914World.com _ Member Vendors _ Replica 914-6 GT Double Grilled Engine Lid

Posted by: PCA7GGR Oct 12 2003, 01:07 PM

FS: 914-6 GT Double Engine Grill
Replica of the original double grilled 914-6GT engine lid. It is made with original grill material. The cross brace can be lighten or removed (your choice - the lid is a bit more structurally rigid if the cross brace is only lightened - with the cross brace removed, the lid is lighter but the lid tends to flex and may not fit flush against the trunk when closed). The latch and torsion bars are left intact. The lids are painted semi-gloss black (similar to satin black).

The lid is $500 with a core lid (or $550 without a core) plus shipping/packing - cash, cashiers check or Paypal (add 3% for Paypal) from you. Your core lid(s)/grill(s) needs to be in very nice condition (lid has minimal coats of paint, no dents, nor rust and the mesh on grill has no holes nor deformities). If you are providing a stock lid(s)/grill(s), you are responsible for their packing/shipping to me. You can use the box that I send your GT lid in and, upon receipt and if in usable condition, I will refund $50.

More pics and info available upon request, Thanks

Any other pictures? what kind of grill material?

Posted by: Rob Ways Jan 3 2004, 10:34 AM

I'm fairly sure its two stock lids welded together.

Posted by: PCA7GGR Feb 5 2004, 09:44 AM

Rob is correct, I do use two stock grills. But they are not welded together, They are attached in a similar fashion as the original with speed nuts and the addition of pop rivets.

Here is a close up picture of a section of the lid:

do you also have an extended rain guard thingie like the stock decklid has, or do we have to somehow fabricate our own?

Posted by: Mueller Sep 20 2004, 07:21 PM

no rain guard !!!!

the purpose of this lid is to improve cooling (which it does)

nice quality work if I may add, I don't have one, but I picked one up for a customer and was pleased with the lid.

Posted by: PCA7GGR Oct 9 2004, 07:27 AM

Mike, thanks for the kudos. The grills are still available.

agree.gif I also bought one of Sergio's 914-6 GT style grills. I have it on my 6 and it is a nice piece of work; well pleased with it. I wouldn't hesitate to suggest it to others for several reasons, most important being cooling (of course), but it also looks great. Indeed, kudos to Sergio!

Sergio,
Are your GT engine grills still available? What is the cost? Is the cost for one outright or do we need to supply a core grill? What forms of payment do you accept?
Thanks
Mark

CCLINPD,

Currently, I have plenty of grills and lids. But, I am open to offers that would involve one or several of my GT lids.

Gentlemen, I would love to share a pic of my pride and joy,but as I keep spending money on her I've yet to join the digital age. I'll have to borrow a dig camera or buy a scanner. Sergio, I'll try not too wait that long to procure one. Nathan- Nice collection. I also have a Audi A6 Avant and a 92 VW GTI.

When you install the GT grill, do you change the two side solid pieces at either end of the front part--the sides ? Maybe a picture of how it turns out would help

Posted by: PCA7GGR Jan 6 2006, 10:04 PM

Jim,

You just change the lid. It is held on at the front by two 10mm bolts.

Posted by: jim_hoyland Jan 7 2006, 08:44 AM

I am asking about the pieces to the right and left of the grill up against the glass and alonside the pillar . I'll take a picture later.

Yes a nice piece. The factory 916 double grille is actually cruder! The german chicken wire really looks cheap and it is installed with screws!

Posted by: PCA7GGR Apr 27 2007, 10:19 AM

George,

I agree, the factory ones were inddeed an odd assortment that were made with what they had on had at the time. A few years back when Porsche was the featured marque at the Monterey Historics, there were six factory GTs - each lid was different and some indeed were a bit rough.

Are they still available? I have 2 'cores' that I am willing to send to you to help the effort. I am looking for one without the braces. i am not going to use a drip pan. I just want as much air and see-through as possible and yet still be strong as the original, if that is possible. So, knowing all of that, how much (hopefully with cores) would that be?

Thanks!

Sergio,

I recently bought a 914 with one of your engine lids installed and must say it is very nice indeed. The prior owner did not utilize the stock hood springs and they are no where to be seen.

Do you recommend any other means of opening the hood that does not require trying to squeeze your fingers in the gap between the hood and the trunk? Have you ever seen a gas hood strut installed like camp 914 does on the front and rear lids?

Thanks

Looking at the pics above, are there two rectangular areas not covered by screen, on both ends of the foward most grill - next to the window, or do those areas just look not screened? If so what about infiltration of leaves and debris?

Posted by: JmuRiz Nov 2 2011, 06:45 PM

Those are the body-colored parts that are wider than the engine lid. No chance of debris getting through.

beerchug.gif I know, that's what shocked me. I've been a member for a while, (Club then more so World) and recall when you started offering these, and didn't think you would have that many sold. After reading how ALL of your customers love the quality, I see why.

This is NOT just and sawzall and bolt together.

4 so far this year - I can make one for your teen too.

Posted by: forrestkhaag Aug 14 2016, 02:58 PM

May i suggest to the lid builders out there to slot the two holes in the lid's mounting brackets / cut with a high speed wheel or hack saw if properly secured. This makes taking off, removing and or re-fitment a breeze / no fumbling around upside down with wrench, washers, bolts dropping down the oil tower or into your open and unstuffed carb intakes....... mad.gif

This simple little alteration makes a one-man task out of the lid refit and becomes so simple that i usually take the lid off for tuning, cleaning, etc. My GT lid makes it only easier to see where to poke the slot into the bolt already installed on the hinge receiver.

beerchug.gif

Posted by: PCA7GGR Aug 14 2016, 03:07 PM

I have cut the slots on the mounting brackets For the the buyers that had requested me to do so. But in most applications the lid is mounted and seldom removed.

Maybe I misread the intent. It was probably just a typo. Lighted instead of lightened I thought you might have integrated a third brake light into the grille work. Wishful thinking.

Looking forward to installing on the black car.

Running really low on donor grills. So......

If you've been thinking about getting one of my GT lids, do it soon. The grills are getting harder to source and shipping is getting prohibitive.

Thanks

PM sent.

Just acquired 10 more engine lid grills so I can make 5 more GT lids.

The grills are going scarce, so if you want one of my GT lids, now the time to contact me. Not sure how many got I can make. Thanks

Posted by: PCA7GGR Jan 5 2023, 08:30 AM

Happy New Year all. Down to just a few more GT lids before I run out of both grills and frames. Once those are gone, if you want one made, you'll have to ship me your stock engine lid and a 2nd grill.

Thanks and stay safe.

@http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=1219 A few potential leads? You might have to start raising your prices.

Thanks for the heads up. I've contacted the local one.

Unfortunately, shipping a complete lid is running between $35-$50. So I'm usually just hunting for the grills if shipping is involved.

Imay indeed have to raise prices if I have to pay the price some seller are asking. Especially since Im probably the only person who buys engine lids.

I've often said that you could roll a 914 off a cliff and the only part that won't be damaged would be the engine lid - the most protected part of the car - ;>)

Posted by: PCA7GGR Apr 15 2023, 09:22 PM

Down to one prepped frame and a single grill.

So….. if you want what could be my last GT lid, you’ll need to provide a grill.

Thanks for a great run: 217 GT lids over 23 yrs. Thanks

Posted by: PCA7GGR Apr 20 2023, 11:53 AM

#218 made & shipped.

No more lids nor grills. So you’ll need to to provide a complete lid and 2nd grill.

Thanks for your support.
