Thanks for setting this up, and thanks to Mike for doing these things. What a guy!!!
I have at least four engine stands so we can set up at least four transmissions for rebuilding. If there's more than that, we can use tables.
December, eh? Alrighty. I wont have a solid date until the interview invites for residency come in
do we have an estimate on cost? I definitely have a tranny or two that need some luvin'.
I am interested!
As for my side of things, the cost is the same $300 I charge every John, er, person. You can bring as many gear boxes as you want, but I do not guarantee that you will get all of them built, just one You can buy parts from me, but I dont know how many used parts I will have left after the other 4 clinics. I must be crazy I need at least 4 paid customers to be viable.
I am 100% in. Can we nail down a date sooner than later?
We have two that are interested and one who is 100% in... Who else wants to shift with ease? Can't beat that price! $300 bucks is less than 3 hours labor if you had this done in a transmission shop and you get the satisfaction of doing it yourself and becoming more knowledgeable...
Come on! Sign up for 901 Proctology 1 and 2! $300 and you are in!!!

Thanks for the invite over on the 912BBS. Put me down for a maybe on a rebuild - the date is the key factor. I have a soft 2'nd syncro (doesn't everyone?) that I have been living with for 9 years.
I live 10 miles from Sonoma.
I would love to attend, at least as a spectator, and I can also contribute some cash for the learning experience.
If things work out, I may even buy a gearbox for the occasion.
I have a number of core gearboxes. I'm pretty sure that in the end I'll have a spare box I'd be willing to sell, but I need to take inventory of what I have before I can commit to that. The goal was to take apart all the cores before the event so I could get enough guts together to build up two boxes. Dug has a gear stack jig (if that's what it's called) that I'm sure we could use if having an extra around would be helpful.
Hey Rob, My tranny didn't need it but I would like to come watch and learn. John
Extra jigs are helpful, sort of. It depends on how well it is done and how big it is. Most are just cut up cases and they are much bigger than they need to be
Oh ya, 912 stuff is doable as well PM me if you are a 912 person and have questions.
He had a plastic jig that I remember seeing. Something he purchased for Jerry Wood's rebuild clinic if I recall correctly.
another 912'er here. i swapped 3/4/5th gears in my 901 and did a reseal last year when i put in my type4 but would love to hang out and spectate if that option is still open.
Of course
LSD = no. Too much time, needs its own course. I can discuss it and you will understand how to do it, but we will not be doing any.
Gear swaps are easy and yes we can do them that day if you have the sets. I have a sheet of gears on my rebuild thread that Aaron Cox made. It covers everything and you can print it.
I dont understand your question about scenarios for parts?
spectator
Noun
a person viewing anything; onlooker [Latin spectare to watch]
December is always a busy time for me but I'd love to come hang out and be a spectator. I have rebuilt enough 901's over the years. I might be able to come up with a gear jig (metal OE style) and dog teeth pullers.
Jim
What about 915 gearboxes?
Definitely coming, probably as a builder. Need to look at what the first gear parts are gonna cost etc.
Jim
My Guard TB equipped 901 will be coming apart for an MSX gear swap if it doesn't exceed the parameters of the clinic...
I have a source for 1st gear sliders at $350, fyi.
915 will not be included as I will not have the tools and time to do them.
To figure out what parts you may need, I recommend you pull the stack beforehand. Instructions on doing that (for the side shifter) are in my rebuild link below. You can post pics here and I can Dx your parts needs.
What is a guard TB?
If we have a good heat source we can swap in billet plates if you have them. A bench vice is necessary for the clinic.
Guard TB = Guard Torque Biasing Differential. Kind of like LSD but better for autocrossing. Moves the torque to the wheel that isn't slipping.
Guard is a brand name. Paul Guard lives in Auburn, just up Hwy 80 from me. I might be able to coax him down to talk a bit... Doubt it though. 914 guys are notoriously cheap and the TB unit costs about $1200.00 retail...
I just want to swap in some MSX gears to make it a close ratio box.
I realized what you meant by TB after I posted, but then got busy with a call from degreeoff which, of all things, is going to have me install a TB diff for him I just woke up
I pointed him towards Guard. I like their stuff and Paul seems like a nice guy, and I love Auburn.
I am in on this event depending on what day in Dec it is scheduled!
My 6 trans has a constant wine at any speed in all gears but shifts great! It started when I took it in for a PPI and the mechanic gave it back broken! My guess is that he missed shift??
Cool, that will help if anyone needs to get 1st gear off of the main shaft.
Also, I am not available for the 15-16-17 as my wife's birthday is on the 16
X-mas is out, of course so we are looking at early Dec thus far.
I am definitely interested, my tranny has issues, and I'm clueless, but enthusiastic! It will ultimately depend on the date, but if I can make it in any way, shape or form I'll be there!
-Jerry
I am inclined to call it December 5th and 6th pending approval by the other principals involved. Mark? Mike?
A lot more interest than I anticipated. For that reason, I think we should nail down a date asap...
So, December 5th and 6th?? Mark? Mike?
Attached image(s)
Tentatively, yes. But, I need to see how the interview season is going to go. I need to get interviewed to get into a program, ya know? We can shoot for that date and I wont take payment until we get closer.
I want EM. If you have connections now is the time to use them. Otherwise, there is no way I am getting back to CA for residency, way too competitive.
I'm in McMark! Thanks for hosting what should be a really cool learning experience.
Jamie
'66 912 'euro'
i have a jig like the one on the previous page along w/ dog teeth clamp/puller for use in a press if you need me to them.
5/6 sounds tentatively good for me. Since it's after the wedding/honeymoon it's a bit beyond my radar. But AFAIK I have nothing going on that weekend.
Plus ya'll can make me a birthday cake.
Which of you has a great shifting 901? Maybe we can get Mark to talk about how to change out all of the bushings in the shift linkage... Pretty sure we can have a Rennshift car with Rennshift modified side shift linkage on display as well. You should be there.
5/6 is what I am shooting for.
5-6 should work for me!
Rob,
I am interested as an observer, I recently had the DR rebuild mine but would like to see the guts spilled out for future wear and tear
I'm pretty sure it's Mike Dr. Evil.
blackmoon (forgot your real name ) bring your car on that day and we can spend a little time looking at the wiring, if you haven't sorted it out already.
Yup, I am DR among other things
Blackmoon = Bob
That's right! Bob and I talked a bit at one of the Porsche Family Reunions.
i'm in for 5/6 as well.
I would like to spectate. Both of my trannies are freshly rebuilt by Otto's. I can bring one that has a "high performance mod" that I was instructed to do to hold it together for higher power motors. Basically longer studs that go through the intermediate plate with nuts welded to studs on the front side.
I'd be curious to see that Andy. Not sure I'm understanding correctly.
Oh ya, bring that. I love "modified" as I dont agree with most and I havent seen them all This one, I have not seen.
This thing is shaping up! Spare transmission anyone? Just because yours is working fine doesn't mean it always will... It's a 914 for gosh sakes. Wait a minute - it will break! That is why I always keep my cash rescue dog around!
Attached image(s)
Come to the NorCal Transmission Clinic with Dr. Evil - Hosted by Original Customs in Sonoma California and Sponsored by the Yopu Agency...
You will learn to rebuild your own transmission and this chick will feed you!!! NO TOUCHING THE COOK
Attached image(s)
Yeah I'll bring it. It's much easier to look at than splain.
Andy's in the house!!! Make your plans people. This is a chance to learn. I call them opportunities. If your transmission does not need a rebuild, buy one that does and learn. After this, Mike stops working on transmissions and starts suturing up suicide attempts...
Attached image(s)
My tranny is good at the moment, so I'd like to be an observer if I can make the date. If I can source a well-priced sideshift and gearswap, I'd like to participate. ('ll start looking for one now)
The 5th / 6th looks good, I'm in! Looking forward to it!
Should be fun and educational opening up your 901 and freshening her innards... Wouldn't you love to shift better? I am paraphasing a recent Grassroots Motorsports article when I say you have a better chance of finding second gear stirring your Cheerios in the morning than while driving a 914... An overstatement to be sure but you can improve on that and learn. Price of admission $300.00 to participate, free to observe.
Attached image(s)
You guys ready? Got your transmission getting out plans made? Only three months till the NorCal Dr. Evil Transmission Clinic Sponsored by Original Customs and the Yopu Agency. Be there or be like this guy...
Attached image(s)
Get your shift on! NorCal Dr. Evil Transmission Clinic at Original Customs in Sonoma! December 5 and 6... $300 to fix and learn, free to watch... Be there beeotch!!!

Lucky you--I sure wish Dr. Evil would plan a Minnesota transmission build clinic. I would love to swap my LSD from my short gear into the my stock geared transmission.
Chappy, hop on a plane to Santa Rosa airport and then I'll pick you up.
Does a 901 count as a carry on?
I am hoping Mike comes up to Minnesota for a visit. Noel is from central Minnesota farm
country, he may have to come up here sometime.
On the other hand i hope i can get out and visit, maybe 2010 WWC......
Noelle is from Minnesota? I am from Lake Elmo!
She's from Fulda.........
Noel is from San Jose, CA born and raised. Her Mom is from MN She is coming out here in a few weeks, not the other way around
I've got a sideshift 901 out of my '73 teener that I can contribute to the cause for a fair price. It includes the shifter, all linkage and the engine mount. I don't know the exact history of the box, but I got the car from my next door neighbor and he says it shifted great when he parked it 15 years ago. Either way, you could go through it at the clinic, or buy it for parts.
I live in Davis, which is on the way to Sonoma from the Central Valley. PM me with an offer if you're interested.
Geoff
Get your wrench on! 901 instruction by the evil Dr. Evil... Be there and take the word grind out of your transmission discussions and put it back in the coffee chats
Attached image(s)
The evil doctors schedule is starting to get quite full. These will be his last transmission appearances. After that you will have to attempt suicide or drive into a tree to see him. I know one guy who let a car fall on his face but Dr. Evil hadn't graduated yet. If you want to see THE Dr. Evil this is your chance! $300 to rebuild nada to watch.... Such a deal we've got for you...
Attached image(s)
Think about it! You can fix those damned synchros AND pick your gear ratio... Plenty of time to study and ferret out those proper gears for your engine... I am going with an MSX 3/4/5.
Since I am always getting crap about pictures of my car with garbage containers in the background, I thought I would show that someone else has pics of their car with garbage containers too!
Attached image(s)
Ahhh.... December in Sonoma. So relaxed... The grapes have been picked and crushed. The fermentation is taking place. This is when the feet go up and the reruns get watched.
But not for you. You will be at the Northern California Transmission Rebuild Clinic at Original Customs on December 5/6. Mark your calendar. Study your transmission dropping procedures. (drop the muffler, support the engine, drop the tranny. Most common mistake is forgetting the ground strap). See you all there!!!
Attached image(s)
Get your shift on! Dr. Evil, Northern California, 901 Nirvana!!! Ahhhh.... See you in December!
Attached image(s)
Shiftless in Rohnert Park? Is life a grind? See you at the Northern California Transmission Clinic in Sonoma!
Attached image(s)
What do we need to purchase ourselves before showing up? Does the $300 include gasket kits, hardware, etc? How often do bits like bearings need replacing?
Thanks!
You can purchase parts through me if you like. The $300 is only for the class, seal kits are $40. Bearings and such often break, but I can not tell you to buy replacements until I know more about your gear box. I do not see myself having any used stock left by Dec as I have 4 clinics ahead of this one.
PM me with your gear box symptoms.
Hey Rob, Mike, and Mark, I want to be put down for the rebuild class, I'll have a tranny by next week, so I'll need a gasket kit, tranny has no prior systems ,PO says work well when taken out. John
Be the first one on your block to sign up for the Northern California Transmission Clinic with Dr. Evil... Find out why your transmission grinds when you go from second to third and why it hurts when you pee! What could be better???
Attached image(s)
Things may seem calm on the surface but I am getting email every day from guys wondering about what gears to put in. Maybe we should start a thread on gear choices. I am going with MSX which gives me a very close ratio box. Eric Shea has an MS? with the 5th gear being some highway gear so he can climb the mountain passes he needs to to get East or West of SLC.
There are lots of gear choices and they are expressed in letters. Maybe someone can post that chart...
Attached thumbnail(s)
Here is the chart Flipped ZD is in the wrong spot on this chart, it should be between K and L.
Attached thumbnail(s)
So there you have it... The grey gears are stock 914. The numbers along the left tell you what gear that can be used for. Just follow the chart to your redline and you can see your top speed in that gear. Fun with charts! Who says being a geek isn't a blast???
Attached image(s)
By the way, someone should reproduce this as an Excel Spreadsheet putting the Flipped ZD in its correct spot so that we can enter our tire diameter. We can put it in the 914 Info Section.
Got gears? The NorCal Transmission Clinic featuring Dr. Evil is coming up in December! Tell your wife you are going Christmas shopping! That will work!!!
Attached image(s)
Want to be able to "grab" second without having to grind off a hunk of reverse? Get your 901 over to Original Customs in December for the Northern California Dr. Evil Transmission Clinic. Shift like a pro!!!
Attached image(s)
What's it going to be boys? Are you going to continue to complain about your shifting or fix it and learn something new? Make your plans to attend the Northern California Transmission Clinic with Dr. Evil! See you there...
Attached image(s)
I'm in as a spectator.... I would love to clean parts if someone wants an assistant!
Only a couple months until the Northern California Transmission Clinic with Dr. Evil... I only tell you this because it will be the last one EVER! Get your poo together and get ready because this is your last chance EVER!
Attached image(s)
Well? Do you want to be able to shift that thing? Get on down to the Northern California Dr. Evil Transmission Clinic and you will!
Attached image(s)
Is the answer a hard core no on rebuilding an LSD?
Rob, are you installing an LSD, or just rebuilding a box that already has and LSD?
Ya, which is it? If the box already has an LSD in it then that is not a problem. If you want to rebuild a stock LSD unit, we can do that to, sort of. If you want to install an LSD, that is a no.
Let's hear your plans! What problems do you have, and what do you hope to accomplish? I have a newly built 901 with stock gearing, a billet intermediate plate, a Guard TB unit that I want to put MSX 3-4-5 gears in... I have permission from the guy who built if for me I want to shift like this guy used to!!!
Attached image(s)
What's it going to be guys? Grind or go??? Be at the Northern California Dr. Evil Transmission Clinic and it will be all go for you!
Maybe you can make it shift like this one....
Attached thumbnail(s)
So Rob Ways is a but willing to be a Who is going to claim him? Anyone??? OK... Rob is with me changing my gears to MSX! He already has a 901 geared like that anyways...
I mean with Rob's help, I should be done in no time... And how bad could it turn out???
JK Rob
Attached image(s)
I just fondled my MSX gears yesterday... What? Don't laugh you'd fondle them too if you had some... You're just green with envy
Attached image(s)
Shift like this guy! See you at the NorCal Dr. Evil Transmission Clinic in Sonoma in December!!!
Attached image(s)
Don't miss your chance to find out what's on the inside of that transmission... The more you know, well... the more you know. That's not a bad thing! See you at the NorCal Transmission Clinic with Dr. Evil in Sonoma! Come on down, get a room, turn the wives loose in the valley for a little wine tasting. By the time you get back to the room Saturday night she ought to be just about right

Hey Rob, and Mike , Have you got a list of you is going to be in the clinic for December in Sonoma? would like to make sure I'm in for the special weekend for the build. Also will need a seal kit to be used, please post a list John
What could be finer than watching the 49'ers on the giant screen on McMark's shop wall while rebuilding your 901? I hope you're going to say NOT watching the 49'ers because McMark doesn't have a giant screen on the wall of his shop! But hey! You get to hang with the guys and learn a thing or three!!!
Attached image(s)
I just want to reiterate that I can not commit yet. I must see where and when my interviews are for my future. I will move them around as possible. I will have a better idea come Octoberish.
Well now you see why Dr. Evil is, well... evil. On his calendar the months all end in 'ish! Plan to attend. We will get the exact date when we do!
Attached image(s)
Psssst... Want some good shift man??? Be at McMark's Original Customs in December for the Northern California Dr. Evil Transmission Clinic!
Attached image(s)
Could someone explain these clinics to a tranny novice?? I mean i would actually have to take my tranny out right there.. no big deal but then i am stuck at the clinic until it ggoes back in.. is it a 1 day clinic..special tools? what parts are available? bring your own tranny oil and what else new cv bolts washer available and what else? is there a lift there or jacks available ?? or is this just for race guys and guys with 2 trannys and 2 cars no daily driving 914 guys.. and by daily driver i do not mean beater but i have one sweet 914 but it is my only car so when i work on it i have to get it done to drive again.. interested but do not want to be stranded or go there just to for nothing .. well maybe to watch.. is the beer for watchers.??
The transmission clinic will be pretty much a bring your transmission and leave the car home event. It will be held at McMark's shop which is in an industrial complex in Sonoma. I wouldn't leave my car there over night. It is probably safe from people wandering by as this is some very - very expensive real estate but, McMark might need parts!
Don't be an asshat and miss this opportunity. First of all, you get to meet and greet with the rest of the NorCal gang. Bag the virtual and get to the reality. Second, you get to learn the inside of your 901. Come to a better understanding. Last, you get a better shifting car out of it! Be there at the NorCal Dr. Evil Transmission Clinic!!!
Attached image(s)
Want to shift? Want to learn how to fix your transmission? Be there when the Evil Dr. Mike comes to Sonoma in December...
Attached image(s)
A recent article in Grassroots Motorsports stated "You'd have better luck finding second gear while stirring your Cheerios at breakfast than while shifting a 914". Perhaps a bit of literary excess but still, the 901 is notorious for being difficult to shift especially when it is in less than pristine maintained condition. Here is your chance to shift better. Come to the NorCal Dr. Evil Transmission Clinic in Sonoma CA in December. Leave happier!
Attached image(s)
What is your plan? I got my MSX gears out and had them examined by an expert. I need new synchros and dogteeth. Better have it handled before December. What do you need to be ready for the NorCal Dr. Evil Transmission Clinic?
Attached image(s)
Depending on the exact date, I should at least be there to observe. If Da Boss thinks it fits into the budget, I may bring the trans out of my blue car... I will have to promise her that it will shift better if I bring it, though!!
--DD
Put me down as a spectater
unless I can find someone with a good 901 gearbox & shifter they want to sell.
Thanks
westgl
Shifting... We all want to do it. Some of us can. Others drive 914's You know you have a problem. The first step is to admit that you are powerless and that that 901 box is ruining your life. The second step is to come to the NorCal Dr. Evil Transmission Clinic in December in Sonoma California... Bring your wife or girlfriend (not both, we don't need the drama) and turn them loose in wine country. Everyone wins! You shift better, she shifts better
Attached image(s)
That is also my b-day. That makes three of us. I will be there.
dug
Looks like we will be celebrating birthdays at the NorCal Transmission Clinic! I have to find a sponsor for the cake! Just kidding! See you all there at the Transmission clinic/birthday party!
Attached image(s)
Sucks to be you if you let the NorCal Dr. Evil Transmission Clinic pass you by and still have "issues" with your 901 box... Be there and life will shift smoother...
Attached image(s)
Dr Evil, when might you be able to commit to this event? It's just a few months away and I need to know if I should start tearing apart my core boxes.
Randy,
I am considering this date taken for the event as of the middle of Oct. So far I have managed to keep my interview dates to mostly within Oct, but the emergency programs have yet to send out interviews which will probably begin going out Oct 1. They are generally flexible.
Besides, it looks pretty impossible to pass this up
You're awesome! Thanks for the update. Darn it, now I need to dig out my gearboxes!
A NorCal Dr. Evil Transmission Clinic? Yup. Looks like it will happen...
Attached image(s)
See Dr. Evil before he goes off to start his career treating the injured and infirm. Be at the NorCal Dr. Evil Transmission Clinic! Meet the famous McMark and probe his brain as to why anyone would use a Mac. Leave shifting better!

Want Shift? Be at the NorCal Dr. Evil Transmission Clinic in Sonoma! If you're a sly little fuchs you can talk to McMark about that rust repair you so desperately need.

Contrary to popular belief, shift doesn't happen. You have to ask it nice... Ask yours nice at the NorCal Dr. Evil Transmission Clinic! You don't want your car to blow smoke like this because you missed a shift!!!

Meet the rest of the guys who can't find 2nd gear at the NorCal Dr. Evil Transmission Clinic...

You posted the wrong graphic a couple days ago.

Looking in Craigs List, for SF Bay area, there's a few 914 transmissions for sale from $150 and up. There always seems to be at least a couple available, always for really cheap.
Don't be late! You only have two months to gather parts and get ready to go to the NorCal Dr. Evil Transmission Clinic! I got mine! An M and an S and an X!
Attached image(s)
We have about a month and a half to go until the planned December Dr. Evil Transmission Rebuild Clinic at Original Customs in Sonoma California. In the next week or two the dates will get solidified as Dr. Evil gets his residency interviews set. Bring your wife and make a weekend of it... You will be working hard for 12 hours a day both Saturday and Sunday so the wives can go raid Napa and Sonoma on their own. This should be a fun and productive weekend...
Attached image(s)
Get ready to commit to this guys. Within a week, Dr. Evil should be able to say for sure that we have the date. Figure out what you want to do and what parts you need. I know I need synchos for my M,S,X gears and a dogtooth ring for one of them.
Attached image(s)
Just a matter of days until we have a date confirmation for the Norcal Dr. Evil Transmission Clinic. Then the fun begins! Get your money together and get ready to learn...
Attached image(s)
We are at the middle of October so Dr. Evil should be able to give us the on our dates in December soon! Be ready!!!
Attached image(s)
Hey Rob, Are we confirmed on a date yet? When do we have to come up with the money for the clinic? Will Mike send us a email or do we contact him? John
So, I got an email from one of the programs for emergency medicine saying that they (all EM programs) are not supposed to send out invites to interview until after the Dean's letters have been posted on Nov 1 I guess the Family Med folks dont need to follow the same rules as I have 5-6 interviews this month alone. As such, I will be busy with interviews (maybe) after the 1st of Nov, but I have time for this clinic.
As such, Dec 5-6, right? I'm in. For payment details PM me. I need to read through this thread again to see if any specific info is provided. If not I will make a concise post with all the info after I return from a day out with Noel (its our 1 yr anniversary today).
Happy Anniversary!
Thanks, Brett.
OK, here is the deal.
$300 per builder for as many boxes as you can build in 2 full days (usually 2).
Spectators are free and welcome. Spectators seem to learn a lot and ask very good questions. Typically, buy the end of day one the spectators are helping the builders with resolving their mistakes
Date is the 5-6 of Dec.
I will supply special tools, the rest bring normal tools with you.
I will also pay for: brake cleaner/carb cleaner, nail brushes, aluminum basins and sheets to clean and build on, gloves, rags, methane, attitude, vulgar language.
If you want to prepay for used parts (because my supplies are limited) PM me and we can talk.
If you have core transaxles to part, bring them and make some $$. We tend to do a lot of free swapping at the event, though.
If you want to buy new parts let me know and I will see what prices I can get you. Sooner is better than later so I can ship them rather than try to pack them in my suit case
I am not sure when I will close registration, if at all. The thing you lose by registering late is supplies and parts so be forewarned. Please register early!!!
Thats all for now. I think the rest of the questions are answered in the thread here.
As an aside, I am going to see about maybe including the 915 box. Dont hold your breath, but if I can I will
I should already be on the list as a builder. Glad it's happening for sure!
cheers,
dug
Dug, right now anyone who said they would be a builder is only tentative. If you are serious, I will need your clinic fees PM me if you are still in.
Alright! You heard the Dr. PM your confirmation so he can instruct you on paying your bill and any copay you might have for parts you need. Let's get this party started!!!
Don't end up like this on the side of the road!!!
Attached image(s)
So far, only one check in the mail
Spoke too soon. It looks like 3-4 more on the way
Mike....the answer is YES>
Cool. I am willing to do the drop and install for ya as well so I may need you there early or the night before
I'll be bringing two 914-6 boxes and some side shifters for parts. I was looking at various gear ratios for building a tighter/shorter box in one of the six boxes.
How about A-GA-KA-R-ZA
GA comes on the 914-6 mainshaft
KA is a ZD flipped
R is a V flipped
ZA comes in the 914-6
The shift points would be: 40-60-80-100 mph and top speed in 5th would be near 150mph which is way more than enough.
The best would be the nice tight 2nd to 3rd.
3rd to 4th would be a similar drop to the stock O-V drop.
4th to 5th would be a bit larger, but 5th is really just for cruising.
dug
I got a question...the good Dr. already rebuilt my box, however a family friend has a 912 and I'm sure his transmission needs a rebuild. How closely related are the 912 trannies to the 914?
the 911/ 912 transmissions types 901/xx & 902/xx (were used almost interchangeably) are essentially the same as the 914 transmission, and the type 911. Most of the 90z/xx transmissions are aluminum cased, but a few late 1969 are magnesium. They have somewhat different differentials than the 914 which has something closer to the 915 differential. However, the main shaft, pinion shaft and gears are essentially the same. So, Mike's clinic covers the 901, 902, 911 and 914 transmission as essentially the same box. Even the 905 sporto box is much the same.
Dug, why those ratios? What is your tq curve like?
Biohazard , a 912 box is fine unless it is form a 76 as that would be a 915 and I wont have the tool for that unless something changes between now and then.
Biohazard?
Considering you still owe me an invoice from my rebuild, you have to be nice!
I'll look into the 912 tranny and see if he wants me to rebuild it for him and I'll get added to the list.
Who's up for a little less grinding of their gears? Commit now! PM Dr. Evil and get your money on the fly! NorCal Dr. Evil Transmission Clinic is on - December 5th and 6th... Be there - or wait until you are at a full stop to down shift
Attached image(s)
I just took apart an early 911, 912 5 speed. It is considerably different. The case is the first thing you notice. It is longer from the differential to the intermediate plate. The intermediate plate is thinner so the length of the gear stack is the same. The bearings are different but may be interchangeable. I tossed them cause I had better.
The gear stack is similar. The gears and hubs are the same but the brake bands, stops and retaining ring are different. The sliders are the same. The pinion for the speedo drive is larger in diameter, so chuck that. It will cause you great grief if you try to use it. Both shafts are the same.
The differential is different. The splines for the output shafts are different.
The good news is this was A, F, M, S, X. so I used M and S for better gearing on the AX track. I used the stock ZD for an overdrive for the highway. If I trailered I would have used X. I toyed with getting a GA shaft and I still may. A is fine cause I just use it to get started and short shift to second.
Dave
There is still time and space to join us at the NorCal Dr. Evil Transmission Clinic! Get your PM in to Dr. Evil and make your arrangements to pay your copay and get any extra doodads you might need to make yours a perfect little shifter...
Attached image(s)
Rob
I think X would mean 4000 at highway speed. My engine is really happy with 3400. Steep hills I'll shift down for.
Dave
Dr. Evil,
You can count me in. Please PM me your address and I will get a check to you on Monday.
I am bringing a first gear deleted flipped H or ZD with a bearing issue, a stock with a slider fork popped out, and a supposedly used PCA owner built track box. 3 total. My goal is to put together the fast box to put back in my V8 car and a good stock street geared box to sell for profit.
Do you think this is in the realm of possibilities for a noob transaxle guy?
Ya, its possible.
Come on guys! Get your reservation made and your tuition paid! The NorCal Dr. Evil Transmission Clinic is coming to Sonoma in just over a month!
Attached image(s)
Can we please add Dr. Evil's address to post #160 so we can send money ASAP.
Thanks,
Roger
NO! I dont want my address being released to the public like that. As I stated, anyone that is going as a builder needs to PM me for my address This has been the best way in all of the other clinics.
Remember, the proceedure is to PM Dr. Evil and get his address so you can send your money. About a month to go so lets get this ironed out soon. The NorCal Dr. Evil Transmission Clinic in Sonoma California is coming soon!
Attached image(s)
One check is in
I just bought the tickets for me and the wife as well as rented a car so I need to make at least $800 to break even
JimTab is set to bring his car for a drop-fix-install.
The plan is to arrive on the 4th at about 11:30am, pick up the rental car, and bum around until Jim gets home. Then we will chill with Jim and Lynn on Fri night. On Sat morning Jim and I will take the green teen to the shop in Sonoma and get to work. Noel will be visiting family in SJ and attending to some storage unit BS.
Our flight leaves to come home on Mon at 11:55am.
I use USAA billpay. They said the soonest it could be there is early next week. The second or third I think...
"storage unit BS"?????
Her sisters shit is in a storage unit in SJ and houses a sacred piece of furniture that she can no longer afford to care for. Thus, Noel needs to go clean up after the ding dong and make arrangements to have said item shipped all the way east YAY!
Oh ya...forgot about the "sister" drama. sorry that's still going on.
Come on guys! Get your confirmation and checks in to Dr. Evil! The Norcal Dr. Evil Transmission Clinic is on!
Dave, you have my attention now... So a stock 5th for a highway gear or I have also heard of a flipped gear? Which is this and what does it give you at highway speed for engine speed?
Attached image(s)
A stock 5th for driving on the highway with MS gears is doable, but consider that you will have to wind up the car pretty high in 4th so that it doesnt fall on its face in fifth. For air cooled, no flipping of 5th gears.
I just built an A, F, M, S, ZD.
I haven't driven it a lot yet but, I like it a lot so far. It is a bit more of a leap to 5th but, it isn't a big deal. I love the shorter 4th. We have several roads around here that are poste 40 or 45 and the car is now comfortable in 4th on them. I wouldn't give up ZD for the interstates. My only issue may be on the interstate when traffic slows a little. Shifting between 4th and 5th often could get old.
I really wish I had an L 3rd for AX but, they are just too expensive.
Dave
Hey Mike ,Cashiers chek is in the mail today It really is in the mail. John
Mike,
I think it really isn't a problem for those of us with Raby motors or Raby kit motors. We have torque everywhere so when you grab 5th it should just push right into a comfortable cruise. The problem I have in California is that you can seldom get to 5th gear for the traffic...
Its not a problem for any of the /4 engines. ZD is the stock 5th, but you will have to wind out 4th to get to 5th as Dave said. He has the most recent experience with such so if what he said was good for you then go for it.
Rob, I think That gearset is good. I like it on the street, I'll have it on a practice AX course Sunday although it looks like rain so, I probably won't find out much. Most of our courses we never get to the top of 3rd so I'm hoping to eliminate a couple of shifts and drive through a couple of corners in 3rd.
Dave
Norcal Dr. Evil Transmission Clinic! Sonoma California, December 5th and 6th. Get a PM in to Dr. Evil and send your check to the address he PM's back to you. Let Dr. Evil know about any parts you need so you can have them spoken for if he has them in his stash...
Attached image(s)
you should be receiving my $$$ Monday.
i think i experienced a loose shift fork on my backup trans.... there is hope. ;-)
Just a little over a month until the NorCal Dr. Evil Transmission Clinic... Get those checks in to Dr. Evil and reserve your spot. You don't want to miss a shift on this one
Attached image(s)
Hmmmmm
It seems to me the SoCal folks sent their checks to Dr. Evil well in advance of the event. Could it be that the NorCal folks are just a bit flakey???
Hmmmmmm....
Well, 3 non-flakes got their fees to me today Jerry Sousa, Roger (who is now my new favorite and he knows why), and Don Melcher.
C'mon ya flakes, man up.
JeepJohn56, your fee arrived
I kicked myself in the ass when I missed the last Nor Cal class and I'm not letting that happen again.
Question: What is a damn shame?
Answer: A 914 collecting dust.
Just a month until the NorCal Dr. Evil Transmission Clinic! Are you in?
Attached image(s)
I am in as a spectator. Does the good, er, evil Dr mind if I take photos? I know this is one of the last classes, so I wondered how big of an issue that would be. I'm house broke, tax broke, broke broke right now. I'd be happy to throw a little cash at the event, but I can't do $300 until next year.
I have a few questions.
What tools do we need to bring? I've never disassembled a trans-axle before and suspect I may need to procure snap ring pliers and probably much more.
Like specialty tools.
I read something about a gear set tool or stand to hold gear sets. I would like to pre-fab whatever I can that will help with the rebuild.
Got a picture of what your gearset stand looks like? =)
Roger~
By now even my check should be in Mike's hands. Is yours? The NorCal Dr. Evil Transmission Clinic is coming up! Be there or miss shifts...
Attached image(s)
Just a month away! Are you all signed up? The NorCal Dr. Evil Transmission Clinic December 5th and 6th in Sonoma California at Original Customs. Meet the Dr. fix your transmission troubles and see Mark DeBernardi's Original Customs... A great place to get your Porsche troubles fixed.
Attached image(s)
I think I'm signed up as a spectator.
I think I'm signed up as a spectator.
+1 for possible spectator, drinking assistant
I'm penciling it as a spector too.
For anyone on the fence, this is a great experience and a heck of a price for rebuilding and learning about your transmission. Do not miss it.
Its also should be way cool to see Mark's shop and meet one of the coolest 914 supporters on the West Coast.
Oh ya, where the hell am I sleeping that weekend?
If all else fails, I have a couch. I'm about 40 minutes from Marks shop.
Modest living here... ;-)
I dont need much. A place to sleep and a place to wash my balls in morning.
14mm not 15 mm socket Large vice grips, large crescent wrench or 32mm combo wrench.
I am staying at Andy's
Yippee!!! I am so excited. Not really but it will be nice to get everyone together and learn something new. It occurs to me that I should have asked the evil one if he would mind opening this up as a tech session for PCA members. Too late to calender it now though and it sounds like we are going to have a crowd!
Attached image(s)
Are you ready to get your wrench on? Got your check in? Made up your lies for when you call in sick? NorCal Dr. Evil Transmission Clinic is coming up December 5 and 6. Be there and go home shiftier!
Attached image(s)
Hey Conedodger.
I'm coming along with Ron Wolfe as a spectator/cheerleader. Just a few questions about the clinic:
(1) Kick off time Saturday morning?
(2) Lunch: Should we bring or is a lunch break at a local eatery like Issa's planned?
(3) After party: Beers on site? Dinner?
We're staying with my younger brother in Petaluma and I need to coordinate "family stuff" to make sure everybody's happy, ifin you know what I mean.
Cheers.
RG
Hey Man,
We are still deciding on how food will be done. I dont schedule breaks, take them when you need them. Start time would be nice if it could be 10am so I have time to recover from Fri night and do the drive from Pacifica with Jim. I will work as late as I am allowed.
My plans:
Arrive Fri late morning, hook up with Jimtab and stay there for the night with the wife.
Sat, wife does her thing in SJ, Jim and I leave for Mark's shop.
Sat night, work until cant go no more, bunk over at Andy's
Sun start again
Well, Doc, that's a good plan and I love a marathon. I'm pretty low maintenance so a gallon of coffee, a few sandwiches and I'm golden.
RG
Mark and I were just talking about that yesterday. Yes, he is back and all married up.
We were discussing a small charge to cover the cost of some hamburger patties, buns, condiments, potato salad, chips, etc... Mark has a gas powered BBQ grill on site. I have a large ice chest from my boat that I can bring down. Maybe people can bring their own drink preference and use the ice chest to keep it cold.
Maybe we can get one of the spectator dudes to man the grill for us.
Beautiful car Don!
Ah, heck. Looks like I may be out after all...
--DD
What time frame do you have and what are you looking to do, Jeff? I can get you out fast if that is what you need.
My box shifts well but has a wine that gets louder and softer depending on the speed. It does not make any difference what gear I am in.
It started when I dropped the car off for a PPI and when the mechanic gave it back it had a major oil leak and the wine! I think he missed a high rev shift or something.
Thats all I know!
I can be there all day from whenever early to about 6 maybe 6:30 on Sat and all day on Sunday with no restrictions!
Let me know if that works and I will put the check back in the mail box, I pulled it out yesterday afternoon when I started reading about it going into the wii hours of the night.
Your hours are fine, Jeff. I'll get you set up.
Thanks, I will put the check in the mail again tomorrow!!
Hey Mark!!! Do we need to bring a work table or anything to work on? saw horse's and a top? Or will you have enough place's to work on? John
A few folding tables will be great!
Better to have and not need than need and not have.
Check in the mail!!
I am there getting my spectating on!
I like to watch!
Well it looks like I will be attending this class and am really looking forward to meeting some fellow 914 owners....I live up by Eureka and there are a few up here but not too many....
(not sure why this says girl, its how I look after downshifting into first... (well except for the smile...)) hopefully that is all soon to change!!!
Walt

Roadster fan (Jim) – 1st gear parts cost, post 25
Lucid 914 dream (Jaime) – in, post 42
I'll be contacting these folks directly
I would like to come out and watch and perhaps a little hands on if needed.
Gonna be a party!
13 days and counting.
Thomas and I did a little prep work today... cases getting ready for a good scrubbing. If we can each get 2 good ones out of those, we'll be happy.
We should definately have some extra parts to swap. I am looking for a Z gear set, or if I can't get that, a ZA set, so if anyone has one to sell/swap, let me know. There is one 914 box, the rest are 911/912 boxes, (2 4 speeds, 7 5 speeds).
I have a 4x8 rack that I can bring if needed to use as a table, sets up in a couple minutes and can support a couple trannies if work space is an issue.
Attached image(s)
Wow. Did you keep all the parts together? I know someone who needs an S gear set from one of the 5 speeds.
My friend Dixon will be there to watch/help me.
Awesome You guys are very smart
It's probably been mentioned somewhere else in this thread, but other than tools I know we're going to need a gasket set and the various seals (main shaft, output shafts, speedo drive). Is PP the best place to pick these up or can a better deal be had elsewhere?
Just joined here (finally). I am very interested in attending or participating in the NorCal workshop, but would like to know how/where I can get an H Set to install, as my 914 has a V8. Whether I participate, or only attend, may depend on whether or not I can get the gear set in time. Are they available through some retailer like PP, or only used, like the Classifieds here?
Randy, if you can't get a transmission gasket set, I can get them overnight with no shipping. The pricing is about the same as Pelican.
I just ordered all of the new stainless hardware for everyone $70 worth of nuts and washers.
I see that Mark can get them as well. It would be best to get them from him if I havent already gotten one for you. I have 7 on the way and will need 3-4 of those. I dont know if I could get more on such a short notice. Mark probably can. Let me know if he cant and I will pull some strings.
I understand that there is a lot of traffic in this thread so some stuff may get lost. I have been asked a few times today alone about seal kits.
Seal kits are NOT included with tuition. Please plan accordingly.
I updated the first post a little bit.
I can get seal kits for $41.71 each.
I can get synchros for $105.77 each.
I finaly decided to pull my engine & trans to get ready for the Clinic!!!
See you guys on the 5th!!
Attached image(s)
Evil,
Does this look normal??? Would this cause a whine when moving?
Trying to put together any parts that I may need for the clinic!
Jeff
Attached image(s)
That flange looks normal for a CV that let go You can find better there and just swap out. As for whining, nope. I am pretty sure we will find some internal bearings that are shot on the output side.
Thanks,
Do I need to replace them or will they work for many more years as they are?
They will be fine as they are, but you can get a set off of a core box for free most likely.
Dude, this event is coming up FAST! Gonna be a short week.
Hey Mike, Out of all the seals kits your bringing is my set one of them? I sent the extra $40 for them. Also to Mark, It was mentioned earlier that they might be a bar-b-que for lunch, are we to bring some meat or something or just money? will bring own drinks have no problem bringing something esle. Just let me know. John
So - my first "job" (besides working in the family hardware and electronics stores) some 40 years ago was as a newspaper reporter. The one thing that is drilled into your head is the "Five W & H" questions that EVERY story must answer.
Maybe this information is buried and scattered about in this thread - but it wold be nice to have it all in one place, don't ya think?
Who: Dr Evil
What: Transmission Rebuild Class
When: December 5th from 10 AM to whenever, December 6'th from whenever till...
Where: Some place in Sonoma???
Why: So we knows how to rebuild the transmission
How: By bringing our own transmission, some tools and brains eager to be filled with knowledge.
So - I think I pretty much have everything down but where.
I will bring my BBQ. One of the attendees will be bringing some food. But if some people brought a six pack of drinks or a couple burgers/hot dogs just to make sure.
If all else fails, there is a sandwich shop down the street and a pizza place close by.
People who are attending should print off the following image for reference. GPS/MapQuest/Google will not get you to my door. Most people who come to the shop for the first time turn on Hamblin Rd and I can hear them driving around the industrial park.
Some cool info on 914 901 transaxles for those who do not have it.

Anybody going have an extra plastic side shift cover? Or plastic underside air deflectors, steel strap for brake resevoir, 15x7 Fuchs. I can buy/trade. I got some stuff.
Dirty UPS guy left nut sacks on my porch The SS hardware is in!
A tranny clinic is a tranny clinic.
My GF asked if I was going to wear a tutu and lipstick.
I told her, "Oh hell yea'".
What "other" parts do you guys need?
I was an observer at The Doc's clinic in San Jose a couple years ago and think it is probably time for a little refresher course. I hope to make it by on Sunday.
I just got off the phone with Al Weidman who is coming down to spectate this weekend. He brings up a good question. What time are we getting started?
Trying for 9am depending on traffic and hangover status from Jim Tab's house Dont start without me! 7 hours until we leave for the airport....I bought a separate case for my parts and tools. Its a small rolling back pack that weighs about 50#. I am bringing LOTS of parts, but I only have 1 out put bearing so the core boxes will be needed for sure. I had people buy up all of my spares and pulled one from a core today so I would at least have one for Jim if he needed it.
We plan on dropping Jim's gearbox there, fix, reassemble, reinstall all in the first day.
Crap, I cant find some parts I had. If anyone has 2 cone screws and an extra CV/flange gasket please bring them.
I know I have the CV gaskets. Think I have the cone screws.
I know that Mark knows he has the CV gaskets too;)
Will try to swing by sometime this weekend!
4am....on our way in T-15min :zombie:
I probably should have thrown this out earlier but I'm bring about 25 pounds of pulled pork, a couple gallons of beans, buns, sauce and about 5 pounds of Rolaids for lunch on Saturday.
If there are other plans, lemme know.
RG
I have CV Gaskets.
I have heat.
I do not have cone screws.
If anyone has folding tables and is capable of bringing them, please do. There are 13+ builders and so the more tables the better.
I'll bring coffee and a grinder. And i don't want you anywhere near that coffee machine!
Doug and I are bringing tables and chairs for ourselves, so that should free up space for others on what Mark already has. I'll can also swing by Safeway or WholePaycheck on the way in to pick up some additional grub. Anything needed in particular?
I think we're planning on rolling in at 10 AM.
I'm bringing a folding table and chair for me, to free up table space, also some burgers and buns, chips, maybe some one could bring the fixings for the burgers. willtry to be there around 9:30 - 10:00. Any one need a ride from or near Antioch call me (925) 706-8628 John
I'm looking for a good core to rebuild on my own. I'll be there on Sunday, if anyone has a good core that they want to sell. Bring it.
The shop is officially As-Clean-As-Its-Gonna-Get.
Andy, I bought some filters and used those and it seemed to make better coffee. Good thing I can build cars better than I can make coffee.
See everyone tomorrow!
Feh. I'm sick, so I will be attending neither the clinic nor the other activities that were scheduled for this weekend.
--DD
My table is out. Yopu has appointments so she needs the 4Runner. I had to beg a ride with Jim Dupree because ironically and tragically, I blew the hell out of the 915 in the Carrera tonight on my way home.
I'm hoping to stop by around 10 for a little while.
Pics! Well, they're uploading now and will be finished by 1 AM:
http://pixelrandy.zenfolio.com/evil_clinic
I can't thank Mike (Dr Evil) and Mark enough for putting this together. Had a great day, got a lot done and learned a lot too. Lunch was fantastic and whoever brought the pulled pork is a hero in my book.
I went through three of my 901s before finding a gearstack worth digging into. Lots of high mileage junk with broken bits in the first two.
I left Sonoma around 8 tonight and there were still a bunch of guys working and drinking beer. I need to return tomorrow to have the shift forks aligned and then to put the stack back into the housing. Almost done though and it looks like it's going to be awesome! My last gearbox for Blue had 350K miles on it and when under load was louder than the motor.
Hope everyone else had success today and it was great getting to reconnect with those of you I hadn't seen in a while! We should do this sort of thing more often.
I'll be back around 10-11 tomorrow. Night night,
Nice photos Randy!
Jim and I got my gear change done and headed home by about 9pm. Stopped and had dinner at Chili's and hit the bed back in Sac by 11pm or just after. (well, mostly Jim )
The food was great, it was great to meet new people, and better to see old friends again.
My back is killing me...
Here's my pics from yesterday.
Attached image(s)
Did you guys have a raffle after I left?
Yup, RobW raffled off some goodies to help make the Mary Shotridge event happen.
I had so much fun and I didn't even bring a box! Our people are great! Even the 912 NARP bitches are cool. The gear box is something I've only changed seals and flanges and even the tail cone. I kinda avoided. Dr. Evil is great. I learned so much. It may have been better that I didn't have a box because I watched him do 1-2 of the same proceedures. Then I helped others. I had my hands in so many peoples boxes that I feel a little....dirty. Thank you.
Andy
Another great day in Sonoma and I came away with a fresh 901 box. How cool is that? Again, many thanks to Mike and Mark and everyone else who lent a hand.
Adding today's photos to the gallery. Should be all finished by 10 PM PST:
http://pixelrandy.zenfolio.com/evil_clinic
Ug, is tomorrow really monday?
Thanks Mike, Mark and all. Truly a team effort and a LOT of fun!!! Even if we DID have to hang out with you Volksche guys.
Just wanted to thank Mike and Mark for putting on a great clinic and the space for all of us. I learned alot and I know I'll probly will for get some of the steps, so I hope for the video from Mike when he gets it done. Nice meeting all the guys and putting face's with screen name's. We should have a tune up pary next including valve adjustment. hint, hint. Thanks again Mark. John
Did Tabor ever get back on the road and drive it home?
Thanks goes out to McMark for hosting. Dr Evil for flying in and lending his expertise. It was great to see everyone, meet new faces especially the 912 crowd, raise $134 for the Shortridge build (thank you to all the bidders, winners, and one special exhibitor), and to everyone for making this a really awesome event.
Thanks again!
It was a great experience!!! I learned way more than I ever thought I would!!
Thanks to Evil and everyone who jumped in and helped out where needed!
OOOOhhh Yea....And Mark for the location!!
And a special thanks to the Chefs
I now have a working transmission, I hope!!
Thanks to Richard for the AMAZING food.
Thanks to Dr. Evil, 'cause got MAD skills.
And thanks to all of you who made the event happening by coming from all over the bay area to hang out and get GREASY!
...adding my thanks to Mike and Mark for making this happen!! Thanks also to Richard, Rob W, Jeff, and all the other guys that lent me a hand with my tranny... this was a really cool event, great people all trying to help each other out, and if anyone has ever debated wether or not to attend one of these...DO IT!

Noel and I are finally home and had a great trip. What a great turn out! I really enjoyed the 912 crowd and their added transmission oddities.
Richard, great food and I enjoyed meeting you.
Randy, great technical pictures! I will definitely be using them in the upcoming rebuild video as they perfectly show the important parts I'll need to get your info for credit.
Andy, thanks for waiting for me on Sat night and for the place to crash. It was good seeing you again since it had been since '05
Mark, you are a superstar, dont tell yourself otherwise ( ). If it were not for your generosity this would not have been possible. Thanks for putting up with everyone and being a most gracious host.
Rob Sime, thanks for being the catalyst for this event. You have done me and all of the others a great service in making sure this event did not die soon after its conception. I hope you enjoy your MSZd box
RobW, always good to see you. Thank you for bringing the items for auction and for heading it up. Also, thank you for pitching in with some of the tranz work.
Observers/helpers, you are priceless. The observers always learn a lot and become like my left hand (the right one you dont want to be ).
Everyone, I am constantly flattered at the trust that you place in me and work hard to deserve it. I was very flattered by many of your words and actions. You people make doing these clinics such a pleasure. Even though I barely sleep, work long hours, and feel like I was hit by a truck every night, I keep coming back because of the great people that I get to hang out with and teach.
I'm a bit spent for now, maybe more later.
Dr. Evil you are really two of a kind. Thank you so much for your patients and sharing your knowledge with us. A great group of people, great food and great host. Thank you all. Al.
Flattering picture, Randy

Looks like great time for all. Wish I was there.
McMark...one word.....SHELVES....
I want to buy that license frame....oola la la la...
Rich
I learned so much, it was just plain sick. Sick I tell you!
Big thanks to Mike for putting up with my lack of skills. I would have drank waaay more beer if I were you.
Big thanks to Mark for hosting such an event. Your new shop was the perfect size and setup well.
Thanks again.
