914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Urgently need Rajay-Crown Turbo information

Posted by: 914rrr Nov 29 2008, 11:07 PM

Any Corvair, piston aircraft and/or turbo old schoolers out there?

I have what I believe is a Rajay Turbo with Crown components on it. The turbo was part of a Crown turbo kit that was installed in '74 on my '73 914 2.0. The intake on the compressor side looks like a 3 bolt Corvair. My understanding is this turbo was the same (or similar to) the Crown update kits used on turbo Corvairs.

I really need some info on Rajay and/or Crown flow sizes on the compressor side and the turbine side (B,E,F - flow?), AR #'s, parts sources, part numbers, competent rebuilders, etc.

I have a good reprint of a M&W / Rajay turbo service manual I can 'trade' for info as well.

Thanks for the reply. I'll call Turbo City tomorrow for info, but parts they don't have. Reply from eBite auction asking for Rajay parts:

"Dear 914rrr,

Sorry, those parts are no longer avaliable. I have some compressor wheels,
compressor housings, turbine housings.

Thanks

-turbocity"

I already emailed Marty. We spoke a few years back when I first owned this car.

Parts I can't help you with. But if you want to talk to someone about turbo flow/knowledge...Ray is my Godfather. Yes, Ray - The founder of Rayjay. He kinda knows a little bit....

Already have that one. But yours is waaaaaay better than the one I have. Any chance I could get a hi-res copy of that? Any other Crown documents?

Not likely. He started Rayjay in 1957...or '58. He is the inventor of the Rayjay turbo - and one smart SOB when it comes to turbo's (and a whole lotta other stuff!). Anyway, I thought maybe if you were having turbo trouble/issues, he might be able to answer some questions for you?

Thanks!

OK, are all Rajay center section components the same? Since I have a M&W service manual, were the Rajays that M&W used the same as the other Rajays and are the part #'s for internal components the same?

The turbo is sometimes squealing and seems to be binding. I'm hoping it's just come crud in between the housing and the wheel, but preparing for the worst (worn out bearing).

Thanks Doc! I may take you up on that. What year? Condition? How much shipped to 37716? Do you have any of the exhaust pipes, muffler, etc.?

BTW, how's the Corvair build-up coming along? I may have some Corvair contacts for you.

You might try contacting Steve Goodman of Rear Engine Specialists. Steve's been around hot rodded Corvairs for decades, and super nice guy to boot! I'm sure he could tell you whatever info you're looking for regarding the Crown Corvair turbo upgrades.

Pull it apart soak and scrub the cartridge.. Port and coat those old housings..
Turbo should be like new as long as the cratridge is clean.

I have the 180hp unit which is the late model. I have all the tubing so far as I know. The exhaust will do you no good as the corvair uses solid log like manifolds on each side. I have 2 sets if you need them smile.gif

For cost of parts and shipping, just PM me.

As for my build, I am waiting to get the heads and crank back so I can start assembly.

Can't help on the turbo stuff, but just wanted to say I look forward to seeing how this car turns out.

We talked about it before, I actually bid against you way back when from the ebay WI auction. IIRC

I realize you want to keep it periodish, but toss that turbo in the trash and replace it with something a little more modern and available. Turbos have come a long way since the Rayjay turbo. Compressor wheels and turbine wheels have been developed that are light years ahead in efficiency. The turbo lag will be less and the compressor efficiency will be higher, that means cooler intake charge and more power with less detonation. Plus a newer Garrett means you can get every part you need for it.

If the turbo is making a screeching noise it is done. Bearings are on the way out and the wheels are making contact with the housings. Either way you probably have permanently damaged the turbo.

I have a Crown 914 turbo kit installation manual that includes the diagram that Jeff posted, together with the Crown sales flyer for the kit - a total of 11 pages. I suppose I could copy or scan them for you, if these are what you're looking for.

Also, I used to have a lot of Corvair and Crown stuff because I was contemplating putting a turbo Corvair engine in my 914. The Crown high performance compressor housing for the Corvair was definitely an E-flow unit, and, if I recall correctly, the A/R was 1.6, but that may have been the A/R of their high performance exhaust turbine housing instead.

Agreed. If the turbo is hidden under the back trunk, no one will see it anyway, or even know that it is not "OEM Rayjay"

Here is a site with some good turbo info, maps, calculators.

Maybe look for a small IHI turbo, as they are a little wider but less tall than others, and so may fit under your trunk better.

Yes, I'd be interested in copies of the Crown installation manual and the sales flyer. I have copies of both, but they are lousy. Please PM me to arrange email or snail mail.
