can't beat 1500 for a 914 driver. Don't plan on restoring it though. A front clip replacement is quite a major collision repair and I have NEVER seen one done perfectly.

Not sure about this one but...
There is a 914 on 10th between El Camino and Live Oak in Arcadia (2829 10th Ave). Its been siting for a long time. I've been meaning to stop and ring the bell to see if they wanted to sell but just haven't had the time. Looks to have 5 lug conversion w/Fuchs and fiberglass bumpers. Looks to be in your neighborhood so might be worth a stop to check, who knows?
EDIT* Nahh, link doesn't take you to the address. Punch it in and use the streetview to get an idea.

Hi, thanks for the advise , I plan on putting alot of miles on the car so yes it's gonna be a driver .
Is a front clip replacement going to affect the car's handling , structure integrety , and or is it
just a looks and gap's kind of a thing.
Because I'd noticed the hood gaps are not good !
It is primer , Would i be wasting money on getting it a paint job too. ?

I'd keep looking! Front clip replacement can be okay but for a crappy driver probably. I would keep looking for something in better shape. I wouldn't pay more than $700 for a car like that. Unless it had a drivetrain in excellent shape & was a 2.0 . Always better off finding something a little further along. I'd hate to pay to paint a car like that.
Not to be to hard on that car imparticlar. For your 1st 914 I'd start off with a much better car. They can be found in the $1500 range in better shape

Yes and yes ...
The *only* way to do this right is to put the car on a celette bench and weld in the new clip on the bench.
A few bodyshops have a celette bench but there's only one place on the whole west coast who rents the fixtures for the 914 and they're expensive.
If the front clip wasn't done right, at best the car will never align quite right, at worst ...
I would pass.

The car is a 1.7 and the drive train is far from excellent shape.
I've seen other 914's that were pretty nice in the 5-6k range . is that about normal ,
one was a 1-8 the other a 2-0
are there cars in between , new front clip car and 5-6 k cars ?

The economy is bad and getting worse. So if you have the ability to be patient, you might just find a really good deal in the next few months.
Time and time again we have seeen where a little patience and saying "no" to a deal works out for the best soon after.

I've had my 914 for several years now and have recently completed my restoration. My front clip has been replaced and I have had no issues at all. Biggest problem I anticipate is when I try to sell! Paid about the same and current have about $5k+ into it! Want to Autocross this Summer - that may expose some structural integrity isssues?

Sam, I would wait, keep looking and learning about what you will get for your money. $1500 theses days gets you a good parts car. $2500 gets you a driver/fixer, $3500 gets you a good driver, needs paint and interior work,$4500 get s you a nice driver needs paint or interior work,$5500 gets you a very nice driver with a few extras, and so it goes.
As always, go and look at the car, or contact someone here to look at it for you, if it is to far away.
You will be much happier in the end.

Hey Sam,
Look around. There are plenty that will come up for sale. You should be able to find a decent driver for 3k. Not a perfect car 4 that but a very solid one. Much better than the one showed above. Just keep your eye on Craigslist. You'll find one quick

Sam I come from Monrovia and my son said that there is a nice 914 by grand and foothill check that one out also its Kelly green.

I would suggest if you want to purchase the car, have someone from this board or 914club go with you and inspect. Unless you are familiar with these cars you might not notice something glaring at you.

all those estimate's sound right on , I'm not sure what direction i should go in
, i'll be using the car for freeway commute only , and will most likely want to replace the motor only.
so i can get the most reliable setup . what motor would you recommend , and does it matter what car i buy , if i'm going to switch the engine . as far as it being a 2 lit, 1-8 or 1-7
1-7 1-8 2-0 , fuel inj. or carb's . if i want to not drive the car hard at all . just have a reliable free way cruiser . ?

Hi , I've seen the kelly green car . It is 10k. it says and appears to be fully restored to stock . 2liter fi. very nice paint job. new tire's , very good interior . But That 's a little more than i want to spend . I haven't seen the car for a while , someone may have bought it.
I like'd it but i'm going to be putting to many miles on the car to get one that nice.
I looked at a 73 1-8. that was really nice in sfvalley . it was 6 k . like a year ago.
I'll keep you posted if i see anything around the neighborhood

Most of the time you get what you pay for. There will always be steals and deals (although getting more rare). From my experience, the less you pay on the front end, the more you pay in the long run. Get the best, most solid car you can afford. If I was paying someone to find a car, serious accident history would be on the NO column.
Posted by: vesnyder Feb 3 2009, 06:25 PM
I drove it for about a year for the $1,500 car. Then invested about a grand on the paint. Invested another grand on the interior and suspension. Over the last year I rebuilt the motor for about $2k+. That's $5,500 if my math is correct, but never been a strong point of mine. Could get $4k if I was lucky. Not a bad investment in this economy - would be worth about $3k if I put it in the market. This car is a hell of a lot more fun!

I would rather find a dead in the water straight car then one that has been busted. Its always cheaper to make one run right then to try to straighten out the body ... by a long shot.

Basketcase cars are exactly that - and you never know what else might be lurking.
As others have said, better to get a good tub with a bad motor than a runner that has been cobbled together.

I've seen lots of super solid cars , tubs and motors for between 5.500 , 10k but i'm going to try to go look at this car it's close to my area for ?
73 porsche 914 new weber carbs 911 rims and brakes....
The add is very vague which concerns me , seller is asking for 6900 $
So i'm not sure what to expect when i actually see the car but i'm not sure if 7k is my exact budget either. unless it's really a nice nice car and setup . not all cut up i'm won't even consider it really ?
What do you think, And can you tell if it's flared fenders or not , i'm not really wanting flares. either ?????????????
and how do i get everyone to comment on this car . Do i have to post an new thread or will people get it from this ?
pict's would not add here is link :

Not flared
Repaint - looks like a nice job in the pics
Mirrors not OE for a 914
LE Replica front spoiler
"Italian" front lenses
Euro yellow fog light lenses
Euro tail light lenses
Can't tell how 5 lug conversionwas done
That's about all you can tell from the pictures .................
