914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Fuel gauge repair

Anyone taken their fuel gauge apart? I just filled my new-to-me '71, and it only reads 3/4. I know some Smiths gauges are dual magnet instead of the moving coil type, and these magnets can be adjusted. Same on the 914 fuel gauge?

If not, any other likely repair job on adjusting it? It seems to read low at both ends of the scale. I had it just about at R and the light wasn't coming on.

I would first check it more thoroughly. Did you have the tank full?? If the fuel was not all the way up into the filler neck itself, you still had room in the tank. Most modern fuel pumps will do their auto-shutoff thing when the 914 tank is only 3/4 full. Sometimes less!

You can run a fuel line into a catch tank and jumper the fuel pump relay to pump the tank dry. See what the gauge reads at that point. The warning light is generally more reliable than the gauge, but you might want to check to see if it works at all either.
