I've been looking for a 914 driver for quite awhile , and have stumbled over 912's in the process that look like good deals and i'm curious if they would be better suited for me.


914 pro 's con's / 912 pro's con's : 914-mid engine +


914 con , it's kind of small and i'm 6-2 with long legs and arms , big feet

will the 912 be better space wise and what is everyone's read on the

912 in general ??? Rust , what else ???

i've seen 912's for big money and not so big . and compared with 914-4's{ only} i've seen some 914 's that are nice for 10 to 6 grand . So money wise what's goes on with 912's - are 912's under 10 K . a good buy or really dangerous money pit?

1969 Porsche 912, runs and drives great.
Paint has a great shine, not rusty like most old Porsche's.

Has a 5 speed that shifts smoothly, Recaro seats and 15" Fuchs wheels.

912 Cons:

Same rust issues as any Porsche built prior to 1976
Engine is as costly to rebuild as a flat 6
Can't beat itself across an intersection (It's a 911 with no power).

912 Pros:

You can almost qualify for the pinky lifter, gold chain, whine and cheese crowd.
You get 5 lug Fuchs.

I'll take the 914 first

ok so rust is same issue ,


engine cost: I though it use's same type _4 as the 914 ???

so what are the engine difference's beside's placement ???

I'm not going for speed so that's not really a concern for me , i'm more of a cruiser

I don't do all the pinky lifter / gold chain / whine or cheese thing. but I do like 5 lug fuch's .

And what about my height is the 912 better for bigger person ???

Find a nice 2 liter 914 with 5 lug fuchs.

You mentioned worrying about fitting into a 914 because of your height and shoe size- I'm 6'2 with size 12 shoe (Please, single file, ladies. w00t.gif happy11.gif ) and I fit in my 914 just fine. In fact I have to move the seat forward one notch.

There's also plenty of space for a bigger engine than either the 914 or the 912 came with and it goes in the correct location. Score another point for the 914. beer.gif

that's good to hear , because i want to get a 914 but don't want to be squeezed in

and size 14's are what i'm wearing , but i've got good footwork .

more pete newell then heal toe-n-ing it .


so , something w/ a 2-0 , 5 lug's and no rust , what am i looking at price wise with all that stuff .

how big of motor can you go ,

using pump gas , for the street , using a 2-0 case as a staring point. Reliably

my 914 has more room for the driver and passenger than my 83 911 sunroof coupe..alot more ,914's are decievingly roomy ..im not sure about the size 14 shoe...im a 9 1/2 and its tight down there for me even with slim shoes on..it takes some getting used too.i dont thing you will be able to have a center console becuase of your large shoe size:beer2:

My Uncle bought a teener in 1970. He was a 6'-3.5" 210 lb lifeguard. Nothing small about him. Oh and big feet.

for a daily driver, if you drive more than 20 miles a day, get a VW Golf.

If you buy an old Porsche keep it nice and use it around town or on weekends.

Dont waste treasures because you can.

Only the 76 912 came with the type 4. Probably the preferred model if you can find one. They seem to be going up in value.

That's a good look'n 912 for sure.... just depends on some preferences. If you're not into the performance driving as much, want a little quiter ride and a fixed roof, the 912 is a nice car.

But, read this next sentenance slowly.... "NOTHING handles like a teener. Period!" For that kind of money you can get a really nice one too. Recently we even saw a lucky member find a nice 914-6 for about that price.

I'm just over 6'3" and 210 lbs and wear size 12. It works well for me, I don't wear a hat with the top on and I've modified my lower seat cushion to sit just a tad lower.

Only the 76 912 came with the type 4.

In 1976, Porsche produced a 912E that used the 2.0 L type IV motor with L-jet fuel injection. The '67-69 912 used the 1.6L carburetted motor that was used in the 356. If you decide to buy a 1976 912E, realize that the exhaust system (heat exchangers expecially) are specific to that model and only about 2100 912E's were produced. This means that a factory replacement of the heat exchangers could be very expensive and the same holds true for some other one-model specific parts (ie, flexible rubber intake tube between throttle body and AFM).
