914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Matching Engine Number to VIN

How does one match an Engine Number to a VIN? I have an original 914/6 engine and would like to know what VIN it was installed into from the factory. My Engine has two different numbers stamped on it: 6404153 & 901/38

This is done by getting a Certificate of Authenticity (COA) which will list the VIN and engine number and trans number and options. I think this is obtained through PCNA.

WHOOPS, I'm a wealth of mis-information. Re-read you post that you have just the engine, not the body. In that case, I think there is no way except to post the engine number on various sites and hope you get a bite.

901/38 is a USA spec 914-6 motor. 64004153 is probably a 71 model engine. Porsche probably could not tell you where this engine went unless they can crossreference in the database about engine numbers.

Brian, 6404153 is a 1970 914-6 motor and it is a fairly early motor. Reference is that my Factory Six is Vin# 673 and the motor is 6404444.

Porsche won't give you the Vin# it belongs to. They do the opposite, if you have the Vin#, they will give you the engine #

This engine would belong in VIN 9140430250 + or - 50
6404153 is engine 153 of the 6404000 series of engines (type 901/38)

I have a 1970 six # 1937 and I just went and looked at the engine, #*6405237* The engine has been on shelf in my garage for about 15 years. I've never asked for a certificate from Porsche but have no reason to think this is anything but the origional engine.
