www.egauges.com handles VDO and electronic GPS adjustable gauges.
While I doubt that VDO makes one for the 914. There was a thread not too long ago on the subject where a vendor claims to be able to retrofit a 914 gauge with the electronic guts....
Do a search using my screen name and it should come up.
I think these guys have the one that bolts right up:

http://www.egauges.com does sell a Hall effect sensor for the VDO electronic speedometer, then all you need is a bracket to hold the sensor and an exciter on a CV Joint. There was a company that would modify the CV joint flange (basically machined a bunch of 1/4" teeth into it) that became the exciter. I bought one for my VW about 10 years ago that has worked great. Can't remember the name of the outfit though. They would have about a 3 page spread in HotVWs all on an orange background. Probably out of business now.
EDIT: Sure enough, Barrett Enterprises was the place and they are out of business AFAIK (http://members.aol.com/barrettvw/ was their web address but AOL Hometown is gone too.)
Might also be able to make a toothed ring out of 16 gauge sheet metal that could bolt on to the CV.
I'll post some pictures up later and see if I can find the instructions that came with it.
A company that makes kits for vanagons with suby motors makes a vss to work with the suby ecu. It goes on thevanagon cv I think. It may not have enough teeth for your application. The company is Small Car. Or maybe Small Car Performance.
thanks everyone for the assistance
Hah! I found it. Made by United Speedometer & Instrument, Inc.
Not much of a website, but this is who made it! http://www.speedometershop.com
I have a VDO electronic speedo that I got about 8 years ago after seeing one in one of the VW magazine and learning that one was available for the 914 sized dash hole. As I recall, I had to source a GM sender from a local speedo shop along with the short cable to connect it to the existing 914 gear connection on the tranny. I have a feeling that a search of VDO's site will find you what you need.
