914World.com _ Member Vendors _ The Original Stainless Replacement Fuel Line Sets

Posted by: Racer Chris Mar 22 2006, 10:03 PM

I've been making these stainless hard tubing replacements for OE plastic fuel lines since 1998. They are an accurate repro of the factory shape for a proper fit. 9.5mm (3/8") supply and 8mm (5/16") return lines for early 914, or 8mm (5/16") supply and return for '75-6. An additional pair of short lines for the engine compartment is also available, as well as an adapter to replace the expensive rubber reducer that connects to the pump on '70-74 4 cyl. models.
Made with beaded ends for a secure hose connection or, for the racers, -6AN male ends for Aeroquip hose attachment.
Buy individually or in complete sets, available for 4 and 6 cylinder cars as well as special Subaru Conversion lines. Installation is easy using the instructions provided.
Also available: Engine shelf grommets, firewall grommets, fuel tank sock, etc.

Full details and Paypal Shopping Cart buttons are on my webpage: http://www.tangerineracing.com/stainlessFuelLines.htm

Chris,

Please put me down for two (2) fuel injected type plus shipping totaling $120.00 to Arizona. I will be sending you a cashier's check for these items. Timing is right since this spring I will be starting the rebuilding of the car. 3.0 CIS engine a couple of weeks away from being completed.

Chris,

I am not sure how to play this since I will not even pick up the car until this weekend, so I would appreciate some advice. I am in San Diego so I would like to be in the SoCal group to save on shipping.

I know nothing about 914s specifically, except that 30 year old plastic fuel lines running down the center tunnel are a Bozo-nono in my book. I am definitely interested in a SS upgrade.

The part I am unsure about is the -6AN male ends for Aeroquip hose attachments. It sounds like the correct way to go, but I am not sure what is needed on the car if I go this route. I have experience with AN fittings (such as Fragola or Earls) for SS oil cooler lines. What do you recommend to do?

In any case I am in for one $50 set for a FI. Adding the threaded fittings for $20 on both ends is fine pricewise if that is the best route.

Thanks in advance.

Posted by: Grimstead Mar 23 2006, 03:43 PM

Well from what I know right now Paul (spunone) has said we can ship the lines to his shop in Anaheim. Paul & I live close enough that we can make our handoff and I think Jim maybe close enough to Paul’s shop. As for Lou (and Hoss for that matter), I’m not sure what would be the easiest way to get them to you guys. I can keep lines here for either of you (I’d assume Paul would do the same thing) or get them into the SoCal parts pipeline for delivery (which has worked for me in the past)

Jim, Lou & Hoss, any other ideas or how does this sound to you folks?

Bill

Posted by: Hoss Mar 23 2006, 04:41 PM

Bill,

Sounds fine to me based on the locations of those who replied in this thread. I do not mind waiting and then making a trek up to Anaheim or elsewhere in Orange County. I do not want to create a hassle for someone else if it is inconvenient to hang on to them until I can make the extraction.

Thanks for the offer and effort to keep the cost down.

My opinion - don't bother with the fittings unless you already know you want to go down that road.

Fair enough then. I will take a set for fuel injection sans fittings. If I need to add the fittings down the road, I will figure it out then. Are you brazing the fittings on?

Thanks for the suggestion and insight, Chris.

Got it, thanks.

I will be sending you a check via U.S. mail tomorrow. Hopefully it will reach you in time for the cut-off date you mentioned at the start of the thread.

I am not sure where the final SoCal point of shipment will be for the batch you are sending out, so just let me know once you have the logistics/payments nailed down. Part price plus $5 for shipping is fine with me.

Many thanks again for the answers and help. I am looking forward to getting your parts and making those fuel lines bullet proof.

A cashier's check will go out this morning for two of your fuel injected stainless steel fuel lines. I previously requested these under the same thread under Shoguneagle

I am also interested in what you have done to strength the ears and related metal work around the rear suspension attachment points. I do not race, but drive spriitedly on the highway over curvy roads.

Help me out gang... I want to get this now but I'm not there yet on the car. I need to know exactly what I'll need.

I'm running a 914-6 pump in the front trunk.
I want to run Aeroquip lines (or do I?)
I'm running Weber 40IDA3C's

I think I only need the long line with the -6AN connections. What can be done on the pump end with the -6AN lines? I've seen a Burmos car with them and it looks like they're on a stock pump. confused24.gif

What about the tank fittings? Chris, I imagine you can weld the AN fittings on the tank elbows...? confused24.gif

So for this pump set up, do I have this right?

1 short delivery line through the bulkhead to the pump (-6AN from the modified tank feed to the pump)
1 long line to feed the fuel to the engine compartment (-6AN off the pump to a -6AN in the engine compartment)
1 short return line from the pump through the bulkhead to the tank return (-6AN from the pump to the modified -6AN return feed on the tank)

I think that's it but I still have the question about the -6AN lines and their termination points at the pump and the carbs. Who's BTDT??

Chris, help me price this damn thing out! laugh.gif

If you and Racergreg are combining shipping then the amount is $50 + $10 (1/2 shipping) + $2.10 (reduced Paypal fee by $0.30). If Greg already mailed the full shipping amt then reduce the Paypal fee another $0.30 and just Paypal me $51.80.

Ihappen to be very close to Chris's shop so I went over and picked them up, saves on shipping!!! I did not have the wiring harness in yet so that certainly helps. aia started with the lines rotated in the opposite direction than they need to be and once I got them to the opening before they go thru the firewall I rotated them into place. I did it alone and had to check my progress every 6 inches or so to miss the brake lines and get them on the right side of everything, so ther was a lot of crawling under the car and getting back out. Would have been easier with two but then it wouldn't have been any fun.
I was at Chris's shop on Thursday and he had many lines to ship on Friday so maybe yours is one of those. Good Luck.

Just wanted to say that Chris has done a great job with these lines. I received mine about 2 weeks ago and installed them last Monday. Chris has obviously put quite a bit of thought into the construction of lines. I was impressed when the lines fell into place and snapped into the stock plastic holder in the engine compartment. You might not think this is a big deal until you consider that Chris has compensated for the radius of his bender and for the fact that the return line has to cross over the top of the feed line. It's the well-though-out little details like this that make the difference. Very impressive.

Quality product, perfect fit, careful packaging. What else can I say? Worth every penny. Thanks, Chris.

Just installed my fuel lines, they fit perfectly. How are you guys attaching the existing 5/16 hose to the 3/8 steel line? My first thought is to get some type of brass adapter from a hardware store. Will this work?

Posted by: Racer Chris Jun 29 2006, 05:54 AM

Both lines are very close to the od of the factory plastic. A stock diameter hose should slip on with no trouble.

I found some brass 3/8" joins at Home Depot. They have tapered ends and was able to get the 5/16 over it.

Thanks

$79 is for the two piece tunnel line set including shipping. For a more nearly stock installation I recommend the added engine compartment set. I don't recommend fittings unless you are going racing. You will also need some new high pressure fuel hose, 5/16" dia. Plan on using all new rubber hoses. New fuel filter too.
The exhaust will be in the way of installing these lines so plan on dong the installation when you have that off for another reason. It's easiest of course with the engine out too. There's a clip in the tunnel near the rear, accessed through the wiring harness pathway, that holds the stock lines down.
You might need to replace the small grommets in the firewall that the lines go through. A little silicone or ptfe spray lube will help the stainless slide easily through the rubber grommets. Preferably, any hose clamps you use are of the full sleeve type to prevent cutting into the rubber.
The job can be done alone but a second pair of hands makes it go smoother. beerchug.gif
That should do it. smile.gif

Just wanted to give this a big thumbs up!!! thumb3d.gif

With the help of Clay and Travis, We installed the fuel lines I ordered a month or so ago. They were a BREEZE to install and didn't have to drop the engine at all... I did have to take out the shifter to be able to guide the lines back down the center tunnel.

EXCELLENT PRODUCT Chris! Well worth the money.

I was laying under my car the other day, wondering if it really would be possible to do without dropping the motor, did you have to remove the Exhaust?

Nope, Didn't have to remove anything but the old plastic lines. What you will need is help and a lift to get the car far enough above you that you can see what you're doing.

When we did it, it was at Clay's place so we had the car up on the hydraulic lift in his garage. Clay as at the rear of the car pushing the new solid lines trough. I was in the cockpit guiding the lines through the center tunnel and making sure they didn't get hung up on anything. To do that I needed to take out my center console, lift the carpet and take out the two plates at the front and rear of the tunnel.

Someone else (I think it was JR) was in front to to guide the ends through the rubber grommet and then push the grommet back in place.

The whole things took about 1/2 an hour and we had to do it twice. The first time around we put the lines in the wrong sides and had trouble at the front end getting them to fit into the grommet correctly.

Big plus side was that we didn't have to take ANYTHING off, and the engine stayed firmly bolted in the car! :-)

cha'ching

Now I know what I am getting myself for groundhog day

Look at one of those swamp coolers things they use on the vintage bugs for your cooling, sort of weak, but better than nothing. I have never seen an A/C setup that I liked, worked well and did not require hacking up the car for any air cooled VW product, but they have made a lot of progress on that front.

Your best choice IMO is the late style 4pc set for $129. You will also need some 5/16" high pressure fuel hose and some good hose clamps.
You can find lots of installation pictures and details on this site, various topics over the past 1 1/2 years.

Edited to update product details.

I just had a fuel line blow out after reassemblying stuff having replaced the battery tray. My question is how do I tell if I need the straight or 90 degree adapter. My 1973 2.0 L has the relocated fuel pump up front. As soon as I understand what I need, I can order the 5 line set plus the correct adapter.

Thanks, Jim

Depending on how the fuel pump relocation was done, and the particular filter used, it's possible that no adapter is needed on your car. However, we generally recommend the 90 degree adapter where one is used under the tank.

The newest item in our fuel lines product inventory is 30R9 hose.
This is the best hose, resistant to corrosive additives found in today's gasoline.
http://www.tangerineracing.com/stainlessFuelLines.htm
Since I introduced the stainless lines 6 years ago, they continue to be one of our best selling products.
You can order individually or in complete sets.
We stock replacement sets for all model years, 914-4 and 914-6, in additon to sets for engine conversions.
We have a set that includes a Carter fuel pump for carbs. and we have grommets for the firewall and engine shelf, as well as new fuel tank sock filters.

Posted by: Racer Chris Sep 10 2011, 09:32 AM

I've added some package deals which include 30R9 hose and clamps.
Replacement injector elbows are also available here.

In order to ship fuel lines to Australia at a more reasonable price I'm resorting to bending the lines a bit more than normal to fit them in a shorter box.
The USPS won't take anything longer than 42 inches, and FedEx, etc. want more than $300 for a box weighing only a few pounds.
One freight forwarding company I've used is below $200 but that's still exorbitant IMO.

So here's what I came up with:
Attached Image

It shouldn't be too hard to straighten the u-bend between the two green tape wraps.

Posted by: Mblizzard Jan 8 2014, 06:34 PM

I just installed these in my 1975. I have put a lot of time and money into my car as many of us have. I was horrified to find out when I removed my old lines that at some point that the original lines had been "repaired" by the insertion of rubber hose in the tunnel section. While that might an acceptable repair to some, it scared the crap out of me to know that I had gas lines that could break at any moment and numerous electrical connections all in such close proximity.

If you have not checked the condition of your tunnel lines I would suggest you do so. If you have any concerns at all I would recommend Chris's lines. George (the Painted man) suggested I check mine and I am so glad I did. The install is a bit of a bear as you have to remove the gas tank but the instructions from Chris are great. The only suggestion I can add is during the threading of the lines through the tunnel it is helpful to place a bright light in the tunnel near the pedal cluster and look through the hole that the shift linkage runs through when inserting the lines. This little trick helps a bunch!

Thanks Chris for such a quality product that represents a true increase in safety when installed.

Go to http://www.tangerineracing.com/stainlessfuellines.htm for a complete listing of our fuel system products.
Paypal is our preferred method of payment, however we will take credit card orders by phone.

Our SS Lines can be purchased individually or in sets made up specifically for your application.
The fuel injection hose we sell is Gates Barricade, which meets or exceeds 30R9 specifications. The fit is snug, no need to use a smaller size and stretch it over the fitting.

We have packages including all the hose, clamps, grommets needed to complete the installation.
We sell a 8mm FI hose and clamp set for the top of the engine, and fuel injector elbow sets with hose clamps.
We have low pressure and high pressure rotary fuel pumps.
We also have related items such as a brass tee for dual carbs.
