914World.com _ Originality and History _ 914/6 engine serial numbers

Posted by: laflaur Sep 29 2010, 07:55 PM

Hi all,
A post on the bird board got me thinking about compiling a list of "out of car"
factory engines and that we might be able to help some of these engines find their way back to the original chassis.
So,here is the place to post those 640/641 engine serial numbers out floating around. I think serial number and last whereabout should be good.If you have an engine for sale, post in the f/s section and I will copy it to the list or you can add it.
Thanks,
John

P.s.Thanks to Pat G. for the sticky

Thanks George, that is setting the bar pretty high, but I think with all the great folks in this community we can make a pretty comprehensive list.

OK, I will add this to your list, I just purchased engine case 6414103 and will keep it unless/until I find my original engine, 6414135[attachmentid=237595].

It is a very clean case and I feel fortunate to have bought it for a fair price from Henry Schmidt at Supertec Performance in Fallbrook, CA. At least I now have a period correct case that is only 32 numbers off of my original case. Probably doesn't mean anything to anyone but me. piratenanner.gif

bump for new serial numbers and a reunited engine.

Posted by: mskala Jan 17 2011, 08:25 PM

I have 6404278 which is now mostly in my car, and
6404140 which I believe is original to my car.

My engine in my 6r has been long gone. dry.gif My COA says the number was 6400373.
Any one know where that engine is??????????

All,

I am new to the 914 World forum. I am a long time 914-6 enthusiast! I own 914-6 chassis #9140432353. It is missing its original engine and gearbox. The original motor number was 6405532. Porsche doesn't have the original gearbox number recorded. I would be interested in finding the original motor. Any help or leads would be appreciated! On the gearbox, if anyone would know around what gearbox number I should be looking for it would also be appreciated.

Thank You!

Freeman,

I own 9140432347 with engine #6400818 and gearbox #7502325, both original to the car. It's a euro spec six which explains the engine number, but the gearboxes, to my knowledge, were all the same. Looking for engine 6405225. Believed to have swapped engines with a yellow 914/6 by a mechanic named Rich Camacho who had a shop in the in SF Bay area. I have the original engine to that car which is 6404377.

I was poking around in the barn and checked the numbers on an engine that I bought in the late 1970s to use to convert out first 914-4 to a six which I never did. I was told at the time that it came out of a 911t and it had 911 heater boxes an tin on it. The engine has been sitting under the workbench since. It is a 901/36, serial number 6405282 and located in Vermont.

Member DaveP could accuratley speculate, but a PORSCHE COA is a good place to start. Mine was accurate on the engine number for my 914/6. Some will say they are inaccurate. Mine was correct.

Another engine finds it's way home! Thanks to 914world, we found the engine for Jack's 914-6. Don't give up hope if you are still looking for yours.

Also, I still have engine #5730 available for it's original chassis.

Jacks car is #2624 and the engine is #5738, so I can say with relative certainty that the chassis for engine #5730 is probably in the 2600-2620 range.

According to my notes, engine #4171 is in car #0287.
4171 - 4160 = 11
0287 - 0275 = 12

So, I'd say 160 is pretty certain to be correct!

The largest reportedly matching numbers deviation I've seen is:
chassis 1029 with engine 4397 (early-ish COA photo)
compare with
chassis 938 with engine 4553 (armando's totaled six)

Chassis VIN went up 100, but engine serial went down 150.
I imagine they had some engines that didn't make the cut, and the cases went back into the shop to be reworked only to reappear later and be mated with a much later chassis. It seems there were a few in the 1000-1200 range that got lower engines.

The above chart is only USA 901/38 engines.
Remember that the euro chassis VINs are in sequence with the US, but the engines have their own range, so as batches of euro destination cars came of the line, the USA engine serials would stop incrementing.
I've done my best to only include kardex or COA documented VINs but that doesn't mean that these are 100% accurate.

Transmissions on the other hand track pretty nearly with the chassis, with recorded deviation from the VIN by 20-30 serial numbers, or as few as 2 like both of the 6's I've owned having (1902 with trans 1904, and 2624 with trans 2626.)

Welcome. You are bidding on a 1972 Porsche 914-6 engine. This is the real deal and is one of the last 914-6 engines built. It still turns over and is complete with heads, Marelli distributor, Black plastic fan shroud, etc. The heads are dated 1972. This would be a great chance to return a 914-6 engine to your car, save as a spare, or built to your needs. I am happy to answer any questions you may have. Buyers are to responsible for shipping. I have put 5 dollars for shipping charges just to cover the cost of the pallet, shrink wrap and straps. Please email me for a shipping quote.

I was wondering if anyone has compiled a list of known VIN / Engine Numbers that are correct. One that you can really read,
meaning the numbers don't run over each other.
Might help someone looking to buy a 6 to know if the engine in the car is at least in the range of what it should be..
Not exact by any means, but might help rule out numbers that are way out of sequence ?
You can't always wait for a COA to confirm before buying, so this might
be of some help ??

Um... see my post on Aug 5th above:)
This is exactly what I've done.
Unfortunately, it does not really help verify that an engine is matching numbers. There are COA confirmed matching numbers that vary by more than 100 numbers from the projected line based on the data. So all you can really tell is that you MIGHT have the correct engine.

There are chassis with much "earlier" engines, which would imply that some engines were reworked after getting a serial number.

There are also chassis with much "later" engines which would imply that some chassis had problems and had to be reworked before being assigned and engine.

My own car is a great example:
VIN 9140431902
Engine 6405287
Trans 7501904

The line would project that I should have an engine number around 5200, with chassis both before and after mine with confirmed data points landing right on the projected line. Then the car only two after mine 1904 has an even higher engine number by 50 more. So that's a deviation of 130+.

So, all the chart can do is give you a rough idea of where your engine should land. If you have an engine that is over 500 away from the line, it's probably wrong, but you can't be sure until you get the COA.

cheers,
dug

Hey Dug- yep, have no idea where #5211 is or if it still exists. Bought my six w/ a 2.7 already in it. It's been highly modified over the years & I like it a lot. I'd love to have my original engine on the side as you do but it appears that it's not to be. I'm afraid if I ever found my original engine I'd have to seriously consider putting the car back to the way it came from the factory. I was cleaning up the motor out of 914043275 yesterday the case is marked 6404160 901/38 but the heads all have date stamps of either 11/71 or 12/71 and the casting # (I think that is what it's called?) on all six is K1819n. What do I have exactly? Did they just use later heads during a rebuild, or does it mean it is a 2.2 or 2.4? Or can I even tell from this info?

You're missing an 0 in that VIN #9140430275:)
As you can see from the chart Luke posted, those are 73T CIS heads. The intake ports are smaller, but both the intake and exhaust valves are bigger than the original heads. Depending on if they ported them or not, they could breath better than the originals. Also, they would usually be used with an 84mm or larger cylinder, so you may have 2.2L (or even 2.4L if the crank was also upgraded) built on the original engine.

Hi Dug
I created the confusion.
I was suggesting that the first three digits might be 077 and the last is ?
Larry Lee also has 2128 with 0771
....but also.....2131 with 0773 !
Maybe the new owner of 2130 will get a COA and solve the mystery.
By the way, 2130 has trans 2114 ....seems right.
Is numerical sequence interrupted by Euro/US engine type ?
The car did have Euro rear lenses.

it would be nice to know what the actual selling prices of these engines are. asking price and a 'sold' don't tell you much.

Don that guy said he got close to the selling price so your guess is as good as mine.

http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=247718

It did have some good bits on it, but I thought as a core it was overpriced. I understand the want for the correct numbers matching engine, but if it was my /6 all that low power lump would do is take up space on a skid in the corner.
It would have to be the absolutely correct numbers engine to warrant that space.

I trust it to be real.. So I won't waste the money on a COA.

6400748 is probably between chassis 1900 and 2100.
The factory won't release information about a chassis except to the owner, so it will be difficult. Your best bet is to post it here, which you just did:)

I've had a 914-6 engine, serial number 6404249 for about a dozen years. It's time to do something with this engine and ideally I’d like to put the engine and original car back together. Is there a 914-6 registry or some other way to determine if the original chassis still exists for this engine and the current owner’s contact information?

Thanks,

Hi Towarish,
Thanks for posting the link.

There isn't a list of 914-6 engine numbers, and you cannot ask Porsche to reverse look up the chassis for an engine, they only will tell you the engine number for your car via the COA.

I can tell you that with a low number like that it will be very close to the engine, but not exact still because of the different sequence for euro and US engine serials.
I have engine 4026 is in #36 and 4028 is in #48. So it's probably from chassis 37 to 47.

cheers,

For those selling 914-6 engine cases and those thinking about acquiring the original engine case for their car. Here is my opinion on values:

I've been tracking 914-6 sale prices for the last 10 years. During the big bump over the last 2 years, the average sale (actual sales not just asking) price of a numbers matching car vs a non-numbers matching car is a $20k difference. However, it is not just the engine that makes this price gap. Most of the cars with a numbers matching engine are also more original, better cared for examples.

I have run across a few 914-6 engines that are being offered for 5 figure prices. Others have been purchased and then immediately offered for 2 or 3x the price, even as a bare case. Some have been sitting in the back of a shop for 30 years, in "as removed" condition.

A complete engine that was removed in the 80s for an upgrade and has just been sitting indoors may have an engine case in better condition than one that has been apart or stored in a less weatherproof environment, but if it is not currently running with compression and leakdown numbers, it's just as much of a mystery internally. It's highly likely that the car had 100k miles on it in during it's first 10 years on the road, and most if not all of the parts in that engine are worn out, which is why the swap was done in the first place instead of a rebuild.

As an example of what it will take to get the case back to operational condition, I sent my own numbers matching 914-6 engine to Ollie's last month. The engine case looked in fine condition with no visible damage or modifications. I didn't order any extra special racing mods, just the standard upgrades that any engine rebuild should consider like oil bypass mod, piston squirters and stud inserts. But because most if not all magnesium cases warp with heat and age, Ollie's says almost all mag cases and even most Aluminum cases they get these days require align boring.

So the complete list was:
Inspect
Align bore
Spot face through bolt holes
Head stud inserts
Weld at #3
Media Tumble
R&R oil plugs
Hot Tank
Oil Bypass Mod
Install Piston oil squirters

The total was $2462, just to prep the case.

The rest of the rebuild costs will depend on what your tastes and goals are, but the minimum is $10k if you don't want to do it again.

So, no your old dirty rusty corroding pile of 69 911T parts is not worth $10k. I sold a case to a user here to re-unite with it's chassis for $1500. The rest of the original parts are effectively worthless. T cranks are $300 even if they are std/std. 69T heads, no one wants them. 2.0 rods are $100 a set. T cams worthless. Cam housings and chain boxes also valueless, I have 5 extra sets and so does everyone else. Early 11 blade fans are worth $300, if they aren't chipped with rusty pulleys. Worn out Zeniths are $500. So maybe that old pile of parts you have there is worth $2500.

So what is a numbers matching engine worth? If it's a running driving engine in the car with induction, it has an ~$10-15k bump to the value of the car. Which makes it worth buying a $1500-2500 engine case and spending the $15k to rebuild it and get it in the car. But I would not recommend that anyone spend $10k+ for a core engine or just an engine case in unknown condition.

Remember when negotiating, as the person with the matching chassis you are the ONLY person in the world that values that engine case. No one else can do anything with it that makes sense. And as the person with the engine case, remember that the 914-6 owner has to do a lot of expensive work to do to even make it usable. So quit trying to cash in on the $10k price differential when you got that old dirty thing in your shed for a few hundred bucks at a swap meet way back when.

cheers,
dug

Posted by: gandalf_025 Aug 29 2016, 01:14 PM

Sorry, But I'd think
If you can actually find your matching number case,...... BUY IT.. It will never be worth less to the owner of the car...
Not to say you don't negotiate the price if you can...

Seriously... What it adds to the value today may be one thing, but in the future can't be determined. Who ever thought these cars would be worth what they are in today's market ??

My original engine is sitting on a shelf in my garage..36,000 miles and never been apart.. What does that add to the value of my car ????
It will never go back into the car in my lifetime... Not worth the risk of damaging it..

just saying...

Can someone give me relatively educated information on value of non-numbered case engine ( I know condition matters) but I want it as it relates to value of a restored car.
That is, if the price of a nicely restored six = 10 on a scale of 1 to 10, what is the price of a non numbers matching and then a non numbered case.
Thanks in advance for feedback.

I have tried to quantify this but I see non-numbers matching cars fetching as much as numbers matching cars. Just to throw a number out there I would say $5k-$10k more with matching engine and trans that is why people charge $1500+ for otherwise useless 914/6 cases. I say useless because it cost as much to rebuild a 2.7L as it does a 2.0L and who would opt for less power.

#6404497 in NY on the bird board

Posted by: Kansas 914 Dec 2 2017, 09:44 AM

I just saw this on Facebook in the Porsche 914 Owner's Club (no affiliation):

I just purchased a collection of cars here in California. One item the collection included was what I thought was a 911 engine. After some research I discovered it is a 914/6 motor. It is a 908/38 case with the number 6404542. It looks like it was rebuilt as a 2.7L (1976 heads) and then put in storage.
I'd love to reconnect it with its original car.

Hello.
I'm looking for 6410148 last heard of at Sonauto(Paris) when they fitted it into another car.
I've currently got 6400453 taken from a French car by Sonauto.

I could also do with finding my transmission 510169 removed in France and I now think its in the USA.

Posted by: SON914/6 Jan 7 2018, 03:05 PM

I just noticed the chassis no of Sonauto's "Tour de France" car. 914.043.0457 Could my current engine be from this? The last four numbers are very close.

Because the engine numbers are split between US and RoW, the chassis and engine diverged very quickly. 6400453 would be in VIN #1000ish.

Please tell me your VIN so that I may associate it with your missing engine #6410148.

In case anyone is looking for 6404238, I saw it a few weeks ago.
It is an incomplete engine... Case, crank pistons and rods..
I don't own it and the guy who does probably thinks it is worth
a bunch....
Realistically only worth something to the owner of the matching car...

Anyone have any info on recent sale/purchase of one of the 901/38 engines, with prices, not asking, but actual price paid. Not for the correct car/engine match scenario, just an engine without a home. I ALWAYS hear how worthless these engines are, without the correct chassis number buyer, but I think someone forgot to tell the folks selling them...reason is I have a mostly complete 1971 901/38 I am considering selling to get my "now found" engine, which I assure you the guy wants me to PAY!
My engine is very complete, never been apart since assembly, and I am VERY sure the car has long ago been returned to Mother Earth supposedly in Alaska at one point. The Engine S/N is on the 1971 year model list in the first post.

Actual engine for my car is now only case, crank, pistons and cylinders. Rest removed and used as required somewhere else...

are they exact....off by a few numbers up or down ....
or random?
I know the engine from my car was sold 30 years ago(before I owned it).
I have a short stroke 2.5 in the car at present ...just curious

Is there a more certain way of finding a powerplant original to car I own 70 914/6 1255 I have posted a long block for sale 6405275 but am looking for the original

Posted by: davep Oct 12 2019, 08:53 AM

To find the original engine to a car you must first know what it is either through documentation that came with the car (such as the original Maintenance Record book with both the VIN and engine # written at the time of purchase) or through obtaining the engine # from factory sources such as the COA. Since Porsche has cracked down on information release in the past year or so it has become nearly impossible to learn the serial of an unknown engine. I have been able to obtain the engine # through a source I have developed, but the cost is quite significant; contact me for details.

Guestimating the range within which your engine may be found is difficult. I do not believe it is possible to go through the entire production process and have the VIN assigned as the car comes off of the assembly line and thus have the cars emerge in VIN sequence. For the 914/6 the fully trimmed bodies arrived from Karmann to have the drive train installed. Production logistics dictates that pools (four engine types and two transmission types) of engines and transmissions be in the assembly area to pick from. The assembler would choose an engine and transmission at random from the appropriate pool to install in the car. Replenishment of the pools would be done as required, but I doubt that the pools would be empty very often. As is common in such cases it happens that the last in can be the first out. So in a small range of cars, say 20, the engine & transmission serials can be quite random. In the case of my 74 Limited Edition, the engine should have been installed in October, but was actually installed in February; this is a pretty extreme example though.

I have been collecting data for many decades and can make some educated guesses as to a potential range, but knowing exactly is not possible. I do welcome new data points from everyone (VIN, engine & transmission #'s, plus paint code and chassis production #) to help build the database and make it easier to narrow the ranges.

Any insight on what this was from?

6401662 is far too high for type 901/36 914/6 Euro engine. Is there an engine type present? What are the case cast in #'s on both sides below the oil return tubes; 101.xR & 102.yR? The revisions # may decide the year. I'm guessing it is an interesting typo.

It would have come from something near 9140432350 +/-20 most likely. Since you have had it so long, I assume the original car was wrecked. There certainly seems to be more engines around than cars. sad.gif

Found a longblock for sale, but I'm unsure where its from. The first 3 digits indicate 914/6, but the last 4 are baffling to me. It doesn't seem to match up with 914/6 numbers. doesn't look like its from a 1970 911 either?

Any insight on what this was from?

Thanks in advance!

I have #6400681 in my GT Tribute. Would consider parting with it if it was going back into its original chassis but I suspect that car was wrecked and lost long ago as this car was built using factory 914-6 parts from a couple of cars.

I can't believe the interest in 914-6's FOR YOUR INTREST I have had ser# 1937 with eng # 5237 on the COA. I've had the car since 1992 and it is just new being restored .

Posted by: StarBear Jul 27 2022, 06:32 PM

It looks like the id match hunt goes only one way - have to have vin number, get PNA COA (now PP) to get the engine # that goes with the vin. Anti-fraud tactic, as vins more easy to fake?? confused24.gif

Posted by: rgalla9146 Jul 28 2022, 09:08 AM

The COA will not PROVIDE original component numbers.
You provide the check and the VIN and the component numbers of the parts you
have.
The COA will only confirm a matching number if it is in their records.
Transmission numbers are rarely in production records of our cars but can be known
'approximately' if compared to VIN, Karmann chassis number and engine number.
They usually get color code and interior color right and sometimes options too.
The description of options can cause confusion.
Prepare to be dissapointed......... given the cost.
914s were not a priority model.

Bernard, type 901/36 is a European version of the 914/6 engine and matches the serial 64006xx. I cannot tell you more than that without the full serial #. Do you have just the engine crankcase? It does not have significant value as a crankcase except to the owner of the car it was originally installed in. The original car can be determined at a cost.

So,here is the place to post those 640/641 engine serial numbers out floating around. I think serial number and last whereabout should be good.If you have an engine for sale, post in the f/s section and I will copy it to the list or you can add it.
