the dash over next to your radio. The defrost switch sits between your radio & your cigarette lighter. The hole is already in the metal part of the dash. Typically the basket weave will be covering it. You just need to open the hole in the basket weave & install your switch.

Sorry that is really long winded. I guess I should have taken pictures as I went through the process. Didn't think of doing that though confused24.gif

Congratulations! I have always liked the look of the defroster rear window in our cars. My 1st 914, a '73 2.0 came with it and I have a perfect defroster glass and nicely restored defroster harness and switch for my six build. So even though my car came w/o a defroster rear window, it will have one when done.

Posted by: JRust Feb 28 2012, 03:00 PM

Well I dropped off a bunch of parts to my powder coater a few weeks back. Called to check on them friday. Turns out my guy got sent out of state for work. So all my parts are locked in his shop & haven't been worked on yet mad.gif . Sucks as I took all my extra seat mount/rails to get powder coated. Including the ones from my LE. I'll be lucky to get them before I leave on the 12th for Vegas. I've been holding off finishing my interior until I got those back. So I am just going to get everything else put in place this week. Worst case I will pull them out of my suby project so I have an actual seat. Still annoying as hell but my powder coater does good work & is very reasonable. So wait I will as I have a pair of 16x8 fuchs coming that go to him next.

So tonight after work I am installing the vinyl pieces that sit on the seat brace & the side of the tunnel between the seats. Then the backpad get's put back in. Although I've got a little swapping to do there. My previous uncracked backpad decided to crack on top by the seat belt on the drivers side. I was more than a little pissed as I barely leaned right there when it happened sad.gif . So I need to pull that side off another pad I have to get it back to uncracked & pristine smile.gif . If that all goes well I will finish installing the carpet.

Posted by: JRust Feb 29 2012, 11:11 PM

Well I got the vinyl & carpet all done. My backpad need some work. I may just try to find a better one. I have 3 & one of them would be fairly nice. Problem is the bottom on all 3 have issues. Of course they are covered so it's not exactly obvious. I really want to have the interior perfect.

I was able to piece together a good backpad from 2 of the ones I had. Had to do a little work with the vinyl on the bottoms. I have my interior all installed but kind of temporarily. My seat rails/mounts are off getting powder coated. I put some of those in so I can drive it tomorrow & give it a good shakedown. I'll be picking up my new powdercoated parts tomorrow & will drive the LE up to get them.

I also did some fiberglass work for the first time on my LE front Valance. Had one of the holes ripped out to the side. So redid that corner lip & fixed a few small cracks. Then I painted it last night. I still have a little of the orange peel look to my paint. You've got to be very close to really notice it. Plus it's a repro Valance anyway so concours shape it will never be. I'll shoot some pics tonight biggrin.gif

Don't forget that OE finish isn't mirror smooth. These are 'economy cars'. A little orange peel is period correct.

Lookin' great. drooley.gif

Posted by: JRust Mar 11 2012, 12:33 AM

I am basically finished with the LE finally. It is absolutely filthy in the pics. I am paying someone to detail it tomorrow. Give it the serious cut buff wash & wax it needs. While the carpet is all new & doesn't need cleaned. All the vinyl needs treated. The pics make the interior look much worse than it is. It is as close to pristine as I can get it. I'll go ahead & upload the pics I have. The only thing I have left to do is install the engine trunk lid. Then I drive it the 30 minutes to the detailers place. I leave it there for about 5 hours. Only thing that sucks is the weather is so crappy. By the time I drive it to vegas it will be filthy again. At least it will clean up easier after the wax.

I can't even begin to say how happy I am to have it all together & finished. w00t.gif

I had them powder coated. I don't doubt the rails will wear off. I put some lithium grease on them hoping it will keep a while. They moved great lubed up & didn't do any damage yet. Of course it hasn't had any real use yet smile.gif

What did your LE end up selling for and where is it's new home?

I turned out great! You should be proud!

I haven't actually sold it yet. The guy who bought it on ebay turned out to be trying a scam. I won't do ebay again. It is in the classifieds for sale here. I am in no hurry. I am content to keep it & drive it. So while it's officially still for sale. I am not actively doing anything to sell it confused24.gif . Had a rear main seal leak that I just fixed. I'll drive it for another month before I store it for winter.

http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=181320. I've worked on this car and driven it and I think it's worth every penny. Especially considering how (in my opinion) the LE cars are going to climb in resale faster than the 914/4s as nice examples of our cars become more desirable.

No BS: I bought a bumble Bee this year. I did not buy the "Car". I bought the COA & VIN that match the engine and body. Get what I am saying. Without the correct vin & COA from Porsche...All you got is a regular good ol 914.

Tonight is bitter sweet. It has been a long road since my restoration began. So many headache's & a few nightmare experiences with shops. I am happy to have this chapter of my life with my restoration come to a close. It was really hard to see it go. I am still incredibly worried something will happen in transport. Or the new owner Tommy won't be happy with it. I have always been open & honest with my car. Probably to my own detriment. I would rather talk something down & have someone be really happy. Than to praise it & have some disappointment.

Will I do one again? I dont think so to this extent. At least not a bone stock resto. I think I'll stick to my conversions. I'm going to get my v8 car setup & just enjoy driving my 914 again. I think I have had enough of the multiple 914 projects. I have 3 right now but really the v8 is the only one that is staying.

So no regrets here but I am a little sad tonight to have my Creamsicle gone for good. I am glad it is going to a fellow 914world member. I hope he will enjoy it for many years to come. Thanks to everyone who has helped me over the years with this project. There are to many to thanks but I will give a big shout out to my buddy Mark at Original customs. pray.gif He was my saving grace on more than one occasion. So much so I made the 9 hour drive to his place I think 3 different times for work.

Linda and I will be traveling through the NE this Summer and hopefully we can connect. At Thanksgiving I met my niece's boyfriend who is a bio engineer student at San Diego State...and guess where he lived and worked until recently...Yup, Corvalis. He worked at your HP plant. It's a small world. I showed him a picture of a 914 and asked if he had seen any of those running around his home town. smile.gif

Ironically I bought a Triumph TR7 convertible last night. It has a Buick 215 v8 in it & I couldn't resist. Motor is built & I am supposed to get the dyno of 260hp to the rear wheels. Guy had it sitting in his garage parked since 1995. The body has a few dings but has NO rust! Overall it is in good shape but I admit it was a weak moment for me to go look at a car. If it wasn't for the motor I would not have bothered

On the transport I wasn't thrilled with anything about it. It is just temporary. They were only hauling it 120 miles to Vancouver. Where it is getting loaded on a Semi for the trip to Florida. Not enclosed transport there either but better than last night's.

Yeah it was a fiasco with those guys last night. They came & left to go get another car. Then came back to load again. I was not there when they put it in place. I had planned to be but they were gone for a good hour so I left to go grab the TR7 I bought. When I came back they had it on with the other 3 cars behind it. To say I was less than thrilled with it would be an understatement mad.gif

So you're saying that the 'Sicle wasn't even on the transporter before you were off buying another car? lol-2.gif Guess I win that bet!

Be sure to tell the guys on the Triumph forum that you bought the car to swap the engine into a 914...that should get a reaction. idea.gif Better yet, tell them you're swapping it into an X/19.

I used to have a 1980 TR8...bought it from the original owner back in 1996. The car only had around 35K miles. It was a nice car and EXTREMELY reliable. The only work I did on it was stuff i wanted to do...the car never left me stranded.

My current British ride is a 1973 TR6!

Damn, I feel bad for buying it now! lol

I just happen to discover 914World and Jamie's restoration thread in searching LE Can Am cars, just looking for old memorabilia, ads, pics, etc. I spent an entire afternoon reading the entire thread and was happy to discover so many 914 buffs like myself (I've owned two). rolleyes.gif

I contacted Jamie about his car and over the course of a month or so, getting to know him, found him to be a pretty nice guy, honest, informative, generous and moreover, reminded me of an elderly gentleman who after pulling me over not having my first 914 for 24 hours to check out my car and later befriended (this guy was a 914 expert, "Dr. Phil" the Porsche doctor I called him, owned 18 914s over his lifetime, offered to help work on my first car and found my second one and we became friends before he passed away).

My correspondence with Jamie over the last few months has been really great. Not just in regards to the car, but getting to know him and the kind of guy he is. He's been very helpful, honest, informative, generous with his time, and resources throughout our correspondence and sale of the car. I know he put a lot of time and effort into this car, so even though he wanted to let it go, I know it's personal when you put so much into it, which is one of the reasons that made it special for me too. beerchug.gif

I'm very happy to have this car as my third 914 (hoping to sell my nice red '75 soon to help pay for it!). It will have a good home and be well enjoyed - all thanks to Jamie who put so much into it. Unfortunately, I'm not so mechanically inclined as most of you guys are, so I do appreciate all the work that was done. pray.gif It's funny, I never had any intention of buying another 914 until I came across this thread.

I'm very much looking forward to receiving the car. I bought it a couple weeks ago now and it'll be another week and a half before it arrives, hopefully without the rear window blown out! lol! If so, Anybody know where I can find another rear window with defroster? confused24.gif

So anyway, I'm very happy to know Jamie, my first friend on 914 World, happy to discover this community of enthusiasts and experts of a shared love for this car and very happy to soon be driving a beautiful 914 LE that is just that much more special from all the time, energy, love and effort that went into making it into what it is today. Thank you, Jamie! And thank you 914 World!

Seriously, though. I am happy for you and think it's a great car. I am happy to see it come to the East Coast. You are only three hours away from me and Phil W...maybe you can make a road trip to the South Carolina LowCountry some day. At the very least we'll see you at the Tropical Ramble next year!

Posted by: tumamilhem Dec 8 2012, 01:42 PM

That would be cool! Yeah, I was hoping to sell my nice red '75 before buying the car, but it seemed there was other interest in it so I had to go ahead and buy it. Need to sell my red one now! driving.gif

I don't know who Phil W is or anybody on 914 World that is in my city or surrounding area either, so it would be nice to meet up with other enthusiasts. beerchug.gif

Oh man... you just brought a tear to my face. Yes, that's my buddy Phil.

Phil did a lot of work on my Scarlet Red '75 914 that I have up for sale. He was the one who actually found my '75 in the paper as I was at his house having lunch and taking a break from working on my '74.

I met Phil within less than 24 hours of buying my first 914. I as driving around (we lived in close proximity, within about 5 or 6 miles of each other, me in Riverside and him in Ortega). This guy kept following me around in his pickup truck, trying to get my attention. At a stop light he pulled along side of me and yelled, "Hey man! Pull over! I want to talk to you!" So I did. He was inquiring about my car, which was a real junker. I told him I needed to fix this, get parts for this, etc. He said, "Oh man, I got so many extra parts you can have 'em!" (And boy he wasn't kidding! His garage from floor to ceiling was nothing but 914 parts!) "I can help you fix that!" So he gave me his number the next weekend I called him and said, "Hey, this is Tommy with the 914." He said, "Hey man! Come on over and we'll fix up your car!" Therein began my friendship with Phil, which lasted until his death.

I nicknamed him "Dr. Phil - The Porsche Doctor". In his garage, he had a street-type sign that said Porsche Doctor or something of that nature, so I nicknamed him that. He did major surgery on my car out of the goodness of his heart. He took me to the Sport Car Vintage Car Races in Savannah so we could watch all these 914s and the like race. I was at his house every weekend. We went on outings with his very nice wife Liz, had lunch together, and work on my car - a LOT. He was almost finished restoring a beautiful signal orange car for his wife. I mean this thing was impeccable. He had 4 other parts cars in his backyard. Plus one. I remember the phone call - "Hey Tom! You'll never guess what I found in my garage! MY OTHER CAR!" I told you he had floor-to-ceiling parts! He has so many parts, that they completely covered his black 914! It had been hidden for so long, he could never remember what had happened to it! His wife had a kiln in the garage (she made homemade pottery) and finally made him clean up the garage because she was afraid with all that un-organization, that the kiln would eventually set fire to something!

Phil had had a couple of different cancers he had been fighting. He lived about 20 years longer than the doctors told him though. And in the end, it wasn't even cancer that killed him. It was a brain tumor, even though they killed the tumor. They didn't remove the tumor because he had has so much kimo, they though he would be too weak to remove it. So they killed the tumor, but the mass eventually pressed up against his brain and that's what killed him. Phil was always in great spirits and very active for a 74 year old guy. His wife was 41, which had something to do with it. These two were so great together. Like a couple of kids, honestly. They went on trips, hiking, always working on his cars, etc. But it was his spirit that I think made him live so long with the cancer. I remember one afternoon the three of us were having lunch at his house. He was eating cake and a few other things that wouldn't be so healthy. He said to me, "You know what the great thing about having cancer is? You don't gain any weight! I haven't gained a goddamn pound in years!" lol That was Phil's personality. He as a great guy, generous, honesty, considerate and very warm, friendly and welcoming. He was a good friend, as was his wife Liz, and a great guy. And he literally knew every single nut and bolt on that car.

It's funny, because just yesterday I was wearing a t-shirt he gave to me. It's an old t-shirt with a picture of a 914 on it. He also wanted to give me his favorite leather bomber jacket, but I just couldn't take it. After he died, his wife Liz said he left it for me. But somehow we lost touch. I didn't know about the funeral until after the fact and then wasn't able to reach her soon after our last conversation.

Thank you so much for this picture. I don't have one of him or us. It's good to see my old buddy again.

I'll never forget him.

I almost bought that car. But, tumamilhem beat me to it.

I drug my feet because of the reconstructed title. Guess I waited too long
