914World.com _ 914World Garage _ how much does a good head job cost?

Posted by: dflesburg Feb 18 2009, 12:44 PM

Len didnt respond to my email and now he is closed this week.

What would a typical refurb cost on 2.0 heads?

Posted by: Sleepin Feb 18 2009, 12:47 PM

I just had Al at AJRS redo the heads on the 2.0.....$750 using used (in spec)valves.

edit: That was flycutting, drilling and installing insert on one plug thread, new guides, two used valves, checking springs and valves for tolerances, and bead blasting.

Your thread heading reminds me of a joke...

I have heard of heads being refreshed for as little as $500 and up to $1000

Still young so only a few things with diamonds in them.

I will however pay out the ass for a good head job. biggrin.gif

Posted by: blitZ Feb 18 2009, 01:34 PM

Len did mine a few years ago. New springs, valves, retainers, guides, flycut, etc. Seems like it was $800 or so. Worth it knowing it was done right.

I just remember the punchline being that in the right (or wrong depending on your point of view) neighborhood a good head job can cost as little as a swig off your whiskey flask...

Depends on the "service provider" and the extras.....

Posted by: PanelBilly Feb 18 2009, 04:25 PM

The head job is cheep, its the f**king lawyer's invoices that will cost you.

Posted by: dflesburg Feb 18 2009, 05:02 PM

I think we are completely off topic....

We are talking about getting our cylinder heads refurbished.

Posted by: sww914 Feb 18 2009, 05:15 PM

Up to $1500.00 if they're cracked, and speaking of crack, as little as $10.00 some places. A disgusting fat old man neighbor told me that the going rate in Bakersfield is a can of gold spraypaint. OOOHHH yuck!

there is no set price because...
what do your cores look like?
a basic valve job assumes your valves are re-grindable, studs are good, no bad threads, valve seats are good.
new valves are 20 bucks each(+-)
welding is charged per crack
new seats plus teh cost to install them

virgin, non cracked non fly-cut to death head cores are RARE!!!

expect to pay at least $1000 a pair

Posted by: sean_v8_914 Feb 19 2009, 02:09 PM

springs?
valve guides?
$$$

Not a California thing. You aren't that far from Over the Rhine, although I suppose whiskey might not be the preferred payment method.
