yes it is.
I've seen the side vents used and I like them. Other than one more place for dust & dirt to collect, if routed to a peticular place I think they'd serve a purpose for cooling.
I dunno it just seems logical

What do you need side vents for when you can can take the top off (dumb ass remark).
Or let the rust holes do the work (dummer).
If its a intake opening for a turbo, its waay cool. For anyother reason, ricer.....baaad.

Screw that! If you can direct cooler dense air directly into your motor instead of sucking hot air from around the engine compartment what do you get ... MORE POWER!
I recall seeing an artical way in the past in EC (or perhaps it was still VW& Porsche) of a 914 drop top conversion that had side vents. They extended out the mold of the door handle scallop until it ended in an elipse/hole into the engine bay. Painted that area black and it looked ...factory!
Figure in the oem airbox fitted with an additional reversed intake horn w/ hose to those vents ...WALA!
Im going to see if I can come up with that issue. If I can find it Ill post the pics.

Chuck Davis did a study on this a few years ago. It helped alittle bit but was nothing earthshaking. I'd have to look up his website if you want it.
Taking the raincover off lowered the engine air temp by 10 degrees. That one I have tried and it does make a difference in oil temps in the summer by 10 degrees.
Take off the f***ing air cleaner assemby to get 1-2hp if you want cheap hp.

& as you and I Goeff, live in the land of Single Mom's and RUST, The rain tray stays on. I just think this is one area of the 14's design that wasnt thought through. If you look at contemporary mid-engine cars (MR2, Bosxter ect), they all have cool air intakes on thier sides. As for additional performance, Sportbikes have been using presureized air-boxes and ram air ducting for years ..with great success!

THere was a guy who had a 914 with a V6 buick engine in it.
He'd cut in scoops on the side of the machine, even though it had GT flares, IIRC.
He's set up one side to be the intake for Plant, and the other to provide aditional cooling, and to balance the body work, much like the Boxster.
Also I recall another person discussing the feasability of using a small 1.8 turbo plant from a VW. They's thought to hang 2 radiators on the side of the engine bay using scoops to provide air to the radiators. I don't know if it would work personally, but if I had a 914 to convert to a water pumper, its what I would consider.

That's Phil Haun's car you're talking about. He lives in Oak Harbor up north. Very nice car as I have seen it several times, never rode in it thou.
I DO take the raintray out about June 1st as it does help. I think the Porsche never thought that they were going to have a 100hp 4 cyl in the car and the six has a much better fan setup so the design works atleast until you modify it.

Phil's car has the side vent from Toyota MR2. you can pick one up at the local pick-a-part. I picked one once...Then sold it at a swap when I decided it was too much for a car with only 4 cylinders.

Charlie Davis has a couple of naca-type ducts on his car. One on the sail panel to duct air into the engine. Also, on the rocker, to do the same, I believe.

There's a picture of a blue flared (not GT) car that has naca ducts in the rear quarters somewhere in the reader's ride link.
ok, i just went and had a look at the MR2 vents (on a MR2). i doubt they would be very beneficial on a 914. they mount flat, they're NOT scoops unless you would mount them in a angle, like 45+ degrees or so. if you mount them flat, they would not push air into the engine compartment. in fact, the air going by would create a under-pressure and suck air out of the engine-comp! even if you run a closed tube from the vent to the air intake, you'd still have the engine sucking against the under-pressure on the outside. not good. now, if someone had a additional scoop-like cover that would go over the vent on the outside, that would work. and probably look pretty stupid ...

I just picked up a engine cover that has louvers stamped into it. should add more cool air into eng bay but not much water. there is a lot of turbulance there. trying to lower oil temp on long drives.
