914World.com _ FS/WANTED: 914 Cars and Rollers _ FS - 1970 914-6 Full Concours Car, Ready to Show

Posted by: toolguy Nov 5 2013, 10:20 AM

The time has come. . Another Concour year completed. . . I've showed this for the last 2 years and had great results. . . My enjoyment was in restoring this Six and showing it . . Now I want to move on to a new project. . .

Currently 22,537 miles on car, 401 miles since professional rotisserie restoration in 2011-2012 {fully documented}. Driven only for PCA shows / events and to sort out engine and trans. . Always trailered to events. . Consistent Full Concour 1st place class winner in all 2012 events. In 2013, I entered it in only 2 Zone 8 Concours and took BEST of SHOW both times, scoring 324.6 out of 325 points. This is a highest standards, no excuse vehicle. All number match, fresh engine and trans broken in and sorted out. Currently ready to compete in next years PCA Concour series.

Every level of detail was addressed, down to the fabric seat belt labels. . Originality was my goal, and the car shows it. My intentions were to show it in PCA Concours and be a reliable driver after a few years of shows. The original 2.0 engine was seeping, so it was split, the case halves surfaced and line bored. Total stock rebuild with E cams added, all new main and rod bearings, chains and tensioners, rings and a full valve job including new guides. All rotating parts balanced to within 1 gram/. . .The trans was also pulled apart for inspection, has all new syncros, and resealed. . Correct 14 x 5.5 inch Fuchs, spare rim looks like it has never been used.

Non stock items. . . . I wanted the car to also be fun driver in the future, so I put an SC suspension with 3.5 brakes on the front, with a 20mm front sway bar and a stock rear sway bar. . Konis in front with 19 mm torsion bars and Bilsteins in the rear with 160 pound springs. It handles exceptionally well with good balance front to rear. . . {I do have the OE Six suspension with 3 inch brakes restored and preserved.} Currently has an LE front spoiler and late real valance to clear the muffler. . . . Other than those items, I kept it visually as manufactured / delivered. Includes the Six toolkit, original owners manual in unused perfect condition and the OE passenger footrest. . . Original Blaupunkt works perfectly. Also has 911S 40IDA Webbers and Sport Muffler. Runs very well with the E cams. It also has a 1970's Dealer optional Nardi wheel, and I do have the OEM Six wheel. I have the original Factory Six air cleaner and all US light lens put away. Tires are current production.

Price. . . . . Please consider I've got right at $60k invested at this point. Additionally there are over 1600 hours of professional restoration labor [13 months labor] to make this a very nice car, certainly one that would be hard to duplicate to this level of Concour preparation. I'm asking $87. Located in San Diego since new.

"I'm asking $87. Located in San Diego since new."

$87? I'll take it. J/K as I know you mean $87K.

Very, very, very sweet looking 6er.

Toolguy,
Beautiful restoration and worth the asking price. I believe we are looking at the $$-future of 914-6's (and 4's). I know it's not in the price range for most, but you can't restore one for your asking price. Someone with deep pockets will purchase it pray.gif Hope it stays in the USA.

$87K may seem like a lot- believe me it is not. Once you start adding up all of the parts and labor that go into something this painstakingly perfect you will see that this is a very fair price. The person who buys this car will have a terrific car. GLWTS. I love this car.

Posted by: R8CERX Nov 6 2013, 07:50 AM

I have seen his car in person- it is immaculate!

I posted some pictures of his car during the fleet week/Coronado races thread that we just had here in San Diego

Best of luck toolguy on the sale- keep us posted on sale

This is a spectacular car. All the best with the sale!!

Posted by: Chris H. Nov 7 2013, 11:30 AM

agree.gif That car will sell. Just need the right buyer so it might take time. Someone who wants a perfect car will see you can't build one today for that price. Great color, low miles, perfect condition, history, documented resto...awesome car.

Or...it could sell and go to the nearest port tomorrow... smilie_flagge6.gif

Hey guys, I think this 914-6 is under priced unsure.gif

Breakdown Estimate.
$50,000.00 NOS Parts
$15,000.00 Rebuilt 6-Motor.
$20,000.00 Misc. Stuff you never plan for.
$100,000.00 2,000 manhours of Paint & Body work. Note Scotty does not work cheap. rolleyes.gif

Total $185,000.00 BTW: In the real world this is what a typical high end restoration costs.

Awesome job!! The detail on that car is really nice to see, wish there were more pics of the car.
I'm going through a six as we speak, although not quite to that level, and it is not for the faint of heart!
I hope the cars stays here in the USA, but it will probably head back home.

More pics please. Without having seen this car in person, from the pictures I can understand the asking price. This is not just a car, it is a Class 1 restored marvel. You can buy a lesser car, spend the same money and still not equal this. Good luck with your sale.

Thanks to every with the kind words. . . the others apparently have no concept of the cost and effort it takes to restore and maintain a Full Concours car. . .
I've had some interest from a few qualified buyers, but not sold as of now. . .
The car was just awarded the PCA - San Diego Regions' Concour Car of the Year 2013. . .I drove it a few times in the last 2 months and it was really fun. . . I'll be getting it up on jacks and ready for the upcoming 2014 Zone 8 Concours series. . . Once that starts it will not be for sale again until the 2014 year is over. . Thinking about the Parade as it's reasonably close. . . More awards just means more provenance. .

And yes, I've got the necessary stock items, lights, valences etc to return it to pure stock form. .

For Parade you might have to put on the stock front valance. The rules for parade and Zone 8 are a bit different. I think you could win Parade this year ! Go for it !

Read the first page of initial posts and you can see that someone bought the car. I also talked to the seller and confirmed this otherwise I would have bought in.

Do we get to hear the long story? stirthepot.gif

Posted by: toolguy Mar 7 2014, 01:04 PM

long story.
Zack914 with 4 posts has been asking for a 914-6 for a while on the board. . I get an email about mine. . . we exchange info on the car.

He said his name is xxxxx and uses a email id in the same name. He says he just sold his business, has full cash available, and wants a nice 914-6 to drive . . . Red Flag No. 1. . . He takes the car at asking price and I include multiple spare original parts. We agree on a pick-up date one week out. I tell him I have a custom trailer available also and give him the price. He asks for pictures. . I send pictures of trailer with car on it. . .

. . . He calls back a few days later and now wants to beat me up on the price of the car AND the trailer. . . . We settled on the 'new' price.. . . Red Flag No.2
I pull all the spare parts and documentation and get the car ready to go. The night before pickup date, he calls and now wants a lower price/ / Red Flag No.3
I refused and hung up. .

2 hours later I get an email where he changes his last discount amount to a few hundred dollars. . mind you this is without seeing the car so that should have been another red flag warning to me. . I tell him be here by noon, with $$$ in hand or don't show up. . . . he said he can do that. He said he has the money wired to his account at the local Chase bank for us to pick up. . I say call when he's an hour away. he says OK, see you at noon. . .

Noon arrives and no show or call.. . 2 hours later there is a knock and here is a man and lady to look at the car. . introduces himself as Ryan. .no mention about not being here on time. . .

I show him the car, he looks for 4-5 minutes, asks a few questions, and he wants to hear it run. . I fire it off.. .

He then says it isn't what he wants..I ask what was the issues he saw and he declines politely to answer, just that was not what he wanted. . . OK I get that. . the lady addresses him by either Fred or Frank { either way, I'm certain that it wasn't Ryan} at one point in the conversation. . . Red Flag No.3 . . In my mind I go WTF.gif is this about and start to have some really bad feelings about the possibilities. . They leave. . .

SO my assumptions are now either
1 He's looking for something better,
2 - He's a lookey loo who doesn't know exactly what he really wants
3 - Hes a reseller looking to score low ball deal
4- OR, and most troubling to me, this is a scam of sorts. I call a police buddy, and get a warning about internet deals for high dollar cars where this 'car inspection' is really a chance to case the place for a future theft. .

At this point, I don't know his intentions and I may be all wet, but I certainly did not have a warm fuzzy feeling with this encounter.. . . Whatever the case, screw it, I'm keeping the car for the next year and I'm certain the price of real 6's will continue to climb if I decide to sell later. . or just start driving it myself. . .

Note-- In a subsequent conversation with Zach914 on 10-10-14, he said he was disappointed in my cars condition and was expecting something better. . Lesson in life, and to be fair to zach, it's all about ones individual perception and not any ulterior motives.

toolguy, be very vigilant around your house for the next few weeks, especially. They may have been looking around for something, your car, house break-in, etc.

Couple of years ago some guy showed up in an orange vest at my house and said he was there to check out trimming trees near the power lines for Edison. Didn't think anything about it because they do it every so often here, until my cars were rifled though in my driveway late at night a couple nights later and they tried to break into my garage. These guys went through the neighborhood that night and were stupid enough to come back the next week and get caught.

I learned that never leave your car unlocked in the driveway and don't trust anybody showing up at the house without getting their ID.

I'm not sure, but Could this be the guy who goes by Rosson512 over on The Club website. If the same fellow, he posted an alert about a 914/6 he went to see and it was not what he wanted. http://www.914club.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=383620

I bought the "used" emergency brake cables off this car while it was being restored. They maybe had 10 miles on them as far as I could tell. Reason they were being sold? The owner needed flawless cables to replace them for this restoration. As far as I'm concerned, I made off with NOS cables for 20 bucks!!! This is a GREAT 914-6!

Carry on!
