914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Group buy: Porterfield R4-S (and others) brake pads

Posted by: Phoenix 914-6GT Jan 9 2009, 07:42 PM

Okay. This is a feeler to even see if this will be doable. I have a connection that will be finding out numbers for us. They should be able to get the pads at a great price and be able to get sets for whatever caliper you have. I just want to know if you are interested beerchug.gif .

Posted by: sww914 Jan 9 2009, 08:36 PM

Do they have to be R4S's? is just R4's OK?

Posted by: iamchappy Jan 9 2009, 08:52 PM

What if you've already got them, can i get a rebate!

Posted by: Phoenix 914-6GT Jan 9 2009, 09:33 PM

I will check to see about different kinds of Porterfields. I believe yes but let me check.

No Chappy... but you can get another set beerchug.gif

Posted by: jim_hoyland Jan 9 2009, 09:51 PM

I'm interested; since I live near Porterfields, I can pick mine up there. Been doing business with them for several years.

Posted by: Thoward914 Jan 9 2009, 10:34 PM

Yes, I'm definitely interested. I plan on replacing my current brake pads with some Porterfield R4S's for the upcoming A/X season. I want one of these smilie_pokal.gif

Posted by: Phoenix 914-6GT Jan 9 2009, 10:53 PM

If you guys could let me know if you want front, rear, or both. beerchug.gif

Posted by: Travis Neff Jan 10 2009, 12:46 AM

I am interested in the R4S F & R 1973 4 lug

Posted by: Todd Enlund Jan 10 2009, 12:59 AM

I might be interested... but I'm still not even sure what brakes I'll be using! I've got the stock brakes, and I have a pair of 1989 911 fronts, but the guy I bought them from stiffed me on the struts.

Posted by: Phoenix 914-6GT Jan 10 2009, 01:06 AM

Well, you have time to figure this out as it may be mid next week before I get to the official thread for those ordering. I just need to see how many I can get. If enough we can do it but if not this is dead sad.gif I will be pushing this hard though as they will be around half of what Pagids are and the guy we will be going through is going to benefit us teeners pricewise so that anyone looking for great pads should not pass this up. Was that a run on sentence? biggrin.gif

I have 911 M calipers on all four corners and am interested in this group buy.

Posted by: dflesburg Jan 10 2009, 06:27 AM

I have 87 Carrera front and 84 SC rear calipers...

Posted by: 7275914911 Jan 10 2009, 07:49 AM

I would be interested...

'A' front and 'M' rear...

Posted by: bam914 Jan 10 2009, 08:10 AM

I am interested in a set of R4's front and rear for a '73.

Posted by: FourBlades Jan 10 2009, 11:18 AM

I'd be interested in at least one set front and rear for M calipers.

I may also need a set for the IMSA car...

John

Posted by: Gint Jan 10 2009, 12:16 PM

I'd go for a full set of R4S (street) for a 914/6, front and rear.

I've never tried the street pads. The race units work great on the street without warmup, but they dust a *lot* and squeal like pigs and scare the soccer moms. We've had lots of discussions about the subject.

Some interesting reading just for the hell of it... http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?act=Search&CODE=show&searchid=2170cda1b793a365a230dab757427429&search_in=posts&result_type=topics&highlite=%2B%2Bporterfield+%2Brace%2A+%2Bstreet

Hey Jon, Your title? RS4... R4S?

Posted by: Phoenix 914-6GT Jan 10 2009, 01:19 PM

Ummm well, yeah blink.gif

Posted by: SLKWrx Jan 10 2009, 01:33 PM

Definitely would be in for a set.

Posted by: slow914 Jan 10 2009, 02:11 PM

yeah, Im in for BMW 77 323i fronts and stock 71 rears, thanks for getting this together

Posted by: Phoenix 914-6GT Jan 10 2009, 02:32 PM

Well we don't yet have it together. We need many more but I am sure once we have pricing figured and all we will have many more jump in. So far it looks as though we have about 20 to 28 sets of pads. Need about double that to be serious about this.

Posted by: RoadGlue Jan 10 2009, 02:47 PM

I'd be interested in another set of the straight R4 pads. I've been running them on my street/auto-x car for a few years now and they need zero heat-up time to be effective. I've heard, and correct me if I'm wrong, that the R4-S pads have a shorter life and there have been reports of the pad material "crumbling".

Word,

Posted by: Thoward914 Jan 10 2009, 04:09 PM

I need front and rear pads for a stock 74 914. Also if this is for other models, I'll need front and rear for a 86 944. Maybe even the 911, but I have Hawks on the 911 and will probable wait until they need to be replaced.... Depending on price. Now I need to find a great price on rotors.

Posted by: Phoenix 914-6GT Jan 10 2009, 05:16 PM

I believe we can do this for any and all types of Porterfields for any and all types of calipers. I will let everyone know once we have everything figured out. Still making sure we can do this. I will also look into the r4s crumbling thing. If that be the case the R4 is what I am sure we all want.

Not yet.. I have had them out a few times doing various projects and they look fine right now. That being said I bet I have only 3000 miles or so on them.

I'd be interested in R4S pads front & rear for stock '74 calipers.

Posted by: NORD Jan 11 2009, 12:06 AM

Jon

I'LL be needing a set very soon, I've got BMW fronts and 914 rears,

Get sorted out with price and available when date and let me know.

Posted by: AgPete139 Jan 11 2009, 01:58 AM

If everything gets settled, I may be in for a full set of R4S for M calipers.

Pete

Posted by: zig-n-zag Jan 11 2009, 03:22 AM

I'm in. Front calipers are 911 S alloys and rears are 914/4. Yes, R4S's.

Posted by: ArtechnikA Jan 11 2009, 06:23 AM

The Porsche Support Vehicle Titan needs brakes but Porterfield only seems to make rear pads for that application... Looks like I'll need to stay with Hawk for that...

Posted by: Phoenix 914-6GT Jan 11 2009, 07:05 PM

We are getting closer but still need more before I can even look into the details. Need a few more guys beerchug.gif

Posted by: maf914 Jan 12 2009, 12:17 PM

Is the R4S compound good for the street? Or just for competition? Noisy or dusty? I would be interested if they were street pads.

Posted by: RoadGlue Jan 12 2009, 12:24 PM

The "S" in R4-S stands for "Street".

The R4 (without the S) pads that I use on my daily driver are a bit dusty and squeak a bit, but are otherwise fantastic.

Posted by: Phoenix 914-6GT Jan 12 2009, 12:26 PM

They are great pads fore the street but I do believe they are a little noisey.

Posted by: SLITS Jan 12 2009, 12:56 PM

Jon, if I can afford them definitely one set for "S" calipers and possbily another for BMW calipers.

Posted by: jcd914 Jan 12 2009, 01:03 PM

When this comes together I'm in for 2 sets (R4).
Not sure what calipers I will have, currently I have 3" 911 calipers in front and stock 914/4 rears but since I discovered I have almost all the parts to convert to rear 911 E-brakes, I am considering bumping the rears to original 914/4 fronts.

Jim

Sounds good Ron.

Jim, sounds like you need to get three sets then biggrin.gif

If they are less than $100 per set of 4 for front and rear then +1 for a full set
Otherwise, I would be interested in rear R4s set to match the front set I have now
stock 1972 calipers all around
If the price is right, more for the shelf would be great. I hope to race lots in 2009 beerchug.gif

Posted by: George H. Jan 19 2009, 12:49 AM

add me to the list for a complete set for a /4

Posted by: RoadGlue Jan 19 2009, 12:56 AM

So any word on what the price will be a for a full set of the R4 pads, F&R for a stock '74? What about the time line? There seems to be a lot of interest, but it's vaporware until there's an ETA and price. Not hassling anyone, but how long do we need to wait for this info? We've seen a number of group buys work out here at the World, but there have been a few others that seemed to never get off the ground (sometimes for a year+ of talk).

Thanks for putting this together!

I am good for a f and r set but I'm not sure what calipers I have or am going to use. I think I have m on the front and will use the 914 front on the rear but I also have some rear 911 calipers I could use on the rear. I do have new vented rotors for the rear so Instead of making the 914 caliper wider it might be simpler to just use a 911 rear caliper.

For further edification…

We can get the R4, R4-1 and R4-E pads on this buy as well. PM for details:

R-4 Full Race Compound – Designed specifically for heavy-duty motorsports. The carbon based semi-metallic R-4 materials allow the pad to absorb tremendous amounts of heat and dissipate it at very even rate. Carbon Kevlar material warms up to race temperature quickly, which is quite helpful during restarts, and when track time is limited. When used with cast iron and steel alloy rotors, the R-4 compound requires minimal bed-in period. Throughout the entire heat range, the carbon kevlar material will give extremely consistent modulation and predictably. This is truly the most rotor friendly racing brake pad material ever. Good for road courses, oval track, rally, vintage racing, autocross, club events or professional racing events.

R4-1 Vintage Full Race Compound – Developed using knowledge testing in the vintage racing community. Optimum uses for the R4-1, under conditions where very high friction is needed with minimal warm up time and in applications where there is difficulty in maintaining sufficient heat with conventional race pad compounds. Widely used on vintage GT and formula cars the R4-1 is also gaining popularity in off-road and rally-cross classes. Great modulation, consistent pedal feedback and rotor friendly at all temperatures as with all the other Porterfield Carbon Kevlar compounds.

R4-E Endurance Race Compound – A carbon kevlar compound made to last a bit longer than the original R-4 compound. The R4-E compound is designed to endure higher prolonged temperature and still has pad life as long or longer than Porterfield R-4 do. This pad is great for club enduro events and applications where temperatures are at their maximum.

For those still fence sitting and wondering about the R4-S:

R4-S High Performance Street Brake Pads - For high performance and heavy duty street conditions the Porterfield R4-S compound remains a top performer in the realm of street/performance brake pads. With the R4-S compound giving a friction level up to .41. This is an amazingly fast stopping brake pad. Simply put, they will give you an impressive increase in stopping ability with very minimum amount of pedal effort. Perfect for prolonged everyday street driving while also being capable of enduring the most severe use without fade. It is also rotor friendly of course. We have gone to great measures to ensure that the R4-S compound has the absolute lowest noise and dust levels possible, far below O.E.M. equipment or any other high performance brake material. The R4-S compound which has an overall win in the Baja 1000 is available for most models of cars, trucks, and SUV’s. Superb stopping power under heavy use. Great for occasional autocrossing, solo events, off road events and rallies. Perhaps one of the overall best performing, clean and quiet everyday high performance driving brake pad ever made. The R4-S compound is available for virtually any vehicle sold in the U.S. Also for rare vintage cars and special applications for street touring.

I can have all the guys that want to pick them up at my house have their pads shipped here if you want. Eric will have to see if there is a shipping difference though. I am sure it would save some but maybe not all. Just let Eric know what you are wanting to do and he will take care of you. Thanks Nord. beerchug.gif

I've had a couple of PM exchanges with Eric on this but I haven't got the secret-handshake PM with the link and I don't see myself in either list...

Could be because he's still researching availability, which is cool, but - Yo Eric - what's happening? I can pull the trigger Thursday night or Friday morning.

Thanks. (Since my choices are a bit off-the-page a PM response will be fine...)

I'm out.
I just ran the numbers for the remainder of january after the flooding adjustments. Though the price for the brakes is great (and maybe doable after Insurance pays out) there is no way that I could justify spending the money right now. Too much out of pocket $$, waiting and hoping for reimbursment later.

Guys... this is being pulled today at 6:00 PST. Please use the provided link to purchase or give us the courtesy of a reply like Zach did (thanks Zach). I'm sensative about leaving anyone out who has expressed interest in the buy but we have to close it out and get the order in so those who have paid don't have their loot tied up needlessly.

These are the best thing you can do to your brake system to make it ROCK. I think back on how many threads that have the words "914 brakes" and "upgrade" in them. Take the least expensive, most effective route.

PM if you have any questions or need help. Thanks,

E.

Small pricing issue. Their site is fairly clunky for specifics.

Yes, we got the number we needed. It should be a matter of time before they all get out.

Actually lost money on the deal. There goes that big vacation to the bahamas! biggrin.gif mad.gif

Most of them arrived yesterday but, they BO'd almost all of the AP30's (rear pads) and the AP31T's (fronts for later model 914's). We literally drained their shelf stock with this buy.

Throughout the week I'll be shipping the complete orders that I can, the rest will ship when I can complete them. I believe they said 7-10 days. I'll have another conversation with them on Monday to follow up on the 30's and the 31T's. What I can ship will be on a first in first out basis.

Everything that can ship has/will ship Monday.

The packing box shipment didn't arrive on time so I had to break down the Porterfield boxes and ship them in the thinner Flat Rate boxes.

We're still waiting on the second 1/2 of the shipment which includes the bulk of the AP30 (914 rears) and the AP31T (late 914 fronts). There's a few odds and ends as well but, everything should be in by the end of this week. Hoping.

Richard, yours shipped in this batch.

Thanks for your concern. I'll eat this, over the long run it will be fine. All issues I should have caught:

PayPal Fees
Shipping Increase ($9.30 to $9.85)
Different Discount Structure on R4 vs. R4-S (odd)

I was cutting the margins tight because I wanted to give everyone a great introductory offer for these pads. You're going to love them.

Enjoy you pads and please use (and abuse) your brakes often. biggrin.gif

You can recoup some of that by doing a bit of regional shipping. Anyone who lives in Sacramento can be shipped to me and be picked up at the Sacramento Porsche Family Reunion event or by other arrangement. Dupree for instance doesn't have a running car. He was going to get in on this, if he did he lives just a few blocks away.

Dude - I hope you are not swallowing on behalf those like me that were "interested and motivated" but then balanced the checkbook and couldn't find cash for extra parts to sit on the shelf. I will gladly place an order if it makes a difference, but i think the issue seems to be shooting for a 5% margin and then the unpredicted and unknown nickels and dimes erased that 5%.
Like Dave D says - we're ready to step up to make this a break-even or better experience. Thanks for all your hard work beerchug.gif

Posted by: Eric_Shea Feb 4 2009, 09:48 PM

Jeff brings up a good point. With these pads "all" of the 914 and 914-6 backing plates will need to be drilled. This is fairly common with racing pads.

The fat pins on a 914 are 8.5mm. A 3/8" bit would probably be the safest bet from a common bit set. 5/16 is too small.

It's not rocket science but; you should know a few tips:

Mount the pads in a vise or clamp them onto a block of wood or to your drill press table before drilling. Do not attempt to hold them in your hand. The bit will bite the metal and spin the pad in your hand causing you to say all sorts of nasty things.

Pay attention as to how you drill them as well. I face the pads together and drill one side left and one side right. Look at your calipers and take notes or make a simple drawing. Use the old "measure twice, cut once" philosophy.

I have yet to figure out why ATE made these calipers with one big pin and one normal pin. The later Ferrari calipers had 1 size pin throughout.

My normal boxes arrived today so... no tearing down boxes on the second shipment. Still waiting for word on round two. I'll keep you posted.

Because long ago in a far away land the Porsche Engineers Superior to the Ferrari dudes, had a .20-.030 thou. taper sanded into the pad, the one larger hole made installation a no brainer.

flawed perhaps as all late pads have same size holes, But who am I to question the 70's, why ? because they aktion035.gif (rock ?)

"Taper wear". Or rather, compensating for it. The leading edge (I think, could have it backwards) will tend to wear more. If the pad is made unevenly, the wear tends to even out.

Update:

Randy, I goofed on yours and ordered regular AP31's vs. 31T (thicker) for your fronts. 31T's are still back ordered so I doubt it would have mattered.

The rest of you hoodlums; we kinda suprised them with 100+ brake pads, especially the 31T's. Allow me:

Early 914's, 911's and 914-6 take the #31 pad size. Later 914's (only) take a thicker 31T up front. We had a flood of later 31T pads on order and this is what Porterfield is currently out of stock on. They're shipping more AP30's (rear pads) today but we're still one week out on the AP31T's.

I'll try to have an update on 31T's next Monday (from my ocean front villa in the Bahama's) wink.gif

No worries... just to make it clear:

If you have a late model 914 (72.8 - 76) your are probably on B/O (front AP31T pad sets). We're hoping they ship out "to us" next week.

If you have BMW fronts, we have about 3-4 of those orders being held up for rear pads. They should have shipped the AP30 rear pads early this week and we expect them any day now.

Once the rears come in we'll send out the 3-4 BMW/914 orders and stage the rest for delivery once the late model fronts arrive.

I know you love these "where are MINE?!!" messages, I didn't want you to think that I didn't care enough to offer one up from Oregon...

***update***

I called yesterday for an update (as I was fully expecting to see the AP31T's Thursday if they truly did ship them Tuesday) and I was told they didn't know and I would have to call back Monday (even thought I heard her asking the guy in charge of shipping in the background).

Which means to me... they've yet to ship the AP31T's. mad.gif

Basically; a full 1/2 of the orders are waiting on these late model 914 front pads. Sorry for the delay.

Update on Monday.

Shhhh.... He is still sleeping. drunk.gif Seriously, if I know Eric he has the boxes all ready to go and they would ship they moment he sees them. So your update is that they are still on BO from Porterfield. Patience young Jedi!

Posted by: Eric_Shea Feb 26 2009, 05:23 PM

Called Porterfield on Tuesday and they stated the mold for the AP31T's needed to be remanufactured. They are now saying 3 more weeks.

Sorry for the delay in posting as I just returned from Boston last night.

You are correct; I have 15 boxes lined up and ready to go, we're just waiting on the AP31T's (late model 914 fronts). I'm anxious to get this behind me.

Eric -- Any update on when the late model pads are going to ship?

I think Eric might be ummm... remote right now. Otherwise I would have been banned for sure. huh.gif But I can tell you that it has been one week and one day since he said three weeks. So I would expect he might get them around the 19th of March. Given the margin involved it would maim Eric for sure if he shipped partial shipments so please be patient. They will get to you eventually. flag.gif

Boxes and invoices are sitting ready for AP31T's in R4-S compound.

Assume all orders will ship in full this week.

Thanks,

I called yesterday to get confirmation that they shipped on Monday (after not seeing the credit card charge go through) and she said she had good news. They're shipping tomorrow (which is today).

Eric,

I couldn't wait any longer to replace my front pads, our first AX of the season was last weekend. So I had to run down to Zims and pick up a set, nothing comparable to the Porterfields, but they were better than what I had on the car. I saw you shipped out the rest of my stuff today, thanks. Here's a picture of the pads I took off. huh.gif
