Oct 10-11!
The important stuff ( clarified 6/18):
*If you bring one or more gear boxes for rebuild then the cost is $300
*Spectating is free and you can ask questions (but will have to wear a thong on the out side of your pants so we know you are freeloading )
*The cost includes: gloves, rags, cleaners, parts trays, aluminum baking sheets for parts cleaning spots, sarcasm, foul language (when no kids around), etc.
*New parts area available through me ( I will beat any suppliers prices, let me know). Seal kits area available before hand for $40
*People are encouraged to bring cores to part out as people will potentially need more parts than I will have.
*The clinic is 2 full days and I will work as long as you do. I usually start at 0930 and go until after 2200 if necessary.
*PM me if you are going to be a paying guest and make sure to tell me which clinic you are going to attend.

I'll come, thanks for doing this.
If I'm in town, I'll be there.
And ditto the thanks!
Depending on the date, it would give me an excuse to visit my son (not the EX ), even better if you built my tranny there and I could bring it home.
T.C.
Nope, yours go under the knife very soon. I need to get these things out of my garage! I got 3 more today
I see that Mike is gonna host the Clinic, but if more people want to attend or you need more space I'd offer up some space at Aircooled Heaven for the event..
I have a presentation room for those aspects of the workshop and I doubt you could find a better environment for the class than being on the top of the mountain...
That close to me
Yes I will be in and my brother also
That would be two more 914's there.
Atlanta or Jakes would be fine.
This should be a great learning event!
Depending on the date I'd try to make it up
I hope to be there too.
Interesting offer. How far is AH from Atlanta?
Having been to AH I will say it is a fantastic place and would be a perfect place for this. We can still do it at my place. I dont mind. AH is about 1.5 to 2 hours from the ATL airport. My place is about 30 minutes from the airport.
Dr. feel free to PM me and we can talk about what you need, etc.
Mike
Let me know what you guys decide.
Dang- I would try to come up just to meet ya, Doc. My rebuild is doin just fine though so I would be just kickin around in Heaven.
Jake- I'm looking for a good 2.0 longblock for my winter project. Got anything rebuildable in the barn?
I would be interested in this. The date will be the deciding factor though. (It will also decide if I DRIVE the teener over or haul my transmission!)
That brings up a good point. Will there be facilities/time to R&R the transmission? Or would attendees need to plan to show up with a loose transmission?
Yeah, let's do it in "Heaven". I'm in either way.
Are there any places to stay near AH?
I had this great picture in my mind of a hotel parking lot with 1/2 dozen 914's up on jackstands with no transmissions in them! Then asking the hotel if we can use the shuttle van to haul 6 people and their transmissions! LOL!
Helen is a bit farther north. It's a German like village with some restaurants and lodging. There are some good roads in that area, popular biker destination. We could mix a drive in with the class.
Depending on the number of people that need a place to stay. I also have a cabin that is in Blairsville GA not all that far from AH. It is 4 bedroom, 3 bath. Its on 2 acres so if some want to camp and still have a place to bath, eat, etc. We can use that.
As long as I am free taht weekend, I'd like to attend as well. I have a 2.o that I want to rebuild this winter with internals from Jake. It would give me the opportunity to get the case/heads to him to be cleaned up.
Mark
7 Miles away from AH is the Alpine Village of Helen GA... German food, German Beer and so close to Heaven.
I would be very interested in this event. Cover the whole drivetrain in 1 spot.
Mike
If the people want it I will go there. I have no aversion to going to AH. Seems weird, though, Evil goes to Heaven
By the way gloves, rags, cleaners, parts trays, aluminum baking sheets for parts cleaning spots, sarcasm, foul language (when no kids around), etc. are all included with the price of admission for those actually rebuilding the gear boxes.
For those of you definitely paying to rebuild your box, please PM me so I can get a list and plan accordingly.
Thanks
If the timing is right and people can stay a couple more days I could do one of my tuning workshops as well..
IF you guys decide to have it here... It is up to you.
Hmmm...a Dr. Evil transmission workshop and a Jake Raby tuning workshop. Maybe it's just me, but that sounds pretty awesome!
(I just hope I have time to get my car road worthy prior to this event so I can bring it!)
That nearby cabin sounds very tempting and doable
Any idea yet when this might take place? A trip through the TN/NC/GA mountains sounds like fun!
The PNW one will be Sept 12 weekend, plan for any weekend after that Start suggesting now.
Just FYI folks, the clinic is 2 days and is working for 12 hours both days. There will not be time for grab assing in the hills until all the work is done. If those with working cars want to stop by and then show off by going for a drive, well then......Fuck you I and the others will be jealous
yer from MS, where is the weather data from?
It is looking like PNW on the 12th, trying to do SoCal on the 19th so I can stay on the same coast back to back. You guys can have after that, will that work?
Jake's place is actually better for me, but either one will do. I am pretty flexible on schedules. JoeO
I'd be interested even though Im not using a 901......sounds like fun either way
Don't worry.. There is no grab assing occurring here! If it comes here.
I have a busy September and by far the best time to be here is in October.. The weather is awesome and the leaves are at full color..
Fall in the mountains... don't forget your camera.
Ya'll decide on a place and time

Octoberfest in a German village with curvy roads near by? What the hell else could one ask for with Evil in Heaven and a lot of teener nuts.
I need votes. Who is for Atl and who is for Aircooled Heaven. Lets try to get this nailed down this week so I can plan.
Jake's in Oct. works for me.
October is goo for me also. Just not the last weekend... Halloween is one of the best holidays.
October is fine. Either location is fine with me. If the teener will do 6 hours it will do 8!
Aircooled Heaven
So far ACH has votes. I agree, not during Halloween and my 1yr wedding anniversary is the 18th so nothing around there.
I'll check the UGA Football schedule and look at the schedule for Land Speed racing as we have a new forced induction record to set with the Peanut Special... We should be cooking around 152MPH :-)
First thread is updated with pertinent info
OK, I have updated the 1st post to reflect all of those that have expressed interest. 17 total with 2 paying students and 15 spectators. I am gonna need some more paying students to make it worth while (tickets, food, lodging expenses). If you are not on the lists or on the wrong list, let me know. If you dont PM me I wont put you on the paying list as I dont want to assume
It looks like early Oct at ACH. Is this OK with everyone? Is there an airport near by I can fly into?
scott, Lots has changed here since you took those pics :-)
Scott, you can be my personal assistant.
If I am able to make it, I will be a paying student, not a spectator. Hopefully things will work out!
I even discussed it with SWMBO last night and she is 'tentatively' OK with it. So, it all depends on the car.
Scott,
Is there going to be a Rocket City Ramble in Oct?
I'm pondering a reduced ramble- scenic drives, AX only. We haven't been canvasing for prizes like last year. Rusty and the rest of last years organizers have opted out.
Stand by for last minute decisions...
I have an idea of trying to get a group buy for 1st sliders since currently the cheapest ones are at Pelican for $435 and most of you will need them I bet.
Maybe AA can hook us up?
Guys, don't forget Petit LeMans is Oct 10-11, Jake, SGB, rfuerst, and myself are usually in Atlanta that weekend.
T.C.
T.C.
Petit is September 23-26 this year.
http://roadatlanta.com/events.lasso
Thanks, I read the schedule off their header that had the date of the bike race next to Petit
T.C.
If the dates are no go for ACH then George has kindly offered up AA as a spot.
Scott, How could we combine the tranny rebuild with a ramble in N. Georgia ?
Al
I'm in for Jakes, anytime is good.
Put me down as a paying customer for a rebuild. JoeO
AA would be great if we can't schedule ACH. If you haven't seen George's 914 collection you're in for a treat.
I can't beleive I missed this thread. I am definitely interested. Maybe even for the paying part of it but I need to make a project decision regarding my transmission (ie side vs tail). If there is such a thing as a tenetive rebuild spot put me in it! I think I read the whole thread but any decision on location and final date?
No date yet. I am still waiting for the group to decide.
How about the weekend of the 10th?
It's not Halloween
It avoid's the 1 year anniversary
UGA is away in Tennessee that weekend
Not sure about the peanut special
Anyone second this or object?
Works for me. I second it.
The 10th is ok with me. Let's hear from the other paying participants and get this finalized. I still vote for AA because of the ready supply of parts, and the location. Anybody that wants to organize a North Georgia ramble, organize it seperately so we're not confusing the two events.
The 10th works for me. AA or ACH, ya'll decide and make sure the hosts are cool with the 10th.
Excellent. I have the Oct 10th marked down!!!
Hopefully AA or ACH will work. If not the fall back can be at my place.
Mike
The Octoberfest should be in full swing in Helen, GA about that time. Sounds like perfect timing.
The date is fine.
Forgive me if this question is a dumb one(or has been addressed already). Assuming we are a paying "student" does it matter if we bring a side or tail shifter.
John
OK. AA and ACH, is the 10th ok with either of you?
I just heard about this, and I want to be a paying customer!
I have MANY transmissions in Atlanta (of both types) in case somebody wants to buy one to rebuild....
I also have several sets of sideshift linkages.
This is a fantastic idea. I look forward to meeting everyone.
I was waiting to see which weekend this was going to take place in October and I guess its looking like the 10th. That being the case, I'll have to pass as a paying attendee (I really wanted to learn as I tear into one). I'll keep an eye on the thread and if it changes, I'm in.
The 10th is good for me. I guess all we need is to confirm a host. Mike, options for flights are obviously Atlanta for AA's place. I think it is about 1+ hour drive to Jake's place from the Atlanta airport, more if it is during any kind of traffic time period. If we have it at ACH, then another option may be to fly into Greenville/Spartanburg in SC. It is a little over an hour from the GSP airport to Jake's place. There used to be pretty good flights to there from Harrisburg. I am not sure if there are any more good connections, as the airlines have cut back on flights, but I thought I'd throw this out as an option to look into. If it works out that way, I can pick you up at the GSP airport. If it works out better to fly into Atlanta, I am sure we can work something out with the Atlanta people.
I am OK for either location. JoeO
Right now the plan is to drive down with Matt (plas76targa). 16hrs there and back in his stock tail shift 914 I guess I am coming along to push
so what's so funny about that?
I guess I am coming along to push
so what's so funny about that?
Have we heard from Jake or George yet? Do we have a host for the 10th?
I can't do the 10th weekend... Its fine with me if George can host the event on the 10th or if it goes back to Mike's pace as originally planned.
I think what's more important is attendance at the event and it being convenient for the attendees.. My place is very cool and has lots of benefits, but its just not conveniently located for most.
I can't do the 10th weekend...
I'll contact AA and get this started
Is there anyway to guesstimate what the average cost of parts is? I understand every transmission is different and I am certainly not trying to corner you on a number but just a ballpark expectation based on the transmissions you have done in the past.
That is totally possible. I have asked everyone that is bringing a box to tell me what their symptoms are so I can give them a best case, worst case scenario.
Pulling the tail cone and checking the 1st gear parts would be a good idea. Those are the money parts and pulling the cone is easy.
Oct 10 at AA....I need to contact George
This sounds like a hoot! I may try to make it up to observe/harass.
If anyone needs a disassembled tail shift trans with "almost everything" I've got one for free / pickup in Jax, FL.
Or if I come up, I can bring it with me.
I have initiated contact with AA, but I have not heard back. I can not consider this concrete and start accepting dues
I have yet to hear back from AA so I think it would be a good idea to come up with an alternative location I forwarded my info to George to pass onto one of his henchmen to set it all up....Bueller? Bueller?
So, where can we hold this now??
bumpity bump bump
I got the contact info for our agent inside of AA from George so things are still on without a hitch. I will be contacting him tomorrow.
For those of you that are able, ( tranz not in car, or car not needing it before the clinic) to figure out what parts you may need, I recommend you pull the stack beforehand. Instructions on doing that (for the side shifter) are in my rebuild link below. You can post pics here and I can Dx your parts needs.
I am really tempted to make it and bring 2 side shifters of unknown condition
that I need rebuilt.
I have not been monitoring too closely, is there a FL session in the works?
If it was winter, I could host one here in Melbourne but I don't know how
convenient that would be for many people (other than me ).
John
Nope, Ga is a far south as I am going. I am already booked up. So, show up
I havent had a chance to get in touch with my contact at AA yet. Maybe tomorrow if class work allows.
Let us all know when the details are worked out. JoeO
I've been tasked so this has been slipping. Let me get in touch with the contact guy.
Okey Dokey, I talked with Sean at AA and we are on.
So, those of you that are going to be builders need to PM me so I can give you the payment info.
George has been nice enough to give us breakfast and lunch for both days
I am still waiting to hear back from some of you who said you would be paying.
OK, I am in for one box maybe two, if the DR thinks this looks ok to rebuild:
A few more pictures in my 1973 restoration thread. This is the box that came
with the car, it looks surprisingly nice inside to my untrained eye. Spins freely,
gear shifters move freely.
Whatcha think?
John
Looks good so far, but I can not tell what parts you will need for 1st as they are obscured. Remove 1st slider and take pics of the teeth and the band on both the parts.
OK, will do tonight. Should I remove the 3/4 slider also?
John
No such animal as a 3-4 slider
Right! Next thing you are going to tell me is that my case of turn signal
fluid is no good...
we will have no 3-4 sliding around here, ye scoundrel!
10OCtober is firm friends?
I almost lost track of this...
Oct 10 is firm
Here is mine:
My case needs to be cleaned before i get there. Do you want us to bring everything disassembled and cleaned, or will we do that during the rebuild? (Minus the outer case)
Thanks,
Mark
Mark,
Excellent pics! It is hard to read them due to the "mud?" on everything. Disassembly is up to you if you have the tools. I will be bringing some special tools to the clinic for this. If you could clean up the stack a bit so that the wear surfaces of the synchro bands are visible that would help out a lot. Then take some more pics. So far it looks promising, but it is hard to be sure.
The list of paid students has been updated
I'm in! My car likes to grind into first and sometimes second. Hopefully I can get everything dropped this weekend and take some pics. Let me know what you want me to do to be firmed up on your list...
Thanks for coming down to the A-T-L!!!!!
-- Jason
Jason,
PM me if you are going to be a builder.
Is it to late to get in on this as a builder?
I have a 914 tail shifter that I need to rebuild and convert for installation into a VW bug. Anyone have the needed nose cone and hockey stick?
Trying to get the transmission apart. This is my first disassembly so I' sure I'm missing something simple. I've exposed all the tail end gears and am trying to remove the stack. It seems to slide up about 1/8" and then stops.
In the images above I am pointing to the gap that opens. I have seen some tutorials that suggest you have to remove the 30mm bolt at the top of the stack and disassemble that half before the whole thing slides out but most of the picks from others seem to have those gears intact. What am I missing?
thanks,
john
sorry about the poor quality of the picture. Its is a cellphone pic in the dark
ok I found Dr. Evils tutorial on how to remove the stack. but I have a few problems. First the shift console seems hoplessly stuck in it hole. I can't get it to budge. Second, when I engage 5th gear it does not seem to lock the transmission.
Any thoughts?
John
John, by not following the instructions to begin with you have jammed the shift console in the stack. You will now have to drive the roll pin out of the outer ball doodad and pull the console off leaving the selector rod in. Then you can get the selector rod out. No biggie, but I wish I had better news for you
No worries about the trouble, its not my transmission
Since it is a tail shifter, did you remove the plug on the side where the side shift console would have been. You must to this to get the stack out. You do not have the ball thing, it would be there instead of the plug. The plug is on the left side and is held in with 2 nuts.
It SHOULD just be a paper seal, but amateurs like to put sealant where it dont belong. Get a driver under the lip and pry. It must and will come out. PB blast it to release the gasket.
Finally got the cover off and this is what's inside (finally):
What do you think?
cant tell 2nd and 3rd from those pics, but it looks like a good start
Fellas, I was snoozing...
but I want on the boat. I'm in for the 10th and as a paying attendee if I can get things ready by then.
Sir Evil, I have funds standing by. I will see if I can get over to the shop and pull my engine/trans and pull the stack for photos.
I am already off for the 10th but have to find a place to stay that night too~
Hopefully coming up with my white 73 also.
What is cool about this clinic is that we are not full so late comers are fine and it is at AA so parts should be available
Well, the hell with you then
Just kidding. I dont worry about the spectators, its the paid people that I need to keep track of
Mike - reminde me, before we leave Frederick, to bring the ECC 2008 shirt that should go to "Stepup2theMike". (I believe that what's left on the list Rich L kept)
T-8 days to a 680 mile roadtrip!
PM sent.
Here is the guts of it. I've only had an issue with 1st grinding. But the other gears felt fine.
Attached image(s)
So We took ours apart today. Is there anything in particular that you would like pictures of?
Should I try to re-assemble to bring to the clinic or should I just leave it apart?
Should we bring hand tools or anything?
Jay
A few more pics of the stack. Hopfully these are clearer.
Attached image(s)
Hi...I am in...I live about a half hour from AA....From what I am reading it sounds like this is a 2 dayer...Saturday/Sunday?...I will probably make Sunday.
Can someone recommend some hotels near AutoAtlanta? It might be cool if
everyone staying in hotels picked the same one. I'd rather pay more than stay
in a questionable area.
I plan to arrive friday evening because its a 500+ mile drive.
I also plan to bring some extra parts to sell or swap, bring stuff you don't
need and lets save some shipping.
John
Well... Looks like I will be there to be a builder! I will not have time to break down the tranny so it's going to be a surprise. I am really looking forward to this. I have never worked on these before so I'm going to look like a bull in a china shop so ya'll look out for flying parts!
Can't help John with the place, I will let you know if I get something set up. May stay with family there.
Thanks for getting on the list so late Dr. Be looking forward to meeting you all
Jimmy
A few weekends back I stayed here:
Drury Inn & Suites: Marietta Area
1170 Powers Ferry PlMarietta, GA 30067-6404
It is off Cobb Pkwy, just a few miles from AA. They have good breakfast and free drinks/ hor devores in the evening. I think it was $59.00
Also, there is a Motel 6 (cheaper) and a few others there at I-75 and Cobb
Hey Doc-
What is the agenda? When will the actual clinic get underway? How long have the others lasted?
I'll probably drive over, hang out, and drive back. What time Saturday will you folks get started?
What tools should we bring with us?
Mike Moore – from the pics all looks well, but I can not see the contact surface of the 1st gear parts so I can not tell you about it. Take the 1st gear fork off (one 13mm bolt and it slides off) and take pics of the teeth on the slider and the dog teeth on the gear.
Jay – see the pics I am requesting of Mike. Take pics of all the contact areas where the selectors touch the gear parts. I’ll make and post a pic. Leave it apart. Bring hand tools to the clinic. I will have the special ones, you will need to supply things like breaker bar, 13mm socket and wratchet, 14mm socket, etc.
Obscurity – your 2nd gear is TOAST. The dog teeth are GONE, the slider is going to be toothless and the synchro band is shiny (=bad). 1st is looking pretty rough as well. Remove it and take pics as I described in the beginning of this post for Mike.
Bag5rcg – yes 2 days, long hours.
Fourblades – extra parts are a good thing I will be getting in Fri as well with Matt.
SGB – Since I am not a morning person I like to start later in the morning, but it will depend on AA for when I can work. I will start as early as 9am, but 10 am is good as well. I tend to go until midnight on both days depending on who sticks around. At the Canada one we worked from morning until midnight because there were people there that wanted to keep working
Zimms – see reply to Jay
ALL:
Since AA has offered to feed us they need an accurate count (specify Sat, Sun or both as both days are food days). Thus, if you are in as a builder or a spectator please post so here (again) so I can get the most recent total for them.
Also, George has said that he is stocking some parts for us which is kick ass! Thus, between new at a discounted price and used at a discounted price you are all getting nicely hooked up
I will be there both days
If you have paid me you dont have to rerespond I got your $ so I have your name.
SVO, you are now accounted for.
Doc
I will be there both days as a builder and give up the money when I see ya
Jimmy
I have made a sort of group buy on the parts from one of our great suppliers and will have in stock saturday for attendees only a special deal on transmission parts new (and of course the used) But here are some part numbers and prices on the new stuff
Trans gasket kit 914 300 901 00 31.12
Syncro ring (five required) 911 302 301 06 76.70 each
1st reverse slider 911 302 226 00 399.14
2nd through 5th slider 911 302 411 10 180.95
1st gear dog teeth 911 302 241 06 140.40
2nd through 5th dog teeth 901 302 242 03 140.40
intermediate plate bearing 999 053 025 00 183.21
intermediate plate bearing 999 052 016 00 182.51
These are the latest and greatest prices. Also we are allowing everyone to stroll though the parts stacks to find any treasure they want at great prices as well.
Please come hungry. We are serving coffee juice and donuts in the morning and a sandwich chip and soda smorgasbord at lunch. Also we thought that everyone could go out that night and recount the stories.
My son and Ian and I will be there both days building. We will be paying day of.
Jay Wilson
I'll be there to watch and cook if George wants me to. I was planning to find a place we can get together on Saturday evening for a burger and a beer. I was thinking of a sports bar on Windy Hill. I'll go there tomorrow and see what accomodations they have and let us all know on this thread. Al
A few things to consider, all clinics have been different, but the one thing that has been the same is that we have been dirty at the end of the day and we have been working LATE. You will not be transmission experts at the end of this clinic as that takes a bit more practice and experience. However, you will have built your own under supervision and many of you will bring 2 or 3 and this will absolutely take all of the time available. In Canada I had 4 builders with 9 boxes and I worked until midnight each night until the last one was done. So ask your self the following:
How many trannies are you bringing?
How many MUST you have done?
How late are you willing to work?
How late is AA able to let us use the space?
Doing some due diligence on the prices offered by George (and because he asked me if these were available for less elsewhere) and he is giving us a good deal Buy new and or used with confidence. I will have some used and a small amount of new.
Ok, Took some pictures for you. I have no idea what a slider, or dog teeth, etc are so If you need something else let me know. It will be easy to take more as it's still apart. (Don't know that I could get it back together if I wanted to )
Attached image(s)
1st teeth and synchro band are poo. Let me point stuff out on your pics. Gimme a sec.
More Pictures.
Attached image(s)
Alright, lets see if I can clear this up. The parts that wear on the tranz are the parts there for friction and mating (Mmmmm). The synchro band, the slider, and the dog teeth.
Yellow is the synchro band. It needs to be rough. No shiny parts allowed.
Orange is the slider. It needs to have pointy teeth, not rounded or flat.
Green are the dog teeth. They need to be pointy like the slider teeth.
Here is 2nd gear which is a common wear point and you can see in one of the pics earlier that all 3 parts are crap now.
Here is 1st gear. I need the slider removed and the teeth photoed to be able to tell you if it is usable. Probably not, though as the synchro has a visible shiny part on it (arrowed), and the dog teeth are flattened.
Also, oil left on the parts for pics makes sharp things look dull so I need it cleaned to tell you if the bands are any good or if the teeth are any good
It all sounds really bad.
Is it? or are these normal wear parts and are expected to be replaced?
Or is it junk, Cost prohibitive to repair and we should stay home?
Nope, not bad at all. This is normal. Having a usable 1st set up is not common. I have ways to save you $$ on that stuff, though. I will have used synchro bands for $20 at the clinic, used teeth for $50 (for your 1st dog teeth) which leaves you needing a seal kit and a 1st slider. Not bad, really, and if you care for your tranny it will service you for many decades to come after the clinic.
Awesome, I was about to get depressed for a minute there. Should I try to cleanup the oil and take more pics? Doesn't sound like you need them, but no problem if you want them. See ya Saturday.
Michaelmoo, your stack looks good. I cant tell about 1st as the slider is in the way, but I would guess it will need replacing of those parts.
Wow, 26 people on the list so far (updated today)
Just confirmed that Steve Gaglione is joining us! As you all know Steve is one of the world's premier 914 enthusiasts and owns one of the rare m-471 cars He is a wealth of 914 knowledge so be sure to write down all of the questions that you would like to ask him. He will be hosting the trophy case tour.
Cool...
Is there a time the event will start on Saturday?
Dr Evil & Dr 914, I was going to go with Steve Gaglione to deliver a couple of cars, but now it looks like Janie Gaglione will be going with Steve (if she feels well enough, she just had some Dental Surgery - Get Well Janie). So I don't know if I will be there spectating or not.
T.C.
Start time on both days is 9-9:30am
Dr. Evil,
If Paul (Ury914) and TC come to spectate - can you be sure to get pictures of them with thongs on the outside of their pants?
Rob, I didnt know you swung that way. Not that there is anything wrong with that
I am a fan of BBQ. I bet it can be taken to the shop
Just thinking about the Marietta Diner and their oversize portions and those very large desserts in the display case makes my gut feel bloated
Williams Brothers for the barbecue. Two miles from here.
Question for the Doctor or those in the know.
I'm cleaning up my case in prep for this weekend. Do i need to know how many and what thickness of the gaskets between the intermediate pate and case for the pinion depth? or just how many? In other words are they all the same thickness you just vary the quantity? or do they vary in thickness also?
Um, you need to read the WHOLE post in my rebuild thread. The answers are within:
"***NOTE***
When you remove the intermediate plate you will have some gaskets between it and the case. These are of a particular thickness and need to be replaced with the same to keep the pinion shaft depth the same. Use a micrometer to measure the thickness of these (usually more than one) and keep that number handy. When you reinstall you need to measure the gaskets that come with the new kit and replace with ones that are of the same thickness."
Link is in my signature,"EvilWerks Tranny Rebuild Service and Parts (Click Here) "
Ya, I read that.
I have four paper thin gaskets and the two against the sealing surfaces are stuck. I don't know how I'm going to measure them. I was kind of Hopeing they were all the same thickness and I just had to know how many. No such luck.
Take a razor and remove a section that has not been compressed. You will be fine, I'll take care of you
What is a recommended nearby hotel? thanks, JoeO
What are the dates?
Your fucking with me, right? Its this weekend. It should be posted in the first post.
OK, its not in the first post
I second Williams Brothers BBQ. I love that place.
Also what tools do we need to bring?
We should have quite a crowd. At least ten more people said they were coming to observe. Looks like Dr. Evil will have quite and audience..
Looks like it will rain all day tomorrow, so I'll not drive my 914. Appreciate you hosting this event Doctors.
It is not going to rain tomorrow! Maybe a chance of some liquid sunshine, but I am driving my car and having it outside! The more 914s the better!
People are already starting to show up and the shop is almost ready. Everything starts at 9:30
Have Fun guys, wish I could be there.
T.C.
Matt and I arrived about an hour ago at his brothers house 20min from AA. It was a LOOOOOOOONG drive fraught with accidents, traffic jams, and no A/C. Last night we worked on Matt's car until 2:30am and we left at 6:30 this AM. No sleep. I dozed on the way here and Matt did not. I tried to drive so he could sleep but he was too busy telling me how to drive..... Its his car. This weekend some time we will have to tune up his car as it died right when we were about 1/2 mi from our destination. I got it started, but it hesitates under load unless the RPMs are up and was missing here and there. The front bearings also need to be replaced. I tasked Matt with this. Maybe a pertronix as well.
See ya'll in the AM. I am looking forward to shopping for some supplies right before the clinic.
Maybe a silly ass question...has anyone ever video taped a complete Dr Evil rebuild? I would certainly buy a copy of that! Have a great time guys...all the best with the clinic!! Wish I could be there
A video is in the making currently. Stay tuned! It will be AWESOME!
That is great news...put me in line for one! Have a great time this weekend and say hello to Paul Woodbury if he shows up. He is one of our Florida 914 brothers!!
I am working on the script right now and the idea is to get it out to as many people for a little as possible (just like my repair work)
Mike is here now and the clinic is going great. Everyone is really learning a lot and the camaraderie is great
the guys are all in the showroom and Steve Gaglione is describing all of the cars to them including the 916 the best six the last six the sportomatic six and the m-471. He is going to the four cylinder showroom next
Having some problems with pictures tonight....
Here are a few more:
Looking at Matt's car-

just part of the big crowd.
I'm sure they are still at it.
I really enjoyed meeting friends (some new, some renewed).
Many thanks to George, and of course, Dr Evil.
The rest of my pics are crap. IDK what happened, but they are even worse than the ones I posted.
It was quite a sight. The smell of tranny fluid was strong. Everyone had a real, um, patina. Mike was going from rebuild sight to rebuild sight. I kept hearing stuff like "I know what you need, I'll be right back with it".
I didn't keep track of the folks I met, so I won't attempt to screw that up, but g'luck with those rebuilds.

I think I can say that ever body had a good time and learn, it's not that hard
to rebuild the transmission. I have to give Dr Evil credit for having the Time
and Patience to help ever one who had trouble to explain how to correct install
the parts and which order they go in. It was quite a learning curve for me.
Thank you George for letting us your facility and the great prices for the
parts and Dr Evil for putting up with us.
Great time! You guys really do have some mechanical acumen and that is making things very easy. George is being an awesome host and very generous with parts and food. It is pretty cool to be able to send folks up forward for parts
Doc, your looking a little rough around the edges? You come over here all shaven and now you look like moses after coming out of the desert! What's the dealio buddy?
Zach is on the ball. It is now winter. Time for the beard.
Mike, thanks for the guidance in rebuilding my transmission. During the Saturday session, you looked like one of the ER doctors after a major accident- running from case to case. How many were being built at one time- nine or ten? You handled it well, catching our mistakes, and guiding us through the rebuild. I was also lucky and had some good tablemates who also helped me keep things straight, and loaned me tools I had forgot- especially a soft end hammer.
George, special thanks to you and the AutoAtlanta staff for the hospitality in allowing us to use your shop. In today's times, not many people would allow such a large group access to a great place like yours. Thanks also for the food and good prices on parts. JoeO
MANY thanks to Mike!....I only took a slight beating from the wife for coming home later than expected ....YOU are the best...and THANKS to George for a great venue ,hospitality and pricing! I looking forward to installing the newly built transmission in the car...
THANKS! again...
I stopped by today with my dad Al. It smelled great in the shop. Nothing like old 90W gear oil. My wife gets to smell that next week when I build a trans for the race car. Going to try a 4.8 R&P.
(From owner-of-the-last-box:) Thanks Mike and thanks George! I enjoyed the expertise and depth of knowledge you lent and soon, I will be on the road again~
Great group and great weekend- I enjoyed that much//JazonJJordan//
Looks like a good time was had by all! Sorry, I had to miss it. It was my wifes birthday.
Wow, great set of pictures Steve!
They really captured what it was like to be there.
What a great time. Big thanks to the Doc, who looks does bear more than a little
resemblance to Dr. Zoidberg in person. What a patient guy helping all these
newbies who don't know synchro rings from dog teeth.
Another big thanks to George and his staff, who really spent a lot of time and
effort getting ready and stayed all weekend supporting the event. If you have
never visited Auto Atlanta, it is really worth seeing. All the cool cars plus
thousands of parts and super knowledgable and friendly people.
Finally, thanks to all the people attending who helped me out with my trans,
loaned me tools, and took pictures while my hands were covered in oil. A
really laid back and friendly group.
John
First I’d like to say a huge thanks to George for allowing us to do this class at Automobile Atlanta. It was the perfect place for it. It was very gracious of you to let all of us take over your building for two days.
Second, Dr. Evil (Mike) was a fantastic teacher. If anyone is reading this and if he is having another class near you. Take it. But again a big thanks to Mike. I’m so glad my trans has been rebuilt to go along with my newly rebuilt engine.
Third it was great seeing new people and others that I’ve meet along the way in the Porsche world or through racing. Always great to talk cars!! And I’m sure my wife appreciated the car talk break…
I hope that Dr. Evil had a good time while he was here. I know he liked Williams brothers BBQ.
Joe no problem letting you use Thor. They still make them. www.thorhammer.com
The new ones look a little different since mine was made in the early 60’s. Funny story. I was broken into about 10 years ago and every one of my tools was stolen. Every one of my Craftsmen and Snap-On tools that dated from the 1960’s to the 1990’s were gone. The only tool they left was Thor. Maybe they were scared of its awesome power. I don’t know. But I’m glad I still have it.
I had a great time (outside of my sinus cold I had) and would love to have more classes like this in the future.
Thanks to all involved , I had a great time ! Thanks to Steve for sharing pictures of AA for all that have never been there. AL
I wish I knew who was who or was this taken at the Atlanta Mental Health Clinic?
Nice Looking car Ivory?
Had a great time!!! As already mentioned, thanks to Mike and George. One extra thing I would like to mention is thanks to the spectators. For transmission newbies like myself, who were all glassy-eyed, knee-deep in a hundred parts that were unidentifiable in the beginning, the spectators had the opportunity to move about and watch the assembly process by others and were a great help to me in between visits from the doctor. So if you go to one of Mike's clinics and are not prepared to build yourself, rest assured your help is appreciated. I'll be looking forward to getting the Dr. Evil video!
Jimmy
Ditto what Michaelmoo said - George, I appreciate you and your staff for hosting the event and graciously answering our many questions, and thank you for the floor space to work on my non-transmission related problems.
Mike (Dr Evil) and I left Atlanta area at 10 pm Sunday evening and drove all night to Frederick, MD with only one 'almost' major breakdown. We had stopped to switch drivers and 'pit stop' around 3 am west of Bristol, TN. Only to find a nice fuel leak from a ruptured line at the #3 injector. Fixed that but the car wouldn't start. Tried everything and finally settled on timing issue - moved the dizzy just enough to start and Vroom the car starts. Brought out the strobe light, checked the timing at 3500 and off we went. That little 1.7 with 50 series tires just sang at 4 grand and 80 mph. I took a picture of the offending fuel line. I'll download later.
Thanks again George and Dr Evil. It was great meeting many of you and regretfully there were a few I did NOT get a chance to chat with due to fussing with my car both days. At least as the Dr's chauffer I wasn't focused on a transmission.
Mike - Thank you for your time, patience and insight. I am looking forward to rebuilding aboother one soon.
George - Thank you for making you place home for all of us and havingrepalcements readily available.
I had a great time meeting and talking to everyone.
Mark
Mike and George,
Thanks for your patience and hospitaity! I had a blast and learned a lot. Met a bunch of fun people and saw some really nice cars. I find myself strangely excited to build another transmission. It was a very rewarding experience. Now I just need classes in body work and engine rebuilding and my car might make it back on the road
We need to organize these sorts of things more often.
John
I am very very happy that everyone had a great time but more importantly to me was the fact that I had at Automobile true fellow 914 enthusiasts who share my deep passion for the car. Guys like you justify my whole existence and the fact that I have dedicated my life to the preservation of the marque.
Yes we should do it again, the clinic went beyond the typical get together in the fact that we were all working together for a common goal.
Thank you Doc for taking your valuable weekend to lead the way, and bring us all together. Such a great group of guys with an overwhelming passion.
If anyone has an idea for a future clinic I would welcome the idea and someone to lead it (for example installation of springs and shocks, or major service, or installation of new carpet, or rebuilding of calipers, or anything that you can think of better than I.
Again thank you all for keeping the 914 alive and your deep dedication to the marque. George
I would love to have an engine clinic next ..... I'm sure allot of us have one or many engines sitting around just waiting to be rebuilt...I know I have a few
Thank you George for being a most gracious host, master technician and supplier on the spot, there and ready.
I would not have ventured unless this had come together and I understand much better the inner workings and felt the fellowship of 914ers.
Tools were shared with me and even left for me to finish my two boxes late Sunday. Several helped me taking them apart -into unknown territory and again Mike put one together right. Perfect parts were delivered by George and sage advice.
Meanwhile Matt's orange beauty was tuned, front bearings were renewed for the drive home to Maryland with Dr. Evil -Mike- as copilot 10? hrs.
Bill built two completely, I brought two -completed one and one as spare parts for now. Brian shared tools and efforts and muscle I did not have enough of.
We all scrubbed a lot, my arms were numb from the hrs of soaking -in cleaner- no doubt.
The awesome ivory gt clone returned for engine adjustments -blown engine-, several roadsters nicely completed rolled through. The tour is a museum and graveyard holds hope and despair in both hands. A lot of 914s...gave their lives...so these may live on...a few died of Trauma but most died tragically of cancer; rustoration-dēficientia. A lack of repair or care -sadly. A few from fires-
I prepose a surgical class weekend.
Day1)Rent a commercial compressor and blast registered attendees with before and after photos and video for the members to see the great progress made here.
3 blasters can run at the same time. Get down to surface to see what is really needed. Trailer the cars there over the weekend or before. George can blast some of his old cars that have been sitting or for parts if the roster is not full otherwise.
Day 2)Weld floor-longs or consoles tacked into place, then fully welded. Everything exosed could be primed and wait until further work later and completely sealed at home. This would let you prep the car in a single set, see what you have under-neath and weld it right one time by the best or yourself in one day/night. Prepare to repair in the worse scenario and have steel ready or cash ready to get it done and get them out of there. If it looks better under-neath (it seldom does-) then you are cured of cancer in one weekend. Take it home and seal it like a -insert metaphor-, and put all the little and big pieces back on it yu took off and drive the thing for 30more years. Oh yeah, after some bodywork and paint. The hardest part is over. Go strip your car now!
We would need:
1) 15- Cars in Southeast states area (or further-) that can be stripped to frame and can be placed on flat trailer.
2) 5- 914 rotisserie.
3) 1-commercial compressor 1-backup source if needed.
4) blasting media- soda probably and walnut shells.
5) 5 welders and 2 weldors that are very good to excellent. Plus supplies.
6) Naked photos of each car stripped and area's of cancer concern/We need enough consoles, engine trays and floorboards to cover every possbility that te photos indicate.
7) We need the steel indicated as needed + $ for same.
8) We need to work 5 cars at a time. Logistics planner. Moving things along.
First #1&2 are blasted.Moved to cleaning.
2nd #1 moved to Techical Eval and plan formed.
3rd #2 moved to Technical Eval an plan formed.
4th #3&4 are blasted.Moved to cleaning.
5th #3 moved Techical Eval and plan formed.
6th #4 moved Techical Eval and plan formed.
7th #5 is blasted. Moved to cleaning.
8th #5 moved Techical Eval and plan formed.
this repeats in 4 hr blocks until all are complete. 4hr+4hr+4hrs done.
Second day is similar but steps include removal by plasma cutter or other device
fitment and alignment, then tac welding and then full welding.
Car off rotisserie onto trailer again, ready to go.
Discount if -you- bring your car, gas charge by Google Maps mileage calculated.
Pick up and delivery. Discount for Rotisserie, welder or Weldor truck or trailer. Got one?
$500 plus gas cost to pic up drop off.
Steel brought can be used- discounted price from 914 suppliers as bulk buy.
I would hand over $500 to get this done once and for all. Weld my teener solid as a tree! Cancer cure requires photos demonstating car is bare a month before pickup and covered by a tarp-ready to go. Consultations given for poss expense so we can save up- schedules are signed for whoever wants to go early morn or afternoon and is contacted day to to ensure smooth progress.
This is what would have the greatest impact for those that need the most.
This is easily the cheapest way to save a 914 tothe core-when 10 of those 15 would be lost.
It will produce results that most could not match at home at any price.
It will move sales and put 15 living breathing and healthy 914s backon the road.
This would be an ideal time for paint- new wiring harness-new lights-locks-new interior-anything and everything. Dead 914s don't need parts-right?
These are are local but this is repeatable anywhere as an example.
Could we do this? Anyone-? Would this be feasable?
Excellent idea and easily done if the coordination was handled. The only problem is the space. would be great to do outside on a spring day. We could CERTAINLY handle the welding on the cars and the piecing of the new parts.
Sounds like something Jason could set up and coordinate!!!!
If those 914s just outside the garage are sales candidate's- they are real posibilities, a great way to buy a 914, stripped to the shell and restored (as practical) by you the buyer and then taken home to be completed.
I have two I woul consider right now- the yellow 916 clone and blue-red hooded one for my nephew.
You are right, as I paced it off last weekend, we would need that space for doing this. But remember- We are working only 5 at time so the completed cars can stack in your block-wall area and 5in the shop eans only 5 outside at most.
You actually have room on a weekend if the shop was empty of projects.
No problem. Even easier with those other cars moved alone as they occupy 15 spots at least and some have not moved for a while. Be nice to sell a few and renew them at the same time- Putting a few more on the road in good condition.
Just a thought, but as I said- their is enough room already in the block area and inside and just outside the garage. You have 4 candidate's in the blocked area alone that were stacking up...(haha)..we can certainly do it.
Spring sounds good- if we run out of registered slots we can have another clinic.
I will need two slots if we can do it for $500 a restored car. I have two cars but might have two more by then. I can deliver a photo confirming it is stripped bare a month before the clinic and I have a truck and wood floored trailer that I can deliver my shell on- so I am applying for a discount as the car does not have to b picked up by th clinic or returned afterward.
I can also loan a 90amp flux wire welder and helmet and two compressors with trimmers an cutoff wheels and die grinders. I have a light commercial blaster with built in vacume to greatly reduce all dust and reclaims 85% of the reuseable media cutting that cost by 3/4+ to "sandblast" (not sand-). These are a few of the items I can contribute to the group to help everyone along.
I would like to choke out the procrastinators here and repeat, if you register for this I will pick up your car and return it too. So many will never come because it is just too difficult. Solved. However- if you deliver it early- there would be a discount refunded. You can make this cheap, down to buying relacement panels and the remaining fee to get ths done at the clinic, if we rent less gear because you bring more gear- everything costs less- of course. It is passed on to those members that contributed-costing them less. Details are -not- formed. How much who what- is not determined yet.
We have to start with the first (15 cars) registered atendees.
I just took the first two slots- now there is 13 slots left.
This will develope this week if there is interest.
It seems at least several months off at least-likely as George said- in the spring possibly.
It will likely be a weekend clinic of real work but still fun and relaxed overall.
I would like to see a BB grill and picnic in the works to keep costs down and food and drinks ready each day. Anyone got a BBQ grill? We would need a couple.
When we are finished we should have 15 structurally restored 914s back to the community. You could sell them as project cars after that. They go for $200-$600 and not parted out yet. If parted, every one of those shells are free then, but instead we let them go to the crusher. Only because we lack a clinic like this - what a differrence! It's the right thing to do...and a tasty way to do it...
IF offered as a clinic to fix your cancer hellhole and whatever you have, it is picked up on a trailer an returned to you after you strip it over the weekend and get it welded by you or a better welder-member; is that worth $500 + parts. It was going to cost those parts anyway- one way or another. So what is gettng it done- done right, done now worth? delivered and returned + gas?
Good suggestion, I would like one too- I would commit to this as I have 4 engines that I would like to rebuild too.
I think I am finally recovered from this ordeal. What a drive!
First, thanks to George and all at AA for hosting us, feeding us, and being available to help Matt fix up his car so that drive home was better.
Seeing the GT40 was pretty awe inspiring. That car wreaks of sex
Being able to hang at AA was a treat as well. Who would have thunk it.
We had a great bunch of people, without a doubt.
The drive home seemed to have a touch of the divine involved. Matt has the times a little of and is missing some key points. We left at about 10pm from his brothers house. About 2:30-3am I pulled over at a gas station as I was getting sleepy and thirsty. When Matt tried to start the car there was no joy. WTF! So I open the cover and smell gas. I found the #3 injector hose had split and was leaking fuel all over the passenger side. I took a section of hose from the supply line and replaced #3. Then we tried to start it and still nothing. After futzing around with the engine I found that the dizzy had spun as far as it could CCW! OK, so I busted out the timing light and set the timing to the mark Matt had placed on the front rim of hte fan. It started up and off we went......then I felt that it was not running right as it was knocking under light load so I had Matt pull off at the next exit (Bristol, TN). I double checked the timing to only then be told that the white mark was the wrong mark and that I should be looking for the faint red mark (I was tired, Matt didn't tell me that the white mark he made was wrong, cut me some slack). So, I re-adjusted the timing and we were on our way with out any further issues. The drive beat me to death. When the car wouldnt start originally I was barely able to hold a screwdriver. I hate to imagine what would have happened if the timing would not have slipped causing me to look in the engine bay to find the fuel leak.
Good to meet you Donald- Jordan here~
Donald, that sounds great- a great story and what- this is all about;
A SouthEast clinic event to pick up 914 Cancer victims to blast them to bare metal, inspect them, weld them and reprotect them (finally) for a single weekend of member work, camaraderie and pooled talents and tools- welders, compressors, grinders and such.
Hosted in the spring at AutoAtlanta by George lending super tech support and advice and any sheet metal replacement panels or any other parts you might need to resurrect your 914 and get it back on the road in a few months...
I will count you in as:
#3- Attendee Donald's Black 1974 LE Bumblebee (Memphis-TN)
Myself as #2- Attendee Jordan's Red 1973 1.7 (Augusta-GA) and
again as #1- Attendee Jordan's White 1973 1.7 (Augusta-GA).
We will develope details as we go along and post a pic board of the coming cars as well. Glad to have you aboard- We will have to move this very soon to an opening thread also. -Jordan
The SouthEast 914 Cancer Clinic spring 2010' (SE9CC'10) gathers speed....
That now leaves;
15 slots (Jordan)
14 slots (Jordan)
13 slots (Donald)
12 slots left...
I'd be in for the body work clinic / thrash for welding or painting.
I would say you will need a team of workers for each car and use that to limit the
number of cars you try to do. Like maybe have 4 people per car or you will never
get it finished in 2 or 3 days. You could tailor this to what work each car needs.
Just longs is easy, floors are easy, if you have to do inner wheel houses and
suspension mounts that takes longer.
Rent a major, portable soda blaster or it will take forever to do the blasting.
Maybe George has some favorite wrecks he'd like saved that he can offer for sale?
John
*Moved to it's own thread- in GARAGE and under SouthEast 914 Cancer Clinic spring 2010* Thanks everyone- looks like we are a -Go!- already * -Jordan
***Hi John- I also moved this to a thread under GARAGE and transfered everything over*under SouthEast 914 Cancer Clinic spring 2010***
John, I would agree, good points- which is why I felt it would have to be well sorted out and George noted all needed parts need to be available.
I was planning a timed dry run later to see what can be done, and 15 shells was the minimum to make it worthwhile generally.
PM me with ideas on methods to keep everything flowing, if you would. You seem to have a knack for this and I would enjoy your input in planning.
What we really seem to need are actual times with our proposed setup capacity that day too; I have blasted an entire car in a half hour but also have drug through one -for days. This is why I suggested the commercial unit that is used for commercial (like steel bridge work) jobs like jack hammer work too. Comes on a trailer moving 120 cfm or much more. You can run 3 blasters at the same time- no problem. They rent for a few hundred a day.
I will put you down also, thanks for the suggestion too. You are quite right or things won't flow easily. -Jordan
