914World.com _ 914World Garage _ PNW transmission rebuild clinic planning thread

Posted by: Dr Evil Jun 16 2009, 11:03 AM

The important stuff ( clarified 7/17):

The gist:
- This is happening on the days of Sept 12 and 13. All day. BYOB and food. Clean up after yourself.
- This is happening at Jake Odule's in Battlefield, OR

*If you bring one or more gear boxes for rebuild then the cost is $300
*Spectating is free and you can ask questions (but will have to wear a thong on the out side of your pants so we know you are freeloading tongue.gif )
*The cost includes: gloves, rags, cleaners, parts trays, aluminum baking sheets for parts cleaning spots, sarcasm, foul language (when no kids around), etc.
*New parts area available through me ( I will beat any suppliers prices, let me know). Seal kits area available before hand for $40
*People are encouraged to bring cores to part out as people will potentially need more parts than I will have. Also, you all will likely deplete my stash and I will need more parts for the next 2 clinics smile.gif
*The clinic is 2 full days and I will work as long as you do. I usually start at 0930 and go until after 2200 if necessary.
*PM me if you are going to be a paying guest and make sure to tell me which clinic you are going to attend.
*DRAIN your gear box before the event!
*CLEAN the out side of it a little. Not spotless, but enough to keep if from crapping up the place
*Bring cardboard to protect the facilities smile.gif

This should be fun!

I'm out 19-25 July - otherwise the summer is pretty open.

Due to work commitments would prefer a Saturday or Sunday.

Posted by: Dr Evil Jun 16 2009, 11:22 AM

I am only busy for the 4th of July so far. The clinic does not have to be right away. It needs to be when it is best for everyone. I am likely to be interviewing starting Nov through the end of Jan so times will be more up in the air then. Fri-Sun definitely is best as most work 5 days a week, but I can do week days as well.

Posted by: my928s4 Jun 16 2009, 11:26 AM

I am gone 15-24th July, open all of August.

Posted by: Dr Evil Jun 16 2009, 11:37 AM

It looks like Aug will be the best bet so far.

Posted by: Todd Enlund Jun 16 2009, 11:42 AM

I'll probably be there for BS and beer, but unless there is a miracle, I won't be able to afford to rebuild the tranny.

And, unless I manage to sell the house before then, I have plenty of room if anyone needs a place to stay.

Posted by: Dr Evil Jun 16 2009, 11:47 AM

Um, Todd, you owe me nothing. Havent you forgotten the work that you have done and continue to do for me? Bring a box and we will handle it smile.gif

Posted by: Jakeodoule Jun 16 2009, 12:17 PM

I am interested...I live in the portland area and could host as well.
guest house, Big shop with lots of room.
Only weekend I cannot do would be Aug 14th,15th and 16th.

^^^ Hey I just replaced all of the phones at the City of Battleground!

If you guys choose to come to my place, here is my contact info.
Rich Wright. 541-914-8115. My house is about 12 miles East of I-5 on hwy 126 in Walterville. There is a store and restaurant/bar next door. Plenty of room for campers and room for a few in the house. If folks want to come and don't have a tranny to work with, let me know. I need to make a call to verify but I think I could get as many 901 sideshifters as we could possibly need.

Posted by: mstein95 Jun 16 2009, 01:25 PM

August works for me - I'll be in attendance.

First part of August or anytime in Sept. would work for me.

Jerry

Posted by: Shade Tree Jun 16 2009, 03:15 PM

I'm open any weekend so long as I have enough notice to schedule some vacation before customers schedule my time for me.

I`m in ...do we bring a tranny or just have one there to play with ?Im pretty open on dates

YEA!

Posted by: scotty Jun 16 2009, 05:11 PM

Early to mid-August would be great (late August brings dreaded "inservice" days)

Posted by: aircooledtechguy Jun 16 2009, 05:20 PM

I'm interested and flexible on my schedule.

If you spectate you dont bring a tranny and you dont pay. If you bring a tranny you pay and it is rebuilt. Other than that, if you were determined to lay your hands on the guts of a gear box I am sure one of the many that would be there would be willing to oblige smile.gif

I have one extra and know a guy who has several. I haven't asked him how much he wants for them yet.

AS long as it isn't the weekend of the shootout at Packwood I'm in! That actually works better. I can't swing sending my tranny out this month Evil dry.gif . Daughters had 2 different BBall camps this month. Kind of screwed my car budget. Plus I bought another parts car. Which will help as it gives me the extra tranny I need. I'll plan on bringing 2 up. Looking forward to it biggrin.gif

Posted by: Dr Evil Jun 17 2009, 12:42 AM

I cant take any more trannies here at the moment. My garage is full and I am back logged for the first time ever smile.gif Sept is looking like the most responsible month to do it. Maybe my bus will be done and I can drive it across the country......and maybe monkeys will fly out of my ass confused24.gif

looks like we will be staying in the same place then ..how cool is that ..LOL...and i can haul at least 5 people from the PNW in the pickup with lots of room for trannys as well and stuff.....as long as its not 914shootout weekend in packwood like Jamie said

Posted by: Todd Enlund Jun 17 2009, 11:50 AM

Both Mikes can stay here smile.gif And anyone else that needs a spot is welcome. I've got lots of room. Three empty bedrooms and a living room. Unless the house sells before the clinic...

I don't think that anyone has thrown the dates out, but the Packwood Shootout is 8-9 August.

How about Labor Day weekend? 5-6 September?

Posted by: Larouex Jun 17 2009, 11:53 AM

I am out of town in Aug on 8.14 - 8.17. I can make any other dates, including Sept.

Posted by: Todd Enlund Jun 17 2009, 11:57 AM

Oh, hey... the other thread mentioned a keg. I can brew a batch of beer, and bring a 5 gallon keg. What style does everyone like? IPA, Pale Ale, Mild, Amber, Brown, Stout, Porter, Witbier, Kolsch, Barleywine...

Posted by: Shade Tree Jun 17 2009, 12:14 PM

OOOHHH. I like brown and porter beerchug.gif . The 5th of Sept is my wedding anniversary. So if this ends up happening on that date, well, that's how my luck goes. headbang.gif

Posted by: Jakeodoule Jun 17 2009, 12:24 PM

Just wondering, if we've got 6-10 trani's to rebuild, will there be enough room for everyone to work? Do you do them one at a time? Will there be enough time to do them all. Or will we end up with a cluster @#$@ of mixed up parts everywhere?
Have you done this clinic before with half a dozen/more boxes all over the place?
Do you have a rough outline of the class? Not doubting your skills, just wondering about the logistics.
Thanks
Also should we order parts/seals in advance or will you bring them?

Posted by: Phoenix 914-6GT Jun 17 2009, 12:29 PM

piratenanner.gif Cool Mike. It will be fun to have you out in the area. I'll be sure to be there at least to visit. I have a ton of gears if anyone needs any. I even have a perfect X gear if anyone is interested.

Jake, questions are good smile.gif We do all the boxes at once. You can progress at your own comfort level so if you fall be hind that is just fine, I will be there with you the whole way and your neighbors will help out as well. Last time this worked out wonderfully.

I cant do the 1st weekend in Sept as my mom in low is coming to town (its cool, I like her smile.gif ). After that is it pretty much on smile.gif Pick a date after that and I will pencil it in.

For those of you definitely bringing boxes, thus paying fees, PM me so I can start a list and get an idea of the resources we will be needing.

For the day of I supply gloves, rags, cleaners, parts trays, aluminum baking sheets for parts cleaning spots, sarcasm, foul language (when no kids around), etc.

I like me a Brown beer chowtime.gif beer.gif

The 12th is semi far out, but I have some very important stuff to do before hand. If things change, they change, but I can plan for the 12th and give everyone a good head start. I need to do killer on the 3rd step of my license exam before I submit my applications in Sept.

So, lets focus on the 12th from now on so I can let the other clinics know what dates are taken smile.gif

I'm about 30 minutes from the Eugene Airport and about 90 minutes...or so, from the Portland airport. If there are folks coming from Southern Oregon and the Portland area, my place is pretty close to the middle. If everybody that's coming is from the Portland area, I'm out of everybody's way and we should probably look at a place farther north. I'm open to whatever you guys want to do. We need a good head count by region to see where everybody will be coming from.

Posted by: Dr Evil Jun 17 2009, 04:16 PM

I agree. Is there anyone else that has read this thread and feels that they can handle this crowd for a weekend?

Posted by: my928s4 Jun 17 2009, 04:45 PM

I am 5 hours north/east of Portland, further South is less preferable but I will bow to the masses.

Posted by: Dr Evil Jun 17 2009, 04:47 PM

We need a host, otherwise it will be at the Shad Tree garage smile.gif

Posted by: Shade Tree Jun 17 2009, 05:12 PM

A rough count: 3 folks fairly close to me, 1 from down south and 11 from Portland and north of Portland.

Posted by: Dr Evil Jun 17 2009, 05:15 PM

Anyone heard from Craig Laughlin lately? He has room and is in Lake Oswego. How far is that?

Posted by: Todd Enlund Jun 17 2009, 06:25 PM

No offense to Rich, and thanks for offering, but if Jakeoudoule can host, he's much closer to the center of mass. Walterville is 2+ hours each way from Portland (135 miles). Battleground is <30 minutes (19 miles). Lake O is about the same from the airport, a bit closer for those living in Portland proper.

Posted by: J P Stein Jun 17 2009, 06:40 PM

Another option.
I am about 20 minutes from Portland airport & easy to find.
There is plenty of bench space in the shop but I have no overnight accommodations. I don't need a trans rebuild but have some parts & assemblies under the bench.....plus tools. Bout a case of beer in the fridge that needs to get drank(drunk?)....I don't do the stuff much.

Not only do I not take offense, I agree. I'd love to have all of you guys down to my place for some fun but it seems like it would be a PITA for everyone but me. However, if Jakeoudoule's place falls through or for whatever reason there isn't a better place....all are welcome to, as Dr. Evil named it, "The Shade Tree Garage". That's kind of fitting too. I don't care where this thing happens. I'm really excited to learn a new trick.

Posted by: JRust Jun 17 2009, 07:32 PM

I'm open to wherever. I'd offer my place but I realy don't have much for benches to work on. Nor is my stock of tools probably up for multiple tranny's. I am north of Shadetrees & south of Portland. I have been to Jp's & he has nice garage setup for sure.

Having said all that I'd be happy to host & have plenty of parking. We can rig extra benches but would need people to bring extra tools. I also have some room for overnighters. Camping would be no problem. I have a 3 car garage with the single bay being my porsche area. It's pretty large I can fit 3 914's sideway in it. I love it but the downside is I'm in the flood plain. So I don't have much for plugs in the garage.

Okay so there is another possibility. I'll go wherever it is biggrin.gif

Posted by: championgt1 Jun 17 2009, 08:02 PM

I don't need to rebuild my tranny(knock on wood). I would be down to come and watch and drink some of Todds home brew! beer3.gif

Posted by: Dr Evil Jun 17 2009, 09:06 PM

I can always crash as Todd's if the venue has no over night accommodations.

So, we should assemble a list of all of the host candidates and take a vote. As for tools, all anyone needs to bring is a 14mm socket, 13mm socket, 10mm socket (only need one), 5mm allen (only need one) and that is about it. I will get some more sets of the special tools for everyone to use depending on the number of people showing. Getting more tools just makes sense given the scope of this tour.

I would be interested to attend and possibly participate. My stock 73 tranny is grinding going from 1st to 2nd (only when at high rpm) and going from 3rd to 2nd (again at high rpm). That being said, I'm open to any time I've got vacation time to burn. Two questions though, What's the cost and do I have to bring anything besides the tranny and tools?

From post #35, "For the day of I supply gloves, rags, cleaners, parts trays, aluminum baking sheets for parts cleaning spots, sarcasm, foul language (when no kids around), etc."

I need to post the pertinent stuff like this in the first post smile.gif

Seal kits are available for $40. If you intend to bring a tranny I need a list of problems you are having with it so I can generate a parts list. There will likely be some cores there that can be cannibalized for cheap used parts, as well. smile.gif

So, are we down for J P Stein's now? I am unclear as to where this unholy event will happen. Pig roast, eh. I have never been to one, but I love the swine chowtime.gif

Sorry guys, I haven't really checked the threads in a while except to double post (Eeeek) yesterday on a cool car.

If we really have 21, I don't have enough garage space to set up 21 tables and keep us under cover and dry. Todd has been to my shop/garage so he knows. September is usually good weather here so I would be happy to host a BBQ for those attending.

Another thought - I have friends who own a couple of vacant warehouse spaces in portland that just might work (for no charge - if we keep them clean and clean up after ourselves) but I would need to check if there is interest.

Dr. E - PM me if you want to talk about more details and I will give you my numbers.

I am in - at a minimum - for a tranny class! (Bras and panties optional smile.gif )

Yeah. Lets figure something out. How is the trans in the red car?

i am in....i will bring a tranny or two,
i will plan on staying a nite, at a local hotel if necessary
and can bring some crappy canadian beer
and i've gained some weight, but i think the thong will still look great
i can bring a few,
but if you want them washed, that is gonna be extra biggrin.gif
i think craigs place would be great, lots of room in his shop
and is close to hotels, or we can pitch tents with the cows outside
but i have not heard or seen him on the board for a while

Do we have a consensus on where it's gonna be yet? Was it said to be at J P Steins or Shade Tree? Portland is a 5 Hour drive for me. My leash isn't that long so can we keep it no further than Portland (wife's request)? PLEASE!! if it is than I probably will attend anyways but the tranny in the back seat of my jeep will be unhappy and asking all the way "are we there yet"?

21+ people is alot! Do we get a "i survived the PNW tranny clinic" shirt?

This can be worked around if any responsible person shows up. biggrin.gif

Posted by: Jakeodoule Jun 18 2009, 05:56 PM

I could host, have a nice motorhome for a guest house. sleeps 3 if you don't want to cuddle. Also have plenty of parking if someone wants to camp in a trailer or tent. I'm lucky to have nicely finished shop. 1 section is 25x30 and the other is about 24x24. both sections pumbed with air, a nice part washer, two motorcycle lifts that make good tables and some other roll around tables. But 21 is alot of people. How many watchers and how many trani's?
I am 22 miles NE of portland airport

Posted by: Dr Evil Jun 18 2009, 06:28 PM

I updated the 1st post to reflect who is paying and who is watching. Let me know if you are not on the list you should be on (I still need to tally spectators).

When we did this last time it was in a small 2 car garage with a 914 in the one bay and 14 or so people in the other. You will be amazed at how little room you need per person smile.gif Seats are nice and a table is as well, but the table is not necessary.

Jake, your shop sounds perfect and available. I am amazed at how many people stepped up to offer lodging. This is a great group and the event will be worth it. smile.gif

I will make certificates and if you want we can do shirts. I am sure Todd has an idea and oldschool can make them up.

Dr Evil,
(if thats his real name shades.gif )
I will be rebuilding my 76. I need a seal kit. please.
Both my speedo and shift shaft are leaking. I am assuming the seals are in the kit.
Also my 4th gear whines pretty good. pretty much only when on neutral throttle.
On or off the gas the load on the gears stops it.
Is that a bearing? can you bring a new one? Other than that noise, my trani shifts and works good.

Battle Ground is about 10 miles east of I-5 and 20 miles north of portland airport.
I had a couple of emails about facilities.
My shop does have a bathroom and shower. I live in the woods so camping is pretty nice. Nice flat grass. Or I do have room for camping trailers if you want to bring something like that. As long as its not a 40 footer, My diverway is a little tight for that. Motels are at least 10 miles away.
We can sort out all the details as we get near.
Are we firm on that date then? Sep 12th & 13th...

I sorted the picture thing. I was trying to insert image instead of attatching it. wacko.gif

If anyone needs gears with syncros & dog teeth, lemme no and I'll bring some along. If the good doctor is bringing parts I won't infringe on his sales, tho. I gotta tear down another one as the GA mainshaft is gettin' sold. Typically, first gears/sliders are in short supply and those I have are shakey. The rest is gud stuff.

We've talked about that so you know the deal there. Probably doing the block off on 1st gear too. The other will be a stock job.

gary emory @parts obsolete had bins of trans parts. could be a source. i know dave hunt has been down there and scrounged a few times.

Posted by: DNHunt Jun 20 2009, 08:54 AM

Yep Gary has a ton of stuff. He may have some core boxes and he has bins of transmission parts. If I remember right, the tranny parts are not all sorted. I know I came home once with a 915 1st gear when I wanted a 901 1st. He's not always cheap but, in a bind he may be able to help. He has a barn full of parts for all kinds of Porsche stuff and usually has some cool cars he's working on. I'll see what I can find out. As the time gets closer we may be able to get a shopping list together and have a look see.

"Freeloaders" is a tongue in cheek term wink.gif What you are recommending will likely keep the numbers down, though blink.gif

It sounds as if many people are bringing cores for parts. I'll take this moment to ask that if anyone has cores to part they either post it here of PM me so I can get an idea. We have a record number of potential attendees and I am running out of used stock with the amount of work I have going on in my garage so I am not put off by people bringing extra anything. Let me know so I know if we have enough. I will teach you all how to cannibalize a tranny (sounds bad, do you think they taste queer?)

Here's the deal, Our place is kinda in the woods and I have plenty of space for anyone to camp. Tent, trailer or whatever.
I have beds for 3 in our Motorhome.
I also have two tents and 2 sleeping bags up for grabs.
There's a leather couch in the shop that somebody can sleep on as well.
I do have a full bath and shower in the shop. Those that care can clean up.
I have a large fire pit and endless wood for saturday night. so camping may be the best option if your able. Anytime you get a campfire/beer going, I'm sure some lies will be told...

All beds and or tents are on a first come first emailed offer. I am however reserving one bed for Dr. Evil if he wants it.

I do have a full bath and shower in the shop. Those that care can clean up.

The closest Motel is 9 miles away in downtown Battle Ground.

I spoke with the gal "Bindiya" She said double rooms are normal 119.00 for Sat night but she would give a teener deal of $100.00 with 2 queen beds. Just tell her your with John Clemens and PGS. That is my company and I told her we we're having a business meeting...
Kinda pricey but spit by two is not too bad.

As far as food, I really don't have any delivery to my house. I figure with as many watchers as we'll have, we can send someone out for pizza/beer as needed.

All I would ask is everyone bring they're own hand tools and drain the gearbox before coming over.
I have air tools should anyone need them. I will email directions as we get closer to the date.
Should be fun.
Thanks,

Posted by: Todd Enlund Jun 29 2009, 04:26 PM

Very cool. I have room as well if anyone needs it, if not, I might just bring a tent.

I'll bring 5 gallons of "Odoule's Evilbrau". Tentative recipe:

13 lbs Pale Malt
2 lbs Belgian Biscuit Malt
1 lb British Chocolate Malt
1 lb Cara-Pils
.5 lb Crystal 105L
.13 lb Roasted Barley

1 oz Centennial 60 min
2 oz Northern Brewer 15 min
1 oz Centennial 2 min
1 oz Amarillo dry

1.073 OG
40 SRM
53 IBU
7.5% abv

If the numbers mean nothing to you... 40 SRM is dark, nearly black. 53 IBU is well within the IPA range for bitterness. 7.5% abv is about 1.5x most American lagers. The chocolate malt give a dark color and a flavor similar to chocolate. Biscuit give a bready flavor. Crystal gives a caramel sweetness. Roast Barley gives a coffee bite, and Cara-Pils will add some body. The hops will add an orange-lemon citrus aroma and flavor, with a bitter kick.

I'm open to hearing opinions and suggestions... feel free to state them, and I'll decide whether to ignore them or not biggrin.gif

This is based on previous requests for "dark" "brown" "porter" "IPA" and "hoppy"

I'll see if I can think of a good snack to bring as well.

This is based on previous requests for "dark" "brown" "porter" "IPA" and "hoppy"

I'll see if I can think of a good snack to bring as well.

All beds and or tents are on a first come first emailed offer. I am however reserving one bed for Dr. Evil if he wants it.

The closest Motel is 9 miles away in downtown Battle Ground.
www.bestwesternbattleground.com

Thanks,
Jake/John

Mike, the prospect of a thong has me a little ..unsettled. So Ill find a way to scrape up the 3 + bills, being quasi unemployed times are tough.
I can bring a side shift box, parts box and tail shift for conversion or cannible action.
Jake your shop looks awesome, looking forward to talking bikes.
Ill prolly drag a camper with me so if anyone from Seattle area is going & wants to split gas there's a 2nd pretty comfy bed available in it.

You DONT want to see me in a thong... I thought I was on the list for a build, but missed out, I guess. With 19 (holysh*t) rebuilding gearboxes, I don't think you are going to have enuff room for us "leaches"...

Have you thought about making it a two day event? (Half on Sat / Half on Sun?)

If so, I'd like to build a gearbox, sir. and I'll gladly pay...

I'll even bring my own table and easyup!

I don't think I'll have the $$$ to fix my gearbox, but I will at least try to make it down there for an edumacation. blink.gif

Evil, do you have a approximation on parts cost to cure the 2nd gear grind (based on typical failures/wear of course), I'm guessing the friction rings. Mine shifts fine if I give it a pause in between gears.

So far I'm figuring $300 + $40 +????

I've had my Mk2 transaxle apart, so I'm not too frightened by the prospect.

Posted by: Dr Evil Jul 20 2009, 08:17 PM

If you buy new parts you could be in for:
- $285 slider
- $150 Dog teeth
- $75 synchro

Total = $510

Used:
- Slider $75
- Dog teeth $50
- Synchro $30

Total = $155 (big difference, no?)

Posted by: Dr Evil Jul 20 2009, 08:38 PM

BTW, if you are interested in buying used parts off of me be aware it is first come first served so PM me and I will get you set up. We can talk about the problems you are having and decide what parts you need. Once they are gone, though, they are gone. smile.gif

If you have sent me your tranz issues already but wish to use some used part please re send the info regarding such.

So, if I think I have a 2nd gear synchro issue, do I order beforehand? I'm a little concerned, as the box has been out of the car for several years, so I'm going from memory...

Posted by: Dr Evil Jul 21 2009, 09:32 PM

I would reserve the parts for you if you want. I have never had anyone need to buy a new slider as I tend to have about 10 or so wink.gif Sycnhro bands on the other hand are becoming in short supply. I think I need to take inventory tomorrow or tonight and see what is going on.

Posted by: J P Stein Jul 21 2009, 09:56 PM

Lemmeno what you're short of, Doc. I have some good stuff and may be able to get more. Dog teeth are interchangable, are they not....the trick seems to be getting them off without damaging them. 2/3 & 4/5 sliders are also interchangable& the same with brake bands. I *could* go check this out, but it's easier to ask you. biggrin.gif

Posted by: Dr Evil Jul 21 2009, 09:59 PM

You can use dog teeth in all spots, but if use on 1st it needs all of the guts on the inside (I can use this). Sliders are interchangeable and the 4/5 ones tend to be as good as new. Let me see what I am short on, I wont sell anything that looks used. Whats the point? I will let you know.

Where are the campers camping? I'll be looking for a place to set up a tent, right now I'm leaning toward the Battle Ground State Park, unless a bunch of you guys are camping elsewhere.

I will probably bring some thirst quenchers so I'm not a complete moocher, but since I'm currently contemplating going to Monterey for a day or two of the Historics, I definitely won't have $$$ for rebuilding the trans. Guess I'll just have to drive it down there!

Everyone is welcome to camp here at the house. I live in the woods and have plenty of flat grass for tents. Also room for a camping trailer or two. Nice firepit, a full bathroom in the shop, so your all welcome. Depending on the final numbers I have a second BQ on stand by. I've got plenty of space (10 acres)and very private. There's no reason to pay for a spot at battleground lake.
Arrive Friday night or Sat. morning. Doesn't matter. I will be here Friday night rearranging my shop anyway.
Not sure if I'm picking up the Dr. or not. So I may be gone around 7 to 8 if so.
Other than that I will be here.
All beds I have are now spoken for.
I do have two tents with sleeping pads and bags if anyone needs one.
As we get closer I will email directions to everyone.

Well, I was one of the hold outs: Dr.Evil, PM sent. I have to decline. sad.gif

My funds are tied up with an attorney and I will be DEAP into a custody issue with my kids.

I love my car and really want to have the tranny rebuilt; however, I love my kids more! grouphug.gif
The funds have to remain in constant supply to feed my attorney! And I need the ruling to go in my favor, I AM GOING FOR FULL CUSTODY! smash.gif

I will miss the group and the event. But someday, I will be challenging 6Freak with my SIX. He just gets a break for a bit longer! (You all should know he needs to be afraid of his little brother)

Thanks for allowing me to delay my answer. But, I am working on family right now. I hope to have an influence on my kids to catch the 914 bug! I have given them a ride in my dad's SIX and they were grinning ear to ear. I explained to them that's what I am working on.......they can't wait for me to pick them up from school in mine when it's done. That's the best motivation over winning an AutoX or COTM award! IMHO

Thanks Fellas: remember beer is always easier going down than back up!!!

For those of you that are able, ( tranz not in car, or car not needing it before the clinic) to figure out what parts you may need, I recommend you pull the stack beforehand. Instructions on doing that (for the side shifter) are in my rebuild link below. You can post pics here and I can Dx your parts needs.

Posted by: PanelBilly Aug 11 2009, 08:04 PM

Is the Doctor in?

When I pulled the shift support off the o ring broke in half. Is that something you can bring or do I need to order it. I think its part no 999 701 359 40

Also this bearing was bad. It came out of the rear of the case when I first pulled it apart. I think its the axel needle bearing cage. Can you provide it? I did find the little rollers so I know they're not floating around in the case.
Attached Image

Third, Do I need to replace these seals in both sides since I pulled the final drive shafts off?
Attached Image

Posted by: Dr Evil Aug 11 2009, 08:50 PM

Billy,
The seal kit has all the seals. I can give you that bearing, but I bet one of the donor boxes has one to give as well. Where was it located? Beneath the gear or on top of it?

Posted by: PanelBilly Aug 11 2009, 09:02 PM

Part 999 202 001 00 and there's only one. This is the axel needle bearing not the pair of needle bearings that go inside the reverse gear

Posted by: Larouex Aug 11 2009, 09:30 PM

BTW, I have a tailshift donor tranny, should I bring it? I have no idea what is wrong with it if anything as the car was not running when I took it in.

Posted by: Jakeodoule Aug 11 2009, 11:39 PM

Should be no problem, How long? You'll more than likely have to unhook after parking. Only have room for one or two that can reach power hookup. Otherwise have flat and level room for three or four others at least. But anything longer than about 25 or 30 will be tight if your not good at backing...

Doc:
I have only one first gear slider & it's just decent. It would seem that this is the most abused/NLA bit. I hope you have a plan.

I just pulled apart a trans. The
slider was toast tho the dog teeth were good but the syncro band was flat.....go figure. The pinion shaft intermediate plate bearing was in multiple pieces.

Posted by: Dr Evil Aug 17 2009, 03:16 PM

JP,
1st is generally shot. I posted earlier on in this long thread that if people wanted to get 1st sliders for this clinic I had a source for $350. Dog teeth from 2-5 can be made to work in 1st so I have that handled with plenty of spares. I also have some pretty decent 1st sliders for $100 ea. These save some money and will work great for a long time after a rebuild and class. smile.gif

For bands, you can buy new from me if you like for $75, or used ones that are in great shape for $35.

Is a one day rebuild realistic for a suspected 2nd gear synchro issue? I know it's a little hard to predict until I get the box open. There's a 10k back up here in Tacoma on Sunday I'm interested in running with the family.

If you're sure that is all it is, it's a one day job easily.

Today a buddy brough his trans over thinking his first gear syncro/dog teeth/slider was bad....and it was and so was his 2nd gear syncro and that slider was shakey. During disassemly his mainshaft intermediate bearing fell out in about 20 pieces.....sigh..

So, the real answer to your question is maybe. biggrin.gif

No see'em the dogteeth/silder teeth on 1st gear. THE high wear area.
With the shafts thru the intermediate plate I can't tell if the bearings are bad.
4th gear looks good.....but most are.

To your question: I hab no idea. biggrin.gif

Your 1st gear dog teeth look pretty good(the last pic, Billy). If the slider is in the same shape you're good to go.....tho The syncro looks kinda flat. These pics make it tough to give a definate answer due to light reflection. There is a wear limit on syncros. I'll bring a mic if doc doesn't have one....or even if he does. biggrin.gif

2nd looks like it is toasted, 3rd looks pretty injured as well. Slider possible, teeth definitely, synchro band definitely. 1st is not clear enough to know, The teeth look ok, but we can do better. Bring the whole box if you are going to reseal the case. I will show you how and I have some good tools to help you.

Posted by: Dr Evil Aug 30 2009, 08:40 PM

Billy, I cant tell much from your pics. Ya'll need to take off the 1st gear slider (one 13mm bolt then slide it up and off) and take pics of the wear areas to get an idea of the condition.

Posted by: my928s4 Aug 30 2009, 08:46 PM

Yikes, OK will bring check book !!

My gearbox casing looks like crap, spent a LOT of time cleaning and degreasing but probably worth getting is blasted before the event. Any advice on removing the diff?

On a Friday, traffic will be heavy from 3:00 until 6:30 trying to get into the Couve. Either leave earlier, or drive slower. At 4PM on a Friday, Battleground is two hours from Portland.

First of all that wild cherry crack was some funny $hit lol-2.gif

As far as the rush hour stuff what they said. I would hold off going thru Portland till 6:30 or 7. & to be on the safe side. You come up earlier you are welcome to stop by my place to relax for a bit. I live just east of Corvallis on hwy 34. I am 8 miles from I5. I am up for leaving my place sometime after 6:15. That would put us thru Portland at a decent time. Still get us there early enough to see what we are doing setting up camp or whatever.

Morgan we will definately touch base the week leading up to it

Looks like I am rebuilding my gear box just in time.
When I drained the oil a sweet pretty new House of Colors paint color came out....
"Por$che bronze Gold Metalic With 100 dollar flakes." Part #$$$-$$$

What do you think Dr.??
(Disregard the Moth, he flew into the oil after it was drained) He couldn't resist the pretty gold color. Th stuff on the rag is like a paste almost.
The little chunks came out with the oil....
Is that just a bushing or something cheap?? lol-2.gif
It was shifting nice with the only problems were a whine in 4th and a few leaks.....

Traffic is like any city. Some days you fly up 205 at 5pm others you don't
I would take 205 and not I-5 Coming from the south. I live about 1 hour from the 205/I-5 interchange thats in moderate traffic. I drive it at least once a week at rush hour. Rarely does it take more than an hour and an half. Its really not all that bad unless shit major crap goes down.

I can think of only 2 places that have that much brass. The speedo drive screw gear (not likely) and one type of mainshaft intermediate plate bearing cage (bloody likely). The finely ground texture does not bode well for the rest of the works.

Posted by: Jakeodoule Sep 1 2009, 11:47 PM

The speedo drive is stripped... Leaks bad and is broken....
I guess I'll know next week... I may have to drink to numb the pain... drunk.gif

I would bet your input bearing is toast as that is the cage you are seeing in that pic. The speedo drive is made of the same color material. I have a drive if you want it. Let me know, I'll hook you up.

Posted by: Jakeodoule Sep 2 2009, 09:45 AM

I would say everyone just bring what you want to drink/eat. If we want to go together on a big meal thats cool too. It would be easier to cook and serve than 10 or 15 sep meals. Somebody mention RIBS? I just don't have time to organize it and shop for all the stuff. I am tight with time next week as I will be out of town till wed night. As I mentioned before I have no delivery of any food here at the house. There will be a gas grill/micro/oven for use anytime your hungry. I have plenty of fridge/freezer space for food and we'll just keep the beer/pop in coolers on ice. If you have a good sized cooler maybe bring it with a bag of ice. My wife and I are tea drinkers, So we only have a small coffee maker in the MH. anyone is welcome to use it but it only makes about 4 cups... If your a Coffee addict/snob (I know a few of you are coming from Seattle) you may want to bring your setup. There is a little store 2 miles away and box stores about 8 miles. So if we need reinforcements it won't be too much trouble. Well just send one of the lackeys thats just watching.

Is the count on the 1st page of this thread accurate Dr.?

Oh yea, I have a cool little HO slot car setup. If you have any cars, bring em.

Posted by: Dr Evil Sep 2 2009, 09:56 AM

Yup, the count is accurate so far as I know wink.gif

I dont drink coffee either. I cant bring food so someone needs to feed me biggrin.gif

Posted by: my928s4 Sep 2 2009, 10:21 AM

I will be coming down Fri eve, hopefully start heading out about 3.

If someone wanted to go organize some food for the group and we split the cost I think that would be a neat idea rather than us all bringing in packed coolers or taking trips down the road all the time. Just a thought ... I would do it if I was local.

Really looking forward to this event if my box needs more attention than I thought smile.gif

Get me a hint. What is the slider?" Does anyone have a photo of their tranny showing the view that he wants to see?

Posted by: Dr Evil Sep 4 2009, 10:30 AM

The slider is the thing that slides up and down and selects 1st or reverse. There is a fork attached to the shift rod that retains it. Take the 13mm bolt out of the fork and slide the slider and fork off together and take a pic of the underside where the pointy teeth interface with the pointy teeth on the gear.

Todd, which ever is closest, your place or Battleground, is probably best. I have no preference.

I'll get in touch about the shopping list.

1st and 2nd synchro bands are toast, 1st slider is barely passable in the pic, I have better used ones. 2nd teeth look bad. 1st teeth can be replaced. By the looks of the 2nd band and teeth I would estimate that your slider ont he 2nd side is poo as well.
-2x synchro bands
-1x 1st slider
-1x 2- slider

If I try and pull the two shafts apart I would say there is play, does not feel tight.

What do I have to take apart to show a pic of the bearing? Looking at the exploded diagram it shows a bearing in both input and output shaft.

More than about 1/16" play is too much. You can pnly get a pic of the input bearing under 1st gear (the small one). The rest will require disassembly so dont bother. You most likely need an input shaft bearing. Its good others are bringing core boxes to part as I think I may run out of parts smile.gif The whole PNW will be shifting like a dream after this!

I would say the area by my house is not really for younger riders. Most of the trails round here are close to expert. I ride my beta trials bike on a lot of them. They just lead off into the woods. for miles. I don't have any trails on my property.
Unless someone went with him to show him which trails to take, he could easily find himself at the bottom of a mean rocky hill....

Trailers not a problem.
See you friday.

Jake Im still planning on dragging the trailer down fri. its a 16-20' prowler if that make a diff.
Quick Q: is there anywhere to ride a moto-x bike on or near your location? Trying to determine if I should bring the son or not. He'll need to occupy himself so I was thinking Id bring his xr80 & or my xr100 to play on.

Ya, it is easy and doesnt require any extra effort if you are already rebuilding your box.

This is about the best shot I could get, not sure it shows much though.

That shot actually tells us a lot! You have the aftermarket steel caged version of that bearing. This is a great thing as they are much stronger. There has been a large increase in the incidence of broken output shaft bearings, but you need to be able to pull some parts that I will help you with to see it. No worries.

Any of you guy willing to haul my tranny and a folding table down so I can drive my new SL? I can haul a load of ribs in the car, but not the tranny and table too.

Parts are in Auburn and I need to gather up all the tranny stuff, but I could have it ready early in the week.

Posted by: Dr Evil Sep 5 2009, 04:38 PM

Dude, it is for RIBS! Please smile.gif

I've got at least 6 work stations no problem. can maybe come up with 2 or 3 more. I was just think if anybody had a good table and could bring it they should.

Posted by: my928s4 Sep 5 2009, 06:28 PM

Doing some more cleaning and came across this, me thinks this not good. When I pulled the drain plug it was more than full of shavings and I bet some of it was from here ....

Good news is the case is finally looking somewhat respectable ....

Posted by: my928s4 Sep 5 2009, 06:46 PM

Here is a pic of the case, would not believe how long it has taken to get like that .. must have leaked from every orifice for 20 years and then some underseal just to top it of.

Attached Image

Wonder if I should pick this up on the way down and see if it has a better gearbox than mine ....

The roughness in the center of the gear is normal, it is the factory way they are. The roughness of the Reverse (flat) teeth however is due to habitually grinding R wink.gif

$700 for a car. I hate you Westerners. That car would be double here or more.

Posted by: rdauenhauer Sep 7 2009, 05:15 PM

Another question: is there a benefit to using the 911.xxx.xxx 901 case w/the extra boss at the bottom (ala tail shift) vs the 914. case ?

Posted by: Dr Evil Sep 7 2009, 05:47 PM

No, none at all. It may actually be a detriment as the vent is in the wrong spot and might interfere with placement in a 914.

Drained both boxes & pressure washed them. They cleaned up pretty darn good. I did notice my box for my LE has had the tranny ears welded back on. I'd like to replace it with one that hasn't been broken if there is an extra there. I am bringing a spare tranny for parts. It has the rear cone but is broken by the speedo hole. So looking for one spare tail cone for a side shifter.

Everything is ready to go. Spare tranny apart in a box. "H" gear is in a box in the box. Foldup table is ready. Now I just need to coordinate with anyone wanting to caravan up friday night biggrin.gif

Are we still looking to start at 0930 Saturday? I think I'll head down from Tacoma Saturday a.m. (Friday night commitment).

Do ya think we have enough cores? The carnage from the teardowns makes me a teeny bit concerned. I really want a rebuilt box when I'm done. Hope it's just a syncro, but the pictures of other peoples boxes makes me think that's optimistic.

I'll be coming down in the Passat, not a 914, but will haul a table and tools and the tranny biggrin.gif .

Ditto to Friday...I'll probably only be there all day Saturday (starting school year is a pain, need Sunday for prep).

Will I finish? confused24.gif Don't know...don't really remember what problems the magic box has! Not the important part -- getting started, understanding wtf I'm doing is.

Bringing one tranny, towels, box of vinyl gloves (large) to share, tools, table if I can scrounge one, and...beverages to share.

I don't think that will all fit into the 914...darn. Looks good weather-wise!

Posted by: Dr Evil Sep 9 2009, 12:04 AM

Scotty, you will finish. We will make it a priority.

Tools needed:
-13mm socket
-14mm socket
-wrachet
-vice grips (large is good)

Tools that are nice to have:
- Set of drifts
- Large crescent wrench
- Hammer
- Larger pin pliers

Things I will be supplying:
- Aluminum work surfaces (disposable flat cookie sheets)
- Aluminum parts wash basins (disposable roast pans)
- Brake cleaner
- Carb cleaner
- Rags
- Foul language, dirty jokes, methane, beer recycling, etc.

I was going to supply gloves, but I forgot to get them today and I am going to be out of town Wed to Thurs. If I get into town before Harbor Freight closes I will get gloves, if not I need either John to grab some or people to bring their own.

After cleaning my trani today, I found a pretty good crack on the bell housing....
I'm not sure if I sould have it welded before this weekend or wait till I get it all apart.

Our community leaders here have nothing better to do so they renamed a street on the way to my house (just last week.) so I will be resending the directions. Those coming from the north need to heed the new directions.

Should be a fun weekend. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone.

I need to know how many are bringing motorhomes/camping trailers..... And a estimate of time of arrival
While I should have enough parking for all the cars. I don't have a lot of level parking. So I need to have an idea ahead of time. I would request anyone with an RV to stop at the bottom of the driveway, and walk up to see where we are going to put you. Its not a problem to get RV's up the drive. It just that you should look at it and plan out where your parking and turning around...... Those with cars go to the top of the driveway and we'll unload your stuff and show you where to park.

Larouexuyx,
Drifts are metal rods that come in various sizes to punch out pins and such. Harbor Freight sells sets for cheap that you can abuse and toss smile.gif

Posted by: Jakeodoule Sep 10 2009, 09:39 PM

Those with Motorhome's or trailers PLEASE don't forget to stop at the bottom of driveway... Right after you pull onto the gravel. Just park and walk up. Its only like 100yards. But the parking may need planning. Those in cars just cruise up to the top. the shop is behind the house. My driveway is gravel and a little steep in one spot (very short). If you stop on that spot you will have a tough time of getting going again. So just cruise right up all the way to the top. There's lots of room. Then you'll turn around. I only tell you this because a delivery dude stopped on the little hill, couldn't get going again, then tried to back down and ended up in my pond. Took a crane to get him out. lol-2.gif It was awesome! I have enough parking, but just! and it'll be tricky to make sure the campers can get in after about 6 or 8 cars are here.
The sooner you get here with your RV the easier you'll have it. But we'll work it.
No worries!
I'm really Lucky to have a great place in the woods to throw a party like this and I can't wait to share it with everyone.
I have only one thing to ask. Please do not throw cig butts on the ground. I can't stand the fact that the world is an ashtray. Thanks.

Party On!

Very cool. I'm leaving work about 1. Still have to get those 2 tailshifts to pressure washed & drained. Then get my rig cleaned out & loaded. Didn't quite get to it last night sad.gif . My excursion will be pretty well loaded. 5 transmissions plus all my other crap.

Montoya (sorry forgot your name allready) I will see you this afternoon.

As far as seats for working. Seems like my liitle harbor freight stool doesn't sit real high. Anyone think some bar stools would be better for working on the tables?

I'm headed out to pick up the beer. I'll stop at the produce market and pick up some corn on the cob (8/$1.00). I have fixin's to make Atomic Buffalo Turds.

I'll be picking Dr. Evil up at ~7:30, and heading to Battleground VFR direct.

I am now booked on a flight that is 2 hours later...leaving at 1221 Z (19:21 EST)

Soo, I will be 2 hours later. I guess I have time to do homework now. I will be calling Todd in a sec.

Had you made the transfer with a few minutes to spare your baggage wouldn't have made the trip(SWAG).....now you have a chance with the 2 hour delay.

Have a great evening. biggrin.gif

You are going to need solvent. unless the power washer is really strong, it won't cut that grease. I learned that one the hard way.

I hope ya'll had better luck than I with getting there. The directions I got were garbage. It was a nice morning for a drive in the semi-country. There is NO 199st off SW10th.....the mileage was off to boot. Answering machines on both phones was a nice touch

If ya need parts or tools call me. 360 693 8404. I gots other things to do.

Posted by: scotty Sep 13 2009, 03:10 PM

Yeah, JP...even Google Maps had issues with the mileage.

I learned 3 important things:

  1. The first person to open their transmission finds bad news.
  2. Those little stop blocks inside your transmission aren't supposed to be in two pieces
  3. NEVER! Never stand downwind of people who've had a lot of barbecued oysters...NEVER! wacko.gif
Great stuff!

Got back around Midday, what a weekend, talk about sleep deprived.

Yesterday was a looong day but a bunch of us ended up completing the boxes, great experience and thanks to Rich and Jamie for the parts I needed.

John (Jake) you have an amazing place and thanks for putting up with all the banging, mess, beer etc ..

Mike, thanks for the help, verbal abuse and plethora of stories.

To everyone else great to put some names to faces at my first 914 event.

Now watching the F1 race in a nice comfy chair.

Check your junction between the tail cone and int plate on the top by where the ground strap goes. You should see the paper gasket there. If not, I am guessing that this one is yours and I can send it to you smile.gif

Dr. - I believe that extra was mine. Had two in my kit (four total gaskets). You handed me gaskets to use as well.

As a precaution - JAMIE - please double check the tranny I rebuilt for you.

Chris (helios) and I just returned to my shop in Anacortes. What a weekend!!!

First and foremost: THANK YOU John for being such an gracious, accommodating host and allowing a bunch of ruffians into your way-cool shop for the weekend. Personally, thanks for allowing me use of your welder and other tools needed to get my shift coupler modified so I could get home. Any time you find yourself up in my neck-o-the-woods, Mi shop, su shop!! beerchug.gif Please let your wife know that I said thanks for letting us play at your house this weekend and for putting up with all the noise.

THANK YOU Dr Evil, for everything!! Knowledge, stories, cigars, and a healthy round of BS for all biggrin.gif I really enjoyed hanging out and learning the 901. Thanks!

Thanks to all the rest that I met, the names are many and most have escaped my brain, but I never forget a face. I hope to see you all again at another gathering.

Just got home myself. Aboslutely awesome weekend piratenanner.gif . I had a blast & learned alot.

Big thanks to Dr. Evil for making the trip out & helping me so much with my box! Despite my screwing everything up & mixing gears from 2 transmissions together dry.gif (one of my spare's I pulled apart knowing we needed parts).

Huge thanks to John for putting up with all of us pray.gif

Morgan is just cool as hell for building my second box for me. Was planning to do it today but he was up to learn. The box he ended up bringing wasn't the right one so he built mine instead. Saved me alot of time. Thanks dude smile.gif

It was great meeting everyone & working all weekend with fellow 914 owners. Can't wait for the "Falling leaf tour" now drooley.gif

Hey Cory we'll have to figure out a time for you to come down. I've got the transmission for you. Come weld my suspension ear & well both be happy biggrin.gif

Its already been said, but thanks to all. John for being a great host and Dr for the teaching style (that I found to be the best part of the event). When my kids were young, I was a 4H leader and we used the learn by teaching program. The older kids taught the younger ones and they re-learned the subject over and over. It appears the style works for adults too.

Sorry I ran out Saturday night. It took me about three hours to get home to my own bed. The time past quickly as I listened to Art Bell on the radio most of the way (but on different channels).

I had so much fun that i want to think of another clinic (see Teener Tuesday)

Just wanted to add my voice to the chorus of thanks!

John, that's one hell of a place you have there and I'm not sure you ever want to give anyone really good directions. With all of your hospitality, you'd likely end up with a really large extended family camping out there.

And, to the Dr., yeah you *were* laughing at me. But it was awfully nice of you to stop laughing long enough to say you weren't. Now that's proper bedside manner!

Nate, thanks for the helping hand and the great parts deal - check's on its way.

Everyone else, thanks for the camaraderie and help (too many of you to list, since I didn't even get everyone's name). You made the whole experience worthwhile.

I love it. "You only get to know what you saw and paid attention to" and showing up is always the right thing to do. I will make sure that next time PNW Tranny Clinic is offered, I will stay, help with the BBQ and play Guitar, my bad.

Hey Guy's
I would like to see some documented repairs, teardowns replacing parts and assembly.
Not just pictures, maybe some video's like you would see on youtube.
That would be a big benfit to this site.
Thanks guy's

westgl

We were asked nicely by some very large men with no necks to sign paperwork saying we wouldn't document the process. Just kidding! Having way to much fun to do that. I was going to take notes and pictures but after awhile I figured the Doc would probably make a video to help pay his student loans off so I would just buy one then. Please make the video, I'll put the wig on for you! hahahaaaaa!

lemme see.... the video would go summin like this

Steve taking a big slurpsh of draft beer
putting it down, he grabbed a wrench, most likely a thirteen
Steve interupted, by Rich "hey steve can you help me put these gears together"
Steve..."uh sure" putting down his thirteen, knocking over the docs warm beer, spilling all over tranny innards.
Steve helps Rich with gear set assembly
Steve takes another drink
Rich helps steve with gear set assembly
Steve" how many gears do you have rich"
Rich" five"
Steve....."looks like i have a four speed, eh?"
and on and on it went....

You guys covered it, Props to John for offering up his man cave! aktion035.gif
Brother it was great meeting another bike nut and reminiscing about NW bike racing w00t.gif
Mike thanks for lifting the veil and showing the rest of us the black art of fixing the 901 I actually think I can do another one myself now. The steady stream of profane language and insults made me feel right at home wub.gif
The mass quantites of animal flesh and alchohloic brew has got me a little plugged up though stromberg.gif

Great to to see all the PNW faces some familiar & some new.

Im glad I brought a few spares...It seems that EVERYONE needs syncro's, dog teeth and especially the first gear slider. Someone with access should step up and arrange a group buy hide.gif

Hey did Marc (Mikey914) make it Sun? Or did he get lost like JP following Johns directions headbang.gif lol-2.gif
Who's hands did that Triad end up in?

TOP TEN thing I learned at PNW tranny rebuild clinic: No particular order

1. John (Jake) garage has made my garage insecure.
2. Don’t bring A Slim Fast to a Teener event unless you want ridicule (in my fridge thought it would be quick food WRONG!) headbang.gif
3. Dr. Evil knows way too much about Tranny’s (double meaning implied)
4. My car reeealy needs a paint job after sitting next to Morgan’s (mstein95)
5. If you’re Canadian bring your thick skin to the event…ehy!
6. If your car needs a paint job and body work, Dr. Evil is the ultimate Motivator!
7. Sleep is optional. Can’t even imagine if I rebuilt a tranny.
8. Dr. Evil doubles as Roger Waters. Nice guitar playing man!
9. There is no limit to the amount of meat that can be cooked on a bbq.
10. Gear selection when driving a Split Window Bus is optional.

Thanks Dr. for all your knowledge, I learned a lot!
Thanks John for sharing your amazing garage/home with us!

I have access to them through my shop supplier;

OE German.
1st/Rev Slider
P/N - 911 302 226 00

I offer these for $350 each plus $10 shipping to 914World members as long as my supplier holds their current price.

I can get any other trans part too, but with a few spare boxes around, the others will be available cheap used at the clinics.

And, I have a box waiting for me at the bus station, and one half apart on the bench, and a stack in route, and........I am a glutton.

So you made it back in one piece I hope! The question is "How many boxes in how many days"?

Doc, can you send me (of course I will pay) a trashed or garbage 1st slider so I can make a tool unless your going to make them? I'm buying an extra 901 box to rebuild myself.

Drew,
PM me and I will hook you up.

Posted by: Dr Evil Sep 24 2009, 08:33 PM

OK, I think I am finally recovered from this last week enough to post my deep thoughts on my experience in the PNW. I had a BLAST! I tried to write a little something for each one of you, but I quickly abandoned that idea as I would have too much to say and it would still be lacking. However, I do need to mention a few people particularly.
John, I am glad you are part of our community. You are a very cool individual, generous, and you have done some amazing things that you could be arrogant about if you wanted to, but that seems against your nature. You have a kick ass set up and you took great care of me for which I am eternally grateful.

Todd, thanks for opening your house up to me so I had a place to crash for my extended visit. I had a great time hanging out with you and drinking and eating and drinking and drinking and eating. Good luck in school, I know you are already enjoying it. Remember, the longest journey begins with the first step, no matter what. Your walking man.

The rest of you, I wish that I could hang with all of you often. There were so many great individuals and personalities there. If I didnt pic on you it was either that I didnt like you or that I thought you couldnt take it....and I didnt like you wink.gif

I would definitely come up to visit again if the opportunity presented it self. Thank you all for making this such a great event smile.gif grouphug.gif

Thanks for the kind words Mike.
The goofy adventures I have done pale in comparison to you becoming a Doctor.
The dedication, passion and persistence it takes to become a Doctor is an accomplishment!! Riding my motorbike around part of the world is just being lucky.
If you want to check out the photo's from our adventure they're at www.motobrothers.com

I was sorry to hear you weren't considering the NW for your internship. I could see hanging out more often. I enjoyed having a beer downtown Portland talking shit.

After spending a few days here, I think he's considering it... except that the hospital has an affirmative action program that makes it hard for an out of state white male to get in.

Hell, We could use a good ER doctor down here at SKy Lakes! They suck big time! The hospital was called "Merle West" about a year ago, They changed it for several reasons but one of the reasons had to be that people called it "Murder West". chair.gif Several people I know drive to "Medford" (about an hour) for treatment.
