All,
It is time again for the annual Talimena 1 Run, on May 15, 16, and 17th. Come join us for a spirited drive from Talihina Oklahoma to Mena Arkansas along Highway 1 that runs the top of the Winding stair mountains.
Friday we arrive and sit at the hotel and socialize. Saturday we get up and drive to Mena along Highway 1. This is a "spirited" drive with frequent stops for pictures and whatever. Then we eat lunch in Mena, turn around and drive back to Talihina.
In the evening the owner of the Kiamichi Inn allows us to push the cars back and have a cookout in the parking lot, with lots of adult beverages. Then we don't have to drive anywhere, we can just walk (or stumble as the case may be ) to the rooms to sleep. Sunday we get up and drive home.
No pressure, no awards, no nothing... just a fun drive and a cookout with friends.
Anyone is welcome, even "Water Pumpers"....
For room reservations, call the Kiamichi Inn (504 Dallas St. Talihina, Ok, 74571) at 918-567-2243. VERY important, tell "Kitty" or Carmin you're with the 914 group. Oh.. rooms 11 (Joseph Mills) and 14 (Betty and I) are already reserved.
I hope a lot of you who have never been there show up....

I've got it penciled in on my calender. Need to make arrangements in a few matters for that weekend. Have always wanted to go, but have yet to make it - oughta be able to do it this year.

If anything I and others could possibly meet the group in Mena for lunch. Do you know where you will be eating? About what time?
Is anyone from Texas or Oklahoma going to Hallett Oklahoma the first weekend of May to the PCA driver's ed? I'm thrashing to get my project 914-6 ready for that. Would be nice to see more 914's there........

Forget pencil - use permanent marker on your calendar!
It's been forever since we've seen you! You'll kick yourself if you miss it!!
The drive is incredible - BOTH WAYS... and these are the absolute nicest people you'll ever meet! Not to mention the party Satuday evening in the motel parking lot.

Hi there! The more the merrier!
I looked at the route you could take to get to Talihina. If you have the time you could run Mena-Talihina coming in AND Talihina-Mena on your way back to Memphis. You'd get FOUR shots at the road!!!

I had planned on going thru HS where my Dad lives. So yes we were going to come across that way and go home that way. I have driven a few roads in this area but never back up the Ouachita River into OK. Pulled a few maps up all ready and the route looks great!!
Talk to ya'll later

You don't have to have your 914 running to come. Just bring another car. We aren't elitists, we drive 914s.
Last year, half the group was 911s, we had a couple of 944s, and an Acura.

Well my brother in law has taking my in his 914 6/gt and I will tell you one thing, it wasn't just some cozy ride. It was fast and tight turning drive. I will enjoy the thrill. Love it even more when it's in a 914 wizzing around and taking tight corners.

So... you bringing the Caddy? (just kidding... although you'd still kick our butts in that thing too!)
As far as scaring people..... I have a points system. If I can make my passenger "squeak" coming up to (I can brake REAL deep) or going around a corner - it's a point for me. If they don't squeak - it's a point for them. Loser buys the winner a drink when it's over.
I bet I would win.
I don't squeek. I would hoot and hollor for you to go faster on the straights and faster on the corners!

Home... Betty and I were working on our cars. Mine is still down... Still has the oil leak. Hers wasn't up to a drive to Mineral Wells. No Alternator. The harness from the relay board to the Alternator broke. I am putting it in as soon as it cools down. We will be there in her car tomorrow.
Posted by: Grngoat Apr 4 2009, 06:16 PM
Typical. Mine has been down since I got back from the Rocket City Ramble. Just outside of Little Rock the front mainshaft bearing gave out. I was able to drive it home in fourth, though. Fifth kept popping out.
Old cars.

Sounds interesting for next year when I hopefully have my 73 2L running again!
Haven't heard of the Talimina Run before this, but I've driven the 82/10/100 between Tahlequah & Sallisaw many times in other vehicles - mostly rentals lately & my 88 Westfalia `95-`01 every September & other times. So I'm guessing this is similar country & "twists"!

We have our room (#30) reserved.
Ken,
If you don't count the 3 schools we (PCA Maverick region) put on at the first of the year. We have 6 regular ax's and 6 Time Trials (high speed ax's). Two of the Time Trials this year will be at a real race track (MotorSport Ranch). Some of the cars will hit 90-100 mph at the TT's out in Mineral Wells, a 60 acre asphalt pad that was used to tie down helicopters at a Vietnam era Army training base.

And considering that she beat a stock 76HP 914 1.8L with a well prepped 150HP 924S, well it ain't much of an accomplishment.

Maybe you already talked to him, Clay. But Richard called me today. He is planning to go. I'm going to stay at his cabin, but we'll still drink and cookout with you. Maybe even have some Jello.
My car is broke again. Got home after the AX and pulled the tires to dismount and rotate. The passenger front is octagonal with flat spots and completely gone. The driver side is fine, but for a little wear on the inside. Shock oil is all over the passenger side suspension and wheel well. Wish I'd noticed that before.
New tires and Koni's are in the mail. With any luck it'll be back together this weekend. It never ends.
BTW, was it intentional that this is the same weekend as the next autocross at Pennington. Are you coming back Saturday night to make it, or are you skipping it? I kind of hate to miss the ones at Pennington. They're so close.
Posted by: ClayPerrine Apr 8 2009, 11:31 PM
It was not intentional. I did not look a the Maverick AX schedule when Joseph and I picked the date.
I can't speak for Travis and Robyn, but I am not driving back on Saturday night. We tried that one year, and it was a miserable drive back in the dark, and we were absolutely miserable the next day.
I am glad Richard is coming. He and Riva are always fun to be with.

Travis..
That just ain't right.
Mid-South Region has 2 DE's and the 2 mentioned ax's. The ax's are on part of Memphis MotorSports Park road course so I guess that counts for something. Last year they had 3 on part of the track and 3 on the same venues parking lot. The Regions calendar showed 6 ax's this year until last week. Something about new owners at the track. They say they are trying to save money. Yada, Yada.
Guess I should have went to the cooking school they had last month.
We have an active SCAA and the BMW club also puts on a monthly ax so I am able to get some seat time.
I complained to the National PCA. The responce from the National people was I should think about traveling to adjoining regions to ax. 2 hours to LR or 3 hrs to Nashville or Jackson. MS would make for a very long day for 6 or so 1 minute rides.
See ya'll next month...

What do Tornadoes and Arkansas divorce have in common?
A lot of noise and someone is losing their mobile home.

After looking at thread from previous run ole Hot Shoe needs to tell of his off roading experiance last fall up on the Pig Trail on NW Ark.
I looked back in the rearview after a nice downhill switchback to just see a cloud of dust and gravel flying along the outside of the curve and out into a yard. No damage and it really didn't even slow ole Donald down....

Well I believe we were well past the pig trail, even though I did spin out on the trail also, but it was a really fun ride. Long downhill with a sweeper to the right. me, well I was doing a little too much sight seeing and suddenly realized I was into the sweeper too fast. Not really too fast as much as I was in the wrong gear to power out of the curve so I ended up doing this really awesome NASCAR slide through most of the sweeper and already had my spot picked in the yard where I was going to land. Fortunately the 914 Gods were watching out for me and I stopped with only the back half of the car off road. Stuck her back in first and nailed it slinging dirt, grass and gravel everywhere as I let out a big ol YEEEEE HAAAAA and kept on trucking. WAS A NICE RUSH!!!
p.s. I bought new tires the next week!

It's somewhat of an inside joke.
But, please, bring on the firewood! It will be so much appreciated!
Since I've been away from this forum for a long, long time, here is the long, long version.
I lost my mind and started this event about 5 years ago. At that time, my nearest 914 dude was Curt in Tulsa, a 914 guy that I didn't really know, who offered and came down and helped me drop and rebuild my engine! Just like that! Curt is awesome! His attitude propelled me into the 914 world!
I recalled that in the late 70's Car & Driver magazine identified Talimena as one of the top 10 sports car roads in America. We decided that this needed to be proved behind the wheel of a 914.
If you use the search word SPARKY, you'll learn all about my blood and sweat, and all about the most awesome 914 ever - or at least in my mind
1st Place SCCA OK Region in CSP (a hard task with national champs in a honda and a miata), beat every old 911 in AX (porsche club hated me), beat that guy from Tulsa at the MUSR in Muskogee!, and demolished all Talimena pretenders.
At the same time, the 914 MUSR was going on (MUSR: Mid United States Ramble).
A tip of the hat to my friend Charley, a VERY big 914 guy, who Clay knows way better than I (that's another story), the term "Ramble" was humbly adopted with approval from a west coast contingency (?), that had done some similar events in the past (before the internet... anyone still awake?), permission was actually sought and honored.
Anyway, from the Rambles, I met and came to know Clay & Betty, which as far as I know are still successfully evading Federal Agents and between the two of them, are pretty much the voice & mind and heart & soul of 914TEXAS!!!!!!!!
Betty, if you don't know already, is... quick... in the twisties...
I'm just sayin.... been awhile...
About two years ago, or three?... Curt, who is a professional cabinet maker, built some wooden 914 bumpers (cheaper and lighter than fiberglass - remember when Porsche was racing 914's they had balsa wood struts in their hoods?).
Anyway, every year after that, when we're cold, miserable, huddled like refugees around a dying fire in Miss Kitty's parking lot, staring at our beautiful lightweight steel, fiber glass, aluminum, carbon fiber creations, the subject of Curt's Wooden Bumpers seem to come to the forefront.
Anybody got a 13mm socket?
and some matches?
I'm friggin' cold!
Lookin' to see'in ya'll real soon ya' hear?

Yet another example of the selfless sacrifices the members of the 914 community can make. (And why I didn't buy that Triumph Spitfire instead of the 914)
I'm looking forward to it. Even have a backup dog-sitter lined up, just in case. (redoing rear shocks / springs tonight, rear trunk hinges soon and the o-ring for the 901 and H4 headlights when they come in.)
Anybody know what their travel plans are yet?

Aww... thanks Joseph! I do okay for having the slowest car in my particular PCA region.
If I remember correctly, the last time we were sitting around the parking lot cooking hamburgers after the drive, Curt mentioned to somebody that he was going to put regular bumpers on his car and the wooden ones were going to get tossed. Well, the great Rust Boy (Lawrence) decided that just would not do! To allow something that had been the butt of SO many jokes for so long, just get tossed out without some sort of ceremony... so he - with Curt's permission - broke off a piece of the wooden bumper and said he had a "Higher Purpose" for it. He was going to make something out of it. I'm not sure what ever became of that... but we did throw some of the bumper on the BBQ grill and stand around drinking to it.

We haven't even started thinking about travel plans yet. I had to actually break down and put a new starter and alternator on my car last weekend because Clay's faking a broken collar bone to get out of working on my car!
But we
are already working feverishly on "FIRMING UP" our beverage plans. Get it.... "firming up".... Robyn and I are getting together to make jello shots to bring along?????
Come on! Important things first here!
Ken and I will be leaving Memphis Sometime on Friday if he ever gets his bucket of bolts running again. Take the injection off...put the carbs on...Take the carbs off...put the injection back on...car runs like crap...Yanked the injection back off....puts the carbs back on...car doesn't run. SHESH...am I the only 914 owner who never works on my car and just gets in it and
the
out of it?

Betty and I are coming up during the day. We should be there in the afternoon. Travis and Robyn will be arriving late, Robyn has to work.
There won't be any caravan up from DFW this year.
See y'all there.

I'm gonna try to get off early Friday to get there. If that doesn't happen then I'll be leaving the OKC area around 5:30 - 6ish probably which looks like a 9-10 arrival time..
Hope to get out earlier than that.

Those plans will be "firming up" right before we leave for the event. According to Robyn if you make them too far ahead they get awfully strong for some reason. We haven't figured that one out yet.
For you non-Oklahoma people; if I remember correctly (you Okie's correct me if I'm wrong).... Oklahoma has two "levels" of beer, 3.2 (lower alcohol content) and normal beer (higher alcohol content). If you want to buy normal beer, it has to be sold unrefrigerated (so you have to figure in the time it'll take to cool it down).
They have one local grocery store where you can buy beer (we all chip in and get the fixings for the cookout there) but if you want something special or exotic, you'll have to bring it yourself (Corona is about as wild and crazy as they get). We have had ALL sorts of beverages brought by people - everything from wine, to beer (ask Lawrence about the Purple Haze beer to go with his PURPLE car!), to shots, to liquor for mixed drinks - whatever your heart desires. Even had one person bring a mixer for strawberry daquiris! The motel does have ice but that's
all they have.
... I wonder if it's possible to clean up some Fuchs center caps and use them as shot glasses?
Just kidding. I'm actually happy as a clam sitting there with a beer in one hand and some of Robyn's jello shots in the other.
I've already got our high-tech, awesomely cool, bottle openers all polished up and ready to go!
(they really are cool, just wait until you see them!)
Oh yeah, you might want to bring a folding camping chair if you have one, they're more comfortable than the chairs in the hotel rooms.

We'll probably be leaving a little after you guys do (assuming we get my car running that is. Bolt that holds the fan on sheared off. Last night we got as far as partially drilling the left over bolt out and hope to finish it up tonight). If we can't get it fixed we'll show up in Clay's Porsche Valdez towing a small trailer full of cases of oil.
Besides, there's NO way my poor little 1.8 could ever keep up with you two bad boys!

I had an issue where the car stalled followed by a no-start condition. Happened again last night (no-start) as I was trying to get it into the garage ahead of the storm, so I'll be digging back into that tonight.
Hope to have it resolved by tomorrow afternoon for trouble-free motoring.

Dude! If I can push start my 914... while wearing a dress... and heels - you can push start your car, or park it on a hill if you're worried about it! <carpushingsmilie>
You can ask Travis Howard about his spiffy no start/slow starting fix on his 914! He thinks he's a freakin' Formula 1 driver now!

A chance meeting......A friend called me and said he was at a gas station in his six where I live and there were three other 914's there too. Turn out it was Don, Ken, and Kelvin on their way to Talimena!!!!!! They had stopped for gas and my friend (pcar916) was going by and saw one and when he had turned around and came back ther were three. Don asked if he knew me, I'm surprised he claimed he did, but he did and called me and Don and I spoke for a few minutes. What are the odds of that hapening? Four 914's meeting by chance?
Wanted to throw that in. I know some on the get together will be checking the 914 site. Tell Richard "HI" for me. He might remember me from the MUSR Hot Springs gathering when I had my orange factory six.......'Yall have fun and be safe........JT

Well, the weather sucked starting Friday night when the storm rolled in. Like I said earlier, there was a little hail, fortunately not enough to damage our cars. But then it rained on and off all night and Saturday. And it was foggy on much of the Talimena road. Now that wasn't enough to stop us, but it certainly slowed us down.

Kinda stinks. However 5 of us (well, 5 drivers and Clay) ran it again on Sunday morning on the way home. Definately the long way home, but definately worth it. The weather was beautiful. I've got a little video of that, but I need to trim it some. I'll post it tomorrow night.

I've gotta get back into the 914 event groove. Penelope is still percolatin' and will enjoy a new LSD tranny I'm assembling as we speak. Should finish it this coming week barring unforseen circumstances. Hope all is well with you and the family.

No, it does not. For some reason, the sprocket looking piece that bolts to the drivers side longeron and provides the locking mechanism for the e-brake is gone. Has been as long as I've owned it. The cable is connected and works, but it won't hold tension at all. Anybody got an extra one for sale?
It's normally not a problem, since the compression on that 3.6 will hold it just fine. But in this picture, my shift linkage has come loose and the car is stuck in neutral, so engine compression is useless. Plus, this is in the mountains, so rocks like that are everywhere. I don't carry a parking rock in the car.
I've got Boxster brakes in the garage I'm about to swap onto it, so I'll loose the e-brake soon anyways. Until I can hook up a 911 style system.

DUDE!!!!
You literally have TWICE the motor that she does.... It is no wonder you were leaving us behind!
Plus, Betty won't tuck up tight with anyone. She is paranoid about the whole tailgating thing.

Yes, but she's twice the driver that I am, so that makes it even.
It's the all the dead weight in her passenger seat that made the difference.

Aww....
Thanks for the compliment Avery! Every time we hit a straight or a steep uphill grade you just flew away from me like a fighter jet.
We were both in awe! I only managed to reel you back a little bit in the twisty bits.
But you, young Paduan, have snatched the light saber, pebble, whatever, from my outstretched driving glove.
I've been watching when you run at the autocrosses and you're doing great!
As far as Clay.... I didn't make him squeak; so either he's getting more trusting, or I successfully toned it down because of his collar bone.

No dead weight here.. I am the ride along mechanic. If I am there, the car knows it, and doesn't break........Unlike some Yellow 914-6s that I know..

Oh, yeah? Tell us again how much last minute flogging was required to make the trip?

It is prep work, not flogging. And it didn't break DURING the trip.. unlike someone we know.....

So when is the 2010 Talimena going to happen?

So when is the 2010 Talimena going to happen?
Due to multiple problems here (like 2 broken 914s and all my available vactaion time spoken for this year) ... there is no Talimena this year. If things go well, it will happen again next year.

Too bad Clay. I was looking forward to being able to go this year if I buy a new 914 I am looking at. Oh well. I hope that your two get fixed soon!

I am moving forward on the car problems here.
Started the freshly rebuilt motor in Betty's 914 just this evening. It was getting close to curfew, so we stopped for the night. I will get it tweaked and on the road tomorrow.
Mine is a different story... spun rod bearing on #5 in the 2.4 six. Replacement core motor goes on the stand for teardown as soon as Betty's car is off the lift. Got to tear it down and get the case shuffle pinned and the oil bypass mod done.
Not a bad weekend so far.

Wow that sucks. Wish I could offer a hand but I am deployed right now until May 26th.

Ever consider a fall Talimena? Maybe extend it to the 'Pig Trail' and up to Eureka Springs? Could be fun...
Posted by: vsg914 Jul 13 2010, 12:03 PM
I like that idea Chad. We could leave talihina in the morning, drive highway 1, then on to the pig trail that afternoon, and Eureka that evening. That would be a full day of awesome driving.

I would be there as well as 1 other from Memphis I do believe.
The wkend of Aug 24 or 28 was prelim discussed earlier in the 'Teeners in Okie' thread by jcambo and myself for a Telimena run?? Might even be better in Sept tho??
Keep this talk going....

Sept or even Oct are both good times of the year. Not much tourist traffic on the road like in the summer, and much cooler. My car and I both like that.

MUSR in October.
August will be HOT and schools are starting
A Saturday in early Sept might draw the biggest crowd.

Sept or Oct would be good for me! I would definitely be there!

Earlier in Sept the better for anyone thinking of MUSR11??
Looks like Palooza is Nov 12-14 this year??

Did the drive on New Years and stayed in the Hotel on top of the mountain. Dead ugly drive in the winter with all the trees dead, but nobody on the road. The hotel was empty and great - old fashioned with fireplaces and some snow outside.

Ever hear of Porsche Palooza? Usually 1st or 2nd weekend in November up in Eureka Springs.

The guys that put that on have been after me for a couple of years to get the 914 contingent together.

Yes, that hotel is really neat. We usually grab a B&B but often go up to the Hotel to catch a carriage ride or take pictures. It has great views of the entire valley. I actually like the drive in winter. My wife and I occasionally go to Eureka for our anniversary in February. Of course, one year we got hit with a snowstorm as we were leaving to come home - *that* was a harrowing experience!
For this, tho, a Fall drive seems more appropriate.

Sounds like a good opportunity. Of course, the drive will take up most of Saturday so that might interfere with the Palooza-tivities.
Just checked, this year's event is Nov 12-14. Looks like Sunday is just the autocross and lunch, so perhaps meet in Eureka on Saturday, partake any desired events, then take the Pig Trail and Talimena on the way home Sunday.
