Bama 94teen here and kinda dissapointed in the date and the short notice. I have had 1 year plan to take family to beach that week. I missed Huntsville last year (car still in body shop). Missed the SCC at Barbers this spring (waiting on heads rebuild). I have spent 15 months and a ton of money getting my 75 to show condition - both looks and performance. Is the east coast thing the BBque in Sept? Does 914world do east, west and central rally every year? Pic is of my 94teen at Barbers Porsche 250 - parade lap last month.

welcome.png welcome.png welcome.png Don't be disappointed. The planners of this event put on a top shelf event. The guys and gals on World are putting on more and better events every year. There is no way anyone can attend everything that is happening on the BBS. But I hope to see you and your car at one of these things. Nice car! driving.gif

Bama 94teen,

I go to the first Friday of the month car show in Gadsden each month and enter the car show for free. The show is from 5 p.m. and goes until 9 p.m. The City blocks off Broad Street at 4 p.m. for seven blocks along with the side streets. There are four rows of cars down Broad Street and the side streets as well. They are turning cars away now and plan to expand once again. It seems like each month a different car club shows up. One month it was the Mustang club another it was Cameros then Cobras and this month there were several hundred Harley Davidson Motorcycles along with the many various classic cars that show up. They let the car clubs take one full block and there is usually around fifty of that type of car exclusively on that block.

This month Saturday morning after the car show we drove up to Little River Canyon which is about 30 minutes away for a very nice 914 spirited drive along the canyon ridge.

I am always the only 914 at the event. There have been some 356s but never any other 914s when I have been there. I saw your car at the Porsche 250 and it looks great. You should start showing it at Gadsden's First Friday car show.

Maybe the MUSR would consider coming to Gadsden AL one year or maybe we could host another 914 event there one day.

Hey PH1 - Kelvin. Was yours the orange 914 at Barbers? Give me a call some time (454-1063). Would like to start gathering 914 folk in our area and would love to meet at Gadsden Sept. 4th.

Friday driving tour - Scenic route thru rolling countyside to the Crater of Diamonds State Park. Return loop more rolling countryside only different roads. Not many photo ops on what I have labeled the Southern Route. smile.gif

Saturday driving tour - Scenic route up Hwy 7 thru heart of Ouachita Mtns to Petit Jean State Park. Lunch at Lodge with overlook of Arkansas River Valley. Lots of overlooks with plenty of photo ops on this route. Basically the same route coming back to hotel. which I am labeling the Northern Route. biggrin.gif

Lots and Lot's of driving.gif driving-girl.gif

Ken beer.gif

Kelvin - good luck in dragging some of them Bama boys and girls with you!!

If there are people planning on staying in Memphis Wed night there will be two teeners leaving Thur AM. Promise to make the drive to HS exciting. Maybe a little trip up Hwy 298 back to Hwy 5 for a little warm up?? w00t.gif

Posted by: jt914-6 Aug 13 2009, 11:51 AM

Ken...After you take 298 to 9 then back to 5 you should take Hy. 128 (on left) off of Hy. 5 near Hot Springs and follow it to Hy. 70 and go east to H.S. from there. If you have never been on 128, it is a "914 road". If you had about 30 or so minutes you wanted to spend, that would be a good route in......

We are planning on driving up to Memphis Wednesday night and would like to follow along with the group from Memphis (if we can keep up). I'm sure the drive to Hot Springs will be just as much fun as the drive to Talihina OK.

A video of that highway would probably be just as good or better than the one I made on The Dragon. Would love to see it.

Got my camera eqpt. mounted. See "Show us your camera mount" thread in the garage....I can record 12 hours before the storage media rolls over. Not sure if leading or following someone would be the best???? Maybe both....good reason to drive it twice.....

JT,

Thx for the heads up on 128. Don't believe I have been on it. It comes back to 70 at about the loop. correct?

298 is worth driving up and back each time you treat yourself to that road.... w00t.gif

I also checked out the video. I really like that angle and the Cayman did not even know he was passed.... biggrin.gif Are you instructing at the DE here in Memphis. I thought about driving in it and a SCCA PDX weekend after next. BUT my mechanic called today and said I need to make myself available for a motor/tranny install piratenanner.gif piratenanner.gif on that weekend. May need to give my motor till next summer before I push it to hard on the track tho....damn i'm rambling!!

Hy 128 comes out a little ways east of the "loop". It comes out a little before the rest area on 70. Not the most direct route into HS off of 5, but a good road for a 914.
I am not instructing at the DE. Just an advanced/solo driver. Wanted some down time and time to be with Dana...Maybe you and Don can stop by the DE that weekend one day. Anxious to see what the GPS says I'm doing down the drag strip.

The very nice orange 914 was Rich James from Montgomery. As usual for this type of event my car was in the shop. My car is a very faded out Marathon Blue Metallic.

JT,

Took 5 to 298 to 9 to 5 to 128 then went across 70 down 171 and came out on 270. Also drove thru the Gorge(7S) between 7 and 70 and then Westinghouse Road(between 70 and loop) as a way to get to 7 from hotel. No stop light, curvy road, prolly no traffic. Might be photo op in Gorge by creek?

I like 128 BUT it is no 298. That is one fun 14 miles!! It really only adds 30/45 minutes to the trip from
mem to HS.

We will try and see you and Dana that weekend you are in town.

Ken

Posted by: jt914-6 Aug 16 2009, 11:03 PM

Ken, It's hard to beat 298 when there's no traffic. Well, maybe the "pig trail". Glad you enjoyed 298 again. 128 is fun too, but no 298. Too bad we can't add 298 to the MUSR runs. I'm going to video it in the future. Will be glad to have you and Don/others visit when Dana and I are at Memphis.....

Looks like we're gonna take the building offline the weekend before or the weekend of the MUSR and leave's been cnl'ed for us. New generators coming in and we've gotta be in to turn everything down and then make sure it comes back up. More drive failures on our SAN is in sight...

If nothing else, I can sit in a cold noisy windy server room in front of the new air handlers with my eyes closed imaging that I'm on a straight uphill climb in the clouds on the TaliMena run. smile.gif While the power's on anyways...

Posted by: ClayPerrine Aug 18 2009, 07:47 PM

That sucks... hissyfit.gif

Make sure to take a coat for the server room. Even in mid summer it gets cold in there...

Could be worse.. could have to do an emergency shut down of the whole main server room of a fortune 100 company because the electrical transfer switch for the generator froze from being invaded by fire ants!!!

That night sucked!!!

When I talked to Ed about the Ramble, he said he already committed to Parade and Monterey this year, so he really couldn't take the time off.

He wanted to show up though.

And Damp Dave is married now, so he can't show up either.

Leaves the field wide open in the tech quiz.....

I called the lady at the hotel yesterday and was told we can still have the special rate for a few days. Also she told me if I call her prior to someone booking she will make sure of it. Therefore if anyone tries to book and they don't give you the special rate get in touch with me and I will make a call.

She is used to riding with me. If she can handle my driving, your was a walk in the park. However I did spook her a little a couple of times on 298 at the beginning. By the time we got to the end of it she was laughing cuz Ken and Jt were nowhere in sight behind us.

Not quite, but that's appropriate! Penelope Porsche is the 914. Chloe Carrera is the 911, Fred Ford the truck. We have no names for the other two... they don't have as much character.

Certainly not as much as a 27 Chevy!

Mail we received from crater of diamonds state park....

Diamond indicators at the Crater

By Waymon Cox

Greetings from Crater of Diamonds! A common question asked by many first-time park visitors is “Where’s the best place to look for diamonds?” Generally, we advise people to look anywhere in our plowed 37.5-acre field, as it includes the type of soil known to contain diamonds. But if you know about the “associates” of a diamond, you can narrow the search down a little more!
Certain minerals found at Crater of Diamonds State Park are known as “indicators” of diamonds. These minerals are helpful for geologists studying volcanic pipes around the world, and they are also useful for Crater visitors wanting to know whether they are digging in a good location.
Generally speaking, diamonds may be found anywhere in our search area, buried under the volcanic soil. However, as we’ve experienced time and again this summer, rainfall has a big effect on the search area through erosion. Diamonds are heavy for their size. Often they may be uncovered and left for some lucky visitor to find, while others are moved as rain washes through the field. These are then deposited in trenches and other low areas, along with other heavy stones including diamond indicators.
When digging in these low spots for diamonds, it is best to use a screen set and water to separate the gravel by size, then by weight, settling the “heavies” in the bottom-center of the screen. After the sifted material is dumped out of the screen, an accumulation of small, dense rocks and minerals can be found at the top-center of the pile.

Rocks and minerals are concentrated by weight when wet sifting.
When the material is thrown on a flat surface, diamonds and other heavy materials appear on top, near the center of the pile.

For many miners, the prospect of searching through this concentration for a diamond seems tremendous. But by looking closely, shiny, colorful treasures may be found which point the way to diamonds. Chromite spinel, chrome diopside, and pyrope garnet are all great indicators to look for!
Chromite spinel is the most common indicator mineral to find when wet sifting. Chromite is a black, opaque crystal with shiny irregular facets that formed in Earth’s mantle. Occasionally it may be found in an octahedral shape. Like other indicator minerals, chromite is fairly dense, with a specific gravity of about 4.5.
Chrome diopside is not as common as chromite, but it is easier to see. Chrome diopside is a diopside gemstone, with a characteristic lime green color. Like chromite, it is also found in very tiny pieces at the Crater. With a specific gravity between 3.25 and 3.55, it is closest to the diamond’s specific gravity of 3.52.
One of the best-known indicator minerals for diamonds is pyrope garnet. Pyrope is the only member of the garnet family to display a rich, red color in natural samples. Formed under similar conditions as diamonds, pyrope is often used by geologists when pinpointing the locations of hard-to-find lamproite and kimberlite volcanic pipes. Pyrope garnets have a specific gravity of 3.78 and are – once again – very small crystals at the Crater, transparent in appearance, with a reddish-purple color.

Minerals such as chromite spinel (black), chrome diopside (green), and pyrope garnet (red) have similar specific gravities to diamond.

All three of these serve as very good indicators for diamonds but should not be taken as a guarantee of a diamond find. Instead, they should be seen as what they really are – beautiful and unique tiny treasures from Crater of Diamonds State Park!

Search area last plowed: August 26, 2009

Diamond finds for September 7 - 8, 2009:

September 7 – Sharrol Frederick, Sherwood, AR, 9 pt. white; Denis Tyrrell, Murfreesboro, AR, 40 pt. yellow; Glenn Worthington, Springdale, AR, 4 pt. white

September 8 – Ryan Retzloff, Indianapolis, IN, 19 pt. white

(No diamonds have been found since September 8.)

Rain is good when hunting Arkansas diamonds but the blue clay thediamonds are found in is mostly Arkansas Gumbo so take rubber boots you can take off. Scraper too. When I left the crater diamond pipe area one time there was a steady drizzle. I was about 4 or 5 inches taller as I got back to the parking area than when I went in. My 914 looked lower to the ground from the new discovered height. I took a 100# sack of the blue clay home and screened it.

Please...Don't try driving your 914 with the gumbo mud still packed on the bottom of your footware. The Gumbo is slicker than grease and sticks better than Betty's 914 doing a autocross. Use an ice scraper. Everyone usually has one.

Plastic rain panchos (shorties) are cheaper where you live so take a couple of spare ones. Hey don't forget the Jalapeno Cheeto's either. Fire will be good as you drive back to the base for an evening of diamond professional who now chit chat.

I don't recommend anyone thinking of treasure in many of the creek trenches outside the park. I did and got lost for about 3 hours. Saw about 80 deer and a couple of what could have been "Bigfoot" near the banks of the river nearby. If you do venture and get lost, climb high in a tree and start yelling you found a big one and someone will hear you and rescue your diamond find. Being a liar is better than being some foul smelling and BIG hairy animal grub.

Have fun and find another " Star of Arkansas". Pictures are required if you want to show your feet to the ones who couldn't go and share the real fun cause nobody is going to believe, especially any short people (5'6" or so) who are almost 6 feet tall exiting from their MUSR Diamond Trek.

Remember, the term when night fell. It was likely 1st said there in that area of the South.
Leave well before dark and have fun. I sure did as this happened way back when the 914 adventures was still new to me.

914 memories outlast the rust.

Been raining every day. Had a little break this afternoon. Still under flash flood warning. I have already found the Cajun Broiler and done the Mid America Museum. Waiting for it to clear up enough to go up in the tower to see the country side. Went down toward Mt Ida looking for crystals. I brought my mining bucket from the house.
