Lots of goodies here for someone on the west coast!

That’s a late model shell, not a 70. It looks like a 75-76. Something is not right here.

Posted by: 2mAn Oct 14 2018, 08:20 PM

bummer... I would love the seats and the fuel cell... no interest in selling stuff separately?

Sure isn't an early dash. The jack mount is later in the rear trunk and the car even comes with bubs.

Actually yes - there should be the matching chassis number stamped into the metal near the RHS front strut mounting. I believe there should be the Karmann build number stamped into the floor of the trunk too. Also, sticker and Karmann stamp on the inside of the drivers door. FYI.

agree.gif What does the vin number say in the front trunk picture (circled in red)? I bet it starts 475 or 476

In the rear trunk pics the jack holder (in red circles) indicate a late car. The two other areas with the arrows above them are from a 75 / 76 car with big bumpers. Based on the other items such as big bumpers, side dash vents, brick style pattern on door cards & dash face, what looks like a fuel pump opening behind the fuel cell in the front trunk picture, seat adjuster rake on passener side floor and more. This is a late car

These are not items that are easily swapped between model years.

Oopsie, looks like a VIN swap. The front trunk VIN tag should be on the right headlight bucket for a 70-74. 75 and 76’s has an additional tag where the tag is now. On a 75 76 the VIN tag should be on the first bulkhead to the right side. No pictures of the stamped VIN on the top of the right inner wheel housing?

It's not the worst thing in the world. I found out mine was swapped by the "restoration shop" that sold it to me. I've never had an issue but I wish I had known up front.

X2

- it's just a conversion project - so why the hell does anyone care about the year of the shell?

what you're buying is what you see

- with the benefit of a TITLE & appropriate VIN tags - - consider yourself lucky if it gets you to owning a streetable exempt 3.2 sixer free of legal hassles with DMV et al

i knew the P.O. and this car 'way back, i actually drove it when it was a 4-cyl when he was preparing to take it apart & i b'ot the very good driving sideshifter out of it back then
(still have that on the shelf - we can never have enuf good spares. eh?)

(i agree that the alu trunk tag is misplaced - that's kinda goofy)
see this www.914world.com/bbs2/sources/action_public/pop_helpvin.html

y'd have to pull the windshield to discover if that tag was moved - - i do not believe the P.O. ever replaced the windshield, so i'll guess he b'ot the car the way you see -

P.O. went thru a bunch of 914's back in the day (when we were all still buying 'em for $500 running) -

as a '70, it's exempt from SMOG in CA, which it would NOT not have been as a '75, and still not as a '76 titled conversion,

- surprised it has been in kept hiding & unfinished for so long

Posted by: zephyrblau Oct 17 2018, 02:24 PM

yep... 475 prefix number. I ran the stamped number through NMVTIS and received the response;

Sorry, VIN #4752904898 was not found.

hello Larry,
agreed. I was a student in the ROP program & ran a few cars through that facility. then life got in the way of more important things. eventually the county closed the body shop part of the program. these cars are WAY fun to drive & even more so w/ a larger engine.
IIRC even as a '75 it is smog exempt.

It's not the end of the world, but swapping vin tags is illegal and here in Indiana If (and I say IF) you are caught with this you will lose the car and maybe some $$ in fines or more.

Now who is really going to check, probably no one. This is still a good deal for the car & parts.

I don’t have any issues with my car (I didn’t know about the swap until 30 years after I purchased the car) but it’s always better to know those things up front, before you purchase.

per an offline request I did find this related to the fuel cell.

The cell is expired (lasts 5 years) and would have to go back to Fuel Safe for a new bladder and re certification.

Posted by: larryM Oct 20 2018, 11:23 PM

re: VIN #4752904898 was not found

not surprising - during those years CA-DMV simply dropped cars out of the database after something like 5 yrs of non-registration

there are more than a few threads here about that

- anything that was previously dropped out was not re-entered & essentially never existed

(unless one is dumb enuf to walk in with a 15+ yr old CA title on which the reg fees have not been paid for 10++ yrs)

many of us resurrected said "lost" derelict cars by throwing away the original Title & doing "application for new registration" process with a VIN Certification which avoided paying back fees & penalties -

iirc it's only been within maybe the past 8 yrs or less that the new DMV database has begun maintaining a database of cars out of registration for a longer period (maybe forever?) - seeking back fees of course

(a practice maybe coupled with CA-BAR's desire to rid the streets of smog-exempt anythings)

kind'a depends on whether one plans to race the car in a venue that checks for that

if one is just gonn'a AX. club track-day or street drive it - irrelevant

Posted by: zephyrblau Oct 21 2018, 04:19 PM

I may have to change my sales strategy. in order to drive the car that lives in the garage I have to shuffle the 914 to & fro. the novelty of doing that has worn off. the parts I can manage, but the car has to go.
