914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Dr.Evil's tranny clinic in CANADA

Posted by: Mark Henry Aug 7 2009, 08:54 AM

If you need a transmission rebuilt now is the time! Mike (Dr. Evil) and I are planning a short notice tranny clinic in Ontario Canada.

Date and details has not yet been set so start thinking! It will be short notice, as in real soon!
We have 4 transmissions already so things are looking good!

Go to Mike's vendor thread and look at the prices and details, For us Canadians the price is a steal and did I mention he will do it at PAR!
The USD price is what you pay in Loonies!
Shipping to the USA would be the price of labour! Or more!
If you can't be here I will P/U from greyhound which is the cheapest way to ship something this size

http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=56892

If you guy's want I'll revive the Por'Volks Festival for a small 914 only show and shine and BYO BBQ (I might need some help for this) while Mike is here.

This is a one time deal.
Mike is a real Doctor now and he's going to retire from transmissions very soon.
You snooze you lose.

Start digging those dusty cores out!

BTW I'm away for the weekend, I hope to see some Canadian peeps chimming in on this when I get back!

Cheers Mark

I'll keep an eye for date and location. The transmission for my '73 2.0 is currently sitting beside the car while the restoration continues so this could work out perfect.

Posted by: Dr Evil Aug 7 2009, 02:02 PM

I cant wait. biggrin.gif

Just to make perfectly clear (in US English tongue.gif )

Cost will be $300 loonies per person that brings one or more gear boxes. Yes, $300 and you can bring as many as you can rebuild. Bring too many and dont get through them all, then you brought too many wink.gif

Spectating is free.

I love BBQ

I can come up as soon as the last weekend in Sept. The rest of Sept is booked. The 1st weekend in Oct can be available, the second is booked, the third is booked. The rest of the time is pretty open, but I will be trying to drive the bus so nicer weather is best smile.gif

Posted by: wobbletop Aug 7 2009, 03:15 PM

I'd be in for spectating. My transmission is in the car. biggrin.gif

Posted by: swl Aug 7 2009, 04:14 PM

Sounds like a great idea Mark. I've got a spare in unknown condition that I could add to the mix.

In any case it would be a good excuse for a get together and meet the legendary Doc!

Maybe have the swepco guy bring some gear oil?

Posted by: westo2 Aug 7 2009, 05:36 PM

Well, depends on where in Ontario. Southern Ontario, I would be very interested as I would be coming from Buffalo. Of course, the wife is due at the end of September, so that may complicate things as well.

Posted by: nsr-jamie Aug 8 2009, 04:24 AM

That sounds like its going to be a lot of fun! Wish I was back in Canada to join you guys.

Hey about this.... "Dr. Evil's tranny clinin in JAPAN????" Make a trip to Japan and I can set you up here at our place for free, my gearbox needs some work too sad.gif Unfortunately I have no 914 friends so it would just be me. biggrin.gif

Posted by: balljoint Aug 8 2009, 04:20 PM

Cool. I will keep watching for the date. Dr. Evil needs a passport to enter Canada though.

Posted by: Dr Evil Aug 8 2009, 04:27 PM

Dude, I threw out some dates for consideration. You all have to throw out some dates you can do that are not the ones I said area already booked blink.gif

Damn, my passport just expired, too sad.gif There is another $60 IIRC.

Posted by: balljoint Aug 8 2009, 04:45 PM

Got it.

Location: Henry Ranch, Port Hope, Ontario

Date: I will ask my wife when I am available... hide.gif

Posted by: wobbletop Aug 8 2009, 09:49 PM

Pro tip: Don't tell the guys at the border you are planning on doing any work here.

Oh, and a quick shift into 2nd from first causes a grind... worn syncro?

Edit: Last weekend in Sept and first weekend in Oct are fine with me.

Posted by: Dr Evil Aug 8 2009, 10:30 PM

Your grind could be many things, including a synchro, sliders, band, external tranny stuff that if not corrected will cause problems in the aforementioned parts wink.gif

Posted by: swl Aug 9 2009, 07:23 PM

late september/early oct both good for me. preference to late september.

Posted by: tracks914 Aug 9 2009, 07:42 PM

Very interesting, since my parts are already in the mail from the Dr.
What does the $300 cover?
Will you be bringing a good supply of spare parts?
Do we bring our own tools or will Mark have enough for everyone?

Can I drive my car down(600 miles), pull the tranny, rebuild it, install it and drive it back home in one day??? driving.gif

Posted by: Dr Evil Aug 9 2009, 09:14 PM

Doug,
The $300 is the fee for me teaching you how to rebuild your gear box. If I do it on my own it is $500 normally. You would need to bring your own tools, except for the special ones that I will bring smile.gif All you need is a 13mm socket, wratchet, 14mm socket, thats about it. wink.gif

As for you driving down, dropping, fixing, and reinstalling, I am ok with that as I can come up early on Fri if you can make it and if Mark is ok with that. Or, we can drag on into Mon. Either way is fine with me smile.gif

I see that Mark's place is 8hrs away, totally within my driving range smile.gif

Posted by: Dr Evil Aug 9 2009, 09:17 PM

I see you said one day. Yes, this is possible, but you will have to show early and leave late as problems tend to pop up. Figure 8hrs for the tranny rebuild (less if you and I hit it together) 1hr to pull the tranny, 1hr to place the tranny.

I have all the parts you need to do this.

I am psyched. Figure out which weekend I am coming and lets do this!

Posted by: tracks914 Aug 10 2009, 08:37 AM

I was kidding about the driving down and pulling in one day. I'd pull it ahead of time and drive down the night before, if I can get the time off work.
Sounds like a good time.

Posted by: tracks914 Aug 10 2009, 08:38 AM

Edit - oops hit button twice.

Posted by: Mark Henry Aug 10 2009, 12:35 PM

My shop will be open, I have tools (many doubles), can have a bunch of benches ready and have 2 acres of lawn for camping. Mike has a room ready or he can set up his camper. We'll make a weekend of it then afterwards Mike can explore at bit of the area. There is a couple of B&B's here, but hotels are 20-30min away.

Anyone in Canada who has a 914 or serious project car should be jumping all over this. I know of the semi-local guy who does them...I think his name is Ben Dover.
Get that spare box done, I know you guys are cheap and this will be as cheap as it gets! biggrin.gif

Oh ....and I'm back but quite busy.

Posted by: balljoint Aug 10 2009, 07:48 PM

Hmmm my only space box is a tail shifter, but the running car is a side shifter.....

Posted by: Dr Evil Aug 10 2009, 07:58 PM

You can convert the tail, or rebuild the stack and convert it later when you are ready. Tails are good resources for parts, too.

Doc you said 4-5, is there a maximum # you want to teach? I'm thinking my shop won't do much more than 6 guys.

Mike Galloway and myself make 2 for sure.
PM me if you want on the list.

Posted by: Dr Evil Aug 10 2009, 08:16 PM

I have fit much more into a one car garage. Dont worry about it wink.gif Rebuilding gear boxes doesnt take up much space. But, if you want to motivate people, you can always say that the first ones to speak up get the bench space and the rest get the floor....or makeshift benches wink.gif I can get some blocks and boards to make benches if necessary.
So, nope, no maximum #. If you see the PNW folks, we are up to like 11 now.

Posted by: Ian Stott Aug 11 2009, 04:55 PM

Moncton just had AC/DC and 70,000 plus attended; but you are getting Dr. Evil in your shop, giving a transmission clinic! This one upmanship has to end! Will see if I can attend, will watch this thread religiously.

C'mon Ian, it's only 12-1/2 hours from Dieppe to Kingston. That's nothing - it's like 7 or 8 for Doug just to drive down from Timmins.

You can bring the lobster! biggrin.gif Maybe some of those big Fundy ones from Alma chowtime.gif

Posted by: davep Aug 11 2009, 06:12 PM

I'm certainly considering coming. I have about six or so old boxes. Any idea as to how long it takes to go through one? What about prep work on them before I load up the van? Clean, drain of course. What about flushing (Solvent?). Loosen back cover. I'll have to dig into my stash and see what spare parts I have. A bunch of paper gaskets I think. What special tools? I think I can grab a micrometer. If nothing else, this will be a good practice session with supervision.

Posted by: Mark Henry Aug 11 2009, 07:27 PM

3 confirmed at this point. We need to start thinking dates. Doc doesn't want to be driving in the snow so I'd say before early November. Plus he has other gigs.

I'll need someone to bring a BBQ, I have an indoor grill but it's small.

Posted by: Ian Stott Aug 11 2009, 07:46 PM

Ya know the lobster idea could make for a nice touch, How do you know about the ones from Alma? My post about a good friend looking for a Ghia is actually from Alma, small world eh! Dieppe is a little farther away from Ontario than me, I live very close to Magnetic Hill could actually hear AC/DC playing Thunderstruck last Thursday when they were here rocking the Maritimes.

Firstly, Mark - I assume the Mike G you have listed is Galloway? As long as the dates work, this Mike G is there too.

Ian, my wife is from Moncton and her family is still there; Dieppe, Riverview and her sister is mayor of Hillsborough. Always Alma for lobster and sticky buns.

LOBSTER! I will definitely show up for that wink.gif

The date is either the last weekend in Sept or the 1st in Oct. Pick it and stick it.

Dave,
Pulling the stack is a good idea for seeing what you may need, but with 6 boxes you should have ample parts. You may need a 1st slider, thats about it. Dont runs solvent through the box. DO drain the boxes.

Posted by: MDG Aug 15 2009, 06:52 AM

I think the passport requirement for the CanAm border just kicked in this past January, or maybe last. It's a Homeland Security initiative - they took over border security after 9/11

PITA. The hundreds of times I've zipped back and forth across the border, but it's the world we live in these days I suppose. The old 'better to be safe than sorry' is the mantra of the times.

USA Citizens Traveling to Canada
Citizens of the United States do not need a passport or visa to enter Canada, unless they are arriving in Canada from somewhere other than the USA. They do need to have on them proof of citizenship plus photo identification, although this is not often asked for. More information for U.S. citizens crossing into Canada can be found on the Consular Information Sheet for Canada at the web site of the Bureau of Consular Affairs, of the U.S. Department of State.

Americans in particular will need to be aware that Canada has strict gun laws. Generally, all weapons without legitimate sporting or recreational use are prohibited, and guns used for hunting or competition may be brought in with a permit. (Contact below). Undeclared firearms will be confiscated, and criminal charges may be made.

For more information about going into Canada, phone the border-crossing post directly. Caribbean and Canada is an international flight, you need a passport. Mexico and US has illegal alien issues.

Canada and the US border issues... well we would have to take that over to the club or bird off-topic area, political crap, 9-11, the loss of your rights, your government telling us what to do, etc...

Canada wants your tourist dollars, if your driving, walking, on a ferry and you have valid US picture ID, then come on in! No passport required!
When you get to the border coming here you don't even go into US customs, only on the way back.
US border is not going to deny any citizen, with valid US picture ID, re-entry into the US at the Canadian border.

Canadians now need a passport to go to the USA....but we don't need one to go to Cuba biggrin.gif

Posted by: Dr Evil Aug 16 2009, 01:46 AM

ALL PERSONS traveling by land and sea outside of the United States are required to present a passport book/card, or other valid travel documents to enter or re-enter the United States.

The following summarizes information available on the Department of Homeland Security’s website:

* Effective June 1, 2009, all U.S. citizens are now required to present a passport book, passport card, or WHTI-compliant document when entering the United States.
Please Note: Children under age 16 will be able to continue crossing land and sea borders using only a U.S. birth certificate (or other form of U.S. citizenship such as a naturalization certificate.). The original birth certificate or a copy may be used. See the Department of Homeland Security's Ready, Set.. Go! for more information on the changing travel requirements.

Fucking Canuks are trying to get me stranded in the great white North! wink.gif

Posted by: Dr Evil Aug 16 2009, 01:58 AM

Clear as mud. What the hell is an "enhanced state ID?"

On June 1, 2009 all U.S. and Canadian citizens who are 16 and older traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), will be required to present a valid passport, passport card, Frequent Traveler card (NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST), Enhanced Driver's License (for residents in states that issue them) or Military ID with travel orders (see below). U.S. and Canadian citizens who are 15 years old or younger may travel with just a copy of their birth certificate, as may teens between the ages of 16-18 if they are part of an adult supervised school, religious, cultural or athletic group.

From the US folks.

On the border issue, it is the USA that requires the passport to get into, or to fly over. You might need a passport to get to Cuba if the flight takes you over US territory. The Canadian border guard may want to see a US passport so that they know you are able to return to the US without hassle.

If we are unable to find Tectyl in Canada, can you bring some up? What about Schnorr washers; I could do with 40. Perhaps some drilled bolts as well as some CV gaskets.

I was cleaning up a tranny yesterday that was traded to me. Looked like a junkyard part: the shift rod and both axle shafts were cut with a torch. One Schnorr washer was missing, and no CV gaskets. The TO bearing fork had homemade brass bushings for the bearing, and the ball cup was worn through. The clamp plate for the ball was pretty knackered, probably because the ball cup allowed too much play. The reverse switch was gutted. The shift ball cup had no sides, and the rod bushing in the console was missing (sideshift). I didn't like the look of the input shaft seal either.

Dave, Cuba wants our tourist dollars, they were advertising on the radio last winter trips to Cuba no passport required. US turns a blind eye at international "fly over" flights.
If US customs denyed a US citizen with photo ID entry at the (any) US border it would face a shit storm.
Check out some of the links in the site I listed and phone US and Canadian customs or even ask AAA if you have it..

Now it may not go so well (at the border) if you just smoked a big fatty and are sitting on a bale of Canadian mother nature smoke.gif

Is the last weekend in September, Saturday 26th, good for you and are you in?
Fee is $300 Canadian, plus if you have to buy any parts from the doc.

We can have the clinic here at my house, camping allowed or at Mike's914 (Mike Galloway) in Colbourne, ON. Mike's914 might have some core parts (cash of course).

I imagine we start early and work late so bring something for potluck and some may BYOB beerchug.gif

My wife's working and I would have to arrange babysitting, but no big deal....mommy can you do me a favor???

SWL said he is in, but I need to tell him about the new date.

Mike still had not called big Frank and Yarko (911 guys), so I'm going to kick his butt daily till he does.

I want to try and nail the date down by the end of the week, so the doc knows whats up and we can arrange to send him some funds.

Posted by: davep Sep 11 2009, 10:13 PM

I second that. However I had my roof done on Dec 10 a couple of years back, and the boys were down to their T-shirts that day, so it could be nice.

Posted by: Mark Henry Sep 21 2009, 09:04 AM

I'm totally swamped on a job and I've been and still am away (no internet) till at least Wednesday/Thursday. If the guys still want to do this on December or another date I'm still in and can take care of this on this weekend.

If it's on we need to get some cash to the doctor. Either send me a check and I'll get a MO off to the doctor or you will have to get MO to Mike directly.

My address is: Mark Henry, RR# 1, 7606, Campbellcroft, ON, L0A 1B0

I can do the clinic at my place almost anytime it's just I'm crazy busy for this week, things should be back to normal for me next week, at least I'll be home.

I can get Yarko, Mike G, and maybe one other guy.
Lock up a date and I'll get Mike G's and Yarko's cash ASAP.

Must run, hope this post made sense.
Cheers Mark

1st weekend in Dec is perfect for me, then. It gives me some time to recover from the last 10 days. It is a Sat Sun event and I will be there Fri. Since I will be driving I will be flexible on arrival and departure wink.gif

Posted by: ericread Sep 22 2009, 12:01 PM

DO IT!!! I recently attended Dr. Evil's clinic in SoCal and it was really, really worthwhile!

BTW: How are you going to have a 914 shine & show if all you attendees have removed their transmissions from their cars? idea.gif

Eric

And that is from a customer that managed to turn his box into a 4 speed; R-1-2-3 poke.gif

If you Canuks want parts, you better get your orders in or you will have to get them yourself.

The first weekend in Oct is set now as I have interviews scheduled around that plug up the rest.

Obviously, the good doctor needs to work on his bedside manner... lol2.gif

As for 4th and 5th, here is the assistance I got from the doctor:

Evil goes international in 7 days.

Posted by: wobbletop Sep 27 2009, 11:42 AM

So I am now planning to be participating instead of just watching.

What's the best way to get cash to Dr. Evil? Paypal?

I'd like to be one of those guys that bring the whole car and drop and reinstall the transmission in the same day if possible. Does that sound reasonable? Anyone else doing that?

I've finally got the shift head off the rod. Is everything going to be this difficult? smile.gif

Dr. Evil did you want to bring up that CIS as well and we can work out a price?

Hey Wobble,
Are you needing the 3.0 set up exactly? I ask because I have a 2.4 set up that I can sell, but I forgot that my Corvair engine is a 3.1 and I was going to convert it to CIS in the future. Sorry for the tease. I have way too many plans, I tend to forget why I have some things.

For payment, ya'll can just pay when you get there. Unless, I cant cross the boarder with X amount of CA loonies.

For drop and install, you will need other parts: cone screws, gaskets. I have and will bring.

I have a few seal kits on order that should be here this week, but I have not been contacted by anyone about exact parts confused24.gif

No problem. I'll keep looking. This would be for a future project for me as well. Is the 2.4 compatible with the 3.0? I would be using it to convert to megasquirt.

Or maybe I can try to get one of these...

How do I know what parts I need before I tear it down? confused24.gif

-Walter

Posted by: Dr Evil Sep 27 2009, 11:42 PM

The engine size ascribed to the CIS system is more in regards to the fuel distributor and injectors. You need to flow more fuel for a 3.0 than a 2.4. Thus, for a MS set up where you use a throttle body to meter air/fuel, and MS to run the fuel amount a 2.4 would work just fine.

For the trans, if you take it apart, you need a seal kit. That is a certain. The other parts are not sure.

Hi just got back from 3 weeks of hell...but the cash was well worth it.
Got back yesterday, almost human after 18hrs of sleep.

Is this happening October 3rd??? OR December?

I can be ready, but I need to make some calls!!!!

Posted by: Dr Evil Sep 28 2009, 10:53 AM

OCTOBER!!!!

I must yell loud enough for you canucs to hear me smile.gif I will be up there on Fri. I will PM you.

Posted by: Ian Stott Sep 28 2009, 03:23 PM

I will be watching this post from Moncton, tranny sitting on a bench just crying for me to go. I can't, and would have loved to attend and learn, and to rebuild a tranny with the Dr. himself and yes I would have brought lobster, live and delicious. All is not lost in my little world however, I will be attending a "fall drive" this Sunday, my first ever event with other Porsche's, will take lots of pics and hope to represent the 914 clan well. Those taking part in the Dr.'s clinic please pay attention!! We will be calling on you in the future for help.

Hey guys I'll be driving up Saturday morning. What is a good target time to arrive?

Mike I can only stay the day Saturday - will that be enough time to open, inspect and close? I don't think there is anything wrong with my unit but I want to get confident about opening it up should it become necessary in the future.

Posted by: Mark Henry Sep 28 2009, 06:44 PM

Ok I`m set.

Mike galloway is coming, Yarko Matkiwsky already said he`s in and I just sent him a reminder.

How many benches are needed? I have two 12' benches, I can clear cover my saw and that's a huge bench. I have a couple of portable benches and then sawhorses and 4x8' sheets of heavy particle board.

What else?
What time do we start?
Potluck or byo lunch?

Mike we have a real nice, new spare bedroom for you or if you like roughing it you can sleep in my '67bus in the (heated) shop.
When are you coming?

My shop has good light, but it might be wise to have a trouble light in your tool kits.

Directions to my house DO NOT TRUST YOUR GPS! only one has got it right so far. Use this google map change it to your start point and print it out.

I'll see what I can bring for a pot-luck.
I have to find a good spot to meet Mike in Burlington, then he can follow me up. I'm planning on taking Thurs & Friday off. Thurs to do prep, and Friday to get there early as well as to guide Mike.
Maybe I'll bring some brakes up so that we have something else to chat about. I'll have some tables of my own. I'll probably sleep in my van, so that should help out.

Posted by: Mark Henry Sep 28 2009, 07:02 PM

If Mike takes the spare room I will have an extra bed in the bus. I do have a couple of tents and air mattresses that I could pop-up but it's getting chilly....I do have arctic (-40C) sleeping bags.
couch and floor space.....

Wobble pop is OK, but I'll be finding you a place to sleep and taking your keys if you pass your/the limit.

Posted by: Dr Evil Sep 28 2009, 07:14 PM

I will be there when ever Dave is ready. Early is good for me so I have time to BS smile.gif Since we have so few people, your benches will be fine. We dont need to go over board.

Steve, we will do it in a day for you.....it will cost you extra wink.gif Just kidding.

Mark, we can start when ever. I am not a morning person so closer to 10am is my choice, but I am here for you guys so you all figure it out.

I will gladly accept the guest room smile.gif

Posted by: Mark Henry Sep 28 2009, 07:27 PM

It is BYOB, but I'll take care of the doctor. beer3.gif

What's your poison Mike?
We have most all brands, but they have a little extra kick for us cunucks.

BTW Mike when are you getting here (Friday afternoon/night?)

Posted by: Dr Evil Sep 28 2009, 07:38 PM

I meant that I wanted the bed in the guest room.

I like beer with less hops, and whiskey and scotch.

I want to get there anytime between 4-8pm.

Posted by: Mark Henry Sep 28 2009, 08:02 PM

Doc has the spare room, bus and a few couches (chesterfields) will be up for grabs.

Anyone have a portable BBQ?
I only have the small indoor BBQ and it only does about 4 people. (8 medium size burgers)

The wife is making a big pot of chilli. she will make it mild and have hot stuff on the side.

Posted by: Mark Henry Sep 28 2009, 08:37 PM

Mike

Toronto traffic can be a real bitch on a Friday night.
Hit Toronto before 2:30 pm or after 6 pm.

You will see signs for the 407/ETR toll highway, it's done by photo and they bill you $25 each way. Many Americans who don't plan to come back soon just don't pay.
It can be faster across Toronto in rush hour but you have get back on the highway 401 when it ends. Time it right and it's no faster than the 401.

Posted by: balljoint Sep 28 2009, 09:00 PM

I would like to be there as a spectator on Saturday. I do have a little portable BBQ, it uses those mini propane canisters, I could bring it along.

I'll drive up from Georgetown Saturday morning. Since I'm planning to pull the trans and reinstall I'll try to get there early. If I leave by 7am I should be there around 9am. Or is that too early?

I'll bring a sleeping bag in case we run into trouble.

If the forecast changes to nothing but rain on Saturday, I may pull the trans on Friday night and just bring it. The 914 has seen too much rain already this year.

Where can we get the recommneded trans oil in Toronto?

Best to pull it and bring it up Saturday. I don't have a lot of room once we get the guys in here. Plus it's cutting it fine, could be done but....
I'm up at 6am every day.

Georgetown is a two hour drive.

Nice dry shop, heat if we need it.

I didnt even know that I was coming through Toronto. I need to evaluate the route again. Dave is supposed to be my sherpa so when he wants to meet up and guide me I will meet him. 4 is as early as I will get there as I am not leaving before 8am. Homey dont play that.

Posted by: Dr Evil Sep 29 2009, 01:20 AM

The way my map is telling me to go is the East rout that takes 81 all the way up to 401 in CA and then West to your house. Is this not a good route? It says it is shorter and it dodges ALL of the traffic places like Buffalo and Toronto.

Posted by: Mark Henry Sep 29 2009, 07:04 AM

The route is fine.
The 401 doesn't go above/around Toronto it goes right through it. The GTA or Greater Toronto area is really several smaller cities that have grown into one big city. Going through at rush hour won't kill ya, but it could add 1/2 to 1 hour to your travel time.

If you're meeting up with Dave it should be before Toronto, he knows and will guide you. Maybe grab dinner and wait a bit or just plow through and hope traffic isn't too bad.

Kim makes a nice mild chilli, kids and her no like the hot...I like 5 alarm chilli, well maybe 4 alarm.

EVERYONE use the Google map link I posted (a few posts back) and print out my directions and phone number. Google maps is the only one that is 100% for sure correct. Honda GPS is crap, so is onstar and Magellan. Tom-tom I believe I was told is correct, but make sure it is before you leave. Mapquest is almost 10 miles (15km+) in the wrong direction.
My house is not that hard to find with directions, without them you may never find it.

Posted by: Mark Henry Sep 29 2009, 01:51 PM

East route through New York state and Kingston?
Takes longer 2-3hours I think, but it's been awhile
Way better scenery. Watch out for mule deer!

Toronto rush hour traffic can be bad, but not LA or Washington, DC bad.
If it's not rush hour you'll sail right through.

Two new cell towers not far from here.

Posted by: wobbletop Sep 29 2009, 02:11 PM

Looked at both routes via google maps. Google says they are about the same, but my vote would be through Kingston. If I could avoid it, I would rather avoid Buffalo/Hamilton/Toronto on a (potentially rainy) Friday night.

Posted by: Mark Henry Sep 29 2009, 02:17 PM

Funny thing about that route....60 years ago there used to be a car ferry service between Cobourg, On and Rochester, NY

http://www.cobourghistory.ca/ferry.htm

That google maps route is correct on this end and real easy to find. Once you turn on the last road, CT. RD. 65, it is exactly 10Km or 6.2 miles to my driveway.

Toronto guys your route is different because it's about 8Km shorter up the 115.

Since it looks like sorta nice weather on Saturday, my plan was to drive the car and drop the trans when I get there. Mark mentioned that I should try to drop the trans and just bring it, but as I have not done this before on this car I wouldn't mind at least another pair of hands helping out. If that's not preferred, I can still try to drop the trans by myself.

Is there a schedule for the Saturday? Or should I just try to be there as soon as I can so I have more time to drop it? When is everyone else arriving?

I just talked to the Swepco guy (Steve C) and he has 5 gallons of the Swepco 201 80w90 in stock. Price is $75 delivered or $60 picked up (taxes included).

I'm going to pick up a couple gallons for myself. Does anyone else want me to pick some up? Since the trans takes about 1.5 gallon, maybe I can share with someone.

Let me know as soon as possible. I'd like to pick up the oil no later than Thursday night, so please reply by Thursday morning.

Thanks,
Walter

email SWL about the swepco!
I have some (2 jugs) but I realized I need enough for my buddy's trans. Were doing a R&R (not on Saturday) on his 911 and it has to be back in by the first of next week.

Tell Steve what we're doing, he knows me and might come up for a demo.

I have no problem with an engine drop just thought it would be a super busy day for you. I will open the shop real early (I'm up by 6am) and would like that you come a bit early so your not still pulling when the Doc wants to start. I have stands and tools, but my jack looses pressure slowly.
I don't have a lift.

Posted by: Dr Evil Sep 30 2009, 05:19 PM

I dont drop the engine, I drop the trans with the engine in the car. Fast and easy.
To be a help, remove the HEs and muffler, starter, and CVs, shift rods from the tranny. The rest I can do in about 5 min.

Do you need gaskets and cone screws? I may have some exhaust hardware and gaskets, but no guarantee.

If you go back via buffalo the duty free shops (canadian side) have money exchange I believe 24hrs.

A Canada Post or bank money order in USD would also work.

That's OK for the fee, but for any parts most will only have our funny money. I can get USD but only on Saturday AM or Monday.

No summertime blues here, it fall for sure and you'll be glad I have good heat.

Off to mikes914 to pull the 911 tranny soon. I have a few errands to run, but back by noon for sure.

See ya tonight Mike!

911 tranny out, I have bit of cleaning and benches to set up. Then I have to tear into 5 transmissions, one core still in my car, only 4 bolts. Just a dummy set-up so no tin, exhaust, wires etc......

Posted by: wobbletop Oct 2 2009, 10:37 AM

Did I need to get the car on jackstands to pull the trans or can it be on ramps? IE... do I need to be able to turn the wheels to get the CV joints off?

Just wondering what to pack in the car for tools.

Posted by: Mark Henry Oct 2 2009, 02:43 PM

You need brake cleaner!
BTW If you are getting some (anyone...anyone???) get me a couple cans I'll pay you!

I have jack stands and most tools, my jack will work but it slowly losses pressure and my air ratchet has died.
You need your basic tool kit for working on your transmission.

I should have most anything else you need, the Doctor has the tranny tools.

Do you have a bbq lined up? trying to figure out how much work to strip mine to a size I can get in in the car.

The doctor is in the house!

Davep is here as well. He brought apple pie.

The small BBQ is fine, we have a big pot of chilli and bread, just need salads, maybe some burgers, snacks. There`s only 7-8 of us.

At least you got to meet my wife (who actually bought the car) and is much better company than I am anyway.

Buffalo?

I always said that was a silly place to build a city (think lots of snow).

Posted by: davep Oct 15 2009, 08:25 AM

Yeah, Buffalo really gets dumped on. But hey, 30 years ago I was driving a 914 around in a blizzard without problems even though I was one of the few on the roads. Now a Ski-Doo is even more appropriate for Buffalo.

Posted by: wobbletop Oct 29 2009, 08:58 PM

Bump.

I finally decided to look up the proper amount of gear oil for the transmission. Remember I thought I did not put enough in since it was pouring back out before I had 4 litres in it.

Looking at Haynes, it says the capacity is only 2.5L. Where the hell did I find that it was 1.5G? So since I was able to put over 3L in the transmission, should I be taking some out?

The main reason I ask is that there was some gear noise on the way home from the clinic. Initially I thought that it could have been from not enough oil. But could it be from too much oil?

If not either of those, did I screw something up during assembly that would cause more gear noise (high pitched whine) than before the clinic?

Ideas?

Posted by: Mark Henry Oct 29 2009, 09:39 PM

I thought it was more oil than I remembered!

Get it out, with the car level it should only be as high as the bottom of the top plug.
Could be the source of the whine. confused24.gif

Posted by: Dr Evil Oct 29 2009, 09:46 PM

1- Did you replace the bushing?

2- Did you adjust the shifter correctly? If maladjusted it will rub and can cause noise.

3- When did "we" try to put 1.5G in the box? I put it in until it comes out the fill hole with the box level. Didn't we do that?

4- Too much oil is not going to cause a whine sad.gif

When you say high pitch, does it depend on the speed of the wheel or RPM of the engine.
- Speed of the wheel = lower int plate bearing, diff bearings
- RPM = upper int plate bearing

Posted by: Mark Henry Oct 29 2009, 11:04 PM

I'm going to be setting the diff when I convert the 901 4 speed into a 5-speed for my bug. I'll be replacing the diff bearings as well as it's only $50pr.
I'll (or we) will look at your tranny if you like. I imagine I could call on the Doc for a 2nd opinion.

Finally got that fscking bushing in place and the shift rod through it. Not sure if it was because its a six conversion or not, but it was very difficult to insert the shift rod back into the bushing. Ended up using a heat gun to put enough heat into the bushing so the shift rod would slide in.

Shifting is more "stiff" and less sloppy. I took it for a good drive up to Bellfountain. The shift from first to second seems better... it does't grind when fast shifting. I am still having a little trouble getting into first. Just the last part of the engagement requires more force. If the car is moving (at least a little) the engagement is easier.

Overall I'm happier with the shifting.

I've decided I have close enough amount of oil in the transmission based on how much I added during the clinic. Since I've basically put the car away now, I'm not going to be bothered putting the car up on stands to check the level. If anything I think I am over the level.

I did not check the transmission noise since I was driving with the top off all day. Didn't seem to notice the noise.

I'm just hoping that bushing stays in since the forward section was reduced when the bushing was blown out the back when attempting to install the shift rod once.

Posted by: Dr Evil Nov 8 2009, 09:55 PM

Um, ya. The bushing is hard to get in and I hope it is not too buggered up as well. As for the stiffer shifting into 1st, this is common for newer or stiffer synchro bands. It goes away after a while. Your adjustment may be off as well since you would have to readjust everything after inserting the bushing.

Posted by: wobbletop Nov 8 2009, 10:24 PM

The bushing was fairly easy to get in, you just have to be inside and under the car at the same time. The shift rod afterward was the pain. I noticed that the shift rod already had all it's paint worn off at the bushing.

The symptom of the shifting easier with the car moving would still point to new synchro bands? I still need to understand how a transmission works. confused24.gif

I think the Doc is saying you still need to do fine adjustments on your shifter.

The stiffness you feel when shifting is because you repaired the tranny and it should work in.

Posted by: Dr Evil Nov 8 2009, 10:56 PM

If we replaced your 1st synchro band then it will definitely be stiff for a while.

Posted by: wobbletop Nov 8 2009, 11:30 PM

Thanks for the quick replies.

Ok, so just trying to understand... I thought synchros were for matching the gear speeds when shifting. That is, bringing the shaft speed up or down with the gear that is being selected.

But, since this problem is actually better when the car is moving (gears rotating) as opposed to stopped (no shafts moving), why would the synchros matter? I'm just trying to understand better.

Or has it got something to do with the way the bands are constructed? I know getting that snap ring on was a pain. Is that the force I am pushing against when shifting at a standstill? Note that it's only 1st that has this issue... not 2nd, etc. I remember everyone saying the inside looked pretty good except for that broken bearing.

Posted by: Dr Evil Nov 9 2009, 11:08 AM

Did we put a new band in 1st? It is harder for you to push straight on than to have a twisting motion as when the shafts are rotating. Ya dig?
