What is the history on the silver car?

The red one has been well documented but I don't recall much about the silver 914/8

Pretty much! It must have been a pretty funny site. I think Ferry's was still there as a result of the 914 exhibit they had through May 10. The Silver one was at the top of the museum all by it's lonesome. Most people were just walking by, while I was trying to shot through the windows for dash detail and holding my camera under the car. I guess it looked pretty plain if you did not see or know the history.

The Museum is fantastic. I got lucky and had a few hours to burn on a work trip. My jaw hit the ground when I saw Ferry's car there. It was neat to see the details on the closed top car.

Congrats on COTM! Your 914 would have fit right in at the Museum.

They gave the silver car to Ferry as a birthday present?

What cheap bastards. It doesn't have a radio. (maybe there was an 8 track hanging under the dash.)

I pulled this off of Google:

Kontrolle fuer feuerloescher - Control of fire

kraftst - Virtue?

strom kreis - Circular flow pump? Fuel pump?

My german is horrible and I think the translators missed the context.

Thats for the front oil cooler..
The Silver car was a present for Porsche to Ferry made special for him....he loved the car with its flat 8.

The Red car was a "test car" so what do you need a radio for on the track....although it was driven around on the streets some by Piech.

Posted by: Ferg Jun 3 2009, 11:46 AM

One of those should be on a plane to Keystone Parade this year (I WISH)

Lucky!

Here's the correct translation:

Kontrolle fuer Feuerloescher = "Control for fire suppressing system"

Kraftst. Pumpe = Kraftstoff Pumpe = "Fuel Pump"

Strom Kreis = "Electrical System"

My best guess on the "Electrical System" would be a battery cutoff of sorts.

Kontrolle fuer Feuerloescher => control for fire extinguisher ... this car has a 2 way fire extinguisher (see the yellow arrows at the photo)

Kraftst. Pumpe = Kraftstoffpumpe = fuel pump

Stromkreis = electrical circuit

Your thread made me think about going! I tried to find some one, but it was crowded and the other three people I was with humoured me for a few hours. I got a "last call" from them on my third trip top the silver /8!

We saw a few Panameras running around with mfg plates. My camera poked through the sunroof, and then the drivers would take off! They look pretty good in person.

Does the red car have four headlights? I was just wondering from the size of the headlight covers.

BTW the pics rock aktion035.gif

Posted by: Dave_Darling Oct 6 2009, 12:03 AM

Yes, it does. It was made from a prototype chassis, and has a number of non-production features on it. The silver one was also made from a prototype, but one with different features.

I haven't seen the pic of this car from the back, from back in the day. The sunroof caught my eye. I didn't realize this car was steel-roofed. I like this one better than the orange one as the round front wheel wells bother me. Both have the hood crest too far forward though. bootyshake.gif biggrin.gif
