914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Anybody got some HP Harddrives for the new Server?

Posted by: SirAndy Jan 12 2009, 04:05 PM

So, i finally picked up the new server today.

HP DL 380 with 2 x 2.8GHz Dual CPUs and 4GB of RAM ...

It got one 146.8 GB Harddrive but i really would like to run either 2 or 4 of them using Raid 1 ...

So, if anyone has some HP 146.8 GB Hot Swappable Harddrives handy, please let me know!

HP / 146.8GB / 10K / Ultra-320 / SCSI

I would, i guess. But i hate paypal, so it would have to be snail mail ...

Or maybe someone else wouldn't mind using his/her paypal.

If everyone threw in a few bucks, it could happen. These drives are ~$500 each.

I don't have computer parts but I am willing to donate some paypal bucks if it helps keep this site on line.

the carrier is the hard part to get. you should be able to drop what ever drive you want into it.
Raid 1 good.
Good job Andy!

Not really. Hot swappable drives don't have a connector for the power supply. They only have one slim connector for everything, data and power.
They also have a square "frame" around the drive that makes them slide into the carrier.

I am amazed that someone happened to have such a specialty piece of hardware available. Wow.

Andy,

Are you planning on making this a virtual server? What OS are you running currently?

Posted by: Shade Tree Jan 13 2009, 12:58 PM

I couldn't see in the pic if they are scsi or serial ATA. I have some at my office.

Nope.
Currently, we run on an ancient Windows NT 4.0 (!) ...

I have the choice of either:

- Windows 2000 Advanced Server
- Windows 2003 Advanced Server

unless someone has a copy of MS Server 2005 collecting dust that they want to donate ...

Ironically I have a pair of those that I harvested from a decommissioned server sitting here on my bench. How many slots in a DL380 bay? You want these in addition to the ones Gint has? Yours for the asking.

Six slots ...

I have one HD, Gint has three, so that leaves two empty slots.

Andy, PM me your shipping address and I'll get them boxed up. Now you can see if you can find a decent OS!

Posted by: KaptKaos Jan 14 2009, 12:32 AM

I believe you need Win2k3 Enterprise x64 to handle more RAM. I'll confirm and get back to you. I "think" I can hook you up with that. I need to see.

Posted by: RJMII Jan 14 2009, 03:19 AM

some 32 bit environments can handle more RAM with AWE enabled.

quick link for RAM in OS.
