Dave is a bit busy right now, so I'm going to take the torch and see if there is interest in a repeat of last year's run.
The date can be a bit tricky... October 10th would be the "same" day as last year, which worked out good with the weather, but the leaves were not really turning yet. The catch is, the later we wait, the less likely we are to have nice weather. So... I'm open for suggestions as to the date.
My 914 is still in pieces, so I won't have mine there... I'll either drive my truck as a support vehicle, or bum a ride in a teener.
Any nice October weekend day works for me.
Steve
I am interested! Should be able to make it. Any weekend in October just nail down a date that works for the majority.
Sounds awesome. I'm in! Let me know if I can lend a hand with anything.
-duc
Most any weekend in October should be good for me.
Jerry
I can't guarantee either, but the 17th sounds better to me.
I don't know if this sounds like a good gorge destination, but I stopped by here a couple weeks ago on my motorcycle :
http://www.route30classics.com/
Neat little place, half way between The Dalles & Hood River, with Ice cream and espresso and lots of Porsche paraphernalia. I think he advertises here or something. I found his web site from 914World some how. Nice guy... beautiful 914 & wicked cool 356 owner.
Coy's ALIVE
Good to see you back Coy. Hope all is well. Be cool if you can make it with the wife again. I think I'll bring my wife along this time myself
I believe my October is open. Consider me "in".
Great timing -- I just put in a new fuel pump
Any Saturday works, but the 10th would be best.
I second the drive to route 30 classics -- escpecially since we shouldn't have any trouble passing any vanagons on we meet on the way
I'm in and the 17th sounds like a good date.
I may be interested, the 10th OK
I'm in for the 10th. I may be able to do the 17th, but I'm not sure.
I'm feeling inspired to get my v8 914 ready for this drive! I'm hoping the 17th will be the day though. These get togethers just get me pumped to have more
Seems like there is a bit more interest for the 17th, and seems like there is interest in the drive to Mosier to visit Route 20 Classics. Jakodoule and I are going to get together to plan a route. Nothing is firm yet, so if you have something to say... say it now!
this sounds like a great excuse to get a way from the shop...again
keep me posted!
Sounds like fun!! My schedule is pretty fluid so whenever is good, I'll try and be there.
NORD, Steve and other north enders: when the day comes, we should all drive down as a group.
Todd
You have to pick the DATE, the weekend of 10th or 17th will work for me.
We already have three North enders planning to come, No rain, can you
Garrantee nice weather?
NORD
this would be a lot of fun Tod if you need some help of sorts let me know....
as much as i can do from up here!!
Okay, we're going to call it the 17th. I talked with John over a couple beers last night, and we have some ideas for a route. I'm looking for a good spot to meet up in the morning and a good place to stop for lunch. We'll meet up at 8:45-9:00 and hit the road at 9:14. Any out of town guys that want to drive in on Friday and need a place to crash, either John or I can accommodate. It's gonna be a blast!
this would be fun to make if I can swing it. I have been working way too much. I need a break. Here's to hoping I can go
Man wasn't there a NO BOvey Clause somewhere in there
Ah just kidding. Be nice to see you again. It's been like 3 weeks & I'm having withdrawls . I may even have my v8 back on the road for it. I'm holding out hope I'll have my LE back in time. While I am holding onto hope I am not holding my breath. I was supposed to have it back in July too
Either way I am driving a 914 if it has to be my rusted 73
I'm in!
I can't do the 10th need to be in Indy for a wedding, but the 17th could work. Won't be in a teener unless I thumb a ride, but I could bring out the silver car.
I'd like to see the route 30 shop if it fits in the plans
The drive that we are looking at will take us to Route 30. I plan on calling Stephen, the owner, to let him know that we are coming.
this sounds kinda like fun!!!
oct 17...it could be cold but i guesse there are always blankets, thermal undies and woolie socks,
do i remember seeing heated seat pads somewhere??
this sounds like fun!!
Thats opening day Buck season !! Sorry guys i will not be there
What's the difference of waiting a week?
The only people I know that did that are the ame people who would wait in line all night to get something they "had to have" when they could just wait a week and go get it without the wait. Besides, if you mis opening day you get past te day that has the most accidental shootings every year .
17th looks good to me now.
Okay... we have a route. Let's see what you think....
Start in old town Troutdale, just off I-84. Leave at 9:14 AM. We'll stop in Mosier at Route 30 Classics at about 1:30 PM. I don't have a lunch plan yet... the route is mostly through the boonies. I might just make sack lunches for everyone that signs up, if that works.
The route is 227 miles, should take about 5 hours plus stops. I imagine we'd get back to Troutdale between 3:00 and 4:00 PM. I live about 5 miles from Troutdale, so anyone that wants to crash here on the night before or after is welcome.
For comparison, last year's route was about 125 miles.

What say you all?
Todd, the route looks good. Thanks for putting this together!
For those of us who didn't attend last year, could you give us an idea of what the driving was like? Spirited? Leisurely? Tight caravan or pretty spread out? Is the same planned for this year?
This will be fun. Can't wait!
-duc
Allot of what we did last year was fairly busy with traffic as well as patrolled. It was a very nice drive but for the most part just a cruise. I would say the route Todd and I have got for this year will have some places where you will be able to rip it up if you want to. The stuff into and out of Tygh Valley is really cool with open canyons and switch backs. Nice smooth curvy pavement with wide open lines of sight. Great photo's. I have been on this route many, many times on sportbikes and I think you'll love it. Some of it will be a cruise (up to Mt Hood) and some of it will be good for more spirited driving. I would second Todd's idea of packing lunch. There is a super nice area for a picnic right on the Deschutes river just outside of Tygh Valley. If you look on the map it would be where we go east for alittle bit and then turn around. Its a cool waterfall and nice park right on the river.
BTW I will NOT be writing the directions......
Any out of towners are welcome to crash/camp at my place as well.
Hopefully I'll get my car running by then.. Or I may do this route again on my Ducati.
Sounds very good! I'm not sure I'll have my v8 ready. Be pretty tight. I also am picking up my LE next saturday. Finally painted & ready to go . I could probably have it going enough for the drive theoretically. I'd have to throw my 76 2.0 motor in temporarily though . As usual I have no idea what I can get done in the next few weeks. If life wasn't so dang busy I could get more done
I am a maybe.
Dave
I just fired a warning to Stephen at Route 30. I invited him to drive along with us, or just prepare for the onslaught.
tHATS GONNA BE FUN ...dANG I WISH I COULD BE THERE
F`n cap locks
Stephen is excited that we are coming! He had 20 Audi TTs visit him today.
Just depends on if I can get the time off I am trying to make it though
I am not going to be able to make it. We have a big family thing at the coast that I thought was on the 10th, but is actually the weekend of the 17th.
Yes, I did originally say I would prefer the 17th.
There's always next year...
Probably can't make the tour that day but I will try to at least meet up with you guys in Troutdale in the morning to say hello. Would be nice to meet you guys and check out yer cars. Paul S.
Hey anybody with time to kill is welcome to come to my house this saturday (10th). I'll be working on the LE. Trying to get it driveable for the tour. I'll be working on it till about 3pm. I'll be going to the Beaver game at 4. Think I am going to pull my 73 2.0 drivetrain & throw it in temporarily.
Really looking forward to the drive. I just hope I can do it in my LE Time is short but we shall see. I won't have it finished by any means. Just hopefully driveable
Just a
A little over a week away!
Heck, with this weather, I'm driving this weekend (but not the whole route)!
Yeah man I can't wait. I'm hoping to get my LE going in time. We'll see how much I get done this weekend . Supposedly my motor was close to being done. He said he could button it up today. Except I need a new oil pump? I'll find out more tommorow. Oh & I have to find someone to install my new windshield. I've got to call on that tommorow too
Just received the schedule for next week and they have me down for a bouble on Saturday
On the bright side, I have an interview for a job with a good friend's company and it may give me a regular 9 to 5 job. So the next function I can make
Definitely
I really want to see your car as well.. I have seen your others and they were beautiful.
Actually, that weekend may be nice... but forecasts that far out are only about 10% accurate. Kinda like my speedometer...
The tour will hit both side of the mountains, so even if it's raining on one end, it may be nice on the other...
As of right now, the forecast is Portland rain, Mosier partly cloudy.
Who can we expect at this point?
unfortunately, I'm out. A family thing came up for Friday evening and I can't/won't be getting out of it. I'd have to leave at like 3am from here just to make the start. . . That is not happening
Maybe next year. . .
I'm still in the but the odds of the LE making it are not to good. No drivetrain yet. Besides that I still need to install my new windshield. I've got alot of misc seals to put on. Oh & I typically don't get home from work until like 6. Family stuff wipes out most evenings. I may consider taking friday off work if I can get my motor before. If so that would mean the drive would be breaking in my motor. Not opposed to that but the odds of me getting it all in on friday & working enough to trust driving it all day. Probably not gonna happen. Still I've been known to be dumb enough to pull something like that off. Not real crazy about having the LE's maiden voyage involve rain .
I may just bring the wife in the MDX. I would say I am still a 90% at coming
Just slap the motor in and go ...you really legally dont need a windscreen you can wear swim`n goggles ...lmao .......have fun guys and drive safe
I am looking at changing the route depending on weather/snow up on Mt Hood.
I have an alternate route out the gorge cross at bridge of the gods. Then up to Glenwood then east round through Glenwood canyon and down along the Kickitat river. very curvy and would get us out of the rain faster and into eastern WA/OR quicker. Little shorter but still ends up at that Porsche shop. Then we can cruise the Columbia Historic Hwy on the way back for those that want to. Those that are in a hurry can rip back on the Fwy.
We'll just wait and see what the weather is like.
I am most likely out. My brother in law was in a bad car accident about a month ago and has no feeling from the waist down. We visit him on Saturdays in Portland ( I live in Silverton long drive). Then Grandpas B-Day after that.
Most likely still in at this point...
I drove in the snow once for 3 hours in my first 914. I was meeting my family in Lincoln city & we were living in Monmouth a the time. Typically a 45minute drive. It was in late january & I decided on a whim to drive my 914.
I had literally just gotten it back from getting painted. It was the last step in my restoraion of that car. Weather was cold but not bad. Sure as hell didn't hear anything about the possibility of snow. I get to lincoln city & all is good. We are sitting in a restaurant having dinner. I look out on the beach & damned if it doesn't start snowing. I am so amazed as I have never seen snow at the coast. It was coming down hard & sticking on the beach. Total insanity! While I am sitting there in amazement I get a call from work. Turns out I need to head back early. No problem as we were done eating. Then it dawns on me I am in my 914 . Still I figure it's a fluke & I won't find it once on the road. NOT! I never would have really considered any of the beach runs having a real pass. I never left second & the ride home was pure hell. Defrost didn't work for shit. So I spent the drive home hunched over looking thru maybe a foot & a half arch in my windshield. Me in my new paint following these people that can't drive in the snow . I was so tense when I got home. I parked my car back in the garage & walked the mile to work just to try to loosen up. Still my alltime worst experience in my 914.
There really is hardly any chance of snow. I just mentioned I was thinking of a dif. route. It is warming up as the week goes on anyway. Unless we drove up past Timberline lodge onto the glacier, I'm pretty sure there's a snow balls chance in hell we would end up driving in the snow. I I drove a 914 all winter in MN once and it went pretty good unless it got deep. Defrost suck though and I just kept a towel for the windshield.
I didn't mean to scare anyone, I was really was just thinking if we went out the gorge we could get out of the rain faster.
Plan: A common point from which to deviate.
Okay so I am finally saying the LE is NOT going to be ready by saturday. I am still planning on coming & bringing my wife. I'm only going to do it if there is a good turnout though. Otherwise I should just work on the LE.
So what is the headcount again?
I may need to work. Hopefully I'll know soon
I'm not going to make it after all. I have to work. I'm really bummed.
I wouldn't be opposed to a reschedule. I do have a beavers game next saturday. I'd hate to have to give my tickets away. I suppose I could sell them. This is the forst year I've gotten season tickets & I allready missed one game. Great seats to 3rd row from the field & on the 35. It is the old side of the stadium but the seats rock. So I don't know if I would go next week. If I had my LE running I would say screw it & go. If I didn't have it finished I would go to the game instead.
So don't change the date for me. I am still up for saturday but I would rather make the drive in a 914. I promised my wife she could go though. That means following in the MDX. I can do that but if no one else is bringing their wife. I am not sure this is the time to bring her. In which case I could hop in someone else's car.
If you reschedule it I can come
Then again, you may not want to reschedule it because of that
I'm fine with rescheduling. I would rather there be more than 2 or 3 teeners. Thats kinda the point..
My car is ready. I think Tod is right though about the weather. It'll be a crap shoot any weekend for here on. We could just call it and plan a nice big one for the spring. Then everyone can work to that date with the winter projects.
I can go for sure next week.
Heck I was way off. Next week the Beavers are down in Cali playing USC. Games not on until 5 so I'll be good to go next week. If it works out thats cool. Weather will definately be a crapshoot. As long as it isn't snowing I'd be good. I should be good for the LE next week. Especially having saturday to work on it. I'm picking my motor up friday after work. I'll put everything on it & hopefully get it up in my car this weekend
That is still a best case scenario but I'm trying to stay optimistic
Okay, I'll make the call...
OFFICIALLY RESCHEDULED for 24 October
I am glad to hear that this has been rescheduled!
I should be able to make it on the 24th.
I am stoked! Picking up my engine after work tommorow! Now my saturday is open to get it all ready to put in . Typical me I had a perfect clutch setup for it. I think I gave it away at the last swap meet . Now I get to go buy a new one . Then It will probably turn up. My garage is just s huge mess right now. It usually is but it is just worse than normal.
Ah but soon
Thats fine with me, I should be able to attend next weekend.
Have to do a little shuffling with the wife's plans.....
oh man..... I don't know if I can that weekend as that is my last weekend at Gordon Biersch. Maybe I won't be scheduled . If I am I will try to switch. I really want to go.
I may have a family thing 10/24... but Okay.
I'll be there!
Weather.com's forecast is not looking favorable, but they're never right this far out anyhow. Cold is fine - I just hope it'll be dry.
-duc
Crap!!!! ok, I cant miss this so I'll make it work.
I guess I'll have to go to the wifes dinner party after all, this weekend. HAHAHA
Okay, so I was in Chicago all week and Lincoln city most of the weekend... It looks like we're going to try & do this next Saturday, correct? I can't commit yet, but let me see...
I'm glad we rescheduled! This was Saturday, looking out my window:
(Of course, this weekend may not be any better. Fingers crossed!)
Attached image(s)
I'm in... at least for some of it. Wife has plans that I'm going to ruin part of. Oh well...
Hey Todd have you decided on a rally point yet?
My wife & I will be there. Looking more like in the MDX but still holding out hope. I've got alot to do to the LE to have it ready. Still a chance but it is slight. Don't have my motor yet. Supposed to be able to pick it up tonight but we'll see. Which means install on friday if I am lucky.
Either way looking forward to the drive saturday. Hope there will be a few other women coming. See you all soon- Jamie
Well, my last weekend at the restaurant will be keeping me away once again. Sorry guys. I wish I could make it but the finances are tight until I start my new job and I can't give up the two Saturday shifts right now.
Have fun and be safe.
Saturday's weather forecast as of right now - 58° and 10% chance of rain.
Todd you mention bringing a sack lunch. Are we not going to be near any places to eat?
A picnic does sound nice!!
Right now it looks like me & my daughter Shelby will try & make it. My wife already has a date planned with my son...
What time are we meeting up in Troutdale?
I am not coming in my LE . Oh well it was pushing it anyway. I'll be coming with my wife for a nice drive. Picnic is fine but really wouldn't mind stopping somewhere for chow if there is a place. Coy we'll have to caravan up. Call you to figure it out tommorow
Falling leaf tour here we come (okay in another day anyway)
My Daughter & I will be in my 74 914. I might not be able to spend the entire day.
I don't know where Glenwood is. Is that on the Washington side? What time will we get to Route 30 and what time will we head back on the Columbia Historic Hwy?
Sorry but I am out... I still have some friends from Itay here and my teener is still giving me the business. Last weekend was the one for me. I have laid out the second route so you guys can choose between the two. The first one over Mt hood is longer and some of it is in the sticks. The second route is a little shorter and there are plenty of places for lunch along the gorge. the loop up to glenwood and back down the Klickitat river doesn't have many places to eat, but along hwy 14 in gorge there are little towns every 10 or 30 miles. If you choose this route this is THE part of the route not to miss. The Glenwood canyon is awesome and the klickitat river road is sweet.
I will still meet up with you guys at 9. I have some parts from Drew.
The Second route

Sorry to hear you can't make it, John.
With a little modification to the original route, I think we can plan on lunch in The Dalles... Burgerville..., and then hit Route 30 Classics shortly after.
I expect that we should be back in Troutdale no later than 3PM.
Tomorrow still shows 10% chance of rain for the whole route. That's about as good as it gets this time of year!
Don't think I am going to be able to make it. Wife is not sure she wants to be in a 914 for 7+ hours. Silverton to Troudale then 5hr drive.
Might be able to talk her into going to the Dalles and back. We will see. If you see me at 9am then that's the plan and if not I am a no show (don't wait up)
I will be there in our Acura MDX with my wife
+ 2 914s & spouses.
I was screwing aorund with my 73 2.0 last night thinking I could just get it running & take it. Forgot about the fact that while I got my FI working. I didn't have any flippin brakes. They were froze up when I got it. Guy pulled the pads so it could move. Minor technicalities . After working to get my LE going it was my motor not being done that screwed me. Should have had it last weekend. Didn't happen so instead of just working on the 73 instead I waited hoping to get my motor for the LE. Really wanted to drive a 914 tommorow .
I'll have to be content following some
Anyone wanting to caravan I am up for it. give me a call 5four1-5one0-00eight6 Jamie
If your looking for a shorter route, instead of cutting up the first route I would take the second route. The best part of the first route is the stuff east of Tygh Valley. If you cut that out, then the route is not that great.
The second route is only a 150 miles around and back to Route 30. then 50 or so back to troutdale. That stuff up to Glenwood and east is really nice. Then the road back down the Kickitat river really is a sweet drive right on the river. I would recomend that route for your guys.
I wish I could go.
I'll see you at the start anyway.

I'm bailing out too. Just too worn out this week. I enjoy work, but this week has been a little too much for my bones. It was awful hard to get up this morning and I afraid the long drive (even in a smooth car) wouldn't be any fun.
Works for me.... caveat being that we have to make good time on that route. We have to be at Route 30 Classics between 1:00 and 1:30. That gives us 4 hours, which is what Mapquest says the drive should take... but that does not allow time for lunch, and puts us on I-84 instead of the Historic Highway past the waterfalls.
My phone is 5zero3 7zero9 1two9five in case anyone is running late.
you could shave some time by taking 84 to hood river then back tracking alittle on 14 to catch the road up towards trout lake and Glenwood. That will save at least 30 minutes of HWY 14 as well as the toll on bridge of the gods.
I don't think it will take 4 hours. Its only 150 miles...
Then on the way back anyone who wants can do the historic hwy and waterfalls
Coy yeah we'll meet at that exit at 7:30.
I also was bummed about not being able to bring my car. I decided to rent something a little sportier than my MDX. I got a 08 mitsubishi Spyder. Should make for a little better drive in that. I am stoked for tommorow See you all soon
Okay guys since I can't make it I hope someone is going to take pictures! Because we all know that
Have fun! The wife and I will be there in the 914 next year!
*sigh* Family.
sorry guys.
Let's plan a "Welcome Summer!" run...
Yes! I am just getting my fat ass up. Be heading out here in a few minutes! See you in a few Coy
Hope we have a good turn out. Be nice to have a good showing of 914's. Sucks I can't drive mine. Still want my wife to see as many as possible.
Just got home... what a blast! Ten teeners showed up, plus Jamie, John and me. More later, and photos tomorrow (hopefully)...
For now, thanks Ryan for the ride and letting my drive your car!
It was a good time for sure. Thanks to everyone that showed. HUGE thanks to Todd & John for planning it .
The Route 30 stop was great too! Nice place Stephen Thanks for opening up for us. Wish I could have been there in my 914 but maybe next time .
My wife had a good time at the event too. Really was the first time I have taken her along. She had fun & enjoyed meeting everyone. She isn't super outgoing so thanks to everyone for saying hello. She has very bad hearing & although the hearing aids help tremendously. She still misses alot of things. If anyone tried to talk to her & thought she ignored you. She just didn't hear you .
We did have one casualty. Jeff from Kfalls lost a ujoint (I'm thinking he meant CV ) Anyway he got a tow back to Portland & was able to get parts to fix it. When I called him on the way back thru Portland he was on the road again heading home. Sorry you didn't get to enjoy the drive with the rest of us
Again thanks to everyone for a great day. It was great meeting all of you
What a fantastic day I missed...
It was great seeing everyone and a blast while I lasted.
We took our time and still got back to Salem before 2:00
Thanks for a really great day Todd & John!
What a great drive! Thanks, John & Todd, for putting this together. And thanks, Stephen, for hosting us at Route30Classics. Good meeting everyone! It's great to have faces to match up to usernames now. Can't wait for the next get-together.

Geez, thanks, Todd! I look like I'm touching myself in one photo...and ticked off in another! I told you I wasn't photogenic and that you should've deleted those shots
Thanks for capturing today's outing - the photos are beautiful!

Thanks for planning this great event Todd and thanks to John for the great route.
What a fun day and the weather couldn't have been any better!
Thanks number6 for letting me drive your car.
Gorgeous day+ beautiful cars+ awesome roads+ terrific people= one helluva good time.
Thank you to everyone that participated. Special thanks to those that set up the event. My son and I both had a great time.
