This will happen at Leamon's Garage on Sept 19-20 (Sat/Sun). The details are below
The important stuff ( clarified 7/20):
*If you bring one or more gear boxes for rebuild then the cost is $300
*Spectating is free and you can ask questions (but will have to wear a thong on the out side of your pants so we know you are freeloading )
*The cost includes: gloves, rags, cleaners, parts trays, aluminum baking sheets for parts cleaning spots, sarcasm, foul language (when no kids around), etc.
*New parts area available through me ( I will beat any suppliers prices, let me know). Seal kits area available before hand for $40
*People are encouraged to bring cores to part out as people will potentially need more parts than I will have.
*The clinic is 2 full days and I will work as long as you do. I usually start at 0930 and go until after 2200 if necessary.
*PM me if you are going to be a paying guest and make sure to tell me which clinic you are going to attend.
*DRAIN your gear box before the event!
*CLEAN the outside of it a little. Not spotless, but enough to keep if from crapping up the place

What about MidCal ???
Mid cal = nor cal (even though it is in the middle). Check the master thread and you will see that only RobW spoke up. It is still possible, but I didnt see the numbers and I already did a tour there in SJ. I would love to come up again if you can find the people to attend/spend.
Post made over at NARP
I would be glad to help you out Doc.
What is involved in a Rebuild clinic?
As some may recall, we did this in Jan08 at my place in San Jose. While the weather sucked, the event was great. Mike did a great job and there were dozens of folks crammed into my garage to avoid the rain.
This is well worth the time and effort. Great learning from an expert, meeting folks and getting some really good work done to the car.
T
im down to watch...
no transmission to fix (there better not be any going out anytime soon either ), but would like to see the process and meet more teeners
Oh ya, I bring all the special tools for you all to use as well Seal kits can be purchased ahead of time for $40 ea.
Depending on the number of "takers" I could also host one.
-Aaron
Tempting...
Count me in, I have a side shift that needs rebuilding, and a tail shift which can be used for parts.
Great! Glad we talked you into it!
I believe my only real issue is first gear, but this is a great opportunity to figure out what's going on in my gearbox. Should I plan on purchasing synchros before, or will you have those available along with the used parts you will be bringing?
i'm down to come watch, i have a transmission that probably needs rebuilding but i cant afford it. hopefully i'll learn how to open one up and check to see if its good myself.
I will be happy to host with my girls Judy supplying Costco food and drinks.
Have Pool, small garage, tools, and Compressor & No trans to work on. But we have parking.
Forgot its SOCAL I have a BBQ. His name is Joe.
Will I have to pay?
Attached image(s)
Is PNW out now or did I miss something?
Lea: Your place is perfect for this. I think that Mikie's only prob would be the bed. He has a place to sleep here.
What is the date?
I'm be interested in another lesson Mike.
Leamon, your place looks like a great spot.
can i host it and get a free admission! =D i've got umm parking space for like 10 cars + street parking and a bbq grill. no indoor garage tho =/
PNW, awesome. Portland or Seattle?
I will host the BBQ for all us if you are in Seattle.
Larouex
Please post to the PNW transmission clinic thread
I'm unavailable from 9/10 through 9/20.
Are we going to do two days again?
The last weekend in September would be great
Ya, Kelly. It really needs to be 2 days or it is too much like a sweat shop.
Ya Trev,
is there any interest in the bay area again? I havent heard much.
Sept sounds good to me or even mid or late August...As long as it's on the weekend and I know ahead of time.
Mike, I have great shifting 901 but want to add an H gear for my V8 914 for highway cruising. I have the gear already. Is there anything I need to pickup before? Will we be able to purchase gasket sets on site as needed?
Yup, seal kits will be available for order before hand. All parts will be available before hand, actually. I can get most anything for less.
I am looking for Sept also.
By the way gloves, rags, cleaners, parts trays, aluminum baking sheets for parts cleaning spots, sarcasm, foul language (when no kids around), etc. are all included with the price of admission for those actually rebuilding the gear boxes.
For those of you definitely paying to rebuild your box, please PM me so I can get a list and plan accordingly.
Thanks
I'm in for SoCal. I just sent a PM asking where and when I send my $300.00.
The good news is that I don't drink any more. The bad news is that I don't drink any less either... But I'm up for bringing a bottle of Tres Generations or Patron to the party.
Eric Read
Joe loves Cazadores
So far the PNW people have their shit together and have booked my first available date on the weekend of Sept 12th. It would work out best if we could do this the following weekend of the 19th so I dont have to fly back and forth a bunch of times.
Will the weekend of Sept 19 work for ya'll?
Works for me Mikie. Now lets see if Leamon can do it.
I'm in for the So-Cal event. Couldn't find the master thread. Sent you a PM.
Rob S
Hey Rob, here is the original thread
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=96574
First post is now updated with pertinent info to help alleviate any confusion
I have updates the first post with lists of students and spectators. If you are not on a list or on the wrong list PM me and let me know.
Just found this on Craig's List - side shift tranny and tailshaft(mounts) look OK. $125.00. Good for class, eh? Go to craig's list/ southern CA (socal)/inland empire area. Search porshe 914. Or sale-g7jrn-1227589105@craigslist.org
If a worthless link appears or disappears; it's not my fault. I have an ignorant computor.
Sure Mike we can host. I am in my car at work but will look for details later. Sept, is good i saw 18-19 somewhere right?????? typing from cell.
Right on! Yes, that is the weekend.
If you do it the last week of sept. that would work better for me
Sorry man, PNW is the 12th, so SoCal needs to be the weekend after so I dont have to fly back and forth or stay away from home too long.
I have a couple more to rebuild, so you can crayola me in.
Done
Sept 19th is the weekend Just FYI. I will amend the 1st post later.
Wow, you guys are a much smaller group than the 20+ up at the PNW
I updated the list and added some extra rules at the bottom to help to keep the host shop clean
I have an idea of trying to get a group buy for 1st sliders since currently the cheapest ones are at Pelican for $435 and most of you will need them I bet.
Maybe AA can hook us up?
This one is the weekend of Sept 19th. What do you mean, "another clinic coming up"?
Hi Mike, I am considering to attend the clinic. I have a working tailshifter and another unknown donor tailshifter. The tailshifter shifts fine. But I have the stirring the pot feel. I have tried replacing the bushings, except for the black balls.
I would like to convert to side shifter. Would you have parts for sale to convert and does it cost extra for the conversion on top of the $300. Does it take the whole weekend. Wife and daddy duties.
Thanks
Ted
Converting the gear box is no more difficult and requires no more time than a regular rebuild You just need the parts. Since you have another tail shifter you will need a side donor or to buy the parts from me or someone. The tail donor will likely have two good synchros in it and a good slider or two
OK folks, we are getting to the part where you start sending me your money (buying a plane ticket soon). I have a PM in with our host, Leamon and await a call with him when he gets time so we can finalize the details. At this time I am wanting those of you who are paying to contact me for my address and payment instructions. I would like to get this handled ASAP since I ma buying my ticket to Portland for that clinic in the next few days
Any questions?
Bring beer for the host? And can you use a thong as the first slider?
Rob
BTW, if you are interested in buying used parts off of me be aware it is first come first served so PM me and I will get you set up. We can talk about the problems you are having and decide what parts you need. Once they are gone, though, they are gone.
If you have sent me your tranz issues already but wish to use some used part please re send the info regarding such.
I am still hosting no problem on my end. I don’t have my secretary that has been with me for 7 years she has been out of the office with a brain aneurisms?. So I am doing the work of two and its not fun 12-hour days but still better than she is, prayers please. But no worries if you don’t here from me call anytime. Anyone needing info / directions 818 2 six six 7 seven 74.
Mike,
PM sent on payment and parts needed for clinic
Mark
Hi Mike.
Sunday 20th no can do, but I need to learn. Can we rebuild a box on the 19th only or do I need to looky loo that day and get what is needed to do the job later? I can help with the Leamon BBQ or something to assist with $$, even if no rebuild in one day.
Breathlessly waiting your thoughts .
Mike M
Mike, We can get you taken care of. No worries. If I have to work late to answer all of your questions then so be it
So, here is a dilemma that may work out for some of ya'll. I will be done in Portland after Sun....I dont know what the hell I am going to do with myself for the week between clinics. I would gladly come down early in the week to hang out and work on cars if there were a place for me to stay Give me ideas.
Sorry if i am missing the obvious but where is Leamon's, can i get an address?
Ok. I will PM anyone coming to the event the address. Looking forward to having all of you over as always. BBQ should be fun. Anyone as fare as I am concerned is welcomed to stop by & hang, have some eats, Jump in the pool, Whatever its a 914 weekend. So lets make it a blast. So for refferance I live in Tujunga 5 mins from Pasadena. The 210 fry and the Glendale 2 fry are both 2 mins away. LOOK UP THE INTERSECTION OF FOOTHILL AND TUJUNGA CANYON
See you all soon. Or call 818 two six six 7774.
Happy Motoring.
This is my home so I will not post my address I am sure you all understand.
Who is picking me up? Joe Joe?
Also, if I come out Thurs is there anything to do Thurs and Fri?
Hey Mike, I'll be on vacation. So my time is your time.
714 EIGHT MILLION FOUR HUNDRED SEVENTY EIGHT THOUSEND AND TWO.
Awesome! I am going to kick it up in Portland with Todd Enlund for a few days and then plan on coming down to SoCal early to hang with Joe It will be good to see some old friends and make some new ones
Mike, I might come down with three 901 trannies and a 915.....they have just have been sitting in the shed. They can be used for parts, or whatver.....PM me....
Minor problem, it's my 17th wedding anniversary.....
PM sent
Alright you nut jobs I purchased the tickets. No turning back now!
I arrive at LAX on Sept 16 and leave the 21.
Updated first post with new payees I also just dropped some serious coin on stainless nuts and washers for all of the rebuilds so far I have 500 of each with 25 per box.
Mike is it possible he got trapped in the box he shipped you and hasn't been able to respond?
Wrong thread, Tod
Its listed in the thread, I dont know the exact location. I can get you the parts you need if you PM me and sign up in time. If you wait too long I will not be able to get the parts in time.
Hello all here you go I see some are looking for more detailed directions Please PM me here or Heeltoe914@aol.com or call 818 two 66 seven seven 74.. But for reff, Foothill Blvd and Tujunga Cyn, In Tujunga thats 1 min from the location. Zip is 91042 off the 210 fry. lowell exit.
The last tech session we had at my home we had about 30 folks all 914 & such. What a blast we had and we learned to be careful about just posting a address on the net.
What happened when you posted the address???
Who is Ted Lui? Please contact me
Hello, PM you my contact info.
For those of you that are able, ( tranz not in car, or car not needing it before the clinic) to figure out what parts you may need, I recommend you pull the stack beforehand. Instructions on doing that (for the side shifter) are in my rebuild link below. You can post pics here and I can Dx your parts needs.
I am thinking of removing the gear stack with the gearbox in the car and just removing the exhaust, valance and rear bumper. Is this possible or am I asking for trouble? .....
BTW I will definitely need a gasket set with o-ring for the sideshift GB .....
Yes it is possible. Click on the rebuild link below for links to a how to article.
However, you will likely do well to reseal your whole case since you will be getting a whole kit. It is not hard to remove the tranny.
Went looking for the dates and had to go all the way to page 6!
Dude, its the first line in the first post
DR. do you do the ring & pinion set up also? I need the whole mess done a complete assy?
bernbomb 914
Not at the clinic, Bernie. That takes too much time away from the stock rebuilds. I would need you to send me your box to do it.
I'm a spectator. Is there a list of refreshments to bring or is Judy doing everything?
Thanks

Hey Doc, I just recalled my speedo angle drive probably needs a new o ring and seal while I am doing everything else. Is this something you can supply or do you have a recommendation where we can find them?
I have several sportomatic trans that contain the H gear should I bring them along?
Bernie Thomas
are you going to have any spare time out here? you once said you had some days to kill
Bernie
I will be in town the Wed night before the clinic. I am staying at Joe Sharp's
DR Evil would you like to come to Temecula and do a special trans on thursday
c 1st, h 2nd, hrev 5th I have a lot of gears that need a good home. We have several sportomatics that have differant ratios.
Bernie
Bernie,
I am expecting to be helping Jim Hoyland on Thurs or Fri. The best way for me to do your box is if Joe is cool with you bring it over and me doing it there.
thats good. need directions, email bernbomb914@verizon.net for time and place
Looking at the Red Rocks thread I see that Joe is supposedly going there on the the weekend that the clinic is happening. I am not sure if this will effect my housing and transport, but I sent Joe a PM.
Confusion averted, all is well and I will be chilling with Joe
Will the Dr. have seal kits on hand?
I'm ready...bump
Update: Well its been a long last few days of dealing with the fires. But I wont to thank some of you guys that where so generous in offering to help me evacuate cars and other property as needed. Alls good now and the event is only days away so see you all soon.
We are thinking of having a donation food & BBQ going all day both days so we expect to have drinks and such But BYOB, (I don’t drink) but your more than welcome to. Also there is a POOL so feel free to dive in and to stay cool. Bring your favorite CDs.
My lady also welcomes any of your wife’s or girlfriends to hang out with, as she will be dealing with food on her own. Should be a great event.
Awesome! Glad things are better.
Glad your home was safe Leamon !!!
BTW. If anyone is bringing any side shift cores. I need a tail cone / rear cover to complete my side shift conversion. Please PM with a price or something.
Thank you in Advance
See you all there.
Ted
Ted, I have a stack of them. Why didnt you ask??? PM me.
Mike,
I was out of town last week and didn't get your post about last day for ordering parts...anyway I'm including several pictures of my gear stack, hopefully won't need any parts although the pinon gear doesn't look so red hot.

WOW! I cant tell much from the pics as far as sliders and such, but your pinion is far beyond gone. I have NEVER seen one that bad. The bearing at the end of the pinion is toast as well. Please tell me this was a donor and not the one you were planning on rebuilding. You need to source a different box to rebuild as that one is done. Sorry
The chance of you finding another in that shape is very slim. Dont feel too bad, there should be some parts that are usable out of it and that will save you $$ in the long run. Someone had to really do some ignoring to make the box end up like that.
Add me to the list.. I will be spectating on Saturday, unless my trans blows up between now and then.. I won't be wearing a thong over my head, but let me know if you would like me to bring some snacks or brewskies so I don't feel so guilty!!
OK - We're in the last few days before the transmission clinic. I've paid my fee, purchased my spare parts. So how do I get an address for this event???
My thanks
Eric Read
Eric,
Read the middle of the post. You can e-mail Heeltoe914 or PM. See you there.
+2 Me and Wes will be there spectating.
I also have a sideshift trans and 2 tailshift trans pulled from parts cars, condition unknown, Sideshift trans has only 93,000 miles. Sideshift for 150, tailshift for 100. OBO If anyone is interested let me know and I will bring them along.
+3 on the directions too.... been a while since I've been there.
Mike, is going through two boxes a one day or two day event? I'm trying to figureout whether I need a motel for Sat. night. Regardless, I have a 4 1/2 hour drive and am trying to figure the best plan.
Dr. are you thinking the tranny festivities to start at 8:00 or so Sat. morning??
Are we all pitching some cash in for food or??
Time depends on hours, not days. We started about 9-10am on Sat and I finally called it quits at midnight. All but 4 people were done the first day. The next day we started about 10-11am and were done by 3pm. Start times are best if later in the morning for many reasons; Joe's place is about 1 hour away (that is where I am staying), I am not a morning person, and I will work late with no problem.
If we can do 10am start that would kick ass for me
Update; 9-14-09 7pm
Thanks everyone for all the offers to bring food to the upcoming event. My plan is to have enough food & drinks (Soda and water) for lunch both Sat, & Sun 22 people. Still BYOB and bring your swim trucks if you wont to swim in the logon. All food & drinks are donation friendly see the box.
Saturday: Chicken like stuff maybe wings and veggie platter, fruit, chips.
Sunday: Burgers, Dogs, some sides from Costco. Lots of fruit both days.
Both mornings croissants, fruit and OJ maybe some eggs off the grill can happen.
If the event dose go into the dinner hour we can order Pizza or?????? .
Suggestion are welcomed. I should be shopping on Wednesday or Thursday night.
If you have a Picture CD you would like to share bring it along
Lets get a time set here I am a early bird 5;30 type, I have to hope for 9-10am??. Going to late into the night is not neighbor friendly.
Our you guys will show up and I will have you working on cars until the event gets under way.
But if anyone wants to bring a sleeping bag and hang on some floor that’s cool with me.
Leamon,
There is a travel inn less than a mile from your place...will it do for an overnighter? Or is there a motel you would suggest fairly close?
I appreciate the sleeping bag offer, which I still may take you up on, but my body revolts when it doesn't get a bed...LOL. I guess I'm getting old.
How about a sofa? I have a sofa an a bed left. Oh and some carpet in another room. Bring a air mattress!
I would say Travel INN in this area is like a truck stop.
I''l be there starting 9-10am. There are less people at this clinic so we should be able to finish a bit quicker.
Leamon, i have some $$ for you for the food
Some Postal Person droped off 2 boxs yesterday.
As I just went through the PNW clinic, I would recommend taking / bringing extra syncros, dog teeth, 1st sliders, intermediate bearings, rags and alot of gloves! People will need them. For those of you have never seen the inside, get your thinking caps on it's going to be fun! Really it is! Do not be scared, The Doc can smell fear!
Gear stacks assembled
Gear stacks dis-assembled
Mike if you come across a spare "Nut Bag" send it my way
Rich,
Ill send you one when I get back home. I have spares there.
Anyone know if the transmission gasket sets include CV gaskets, and if they do how many?
They are a whopping $2.50 each from pelican. Just order some! I usually get them in 3 days
How much is it to just show up watch, learn or help?? I will not be able to drop my GB in time for this ........
I sent Evil on his way a couple hours ago...
I forgot to order a few parts... So if anybody that is coming to the clinic has a spare set of these, I would be glad to purchase them from you:
If the picture is too small, I'm looking for the A) Upper Shift Level Bushing; Thrust Spring for Gear Shift Level, and; C) Lower Shift Level Bushing.
Please PM me if you can bring this stuff with you.
My thanks
Eric Read
I am at Joe's. PM sent to Jim Hoyland and Bernie
yo doc..! sup man? i'm sort of a newbie here but not really.. anyways, i just talked to leamon over the phone and we were wondering if it's coo to video some of your sessions as someone that is a "non-thong (or dental floss..) wearing-on-the-outside-of-my-pants"...?
i mean say sum detailed processe like.. the order of certain clips, rings, seals, bearings or what have you.. just so it could serve as a good way to remember everything when i do it next time.. and oh, of course! i'll be more than happy to sign a contract with you that i'll only keep the videos to myself for my own grease monkey car wrenching hobbie purpose and not posting them online like youtube and stuff..
please let us know, thanks
Short clips here and there are fine, but I wont be posing for any as I will be running from box to box as necessary. Definitely no youtube or other posting, thanks. I am in the process of making my own how to video so any lengthy vids would kinda mess that endeavor up I look forward to seeing you there
whats up doc?
hows the weather over there??
As I understand it we need to bring beer and wear bedazzled thongs if we are free loading. I found my thong, but what kind of beer do I need to bring?
the doctor does not like IPA.
even the most expensive IPA
Hefe good
The least of your worries is the gear oil smell.
The Doc has some mean farts going on.
I mean to tell you he cleared the garage more than once.
I believe it still stinks in my shop....
Morning all. One more day. Today I plan on making up a few workstations and moving things around a little.
Anyone is more than welcomed to bring your own Beer. or hit the 7-11 that is three mins, away. Yes its going to be over 100 this weekend so brings some swim shorts 5 mins, in the pool really cools you down.
If anyone wonts to bring some 914 swap parts thay would like to sale bring wahtever you like a part or two is cool.
a few hand tools wont hurt.
If you have spare 901 boxes bring um. The 2 spare trans I brought to to the PNW meet proved valuable. If we were more organized we could have stocked the Dr. with spare consumables the crew down there will likely need.
OK, I,m here with donuts and budweiser. Do I need anything else LOL.
Leamon was/is a GREAT host for this event. Food was good and the working conditions for practically everyone (one guy had to use a shop cart,, but he was done pretty quick) was great too. Met a swell bunch of folks today. There still is Sunday if anybody wants to show up.
What a great time! I believe Doc said 17 transmissions got rebuilt...there were parts everywhere. I sure hope the one I built works We'll find out in a few days.
Leamon, thank you so much for hosting and opeing your place. Everytime I see your garage , I go home thinking how much I really don't need a living room and how nice it would be to have a few lifts.
Special thanks for all those who held my hand when it got ugly...especially Steve, Mike, Robert and Charlie...my elbow partners were life savers.
And of course, Dr. Evil! He ran the clinic just like an emergency room. I learned so much...thanks Doc.
Doc, what's the best way to store my extra 901 that I just want to hold on for a spare? Store with gear oil or dry. Make any difference if stored horizontal or vertical??
Lastly, it was great to see everyone again...and lots of new people. Mike from Arizona, it was great to get to know you. Good luck with your car and your touring of the presendential libraries.
Oh yeah...I should of brought a toothbrush to clean all those parts...becuase the Doc doesn't like grime.
man.. this dr. evil dude is actually not that evil after all. in fact he's a pretty damn nice guy after all, and a great instructor on top of that. i had a great learning experience on how my transmission works and most of all what's really going on inside of my transmission. not sure if i'm ready to rebuild one all by myself anytime soon.. but i certainly learned a great deal on how to rebuild one, and all the special tools that's required to do that job. i'm sure ppl who just came to watch had also learned sumpen as well, but there's nutting like it when you're actually doing it as you learn. it was def worth every penny of it and then sum! thank you doc dude!
and of course thank you leamon for being a great host for providing the location, as well as all the beverages, food and most of all your awesomeness!!
oh! and how could i forget joe sharp's for driving all the way up from oc to cook them tasty burgers. thank you very much as well.
what a great weekend it was. i'm very happy that i got my original 6 tranny gone through and ready to be back in the car soon. yay...
thought i share some pics i took..
ya, it was fun. great working with y'all. Here are a few pics I took as well...
Thanks Doc!!!
Observing yielded the opportunities to see all the good work and mistakes with your quick way to remedy them. The clinic was an incredible learning opportunity, meeting great people was the bonus to the event.
Gene Selger
Now that Eric has his problem (with his gear box) resolved I can post my thoughts for this event.
Leamon, thanks for opening your house to us and being such a gracious host. When this idea first came up your name was thrown in by Joe Sharp because you had the set up and because Joe said you were a hell of a nice guy. Not only is that true, but coming from Joe, another very nice guy, it carries some serious complement power. I enjoyed hanging out with you and your friends.
Joe Sharp, its always good to hang with you. Thanks for sticking around town to give me a place to stay. Anyone in the area that doesnt know Joe is seriously missing out.
The rest of you, I immensely enjoyed helping you with your rebuilds. I particularly enjoyed bailing out the late comer with the electric conversion and the recently "rebuilt" transmission that was a TURD. I am glad we could resolve that. Thank you all for making the event happen and enjoyable.
Well, I installed my rebuilt 901 with the re-geared 5th "h" gear today...and low and behold it worked beautifully. No grinding, smooth shifting, and no funny noises! I even had left over parts...LOL, then of course one of my 901s became the bone yard for many...which was cool.
I can't believe how many rpm I carved off with the new h gear--somewhere around 500-700 at 65. I like to go to the Central Coast which is a 3 hour drive. That means my engine will have turned almost 100,000 less times in one trip. Thats' got to be a big plus in the gas mileage department. I was getting 20mpg, it will be interesting to see the mileage now. With 305 lbs of torque to the rear wheels there is no lag between 4th and 5th...perfect.
