I appreciate the OP posting this from the Samba site. Though the seller (Samba listing) does not come out and say it, he is obviously offering this rust-free 4-cylinder chassis along with a complete set of 914-6 VIN numbers so someone could make the 4 chassis a 6 chassis. Down the road, some poor enthusiast is going to be ripped off. Buyer beware. Personally, I think that is Fraud. I have emailed the administrator for TheSamba.com and alerted him to this and requested they pull that ad.
George will probably buy it and rip someone off
Yea definitely seemed shady
Take a $1000 roller and add the cut out VIN tags of a wrecked (assuming) 914/6 and poof -$17,000. All while saving yourself the trouble of commuting fraud.
I’m all for rebuilding special cars, but c’mon, what you really have is a metal ashtray.
I received an email last night from TheSamba.com site administrator telling me he would look at the ad and make a determination. This morning the ad is still up.
If that is the standard TheSamba.com has for their Classifieds I will no longer be on their site. That ad should have been removed immediately.
Does anyone know the VIN of the /6 that they are offering with this roller? While we're at it, does anyone know the VIN of the donor car?
What a weird ad. I had to read it twice. So, you pay $17k the priviledge of buying a hulk, with visible rust, with some bits from a 6 to perform some obviously fraudulent and illegal act? 6 build and swap, paint and all that goes with that? So, 60k+ all in? Bonus, you would have to go fetch it. That's a $500 chassis to me. Maybe.
He would have been better off showing what is left of the 914-6 and asking 17K. Having no title is the big RED FLAG!
Matt
A pretty nice car showed up in Washington. The frunk was nicely covered with perlon. Upon exposing the #s stamped on the wheelwell, the numbers didn't match the rest of the car. Scrap.
There is no actual pic of a -6 in the ad at all.
Nothing escapes the keen eyesight on 914world.
someone close should try to see it in person and get the VIN
I just emailed the Samba administrator again, as the ad is still up. His email is everettb@thesamba.com. I restated my position that this ad perpetuates fraud by selling a 4-cylinder chassis along with a set of 6-cylinder chassis VIN numbers. The fact the 6 VIN numbers are not listed really makes it obvious that is what he is offering to someone. People like this need to be taken out back.
Here is the reply I received from Everettb:
I agree that could happen but we allow people to sell VIN #s, etc if they have all the paperwork/title/etc.
It's the same as someone selling a pan with title and then using it to register a Dune Buggy, which is illegal in a lot of places.
I'm going to ask for people's opinions on the site.
If he was actually selling a fake/misrepresented car then YES, I would remove it.
Everettb contradicts himself as he states "... we allow people to sell VIN #s, etc if they have all the paperwork/title"
The ad clearly states the 6's VIN's only come with a Bill of Sale, which if we're being honest is really little to no paperwork.
I absolutely agree. In this instance, it appears possible TheSamba.Com and now Everettb (as he now has knowledge of this FS ad and did not pull it) are perpetuating fraud. Of course, if some inexperienced 914-6 buyer ends up with that car and discovers the VIN swap fraud, should it happen, which is a crime, I would think TheSamba.Com and Everettb may also be on the hook for monetary damages. Foolish of TheSamba.Com to allow this ad to stand.
I've sent a request to the seller to see it in person. Its not too far from me and I will try and see if I can grab the VIN so we have it documented
I like the “CALL or TEXT” with no phone number.
A thought, says he has lien sale paperwork from the salvage yard, I wonder if it’s a branded title? If so at least it will follow title.
As for building a race tub out of it, how different is that from the 92K “-6” race car 6 that sold on BAT? That car looked to have less than a -6 front clip on a later -4 3/4 rear.
For this amount of $, any potential buyer should be able to see this as a scam.
