914World.com _ FS/WANTED: 914 Cars and Rollers _ SOLD 1971 2.0 FI $14.5K!

Posted by: ChristopherB Apr 29 2017, 09:43 PM

I am selling my 1971 914 to fund a more practical car to shuttle kids to scouts, kung fu, school and sports. I purchased the car in 2011, and have really enjoyed it. The car has always been garaged and only driven on sunny days. I own a car detailing business and have really enjoyed polishing the chrome trim as well as waxing this orange paint. It currently has two layers of Chemical Guys Lava as a finish. It has not been washed with a hose since I have owned it. The previous owner re built this car from the ground-up. I shipped the car to Tangerine Racing in 2016 for a variety of repairs, up-grades and re-powering. The car looks and runs great. It starts easily and idles perfectly. This car is not a show winner but it is a real looker that runs great. It is a blast to drive, and it gets a ton of attention. This is a solid car that will require zero work to enjoy all summer, fall, and the following spring, etc.
Details

1971 2.0 engine with FI
stock engine installed spring 2016 by Tangerine Racing
The following additional work was done by Tangerine last year:
SS fuel lines- full Tangerine kit
Fuel pump replaced and relocated
Tangerine exhaust, EVO II
new key- The key is a much needed new master key!
rust repairs to jam, and long as recommended by Chris (In fact, I did everything he recommended)
trunk release pull behind plate
new clutch and throttle cables
new clutch tube in tunnel
tuning
starter replaced
brake check and new brake fluid
parking brake cable install
headlight bulbs
I did pretty much everything Chris recommended. The rust repairs were minor and completed with this visit to Tangerine.

The work by the previous owner was extensive. The car has had everything replaced or repaired as needed. Here are some of the details from his ad. I deleted the engine details as Tangerine replaced the engine last year:

"Up for sale is my 71 914 2.0 ground up restoration well over $16,000 in receipts, the pan, inner rockers, suspension console and battery area have all been replaced, every part on the car is new.
Every rubber seal on the body and doors has been replaced.
Delrin race suspension bushings (all of them)
reinforced rear trailing arms
Stable Energies 6pt Roll cage
All Auto Meter Carbon Fiber series gauges
Heated 02 sensor with Air/Fuel ratio gauge (great for tuning)
Corbeau Seats with 4 point harnesses and Stable Energies harness bar
Momo Steering wheel
All engine tin has been powder coated orange intakes were coated with the Stealth coating as well
New fuel pump
New pads and rotors
911 master cylinder
SS brake lines
less then 8,000 miles on clutch
Big Bore throttle body done by Highperformancehouse.com
Minilite wheels
Hal Effect sending unit for speed O (no more cable)
Carbon Fiber look dash
new carpet
Front sway bar with drop links (I have rear sway bar just not installed) [attachmentid=602608]
SS outer rocker pannels (painted)"
I have lots of pictures of the build undertaken by the previous owner.
The FI harness is a "like new" refurbished unit from Jeff Bowlsby

You can see two videos of the car on the CFR Tangerine Racing Facebook page. I am now asking $14,500 for the car.
Give me a ring or text. 410-382-1930 I spent over $7,000 on various repairs all at Tangerine Racing in March 2016. I can forward these invoices to any person interested in the car.

Things that don't work or are not there.
No stereo
No wipers but they are included and the posts turn when activated
I recently replaced the turn signal relay but pulled it because it buzzed. I have a different relay.
No Heat
No rear view mirror. It is in the glove box.

Since the car returned from Tangerine, I replaced the shift linkage bushings as well as a new ground strap from the battery. The shift linkage bushing failed completely after some spirited driving once the car had the work completed last year. While not complicated, the job is not exactly simple. With the the new bushings installed combined with the new clutch tube, and clutch cable, the car shifts very well!

The tires are new as well. They were replaced in the spring of 2016.

I forgot to add that I have a lot of spare engine parts as well as other miscellaneous stuff. This will go with the car if desired at the asking price. 2.0 heads slightly damaged but definately repairable as well as a very nice stock lower valence. I know that not everyone is a fan of the snow plow lower valence on the car, and this piece is an easy fix. It is also nice to have this in case you hit a lip, curb, whatever and damage the fiberglass valence. Other engine parts are an unopened case, crank, webcam, connecting rods, fan, clutch, flywheel and more. It all fits nicely in the front trunk!

side with windshield decal. The thing hanging from the front bumper is orange hockey tape that I apply along the bottom edge of that low front valence. The tape keeps that edge looking nice(except when it hangs!) as it does get scraped up occasionally.

Another picture passenger side taken on a cloudy day. Paint looks a bit more tame on an overcast day. A sunny fall afternoon makes the finish explode with color. I love the black Minilites. They are my favorite looking wheel for the 914.

You have provided the first offer! LOL No, I am sorry, but I can't remove the front valence. I think it looks great on the car. I am surprised as well about not getting an offer yet. While the car is not original, it is a very nice example that drives great. The car had a thorough going over by Chris at Tangerine last year. I did everything he recommended and then some! The price on the car I think is quite fair and represents no profit on my part. Actually, like most of us, there was a lot of money and time spent on this car by myself and the previous owner that will never be recouped.

Thanks Andrew. The car was painted around 2000 and I have clayed, polished, and waxed it often. The paint doe have some very fine flake. I checked out the last two pages of your thread "1.8 turbo", in your signature and I see why you liked the color of my car! Great pictures with your wife and congrats on the girl. Having a daughter might be the best experience in life.

Under the battery is free of rust and solid as are the longs. Tangerine did do a very small repair to the long on the driver side in March of last year. This picture is rotated but corrects when you click on it. You can see part of the very nice refurbished FI harness from Jeff Bowlsby Attached Image

I have not gotten any serious offers on this fantastic car! I am really surprised by this especially considering the amount of money I spent Last year at Tangerine. (Approx $7K) Chris really got this car running superbly and it really needs nothing to be enjoyed this summer. I am ready to make a deal if anybody wants to make an offer!

video fail! I will try to get better video of the car on the road. This car needs nothing to hit the road and have fun. No rust issues and it starts right up regardless of the outside temperatures. Complete going over in 2016.

You could also consider Bring A Trailer

I did post the car locally on Craigslist. I got some interest but I had to field a bunch of calls from third party brokers. That was annoying. I really was hoping to find someone on the forum that would be delighted to have this car. I think at $14.5, it is a smart buy with a lot of extras. I did not consider Pelican but will look into it. I love the car, and don't "need" to sell it asap. I will wait for the right buyer. I have had a ton of interest, but just not a "good" offer.

The engine is an original 2.0 that I had installed by Tangerine Racing in spring 2016. The 2.0 rebuilt engine that was in the car when I purchased the car failed. The failure was diagnosed by Tangerine and the decision was made to replace the engine with a stock 2.0 they had on hand. Combined with the Fuel Injection system, the car starts, idles and runs wonderfully. Regardless of weather temperatures, or conditions, the car barks to life and is ready for service.

I have been loving the car more than ever in September! The afternoon sun on the finish is insane and the cool temps mean she is so happy. I won't budge on the price as the latest bump did generate some offers. Seeing some of the more recent listings makes me really scratch my head in a Homer Simpson sort of way!

Is the car still available? Would it be easy to remove the roll cage?

I still have the car. The cage is a bolt in unit from Stable Energies. It really doesn't interfere with driving at all.

Hi, what size tires are you running on your 914? Look nice and wide, with no fender
modification? huh.gif

I just read this entire thread..... WOW..... what a great car, at a great price.

Just a couple quick questions if you don't mind:

1) Are the bumpers fiberglass or metal? Have they been repaired at all with bondo? One of the first things I'd like to do is ship them off to be re-chromed (just a personal preference)

2) Have you repaired/installed any of the parts mentioned in this thread since the beginning? (Shifter bushing, rear sway bar, etc)

3) You're in Virginia... right?

The black bumpers are metal and have not been repaired to my knowledge.

I have installed some parts personally. However, (thankfully), the car was completely gone over by Tangerine Racing about 1.5/years ago. Since then, I have replaced the shift linkage bushing and the battery ground strap. I also replaced the turn signal relay with a new relay. That new relay buzzed so I pulled it. I have a different replacement relay that I have not installed.

I live just north of Baltimore.

Posted by: ChristopherB Dec 17 2017, 08:53 PM

I will check the bumpers with a magnet, but they are pretty nice. I don't suspect any issues there. Since getting the car back from Tangerine, I have had to address three problems. I was able to correct the problems personally. I lost 4th and 5th gears one morning on the way to the grocery store. This had me panicked as I had just spent $7K( spring 2016) on the car. However, the problem was the shift linkage bushing. While this is an inexpensive part, installation does require a bunch of elbow grease! The car shifts beautifully. This is especially true since Tangerine Racing welded a new clutch tube in place as well as installed a new clutch cable.

One day, (this time returning from the grocery store), the car stopped running. This again had me fearing the worst, and I was super worried. It took a few weeks to discover that the ground strap from the battery was bad. Once, replaced, the car has been glitch free.

My last problem was the turn signal relay. My turn signals stopped working. A quick message to Chris ( the best!) at Tangerine and I learned that the relay was bad. A new relay was purchased and installed by me. This solved the problem for only a few weeks. The relay buzzed and I pulled it. I have a different turn signal relay that I have not installed.

Since getting the car repaired at Tangerine Racing, it has been blast to drive. I have really mixed feelings about selling it. It is a great car to drive that I am quite proud to own. I do not need to sell the car, and I will only take $14K for the car with none of the extra parts. I have had offers that are close, but I am just not desperate to sell. In fact, I am terribly torn!

Obviously you're in no hurry to sell with how long it has been listed. If you're that torn and don't NEED to sell it, then why bother selling it at all?

I am not really "bothering". I have it listed here and it will go to a 914 enthusiast via this awesome forum. I am currently selling the car to get a car that I can drive any day of the week to take kids places regardless of the forecast. I only use the 914 on perfect days like a motorcycle. The replacement will most likely be a Miata, or a Cayman. Most likely my budget will afford the Miata. My goal is to have a fun car that my wife and me will both drive any day of the week.

Keep the 914 for sunny days and buy a Miata, that's what I did. The Miata is a brilliant fun car to drive, totally reliable and cheap to run, will never let you down. At the weekend, weather permitting, it's my 1974 2.0 914

The guy I bought my 914 from bought a running Miata with the money I paid for a non-running 914 sad.gif

Fun cars, just found out a fellow member here is stuffing a 3.6 Chevy/Cadillac DOHC V6 into his Miata, hope he shares pictures. Wish I lived closer to him!

Had that goal as well for my wife. As it turns out if you buy your wife a Boxster the issue is resolved but she does not ride in the 914 or Miata anymore.

That sounds great. The car has had most of its mileage done around the lake. I live right there so lets do it!

The car sold today. Thanks to everyone on this fantastic forum for their help over the years of ownership. This forum has some great people that are super smart! I came to rely on the collective knowledge here often. A special thanks to Chris Foley and his shop for the great work they did on my car. I will miss seeing the car in my garage. I really did love to look at the car as much as I did driving it! It is just beautiful to me. The car went to a great guy from Rhode Island and I think he will really enjoy it.

Finally! Hope the new owner joins the forum so we can keep track of it. Great car.

He has indeed joined already....ITS ME!! happy belated valentine's day to myself lol-2.gif

ChrisB was great, I had been lurking for awhile and he waited for me to find a day with no snow or other bad weather to go get/purchase it. Really nice guy and reasonable all around regarding the transaction and just generally to be around for a good part of the day during a PPI.

I've been tightening up some small items while I wait for the rain to stop here, and also following advice of some more prominent members on other items I'm currently addressing.

racked my head for a few weeks on the turn signal issue that is frequently on here and am giving up to move on to other things now.

Next weekend should be brake flush and rotors and pads and adjustments. maybe even an interior mirror [my forum interaction has mostly been in the WTB ad for the mirror base].

Then on to rear trailing arm bushings.

Anyway, hoping to introduce myself more formally and how I came down this path to 914s later this month.

even better - I work in Boston and have a crash pad on the outskirts of the city in your direction!

i'm sporadic on here to date while juggling life, was on a 10 day vacation recently, also trying to fit in overtime to fund some betterments on this one, and also do the work - lots of juggling. I'm planning to get a few things done this friday, and hoping to have it in MA next week. But that may suffer a 2 week delay if i don't complete all tasks friday. I don't much like the MA driving habits and want this thing a little safer [right now no turn signals, no rearview mirror, 30% brakes [fronts replaced last week], and a leaky fuel filler gasket], not to mention the road conditons here have me insecure about the front bumper.

stay tuned, PM me if you wish, but you will see it I promise.
