914World.com _ FS/WANTED: 914 Cars and Rollers _ Nelson's car is back to her Birthplace, and for sale.

Posted by: Series9 Sep 1 2021, 01:03 PM

Yep. Nelson lost his passion and did the honorable thing by sending her home for me to sort and sell for him.

There will be many more pictures soon, but here she is, freshly delivered from NM.

Starting price will be $65k.

I'm happy and sad. I want it to go to a good home. It's the finest car I've ever built.

3.2L, Nikasil, JE 10.5:1, Twin plug, PMO throttle bodies, custom fuel injection and ignition, rotisserie body build, steel flares. It's literally the only actual 'zero rust, zero accident' car I've done in 30 years of doing this.

As I always say: "Offered here first"..... because this is the first place it should be offered.

Nice car. I’ve read through the build a couple times. You might be too low. I bet it would bring $80k + on BAT

I appreciate that very much. Let me get it going again, driving and detailed. I'll see where it goes from there.

I'm trying to figure out how to put this, because it's a little emotional for me to have my work recognized in this way.

I just received a call from a world-famous racer who is interested in buying the car.

Because I have no deposits or commitments at this moment, I am choosing to give him first right of refusal.

I would love for him to own a piece of my work, but even if he passes, I'm extremely humbled to have received the call.

Please stand by.

You build a nice car. The compliment is deserved.

I had some difficulty maintaining my composure while I was on the phone. I asked "Am I speaking to THE ............". He took a moment, then said yes.

I'm still taking deep breaths.

Nelson's car is under contract.

I will ask the new owner if he's comfortable with me revealing his identity after I deliver it to him in a few weeks.

This place helped make me who I am in this specialty and I appreciate all of you very much.

Congrats, Joe - could you please send the link to your build thread?

Hey there! I'd chime in with a link to the build thread, only it doesn't exist because we used the ClubNARP board at the time of the build and ClubNARP board is gone. I wrestled with what to do before it left, but there did not seem to be a way to transfer that site's posts to this site, sadly. I did grab a ton of pictures to add to those that I had already taken myself or saved when Joe sent them to me as he was building it.

I really do have a ton of pictures. I could post them in another thread, but I don't want to flood this For Sale thread with pictures of the build. I dunno ... I'll mull it over with Joe. It would really take a long time to post all of those pictures. It might be worth it, but again ... I'll mull it over with him.

In the meantime, I can't wait for Joe to reveal who is buying my car. He is a legend.

- Jon Nelson

Way cool Joe. beerchug.gif

Does this guy have more Championship than your famous sky-diving race car driver? first.gif

Thanks, Jon and Joe - no worries, there’s no need to make more work for yourself by recreating a build thread - GLWTS!

My car was sold to Dick Barbour Performance. blink.gif Yes, THAT Dick Barbour. aktion035.gif Mr Barbour is a very nice guy to talk to, a consummate gentleman and humble considering his endurance racing history. I think he will be inducted into the Sebring hall of fame this year! Yeah. Slightly legendary.

He said he wants to “keep this one”, from what Joe O’Brien told me. When I talked to him, he was excited to have a 914 this nice and with this level of modification and restoration done to it. I’m so happy the car went to such a great home! His son Ales sent me this picture of Dick with the car. Says it all, really. shades.gif

Very cool! Congratulations to buyer, seller and builder!

Hopefully he keeps it and doesn't flip it....all the cars in that photo are currently for sale on his website.

Looks like Ol Dick Barbour might have lived up to his name (first name that is):

$88k takes it away

Posted by: mepstein Oct 21 2021, 12:51 PM

That didn’t take long.
Say what you will about flippers … it was sold between educated adults and the new owner has the right to do whatever he wants with his car.

I guess it isn't fair to call the guy a dick just for trying to make a buck and (to my knowledge) there were no shady dealings here. I just hate seeing people trying to squeeze every dollar out of a car and pricing a lot of enthusiasts out of the hobby but what can you do? Maybe UNICEF will get into the Porsche business

Definitely not fair, especially since this isn’t the sort of car that prices people out.

This is probably more of a comment on the air-cooled market in general. I guess the "value" is relative and even at the new price there is likely value for someone (def more value than some similarly priced 911's) but 90k is a lot of money no matter which way you slice it. I will be the first to say I don't have 90k kicking around for an extra car and I'm sure I'm not alone. Prices are up which is great for some people but is prohibitive for others. I am currently the latter.

Bottom line, prices are up, this car rules, someone got a good deal and is going to make a buck, I'm not a buyer, wish I was, the free market is what it is.

Agreed, but the pre-sale hype story did not match the outcome, and that was unexpected.

Well I agree that there seems to be a lack of integrity from the buyer.
Too bad he won’t get to experience the great 914 community.

I think that's what is rubbing me the wrong way here. This thing was listed here for a very good price with the intention (at least it seemed to me) of keeping it in the enthusiast community. It was purchased under the guise of being a keeper by an undoubted enthusiast and then pops up real fast for a 35% mark-up.

I like a flip as much as the next person but I try not to do it under the guise of it being a keeper. I also don't have his kind of reputation to throw around either.

Hopefully the next owner will get a break on the new price and join this great community.

Posted by: Tdskip Oct 22 2021, 09:32 AM

I would agree that it’s not good hygiene to misrepresent your intentions in anyway when buying or selling but I’m not sure we should be in the business of telling someone what they can do with their money.

Well said. If there's any consolation, he still ain't sold it. That's really the only way to curb flipping, just don't buy it and let him think about his money being tied up and the possibility of no ROI. It's such a shame too, because it's an incredible car. Belongs with someone who's going to take care of her.

He listed it on eBay for 88k. Even if he gets the full amount, he will only see 77k after eBay fees. There is still an opportunity for a 914world member to approach him separately outside of eBay and get it closer to the after fee amount.

eBay only charges $75 or so to list a vehicle, not the normal ~12-13%. I just sold 2 vehicles in the last couple months on eBay.

Bummer, but as they say it is what it is

Nice to know what he paid then go in and offer 5k over. At least still get a great car and he makes a few bucks.
