Thanks for setting this up, and thanks to Mike for doing these things. What a guy!!! biggrin.gif

I have at least four engine stands so we can set up at least four transmissions for rebuilding. If there's more than that, we can use tables.

Posted by: Dr Evil Aug 9 2009, 09:44 PM

December, eh? Alrighty. I wont have a solid date until the interview invites for residency come in smile.gif

Posted by: Dr. Roger Aug 9 2009, 10:00 PM

do we have an estimate on cost? I definitely have a tranny or two that need some luvin'.

Posted by: Krieger914 Aug 9 2009, 10:16 PM

I am interested!

Posted by: Dr Evil Aug 9 2009, 11:19 PM

As for my side of things, the cost is the same $300 I charge every John, er, person. You can bring as many gear boxes as you want, but I do not guarantee that you will get all of them built, just one wink.gif You can buy parts from me, but I dont know how many used parts I will have left after the other 4 clinics. I must be crazy blink.gif I need at least 4 paid customers to be viable.

Posted by: RoadGlue Aug 10 2009, 12:08 AM

I am 100% in. Can we nail down a date sooner than later?

Tough to get closer than that Randy... Mike is going to Canada to try to calm down the angry Canadiens. We will sooner or later go to war with them but we need to avoid it while we are spread so thin in Iraq and Afganistan, with North Korea rising... In October and November Mark has some jail time due to that indecent exposure charge... blink.gif We have to go for December. Obviously early so we don't compete with Christmas shopping... biggrin.gif

Posted by: ConeDodger Aug 10 2009, 08:51 AM

We have two that are interested and one who is 100% in... Who else wants to shift with ease? Can't beat that price! $300 bucks is less than 3 hours labor if you had this done in a transmission shop and you get the satisfaction of doing it yourself and becoming more knowledgeable...

Come on! Sign up for 901 Proctology 1 and 2! $300 and you are in!!!

We sense you are getting thin and be prepared, as soon as we can muster up enough methane we plan to "fart in your general direction" bootyshake.gif

Thanks for the invite over on the 912BBS. Put me down for a maybe on a rebuild - the date is the key factor. I have a soft 2'nd syncro (doesn't everyone?) that I have been living with for 9 years.

Posted by: puff adder Aug 10 2009, 03:10 PM

I live 10 miles from Sonoma.

I would love to attend, at least as a spectator, and I can also contribute some cash for the learning experience.

If things work out, I may even buy a gearbox for the occasion.

Posted by: RoadGlue Aug 10 2009, 03:16 PM

I have a number of core gearboxes. I'm pretty sure that in the end I'll have a spare box I'd be willing to sell, but I need to take inventory of what I have before I can commit to that. The goal was to take apart all the cores before the event so I could get enough guts together to build up two boxes. Dug has a gear stack jig (if that's what it's called) that I'm sure we could use if having an extra around would be helpful.

Posted by: jeeperjohn56 Aug 10 2009, 03:25 PM

Hey Rob, My tranny didn't need it but I would like to come watch and learn. John pray.gif

Posted by: Dr Evil Aug 10 2009, 03:53 PM

Extra jigs are helpful, sort of. It depends on how well it is done and how big it is. Most are just cut up cases and they are much bigger than they need to be wink.gif

Posted by: Dr Evil Aug 10 2009, 03:55 PM

Oh ya, 912 stuff is doable as well wink.gif PM me if you are a 912 person and have questions.

Posted by: RoadGlue Aug 10 2009, 03:55 PM

He had a plastic jig that I remember seeing. Something he purchased for Jerry Wood's rebuild clinic if I recall correctly.

OK - thanks. My 69 coupe is pretty much OK - every once in a while it "nicks" up-shifting to 2'nd. I am thinking it is a linkage adjustment/wear issue. But my 69 Targa has had a sluggish syncro into 2'nd since I got it in 2000. Sweepco helped a bit. I am hoping for the 1'st weekend in Dec as November is booked for me and the only other possibility would be the 3'rd weekend in Dec - but I expect that to possibly be a problem because my daughters birthday is the 20'th and I am not sure of what may get planned with that and Christmas.

Posted by: RonW Aug 10 2009, 11:13 PM

another 912'er here. i swapped 3/4/5th gears in my 901 and did a reseal last year when i put in my type4 but would love to hang out and spectate if that option is still open.

I have a spare 901 to use for the class, but my question - what's best / worst case for parts.

Also do you cover flipping gear sets and installing limit slips, like Gear Vendors?

Thanks.

Posted by: Dr Evil Aug 11 2009, 12:55 AM

LSD = no. Too much time, needs its own course. I can discuss it and you will understand how to do it, but we will not be doing any.

Gear swaps are easy and yes we can do them that day if you have the sets. I have a sheet of gears on my rebuild thread that Aaron Cox made. It covers everything and you can print it.

I dont understand your question about scenarios for parts?

Posted by: jcd914 Aug 11 2009, 01:17 AM

spectator
Noun
a person viewing anything; onlooker [Latin spectare to watch]

December is always a busy time for me but I'd love to come hang out and be a spectator. I have rebuilt enough 901's over the years. I might be able to come up with a gear jig (metal OE style) and dog teeth pullers.

Posted by: puff adder Aug 11 2009, 05:29 AM

What about 915 gearboxes?

Posted by: roadster fan Aug 11 2009, 06:29 AM

Definitely coming, probably as a builder. Need to look at what the first gear parts are gonna cost etc.

If I use my extra transmission for the class and take it totally apart I'd like to repair whatever needs fixing.

Neither of us knows the condition of the transmission before it's apart, but you've done tons of them and must have a feel for what it could cost for parts. I guess the best case would be zero, i.e., everything is perfect. The worst case, broken gears, synchros or whatever.

Thanks.

Posted by: ConeDodger Aug 11 2009, 08:47 AM

My Guard TB equipped 901 will be coming apart for an MSX gear swap if it doesn't exceed the parameters of the clinic...

Posted by: Dr Evil Aug 11 2009, 10:40 AM

I have a source for 1st gear sliders at $350, fyi.

915 will not be included as I will not have the tools and time to do them.

To figure out what parts you may need, I recommend you pull the stack beforehand. Instructions on doing that (for the side shifter) are in my rebuild link below. You can post pics here and I can Dx your parts needs.

What is a guard TB?

If we have a good heat source we can swap in billet plates if you have them. A bench vice is necessary for the clinic.

Posted by: ConeDodger Aug 11 2009, 11:13 AM

Guard TB = Guard Torque Biasing Differential. Kind of like LSD but better for autocrossing. Moves the torque to the wheel that isn't slipping.

Guard is a brand name. Paul Guard lives in Auburn, just up Hwy 80 from me. I might be able to coax him down to talk a bit... Doubt it though. 914 guys are notoriously cheap and the TB unit costs about $1200.00 retail...

I just want to swap in some MSX gears to make it a close ratio box. biggrin.gif

Posted by: Dr Evil Aug 11 2009, 11:25 AM

I realized what you meant by TB after I posted, but then got busy with a call from degreeoff which, of all things, is going to have me install a TB diff for him rolleyes.gif I just woke up wink.gif

I pointed him towards Guard. I like their stuff and Paul seems like a nice guy, and I love Auburn.

I am in on this event depending on what day in Dec it is scheduled!

My 6 trans has a constant wine at any speed in all gears but shifts great! It started when I took it in for a PPI and the mechanic gave it back broken! My guess is that he missed shift??

Cool, that will help if anyone needs to get 1st gear off of the main shaft.

Also, I am not available for the 15-16-17 as my wife's birthday is on the 16 smile.gif

X-mas is out, of course so we are looking at early Dec thus far.

Posted by: Jerry75914 Aug 11 2009, 02:08 PM

I am definitely interested, my tranny has issues, and I'm clueless, but enthusiastic! It will ultimately depend on the date, but if I can make it in any way, shape or form I'll be there!

I am inclined to call it December 5th and 6th pending approval by the other principals involved. Mark? Mike?

A lot more interest than I anticipated. For that reason, I think we should nail down a date asap... biggrin.gif

Cool! What kind of residency are you shooting for? UC Davis has close to a million (gross exageration biggrin.gif ) residents spread all over the NorCal Hospitals...

Mark will probably not have a problem with this date. I will call him and have him consult his big brain sometime today...

Posted by: Dr Evil Aug 12 2009, 10:44 AM

I want EM. If you have connections now is the time to use them. Otherwise, there is no way I am getting back to CA for residency, way too competitive.

I know individual attendings but I think picking residents happens above their pay grade. One of my old paramedics has been an EM doc for about 10 years now. Let me ask him if he has some grease, his name is Kevin Mackey at Kaiser South Sacramento which is the newest Trauma Center in Sac. Just had their ACS survey about 2 months ago. Sac should be "more" open since we now have 4 Trauma Centers and 11 total emergency rooms in the metro area. Kaiser is building a new facility in Folsom which probably has a 2012 opening. Widen that by 30 miles and you can add another 4 emergency rooms.

Basically longer studs that go through the intermediate plate with nuts welded to studs on the front side.

It's the main drag running right through town. Lake on one side, businesses on the other. biggrin.gif

Seriously, Lake Elmo has basically become a suburb of St. Paul. Used to be the closest thing to a city was Stillwater and the State Prison was the largest business with Andersen Windows bringing up a close second.

I've got a sideshift 901 out of my '73 teener that I can contribute to the cause for a fair price. It includes the shifter, all linkage and the engine mount. I don't know the exact history of the box, but I got the car from my next door neighbor and he says it shifted great when he parked it 15 years ago. Either way, you could go through it at the clinic, or buy it for parts.

I live in Davis, which is on the way to Sonoma from the Central Valley. PM me with an offer if you're interested.

I live in Davis, which is on the way to Sonoma from the Central Valley. PM me with an offer if you're interested.

I know one guy who let a car fall on his face but Dr. Evil hadn't graduated yet. lol-2.gif If you want to see THE Dr. Evil this is your chance! $300 to rebuild nada to watch.... Think about it! You can fix those damned synchros AND pick your gear ratio... Plenty of time to study and ferret out those proper gears for your engine... I am going with an MSX 3/4/5.

Since I am always getting crap about pictures of my car with garbage containers in the background, I thought I would show that someone else has pics of their car with garbage containers too! smile.gif

But not for you. You will be at the Northern California Transmission Rebuild Clinic at Original Customs on December 5/6. Mark your calendar. Study your transmission dropping procedures. (drop the muffler, support the engine, drop the tranny. Most common mistake is forgetting the ground strap). See you all there!!!

What do we need to purchase ourselves before showing up? Does the $300 include gasket kits, hardware, etc? How often do bits like bearings need replacing?

Thanks!

Posted by: Dr Evil Aug 26 2009, 11:33 AM

You can purchase parts through me if you like. The $300 is only for the class, seal kits are $40. Bearings and such often break, but I can not tell you to buy replacements until I know more about your gear box. I do not see myself having any used stock left by Dec as I have 4 clinics ahead of this one.

PM me with your gear box symptoms.

Things may seem calm on the surface but I am getting email every day from guys wondering about what gears to put in. Maybe we should start a thread on gear choices. I am going with MSX which gives me a very close ratio box. Eric Shea has an MS? with the 5th gear being some highway gear so he can climb the mountain passes he needs to to get East or West of SLC.

There are lots of gear choices and they are expressed in letters. Maybe someone can post that chart...

So there you have it... The grey gears are stock 914. The numbers along the left tell you what gear that can be used for. Just follow the chart to your redline and you can see your top speed in that gear. Fun with charts! Who says being a geek isn't a blast??? blink.gif

Rob, are you installing an LSD, or just rebuilding a box that already has and LSD?

Posted by: Dr Evil Sep 3 2009, 04:12 PM

Ya, which is it? If the box already has an LSD in it then that is not a problem. If you want to rebuild a stock LSD unit, we can do that to, sort of. If you want to install an LSD, that is a no.

My race car has an LSD that slips from time to time. Its not bad for AX though. Since I enjoyed rebuilding my stock 901, I thought it might be fun to do it again with the race box, but I have 3 working 901s right now: 1 rebuilt Dr Evil 901, 1 4K mile LSD / new intermediate plate 901, and the race 901 with LSD. The transmission clinic will be pretty much a bring your transmission and leave the car home event. It will be held at McMark's shop which is in an industrial complex in Sonoma. I wouldn't leave my car there over night. It is probably safe from people wandering by as this is some very - very expensive real estate but, McMark might need parts! sad.gif

A recent article in Grassroots Motorsports stated "You'd have better luck finding second gear while stirring your Cheerios at breakfast than while shifting a 914". Perhaps a bit of literary excess but still, the 901 is notorious for being difficult to shift especially when it is in less than pristine maintained condition. Here is your chance to shift better. Looking in Craigs List, for SF Bay area, there's a few 914 transmissions for sale from $150 and up. There always seems to be at least a couple available, always for really cheap.

We have about a month and a half to go until the planned December Dr. Evil Transmission Rebuild Clinic at Original Customs in Sonoma California. In the next week or two the dates will get solidified as Dr. Evil gets his residency interviews set. Bring your wife and make a weekend of it... You will be working hard for 12 hours a day both Saturday and Sunday so the wives can go raid Napa and Sonoma on their own. This should be a fun and productive weekend... biggrin.gif

The date is not confirmed at this time. Mike may not get letters until the first of November IIRC. I think he will confirm it here in this thread himself and he will give the instructions on who and how to pay... I know it will not be me and probably not Mark.

Posted by: Dr Evil Oct 18 2009, 11:40 AM

So, I got an email from one of the programs for emergency medicine saying that they (all EM programs) are not supposed to send out invites to interview until after the Dean's letters have been posted on Nov 1 dry.gif I guess the Family Med folks dont need to follow the same rules as I have 5-6 interviews this month alone. As such, I will be busy with interviews (maybe) after the 1st of Nov, but I have time for this clinic.

As such, Dec 5-6, right? I'm in. For payment details PM me. I need to read through this thread again to see if any specific info is provided. If not I will make a concise post with all the info after I return from a day out with Noel (its our 1 yr anniversary today).

OK, here is the deal.

$300 per builder for as many boxes as you can build in 2 full days (usually 2).

Spectators are free and welcome. Spectators seem to learn a lot and ask very good questions. Typically, buy the end of day one the spectators are helping the builders with resolving their mistakes smile.gif

Date is the 5-6 of Dec.

I will supply special tools, the rest bring normal tools with you.

I will also pay for: brake cleaner/carb cleaner, nail brushes, aluminum basins and sheets to clean and build on, gloves, rags, methane, attitude, vulgar language.

If you want to prepay for used parts (because my supplies are limited) PM me and we can talk.

If you have core transaxles to part, bring them and make some $$. We tend to do a lot of free swapping at the event, though.

If you want to buy new parts let me know and I will see what prices I can get you. Sooner is better than later so I can ship them rather than try to pack them in my suit case dry.gif

I am not sure when I will close registration, if at all. The thing you lose by registering late is supplies and parts so be forewarned. Please register early!!!

Thats all for now. I think the rest of the questions are answered in the thread here.

As an aside, I am going to see about maybe including the 915 box. Dont hold your breath, but if I can I will smile.gif

I'll be bringing two 914-6 boxes and some side shifters for parts. I was looking at various gear ratios for building a tighter/shorter box in one of the six boxes.

How about A-GA-KA-R-ZA
GA comes on the 914-6 mainshaft
KA is a ZD flipped
R is a V flipped
ZA comes in the 914-6

The shift points would be: 40-60-80-100 mph and top speed in 5th would be near 150mph which is way more than enough.
The best would be the nice tight 2nd to 3rd.
3rd to 4th would be a similar drop to the stock O-V drop.
4th to 5th would be a bit larger, but 5th is really just for cruising.

I am not a 912 expert and I you should get confirmation from the good DR but...
Depending on the year it might have an early sand cast case rather that the die cast case but the gears and shafts should be essentially the same. Shift rods are a bit different but not enough that it would be a problem.

I am planning on coming as a spectator (and assistant as needed) but I can bring some parts and probably a metal jig for set up and the dog teeth tools. I have a complete side shift trans I can sell if someone needs it. Condition is unknown for sure but it is supposed to be usable.

Jim

Posted by: davep Oct 23 2009, 02:36 PM

the 911/ 912 transmissions types 901/xx & 902/xx (were used almost interchangeably) are essentially the same as the 914 transmission, and the type 911. Most of the 90z/xx transmissions are aluminum cased, but a few late 1969 are magnesium. They have somewhat different differentials than the 914 which has something closer to the 915 differential. However, the main shaft, pinion shaft and gears are essentially the same. So, Mike's clinic covers the 901, 902, 911 and 914 transmission as essentially the same box. Even the 905 sporto box is much the same.

Jim,
You can assist me since the tools you are bringing are just what will be needed for mine. I plan a swap to an M 3rd, S 4th, and X 5th. Ron says my synchros are bad on the replacement gears and one of them has bad dog teeth but all of that can be swapped onto the new gears from my original ones which he replaced the synchros on last year.

Also, remember, Mark has that good part for the broken piece on your transmission...

Dug, why those ratios? What is your tq curve like?

Biohazard wink.gif, a 912 box is fine unless it is form a 76 as that would be a 915 and I wont have the tool for that unless something changes between now and then.

I just took apart an early 911, 912 5 speed. It is considerably different. The case is the first thing you notice. It is longer from the differential to the intermediate plate. The intermediate plate is thinner so the length of the gear stack is the same. The bearings are different but may be interchangeable. I tossed them cause I had better.

The gear stack is similar. The gears and hubs are the same but the brake bands, stops and retaining ring are different. The sliders are the same. The pinion for the speedo drive is larger in diameter, so chuck that. It will cause you great grief if you try to use it. Both shafts are the same.

The differential is different. The splines for the output shafts are different.

The good news is this was A, F, M, S, X. so I used M and S for better gearing on the AX track. I used the stock ZD for an overdrive for the highway. If I trailered I would have used X. I toyed with getting a GA shaft and I still may. A is fine cause I just use it to get started and short shift to second.

The bands and blacks are just the same as the early model 901. The int plate bearings are sometimes the same. All the 5 speed 912 boxes have AFMSX in them. What do you mean the diff is different and the pinion is different? They should be identical and 7:31 ratio.

Dave,
I think Jake wants us to stay out of 5th gear. I notice that you can watch the CHT rise when you are in 5th. For that reason, I am going to put the X in as it would be a usable gear. Granted, the engine is less noisy and I am sure you get better mileage with the stock 5th though...

Just a note... I see that Paul has sold GT to someone in Colorado. So it is no longer located in Auburn.

Posted by: Dr Evil Oct 30 2009, 11:17 AM

A stock 5th for driving on the highway with MS gears is doable, but consider that you will have to wind up the car pretty high in 4th so that it doesnt fall on its face in fifth. For air cooled, no flipping of 5th gears.

Posted by: DNHunt Oct 30 2009, 12:07 PM

I just built an A, F, M, S, ZD.

I haven't driven it a lot yet but, I like it a lot so far. It is a bit more of a leap to 5th but, it isn't a big deal. I love the shorter 4th. We have several roads around here that are poste 40 or 45 and the car is now comfortable in 4th on them. I wouldn't give up ZD for the interstates. My only issue may be on the interstate when traffic slows a little. Shifting between 4th and 5th often could get old.

I really wish I had an L 3rd for AX but, they are just too expensive.

Posted by: ConeDodger Oct 30 2009, 04:51 PM

Mike,
I think it really isn't a problem for those of us with Raby motors or Raby kit motors. We have torque everywhere so when you grab 5th it should just push right into a comfortable cruise. The problem I have in California is that you can seldom get to 5th gear for the traffic...

Posted by: Dr Evil Oct 30 2009, 04:56 PM

Its not a problem for any of the /4 engines. ZD is the stock 5th, but you will have to wind out 4th to get to 5th as Dave said. He has the most recent experience with such so if what he said was good for you then go for it.

Posted by: DNHunt Oct 30 2009, 05:36 PM

Rob, I think That gearset is good. I like it on the street, I'll have it on a practice AX course Sunday although it looks like rain so, I probably won't find out much. Most of our courses we never get to the top of 3rd so I'm hoping to eliminate a couple of shifts and drive through a couple of corners in 3rd.

Just a month until the NorCal Dr. Evil Transmission Clinic! Are you in?

I am in as a spectator. Does the good, er, evil Dr mind if I take photos? I know this is one of the last classes, so I wondered how big of an issue that would be. I'm house broke, tax broke, broke broke right now. I'd be happy to throw a little cash at the event, but I can't do $300 until next year. sad.gif

Posted by: Dr. Roger Nov 4 2009, 01:16 PM

I have a few questions.

What tools do we need to bring? I've never disassembled a trans-axle before and suspect I may need to procure snap ring pliers and probably much more.
Like specialty tools.

I read something about a gear set tool or stand to hold gear sets. I would like to pre-fab whatever I can that will help with the rebuild.
Got a picture of what your gearset stand looks like? =)

A stock 5th for driving on the highway with MS gears is doable, but consider that you will have to wind up the car pretty high in 4th so that it doesnt fall on its face in fifth. For air cooled, no flipping of 5th gears.

I love my new 5th H gear thanks to the Dr.'s skilled direction, no problem from 4th to 5th. biggrin.gif
QUOTE(computers4kids @ Sep 26 2009, 06:46 PM) *

I can't believe how many rpm I carved off with the new h gear--somewhere around 500-700 at 65. I like to go to the Central Coast which is a 3 hour drive. That means my engine will have turned almost 100,000 less times in one trip. Thats' got to be a big plus in the gas mileage department. I was getting 20mpg, it will be interesting to see the mileage now. With 305 lbs of torque to the rear wheels there is no lag between 4th and 5th...perfect.

4.5 hour drive to Sonoma from my place...I'd love to come watch, hang-out, if I can pull it off with work.

Roger~

No specialty tools needed, but if you have some of the following tools etc, I would bring them.
30mm socket for the obvious, but also nice for driving in seals
rags
two blocks of wood to stand your gear stack on when assembling...also nice to stand 901 on when dropping the stack back in
tooth brush for cleaning parts
magnifine glass for Mike's printed directions smile.gif
small flat head screwdriver (pry old seals out)
13mm socket & rachet
15mm socket
10mm socket
rubber mallet
razor blade to clean gasket surfaces
walmart metal drip pans...very handy, but not necessary
I thought I was being smart bringing a wooden dowl to stack gears on...never needed...you will have your parts scattered all over your work area...cleaning and inspecting. If you stack your stuff too neatly....expect to be heckled. biggrin.gif

Hey Conedodger.

I'm coming along with Ron Wolfe as a spectator/cheerleader. Just a few questions about the clinic:

(1) Kick off time Saturday morning?
(2) Lunch: Should we bring or is a lunch break at a local eatery like Issa's planned?
(3) After party: Beers on site? Dinner?

We're staying with my younger brother in Petaluma and I need to coordinate "family stuff" to make sure everybody's happy, ifin you know what I mean.

Cheers.

RG

Hey Man,
We are still deciding on how food will be done. I dont schedule breaks, take them when you need them. Start time would be nice if it could be 10am so I have time to recover from Fri night and do the drive from Pacifica with Jim. I will work as late as I am allowed.

My plans:
Arrive Fri late morning, hook up with Jimtab and stay there for the night with the wife.
Sat, wife does her thing in SJ, Jim and I leave for Mark's shop.
Sat night, work until cant go no more, bunk over at Andy's
Sun start again smile.gif

Posted by: xgrove Nov 13 2009, 04:37 PM

Well, Doc, that's a good plan and I love a marathon. I'm pretty low maintenance so a gallon of coffee, a few sandwiches and I'm golden.

Mark and I were just talking about that yesterday. Yes, he is back and all married up.

We were discussing a small charge to cover the cost of some hamburger patties, buns, condiments, potato salad, chips, etc... Mark has a gas powered BBQ grill on site. I have a large ice chest from my boat that I can bring down. Maybe people can bring their own drink preference and use the ice chest to keep it cold.

Maybe we can get one of the spectator dudes to man the grill for us. chowtime.gif

I have a big'un too... I'll throw that in the back of the van.

Here's Jack, the lil' brother to that R-Gruppe 911 - 2 less jugs - and I bet a whole lot lighter! (1820#) It is his sister Flo that is getting the trans rebuild. Once I get learned on this stuff, maybe I'll change his gears more in line for autocross.

I guess I am not going to be able to make it! I have to be in San Ramon at 7:00pm on Saturday night!

If the clinic time ends earlier and the rest is just party then I can come but otherwise I am out!

Posted by: Dr Evil Nov 14 2009, 04:08 PM

What time frame do you have and what are you looking to do, Jeff? I can get you out fast if that is what you need.

Posted by: Jeffs9146 Nov 14 2009, 07:53 PM

My box shifts well but has a wine that gets louder and softer depending on the speed. It does not make any difference what gear I am in.

It started when I dropped the car off for a PPI and when the mechanic gave it back it had a major oil leak and the wine! I think he missed a high rev shift or something.

Thats all I know!

I can be there all day from whenever early to about 6 maybe 6:30 on Sat and all day on Sunday with no restrictions!

Let me know if that works and I will put the check back in the mail box, I pulled it out yesterday afternoon when I started reading about it going into the wii beer.gif hours of the night.

Thomas and I did a little prep work today... cases getting ready for a good scrubbing. If we can each get 2 good ones out of those, we'll be happy.

We should definately have some extra parts to swap. I am looking for a Z gear set, or if I can't get that, a ZA set, so if anyone has one to sell/swap, let me know. There is one 914 box, the rest are 911/912 boxes, (2 4 speeds, 7 5 speeds).

I have a 4x8 rack that I can bring if needed to use as a table, sets up in a couple minutes and can support a couple trannies if work space is an issue.

Just joined here (finally). I am very interested in attending or participating in the NorCal workshop, but would like to know how/where I can get an H Set to install, as my 914 has a V8. Whether I participate, or only attend, may depend on whether or not I can get the gear set in time. Are they available through some retailer like PP, or only used, like the Classifieds here?

The quick way would be Parts Heaven or EASY in the Bay area. You might also try High Performance House in the Bay. Rich Bontempi has at least 40 of everything I think. You might also try IPB Autosport in the Sacramento area. Ron has things like this he just has to go look...

So - my first "job" (besides working in the family hardware and electronics stores) some 40 years ago was as a newspaper reporter. The one thing that is drilled into your head is the "Five W & H" questions that EVERY story must answer.

Maybe this information is buried and scattered about in this thread - but it wold be nice to have it all in one place, don't ya think?

Who: Dr Evil
What: Transmission Rebuild Class
When: December 5th from 10 AM to whenever, December 6'th from whenever till...
Where: Some place in Sonoma???
Why: So we knows how to rebuild the transmission
How: By bringing our own transmission, some tools and brains eager to be filled with knowledge.

So - I think I pretty much have everything down but where.

Yup. All who have paid for a kit will have them. I have the synchro bands that were paid for as well. I have a list of those who paid for parts and who said they would pay at the door. All is good.

I will bring my BBQ. One of the attendees will be bringing some food. But if some people brought a six pack of drinks or a couple burgers/hot dogs just to make sure.

If all else fails, there is a sandwich shop down the street and a pizza place close by.

People who are attending should print off the following image for reference. GPS/MapQuest/Google will not get you to my door. wink.gif Most people who come to the shop for the first time turn on Hamblin Rd and I can hear them driving around the industrial park.

True enough. I have done it twice and even got Jim Dupree screwed up after the last autocross while he was towing a trailer none the less! Luckily he could get out of the situation.

Mark put a lean-to sign out by the road that says "Sex Change Clinic Here Today". That should guide this group in! lol-2.gif

I just got off the phone with Al Weidman who is coming down to spectate this weekend. He brings up a good question. What time are we getting started?

Trying for 9am depending on traffic and hangover status from Jim Tab's house smile.gif Dont start without me! 7 hours until we leave for the airport....I bought a separate case for my parts and tools. Its a small rolling back pack that weighs about 50#. I am bringing LOTS of parts, but I only have 1 out put bearing so the core boxes will be needed for sure. I had people buy up all of my spares and pulled one from a core today so I would at least have one for Jim if he needed it.
We plan on dropping Jim's gearbox there, fix, reassemble, reinstall smile.gif all in the first day.

I have a great table for someone I used for the last rebuild clinic... its adjustable and opens up in the middle so you can set the tranny ass up on the bench without having to worry about the main shaft. I can bring it for one lucky person with one stip... bring it or have it brought to Pleasanton...

Let me know...

I also may have a couple cone screws laying around.

Doug and I are bringing tables and chairs for ourselves, so that should free up space for others on what Mark already has. I'll can also swing by Safeway or WholePaycheck on the way in to pick up some additional grub. Anything needed in particular?

I think we're planning on rolling in at 10 AM.

WRONG!!!

Do start without the Dr.

The more you have disassembled and cleaned by the time the Dr. rolls in, the more time you will have with the Dr. to work on replacement and reassembly. And don't worry about keeping the gear parts together, the Dr. will move everything around anyway.

BTW: Make sure your completely disassemble the gear casettes and really, really clean them or risk being sent back to your cleaning tank.

Have fun everybody!

I can't thank Mike (Dr Evil) and Mark enough for putting this together. Had a great day, got a lot done and learned a lot too. Lunch was fantastic and whoever brought the pulled pork is a hero in my book. smile.gif

I went through three of my 901s before finding a gearstack worth digging into. Lots of high mileage junk with broken bits in the first two. barf.gif

I left Sonoma around 8 tonight and there were still a bunch of guys working and drinking beer. I need to return tomorrow to have the shift forks aligned and then to put the stack back into the housing. Almost done though and it looks like it's going to be awesome! My last gearbox for Blue had 350K miles on it and when under load was louder than the motor.

Hope everyone else had success today and it was great getting to reconnect with those of you I hadn't seen in a while! We should do this sort of thing more often.

I'll be back around 10-11 tomorrow. Night night,

I had so much fun and I didn't even bring a box! Our people are great! Even the 912 NARP bitches are cool. The gear box is something I've only changed seals and flanges and even the tail cone. I kinda avoided. Dr. Evil is great. I learned so much. It may have been better that I didn't have a box because I watched him do 1-2 of the same proceedures. Then I helped others. I had my hands in so many peoples boxes that I feel a little....dirty. Thank you.

Noel and I are finally home and had a great trip. What a great turn out! I really enjoyed the 912 crowd and their added transmission oddities.

Richard, great food and I enjoyed meeting you.

Randy, great technical pictures! I will definitely be using them in the upcoming rebuild video as they perfectly show the important parts smile.gif I'll need to get your info for credit.

Andy, thanks for waiting for me on Sat night and for the place to crash. It was good seeing you again since it had been since '05 smile.gif

Mark, you are a superstar, dont tell yourself otherwise ( poke.gif ). If it were not for your generosity this would not have been possible. Thanks for putting up with everyone and being a most gracious host.

Rob Sime, thanks for being the catalyst for this event. You have done me and all of the others a great service in making sure this event did not die soon after its conception. I hope you enjoy your MSZd box smile.gif

RobW, always good to see you. Thank you for bringing the items for auction and for heading it up. Also, thank you for pitching in with some of the tranz work.

Observers/helpers, you are priceless. The observers always learn a lot and become like my left hand (the right one you dont want to be wink.gif ).

Everyone, I am constantly flattered at the trust that you place in me and work hard to deserve it. I was very flattered by many of your words and actions. You people make doing these clinics such a pleasure. Even though I barely sleep, work long hours, and feel like I was hit by a truck every night, I keep coming back because of the great people that I get to hang out with and teach.

I'm a bit spent for now, maybe more later.
