914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Van ?

Posted by: Korijo Feb 17 2004, 05:37 PM

Brad, Craig, or any father figure...

Is The Van™ being shipped ? Or driven ? It cant REALLY be a surprise.

We need to plan for my bro in law to pick up the Chevy Van.

Posted by: boxstr Feb 17 2004, 08:47 PM

Sorry Dave I haven't heard one way or another. Maybe Brad can be of some help on this.
Oh Bradley....
CCLIN????

Posted by: Brad Roberts Feb 17 2004, 08:52 PM

I'll leave here in it Friday morning (for JP's). I have it at HPH right now going over it and fixing the dash. I have a fellow club guy that will follow me in case anything happens along the way. We can ride back together in his car.

I think the CAT may be clogged. The plan is to put it on the scope tomorrow.

get a transport to get it in novato so brad doesn't have to put it on a trailer and haul it to I-5.

kevin

Posted by: Brad Roberts Feb 17 2004, 08:55 PM

I'm driving it north for JP's event. They can take it from there.

For some unknown reason, 93 Eurovans eat Cats...
There are several forums that Korjo should read through on that issue.

Try resstting all the codes if you can get the correct tool....could be in limp home mode...mine was for a year....it runs much better now laugh.gif

Posted by: Brad Roberts Feb 17 2004, 09:29 PM

It isnt showing any codes.. should it be showing a dash light of some sort ??

Brad-

Do you want a WA state trip permit ? I can FedEx it tomorrow.

Thank you very much, Brad pray.gif

Please send me anything you can. I still have a Texas license and I have talked myself out of 3-4 tickers now.. I dont need to be pulled over for plates and then busted for Texas license.

What time you want to leave Portland (assuming Sunday), 230p or 900p ? I'll buy a ticket when you know.

You could stay the night in Portland, we'll drop you off at PDX on Sunday confused24.gif .

have you scanned it for codes ?
don't forget, the VAG-COM is for Dave, and you did kinda promise us logo pictures...
(did we ship you stickers ? i'll overnight a couple if not ...)

r_towle brought up a good point about limp mode

Has the transmission been scanned for codes? If the tranny is in limp mode it will start off in third, that could explain the poor acceleration. The VAG-COM should do trannies...Rich H?

There is no light for tranny dtc's but usually the shift position indicator on the dash will let you know if your in limp mode by reversing the background/prnd321 display. Hard to describe if you don't know what it should look like.

if the transmission is diagnostics-capable, VAG-COM can scan it. it can scan the whole vehicle. i just don't know what a '93 is capable of. but if the computer can talk, VAG-COM will see it. and if it's just a matter of stored DTC's from its various adventures - reset them.

we've just posted a new version of the software that does some new stuff for new cars, but i don't think there any improvements to be had for the old stuff ...

Posted by: DNHunt Feb 18 2004, 08:47 AM

Brad

If it's not too much trouble and you're hauling parts can you stick in 4 of the widened steel wheels you mentioned for me? I'd sure appreciate it.

Thanks

Dave

How are you going to get pulled over when you will have an F.B.I. escort behind you cool_shades.gif

Posted by: Brad Roberts Feb 18 2004, 11:27 PM

Dave it looks like I have a person following me. We are locked in.

I will ask for gas money (or send a common gas card for Oregon.)

RichH.. no stickers. I did scan it and it will go with me (it is currently in the van).

You'll need to overnight them so I get them Friday morning at the shop.

B

Posted by: Brad Roberts Feb 18 2004, 11:30 PM

The van tries to pull nicely. It acts like a set of trigger points going out. Under load it bucks lightly like it is trying. Right now it just DIES when it sees any kind of grade. It drops speed like I pulled a parachute. The tranny has very firm upshifts from 1-2 and 3-4. It actually hits 4th pretty hard.

Catalytic converter is PLUGGED up. It gets replaced tomorrow morning at 8am.

I had someone who works on them drive it... he said it had HALF the power it should have.

B

Posted by: tesserra Feb 19 2004, 11:19 PM

Brad,
I have had low power problems with FI cars when the fuel filter was clogged/old.
They are cheap and might help after the cat has been changed.
Just a thought.

George

Posted by: Korijo Feb 20 2004, 12:05 AM

I saw that the trip permit made it.

Is the cat the last issue ? Or, is the gauge still a headbang.gif

Posted by: Rob Ways Feb 20 2004, 12:20 AM

Saw the van earlier.... I was surprised it hasn't made it to its destination yet. Its like the Odyssey. Geez.

Posted by: Korijo Feb 20 2004, 01:18 AM

how should we give you gas money ? paypal ?

Dave is going to JP's on Friday so I'll bring the couple I have to stick on the van. Hopefully I get lots of pics to post.

Just sent the $$$.

Thank you very much, Brad...

Posted by: reverie Feb 20 2004, 02:14 PM

The arrival of the van may be kinda emotional.

We all might need a Costco box of kleenexes, JP. smile.gif

Posted by: Brad Roberts Feb 20 2004, 03:27 PM

Picked it up from the muffler shop.. runs a little better, but not much. I still think the cam timing is off even though it shows no codes. Everything I read says that if the timing is off it will throw a code.. but nada.

B

Posted by: Brad Roberts Feb 20 2004, 06:32 PM

FIXED. The timing was WAY The F off... I knew it felt like the cam timing was off or the ignition timing.

We are leaving for Wash. NOW. JP.. if you read this we need directions.

It runs great and spounds great.. almost brought a tear to my eye..

See you next weekend.

I wish I could see the van drive off on its way to its final destination. Since I cannot, I will drink a beer in honor of the "Van" saga, in honor of all those who put money towards the purchase, in honor of Brad Roberts for putting his time and efforts in, and in honor of Dave and his family who will finally be able to take advantage of the mobility (aka, dragging Dave's heavy ass wheel chair!)

Cheers all beer.gif

I am new to this club, and have read through threads about the VAN. It is a great thing you guys did and are doing for everyone. If someone can give me a e-mail address for paypal to give to the "gas fund", I would be honored to help a little.

For the VAN fund look at the top of the every page where it says PayPal Donate. Click on that to donate.

This VAN thing has turned into the wildest epic I have ever seen on the internet and we are sooo close to giving it to Dave and Kori. I will cry I bet when they get it at JP's.
All the people who have helped Brad, RichS, ChrisReale, Karl, etc you done well!

Thanks A lot!!

Posted by: Brad Roberts Feb 20 2004, 08:50 PM

Thanks everyone.. I'm home now packing. .we will leave in a few minutes.

JP.. try my cell in about 1 hour. I should be on Hwy 5 by then.

I have 2 other people with me.. Lyressa and Varik.

Traffic getting home was "eventful"

The van runs GREAT !! It pulls like a small freight train from 3k up. One of the guy's who helped me figure it all out said "that Flowmaster really woke up this stock van" He drives them 2-3 times a week and owns shop near HPH. Typically the vans have 2 mufflers and a CAT.

B

Posted by: Qarl Feb 20 2004, 09:13 PM

Thanks for fixing everything.

mmm.... flowmaster.....

My Gaawd.......Mrs Brad is coming???

I better call & cancel the bus load of sluts. I can take the loss....I got the grope rate.....they was cheep sluts. Gud enuff for 914 wankers.

I got up from a nap (old farts sleep on their days off wurk) & saw this. Been trying to get thru on Brads cell, but he's prolly in the mountains bout now.....

The suspense is killing me. We're going to see a river of tears soon. aktion035.gif This is going to be the start of a wonderful year. smilie_rolli_1.gif driving-girl.gif Enjoy you two. You deserve the best.

Posted by: Rich Bontempi Feb 21 2004, 02:21 AM

After we replaced the cat and installed a flowmaster, the van ran better, but after the timing was set right , brad had a smile from ear to ear when the van ran great!

Posted by: jonwatts Feb 21 2004, 02:51 AM

I'm really happy to hear that. After all the drama of getting the engine replaced just to hear it couldn't get out of its own way was disheartening. Hopefully whatever grudge that van had with california it will leave at the state border.

Posted by: Eric Taylor Feb 21 2004, 03:02 AM

Damit I wish I could go tomorow. It's ironic, because I really don't want to be where I have to tomorrow, but you do these thing's for your family. I would love to see the van get handed over and end this saga. I know there will be plenty of tears tomorrow watching dave drive that sob away:). There better be a LOT of pic's tomorrow.
Eric

P.S.
I'm missing Mrs. Brad too! Dam, she's suppost to be kinda hot wub.gif

Posted by: J P Stein Feb 21 2004, 08:55 AM

We just got a call.....bout 6:15. They are in town....but short of sleep. When I talked to Brad last night, the van was running strong.
