914World.com _ Originality and History _ Replacement speakers - size and source?

Posted by: geshaghi Jul 25 2014, 08:39 PM

Does anyone have a source for replacement speakers for the 914, or a measurement of the size of the OE units? My car had some mdf adapter plates made with small round speakers installed. I've searched and found photos, but no info on OE replacement or size. Thanks

You can kind of get a 4x6 speaker mounted in there. Back space is tight so most hi performance speakers wont fit. A small 4x6 plate speakers will fit, but not much bass from those since the drivers are really 3.5". I have been looking for a used 4" 2 way component set from Focal that uses a neodymium magnet for both drivers ($500+ new, but no longer made). This provides the mounting depth needed to fit. Adapter plates will still need to be made. I did find a raw driver that could work from Parts Express. You will need to source tweeter and crossover solution to complete.

914 rubber sells speaker pods that will accept up to 6.5" round speakers.

Can't say that they still sell them, but Crutchfield sold perfect fits (though not hi-tech) for the factory grills. May still provide them (I got mine there in'72). Really, this is an ancient sports car. Do you really need a hi-tech stereo system? Would you use it in an open top, noisy car? Get basic & save money. Then, enjoy the motor sound.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm not really looking for high-end audio, as I will be putting an old Blaupunkt back in the car, but the existing speakers are completely shot, so I do need something new. I'll see what I can turn up in 4" round and use the existing adapter plates, or some 4 x 6 units that might fit.

George,

Aftermarket speaker housing allows larger round speakers. I see them for sale now and again.

Speakers are an odd size. Some 4x6 will work and others won't. It is kind of hit and miss. Crutchfield shows 5x7 but they will not work.

Just picking up on this old thread, has anyone successfully installed speakers with the hot air ducting installed behind? I’ve got some shallow speakers from Germany and they still don’t fit (hits the ducting).

I have an NOS set of Polk 4x6's and an NOS Alpine CD/AM/FM for sale in the classifieds, $75 for the speakers and head unit. New in the box. I got them for my 914-6, and never got around to installing, then I sold the 6
