914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Camber Gauge

Posted by: kdfoust Mar 31 2003, 02:07 AM

I'm buying a camber gauge and have been looking at both the http://www.soloperformance.com/catalog_equipment.htm and the bubble type gauge like this http://www.longacreracing.com/images/products/setup/78260.jpg.

I assume that the smartcamber is the hyper-trick tool for the job, but, it's twice as expensive as the bubble-type gauge. If you've used these (or other) portable camber gauges could you relay that experience? I'm planning to buy this week. I can buy either, it's just that I don't wish to spend more than is needed to accomplish the job...

Thanks,
Kevin

SmartCamber all the way.

I have used them several times when I dont have a laser setup near by.

The only problem I have ever had with them: In the past.. the Smart directions for setting the camber gauge to zero was lacking. This has since changed and the process is well documented with the new version.

Make sure you purchase it with all the adapters. I think they sell a extra adapter or two..like a extra wheel holder or something.

How are you ?? havent heard from you in awhile.

Yeah, that's what I thought. Off to spend more money... biggrin.gif

I've been busier than a one-legged man in an ass-kicking contest at my "real job." But it's all good, I'm filling for a couple of patents right now (no I can't say what they are for) which does take up a good bit of effort even at a big corporation with a legal staff and a people to help the process along.

Have fun,
Kevin

What comes with the Longacre one? If it doesn't have a way to attach it to the wheel, that's an extra expense right there.

I actually went out and bought myself a cheapo "angle finder" (non-digital) at Orchard. Very innaccurate--probably only OK down to about a half-degree--but close enough for very rough checks. I figure I'm just getting it close until I get to a real alignment shop...

Kevin,

I have one that I've used a few times now...I ended up getting the larger frame unit (to use on my 20" truck wheels) along with the Pro 360 module

I picked the more expensive Digital SmartLevel Modules for two reasons...1st: I bought the unit with one other person so the cost was split...
2nd: The Pro 360 can be used in more places around the shop and home for setting up other things or construction.

Hey, Mueller, what's this PRO360 module? Is that the electronic level that gets attached to the smartcamber or is this an entirely different camber gauge setup?

Thanks,
Kevin

There are 3 different Digital Levels, I have the mid-level unit.

Hey, check out the link that Mueller posted. I think Smart Racing wasn't so smart and forgot to renew their smartcamber domain. drooley.gif

So are the smart camber gauges sufficient to do as good a job as an alignment shop would do?

I have three alignments coming up: the Jetta, the 914, and then eventually the 911 if I swap out t-bars.

Hand level & a broke off piece of tape measure gets me within .25 deg. I take it in for a 4 wheel alignment after any serious suspension work...tain't rocket science, just plane geometry. How much for that gauge????

DAMN.. she is not bad...LOL

With needing to do 2 alignments in the immediate future I'm wondering if they are worth the effort.
