Oh and BTW I like that RARE trunk crest
Posted by: carr914 Jan 3 2009, 08:55 AM
There is a gearing differnce and the intermediate plate is different. The intermediate plate has the bell-crank for the throttle linkage.
That pic of the 2 trannies - one is a six, one is a regular 4, but I did get 2 914-6 trannies out of the 8 I got with the car.

#41 was running the 2.5 SS for 30,000 miles with 7 inch BBS with Michelins. Some where in there these stress cracks appeared. There is no rust on this car in any place in the rear of this car or longs. I believe that there is a lot of stress put on this area of the car as the underside of transmission is bolted there in the center. It is like the step of a ladder. This is one of the main points of the GT kit and that is why I am putting Rick J's kit in.
With the wider wheels like I will be running and the bigger HP it is something to consider.
Bob
Posted by: carr914 Jan 3 2009, 06:55 PM
I'm not sure of the exact area of the shot since it is a close-up. But that is at a seam which the kits don't cover, which I think put more stress on the seams.
Also the plan for this car is a restore 914-6 GT that I probably won't drive much, in that I have another more Hot-Rod 914-6 Conversion. Yes the Real Six (673) will get a good high HP motor, but it will not get stressed the way I have other cars.
Also if need be I have the templates for the stiffening kit that I could make in the future and add if need be

T.C.,
I just wanted to point out that I believe the kit strengthen this part. You see the place where the jack goes so you now should know where this is. Sorry to make every one guess where it was in the car. I am more intimate with every part of my car as I am so close to it. Now that I have 1/3 of my GT kit in my welding is getting much better. This will mean less grinding for me.

A few more pieces.
a 3.2 Oil Pump and the Electromotive Crankfire Trigger Wheel. When I bought my Electromotive, it was missing the trigger wheel. A friend had the wheel, the oil pump and a set of $2,000 cams that I picked up for a song.

I just wanted to point out that I believe the kit strengthen this part.
I don't think so. This part is a double-wall and the GT piece is on the other side of that double-wall. There's 1/4" of air between the spot-welds inside the trunk and the GT "reinforcement" on the other side.
What people don't realize, the GT chassis kit was a complete shot in the dark by Porsche. They added a few patches where they thought they might add some strength. They were under tremendous time pressure to get those cars ready for the track, this wasn't a well thought out and engineered product.
I'm sure there's quite a few people today who could come up with better solutions ...

The cams are Elgin 310/296 grind for a 2.8 race motor. This motor will be a twin-plug, Factory P&Cs, Carillo rods, Weber 46's, built on a sand-cast aluminum case. I think it will be at least 300hp.
My other motor that will be done 1st will be a 2.7, Single-plug, RS P&Cs, aggresive cams (don't have the specs handy), balanced factory rods, Weber 40's on a magnesium 7R case that has already been machined, shuffle-pinned etc. I expect this one will be 250 hp. Both motors will be Dyno'd
I base the projected HP numbers on the last motor I had built, which was a 2.5 Twin-Plug.

here is the 2.5 on the Dyno

...I agree with SirAndy...I have been researching the web and looking through historical books for placement and attachment of the stiffening plates.
This is what I have found.
CONUS - most of the people that have added their stiffening plates have actually applied them to the outside vertical wall of the boxed section only and have not carried the additional metal over the seam. This is focusing more stress to the spot welds along the seam. The 90 degree sections just above the seam would act like "live" hinges under extreme stress. The stiffening plates end at least 6 to 9 inches forward of the trans-axle cross member. I would seam weld all that is shown in your picture on both sides.
Europe - Porsche welders were not known to produce beautiful welds. Most of them were pretty uguly in fact. But note the wrapping of the metal over the seam in the attached photos. This wrap ties the two 90 degree bends with the seam and is much more stronger than just laminating the vertical wall.

T.C.
Have you thought about the Brad Meyeur kit? I've heard that it adds alot more structural rigidity...
Posted by: carr914 Feb 19 2009, 06:55 AM
I'm doing the Engman as it is really overkill, I have one on another car, and it is already purchased.
I say overkill, in that I've replaced the entire longitudinal from the rear wheel to the front and i also used a clamshell over that. Replaced part of the drivers side long. Replaced the entire floor. Adding the Engman only strengthens all that. The Engman is very well made.
I know Brad, in fact he brokered this car to the owner before me. I have no experience with his kit, nor do I know anybody that has it, so I went with what I know works well.

A Mini-Poll question within a thread:
Since I'm putting so many Real GT Parts on this restoration would Mini-Lites on the rear look out of place?
Like This
I say go for it!
Seems like you are doing the "period correct" style of restoration/GT upgrade?
If I remember correctly some GT's had the minilites for the same reason the 911 ST did.. Fuch's with that offset/width were not made yet?
I personally think it looks pretty cool...
Posted by: MDG Mar 12 2009, 07:21 PM
Firstly, what you've done so far is fantastic! I can't wait to see more. As far as your mini-poll, my humble opinion will always lead to Fuchs as far as wheel choice goes; what a genius piece of design/engineering.
Lastly, a question; didn't the GT's that ran with the Mini-Lites all have widened rear flares? I thought that was why they went with the Mini's in the first place - once the standard flare was widened there were no Fuchs available in the wider size so they put on the Mini-Lites

I didn't know that. I always wondered why vintage photos often showed 914 GT's with Minilites on the rear and Fuchs on the front. Now I see.
That said, I still prefer either all Fuchs or all Minilites.

It looks like the inner fender lip is non existent on the yellow car above the minlites.

Nice idea on the biopsy tool. I know exactly what you are taking about. I am assuming you have to be in the medial industry to get one of those? Or is there a source of these for every day people?
Regarding the punch, how is he making the jig?
I was thinking about this myself and I was wondering if you could create a template (MS Word or similar) for the characters used on the sticker (0-9, etc.). Then using those characters, create and print a dimensionally correct paper template with all of the sticker info info on it. You would then align this template over your sticker and use a custom hole punch to punch each hole one by one.
I was thinking that the custom hole punch might be created by selecting a drill bit of the correct diameter (those holes are pretty small), drill a hole in a steel plate with the bit, then sharpen flat one edge fo the bit and polish the surface of the block to complete the punch. I guess if you wanted to get really crazy, you could convert an existing hole punch with the custom bit and block.

If you go to my "pissed off & need advice" thread about the compliance sticker there is a link to a thread on the Early911 forum about the same problem. There is a member there that offers a kit that includes the 5mm Biopsy tool, 2 correct stickers and 2 practice stickers for $30 shipped (quick). Compare that to 2 stickers from AA for $22 plus shipping and it's deal. Use the practice stickers - I didn't practice enough.
As far as the jig for the Vin#, I think it is being made out of 2 pieces of metal with the complete grid, so it can be used time & time again.

My 1st completed Compliance sticker to replace the one that the Knucklehead at the shop took off.
I think that once applied, smoothed out and some Signal Orange showing through the holes it will look OK

Update on #673 - Nothing has been done in the last 3 weeks. When I was there last I needed to order the crossmember that is right in front of the seats. I ordered the parts from AA and they were delivered 2 weeks later. In the meantime the shop owner went to Paris with his girlfriend. After I bought #1724, I realized that 2 complete crossmembers came with the car - one set from AA & one nice set out of a donor car. I asked the shop not to install the piece I bought from AA so I could return it. I brought them over the donor piece along with some other parts from #1724 that can go on this car and picked up the pieces that I need to send back to AA. Nothing wrong with the parts from AA, but it's now something I didn't need to spend money on. The shop was going to put the donor crossmember in after I left and finally the new floor pans can go in. I hope that things will move along faster now.

And upon further evaluation #673 will become my GT Recreation and #1724 will be the street car.
This was based on with all the welding and stiffening that has been done #673 will be the stronger car. So it will get the 2.8 Twin-Plug and all the Real GT bits.
#1724 as it is more original with no metal being replaced will be the Street 914-6.

Hi Tom
I noticed that your C of A says build date 4/70 but your Vin is 422 earlier than one of mine and my build date is 3 / 70 !!!! (car # 1095) then I see that your door sticker says 2 / 70. I know of at least one other case of incorrect factory info .
I guess C of A's aint the last word now are they ?
Is this the car from Florida that came with a load of GT parts ? 906 oil cooler etc. etc. ?
I wanted that package.
Hey fill me in on the VIN sticker repro deal.
I have my original but it's on the door jamb that was replaced .
If a repro can be done well I don't have to risk trying to move my original to the new jamb.
Please write when you have a chance.
Thank you

TC it looks like they removed the center tunnel, did they?
and teh cross brace is new or removed?
I have to remove both on my 914 to get the floors clean enough for my taste to por-15 in there.
As it sits now it is just light surface, but that will change fast into my floors rotting from the center tunnel out unless taken care of.
Can you ask them how much that job sucked? I asked around this board and nobody answered.

Rory,
CoA's (Certificate of Authenticity for those noobies) are close to worthless and the 1 for this car is an older one when they used to give you more info.
No this is not the car that came with all the GT parts (that is #1724, that I'm also re-doing) but I made the Executive decision that this car will get the GT parts.
I will send you a pm about the door jam compliance sticker. You will never get the old one off in one piece.

No the Center Tunnel was not removed. The cross brace is new to this car (it came out of a donor car)

Hi Chad,
Stratton Motorsports in Orlando is doing all the Welding & Paint. I will re-assemble the car.
I really don't know what I will do will the car, but probably not HSR - with the 2.8 Twin-Plug I would be put in the catagory with cars that will kick the snot out of this car. Plus you can't use Electro-motive crank-fire igntion which this car will have.

but jeeeeez do you really have to let the skin flash rust in that hot humid enviroment ??
a bit of primer would have gone a long way, and then no need to media blast
Posted by: carr914 Nov 29 2009, 06:34 AM
Pete, I agree the flash rust doesn't look pretty, but #1, the shop did not think that it would take them this long, & #2, there was so much structual rust that is would have had to been media blasted anyway.
The nice thing now is after blasting, we are moving to the completion of this stage.

No Mark, that is a 914-6 GT Cooler, also used in 910's. The other cooler above it is a RX-7 Cooler, they are almost the same size.

Not a difficult mod at all, and like you said, better to use with a more modern cams.
I bought 2 sets (one set for my 2.7 & one set for my 2.8) of 4 bearing cam towers off Pelican Classifieds fairly inexpensive.

If those are AA flares, would you kindly measure the rear flare from the inside wheel well panel to the inside lip of the flare at the center. I basically need to know if my existing wheel/tire will fit.

Dumb question perhaps, but what does a billet intermediate plate do besides add bling to your tranny?

Mike, Thanks for the compliments.
These gauges were just rebuilt by Mark at Vintage ( he's in the Vendor section), the 250klm Speedo I bought on eBay for $20, The 10,000rpm Tach is a rebuilt 930 and the Combo gauge is custom. I had the faceplate (and backplate) for the Triple in my stash (
) from years ago. I sent Mark the plates, a 911 Temp/Press gauge and a 914 Gas Gauge. I know Vintage makes a Quad gauge.
I just like the look of the Triple.

TC, how much does the 10k tach cost to get rebuilt/converted from a early 911 8k tach? And would you possibly have a line on another $20 kilometer speedo?
Posted by: campbellcj Feb 21 2010, 12:23 PM
Very nice dash setup! I am getting closer to installing the quad gauge I got from Mark long ago.
I'm curious what the red zone on the KPH speedo is for?
Don - I just had an early 911 tach converted to a 10K dial and circuitboard replaced (so it works with an MSD now without an adapter, and doesn't bounce) - it was $200 and change. The cost will vary depending on the parts and labor your core requires.

Compliance with the law ;-)
In Germany at least but I believe through the Euro zone there must be a red mark on the speedo at 50 k/h. It's basically the 'in-city' speed limit at 31 m/h

Who cares what the previous owner thinks of it. I know plenty of us would not have the chops to take on that resto .
My only problem is after reading your other post. I thought I was going to see a completed car. Now after reading through 13 pages of posts. I'm left blue balled
I can't wait to see it finished. It will be absolutely beautiful.

Excellence did a feature a while back on the Dauer 962 - a race car converted to a street car converted to a race car to fit through a loophole in Le Mans rules about 'limited production sports cars.' As a street car, it was required to have the 50 km/h red zone. On a 400 km/h speedo, it was but a teeny dot...

Well Gary is recovering nicely and is back at work. He doesn't have his stamina yet and he has to watch the Heat and how long he is at the shop.
I stayed in touch with Gary & his son Jason every week. Unfortunately Jason didn't touch my car in the last month because, "it's Dads job"

In defense of Jason, the shop is kinda divided in 2. Gary likes Porsches and Jason is an expert on 60's VW Buses. In the last few years, the Porsche & racecar side has been down, while it seems the Bus business is pretty good. They do help each other and I would rather have Gary working on the car.

Just a note on the rear Minilites. I know you have elected to go with RSR finish and have moved beyond this but it bears noting that Weidman Wheels has made several sets of Minilite 'look' wheels using Superlite wheels which are cheap and available now. Harvey chops them and widens them. Last trip I made to see Harvey he had a set he had made for RUF... Nice period correct look. I will be going with 16X7 front and 16X8.5 wheels in RSR finish that Harvey made for me.

Eric,
Those harness guides are a great idea. I understand the concerns you had in trying to replicate their design so I came up with my own idea.
You can buy these square U-bolts with a 3 5/8" inner dimension, perfect for my 3 inch belts.
I'm going to weld on some extra thick washers, chop off the excess and send them off to the powder coater. They come in various sizes - I just happened to choose 3/8 inch bolts. You can get 7/16 and 1/2 inch also. These particular ones are Stanley part #N244-996.
Thanks for the inspiration.

The square U-bolts (3/8" thread, mfg unspecified) shown on the McMaster site list a working (not ultimate) strength of 1000 lbs. Each.
Anything like this will, I suspect, be ultimately limited to the strength of the firewall if that's what the're bolted to. (If they're part of the cage, you're probably using s different technique for the belt guides to start with.)
Back-of-the-envelope - 2000 lb strength, 100 lb torso, 10g impact.
I think 3/8" is too small for my comfort, but 7/16" might be OK. I'd want to see the specs.
The rear axle and leaf spring mounts on my half-ton truck are in the half-inch range and I promise you they see more than 2000 lb loads on a regular basis.
This is not a recommendation, just a suggestion to consider the loads.

I agree, I've been building race/ rallye/ dakar cars for many years and I would personally never attach my harness to that firewall, but like I said, that is my humble opinion....... consider a simple 50 kmh impact and the forces involved......you will be scared how much force your bodymass upon impact will generate and what it will do to a flimsy firewall.....
These cars are not structural wonders to start with..........plus they are 35+ years old....

Properly, those loops are belt _guide_ loops - not primary attachment points. This allows the belts to be mounted much closer to (or to) the floor. Mounted to the firewall near the floor puts most if that load in shear, while the guide loops pick up only a fraction in tension.
Posted by: badm Nov 29 2010, 10:12 AM
I was less commenting on the firewall, and more to the product he chose to use for his mount, if you install the proper type of mounts in the boxed portion of the firewall as done on the GT's it has quite a large amount of support. Be safe, thats all. Badm.

Also you MUST use proper backing-plates or large, hardened washers on the other side of the firewall. Check the specs from your harness manufacturer as well as the GCR's of any sanctioning bodies. This is not an area where you want to be experimenting at your own potential peril...

Good pick-up. I'm not a big fan of the big gaping hole in the pan, so I'm either going to do reverse scallops or a series of round holes for air exit.

Since you mentioned a shield for the oil lines, have you thought about anything to protect the underside of the flares? Are you undercoating the underside of the flares to protect them? Someone mentioned this to me some time back that it was a good idea on flared fenders with no liners.

Not Real Sure, but....
I paid $8k, but got another Rust Free car & tons of parts. I sold the 2nd car & some parts, so I paid around $4k for the car
A lot of the Parts I had, then I bought another -6 (#1724) that came with most of the GT Parts. I sold #1724 for close to what I paid for the package and kept all the GT parts, so in a way they were Free.
I did have to buy the Replacement Panels, mostly from Restoration Design when Bill owned it - (he even made me a custom pieces) & Stoddard. Along the way I bought some things from badm & Mikey - probably $3k Total
The Rustoration work & Paint cost me $9k some of it in trade ( a couple of 914 Tubs & 911 Parts)
The most money I have in anything is the 2.8 Twin-Plug
The Back Story on the car - It has very, very low miles (under 17,000), it was originally owned by the owner of Autowerks in Rockford, IL . Then was owned by a Doctor in Rockford, who had 2 914-6s. They must have been left some place where the Passenger side stayed wet as that whole side was gone.
The Dr put it up for sale in Panorama in 1981 with 14,000 Miles - It did not sell at that time, but was later Sold.
In Feb 2000 it was put on eBay with less than 16,000 Miles - the High Bid was $9,999.95, I'm not sure if it Sold on Ebay
In Sept 2002, Brad Mayeur put it and the Dr's 2nd 914-6 ( Totally rusted out - no useable body parts) up for sale in Panorama $11,700
A Real DoucheBag about 45 minutes north of me bought it and drove the car from 914Limited to Florida (I'm surprized the car didn't break in half). He dis-mantled the car, bought a Rust-free 71 -4. He was either going to VIN swap the -6 numbers to the -4 or cut up the -4 to weld the pieces to the -6, which he did not have the talent to do.
In Feb 08, the car was put up for Sale on the Club & Pelican. URY & some others had already seen it and regarded it as a lost cause. bcheney had the guy send him some pictures and alerted me to it. I was at the time restoring a 74 Carrera RS. I went up to see the car, saw it was in sad shape, but also in my mind saw the potential it had. I also knew it had to rescued from the guy that was selling it ( you should have seen some of the Mazda RX7 abortions sitting around his barn). By the way he said I ruined the car when I put the NOS M-471 GT Flares on it.
I bought it, had it shipped directly to Strattons (yesterday was the 1st time it had ever been at my house !) & brought the 71 Tangerine to my house. The DB would never give the Title to the 71 and I sold it cheap) smg and I made 3 trips with his Jeep Cherokee & me in my car with small trailer and then one more trip with my friend John with his truck/trailer & my car/trailer.
I never thought it would take over 3 Years to get it back ( figured 6 months to a year). A lot has changed in the last 3 years, but I'm glad I have #673 and the direction it has taken.
T.C.

I'm not sure that Clone is the right word. Certainly it was not Originally a GT, but it is a Real Six (the next Serial # was a GT) and has the Correct Dealer M-471 GT Package, that was just installed much later than Porsche would have planned. There are no records for Dealer M-471 cars. The other Real GT parts just put it over the Top, Also has some parts from an IMSA car (not yours!

Seems like I read somewhere that any of the original 6's could have been made into a GT i.e. there was nothing special about them from Porsche. You seem to have put all the right stuff on there, so I don't see why that would not be a real GT, just not one made in the 70's. I am sure this line of thought will go no where, upset people for no good reason and resolve nothing, but what the heck. Maybe you could call it a late model GT? It would seem to me that a clone would be an original 4 converted no matter how many NOS parts were used.
Great build by the way and thanks for saving another one. It looks great!
My 2 cents

I thought to be a real GT only meant it had all the factory M471 parts on it.
I would think a clone would be a car that used after market parts.

Some people have drawn a line in the sand where they say that a Real GT has to be done by the Factory. However that would leave out a LOT of Period Raced 914-6s. The Original M-471 Dealer package did not include much besides the Flares, longer wheel studs, etc. The Dealer package was made in order to Homologate the GT into International Racing.
The same thing applies to 935s & 962s. Porsche could not keep up with Demand and authorized outside companies to make them. To me they are still are Real 935s & 962s

Posted by: FourBlades Apr 24 2011, 09:02 PM
You are right, it is far better than a clone.
For all intents and purposes it is a real 914-6 GT when you think how nearly
all of the others got put together by Porsche dealers or by private owners who
bought the M471 kits.
In any case, it will certainly be one of the finest 914s of any kind out there when
you are done putting it together.

please don't mix up the term "M471" with "sport kit"
M471 was an option like M285 (chrome bumpers) or M570 (center seat cusion)
you could order it with a new car from April 1971 on, so a M471 optioned car was factory built
what you guys seem to talk about is the "sport kit" (german term) - the factory wrote about 400 kits built to meet the homologation rules
some dealers and racing teams ordered these "sport kit" and built their own race cars; these "sport kits" could contain of various parts
in addition to these things there were "factory werks cars", built by the factory and used by the factory
next step the "factory cars", built by the factory and sold to customers that could afford them
from the MY'71 (very likely from April 71) on there was also the M491 option;
this was a factory built car with full race equipment (this was the succeeder of the "factory car")
@ T.C. - very nice car !!!

That is the 100 liter Endurance tank, which was put in cars for long races.
While it would be nice to have, the repros are around $5k and that would be about a years worth of gas

With the metal flares, you can tell the difference before they're installed. Once they are under paint and bodywork, they look the same. - Except maybe to a very trained eye.

Paul, dumb question, but how do you know the balsa reinforced decklids are the real deal? Are there tell tale signs? How about the flares too? How do you tell the repops from Auto Atlanta and the factory items?

Metal Flares are easy to tell the difference - before & after Paint. The Repro are a heavier gauge metal ( which is not a bad thing). I have been fooled before by an installed set as the metal is so thin, it flexes like a F/G Flare
The Lids you can tell by the dis-coloration of the Resin (or Termites
)

I've got a Good News/Bad News situation - When I brought my car back from the shop in Orlando & put it on the Lift, I found out he had not put the S/C Turbo front suspension ( Aluminum Carrier, Underbody SwayBar & special lower A-Arms) pieces on and instead put the original pieces ( with new Torsion Bars, Custom Bushings, etc) on. It took a couple of weeks for him the find the Turbo parts and I was going to re-do the suspension yesterday. However, the expensive brass bushings have to be pressed-on and I think I would tear them up trying to get them off. They were $$, I don't really want to buy another set, so I'm going to sell the Turbo stuff and find a good thru-body SwayBar to put in my car and keep the existing suspension as-is.
Posted by: jim dorociak Jun 5 2011, 10:14 AM
That under body sway bar was not as useful as a thru the body sway bar anyway, so you really did not loose that much. I would change the carrier out to the aluminum one as it is significantly lighter than the metal carrier. When I used the Turbo arms on my car, I cut off the sway bar mount and welded on the U tab to go with a thru the body sway bar. Looks great, and when they are at the stage yours is everything you put back on has significance and is one step closer to completion. Jim

Rod, not a lot of progress lately - It's Brutal Hot here in the Summer ( I'm getting A/C for the garage before next summer). Plus I was putting in long hours at my last job, (I left that job last month and just got a MUCH better one yesterday). I've been working on the Blue Steel-Top ( good practice for the GT ) which I should have done in a few weeks.
Then I will really get cranking on the GT ( you can see I have 99% of the Parts)

Not sure of Full GT Upgrades? It had most everything
X-Top is Cool
He didn't want my Cage (V-Brace)
Needed Belt attachments - it came with REPA Belts
Came with A-Pillar pieces
Came with the Mechanical Headlight raiser - Mikey & I bought a few from Mittle before the Group Buy
the Car ( like most -6s, didn't have Sway Bars & I was going to do something different)
I didn't have the nerve to cut the access hole ( even though I've done it a bunch of times)
Relay Board relocating pieces were there
Chassis Tweeks? It had Chassis reinforcement (Factory, Tangerine & Engman), New Bilsteins, Mono-Balls, Spherical Bearings, Big Springs & New bigger Torsion Bars.
Must be putting much bigger wheels & Tires
Straighten out Body Work & Repaint?
Oh well, everyone has to make their car their own.

TC, Remeber GT's are kinda a crap shoot, some had it all most didnt, just reporting whats been welded onto a freshly painted tub, I forgot they beefed up the motor mount too.
Tweeks, I meant it needed some mechanical force to square it up.
Tires and wheels will be here soon , I was told by the body shop.
Ill take some pics next time.

You can stick any air-cooled 6 Cylinder 911 Motor in without drivetrain Mods. However I believe 3.6s need engine bay Mods (Sir Andy can address that). And when you go above certain HP, the 901 Tranny won't like it - so a switch to a 915 will be necessary.
As far as what size motor - how much do you want to spend & how fast do you want you want to go.
There are a Ton of Threads relating to 6 Cylinder Conversions on this Forum. This Thread & Car was already a 914-6

Nope ...
Some things are easier, for example removing the torsion bars for the rear trunk lid will give you some extra space for the intake elbow and removing the (not needed anymore) relay board gives you extra room for other stuff on that side.
But basically, you can stuff a 3.6L in there without any mods or cutting.
