914World.com _ Originality and History _ '76 Steel Rim color.

Just acquired an OEM steel wheel for my spare. What color was the spare tire steel rim on 76 914? This wheel looks like a faded silver. TIA

assume you got a correct for 76 star steelie spare.

satin black back side.
silver facing out.

i swear silver is identical to ford "argent silver" when i have parked my car alongside an aussie ford falcon with steel wheels. i run original star steelies. 1974.

others can correct me about silver if i am wrong.
the silver would have been whatever VW actually used back then for all VWs.
i would not be the least bit surprised if it was the same as ford.

EDIT
since i have never painted mine and don't really know, smile.gif
i did a google.
914s would have exactly the same paint.

VW grey aluminium, L97U, RAL 9007.
VW nerds in link would know.

go to a paint shop and give them the RAL reference #.
proper paint people can get you the right color with that reference.
(its a satin finish).

be fascinated to do a RAL reference on ford now.
as they sure look the same side by side.
but then again my rims are 50 years old and the paint is sure to have altered over time.

Wow, thank you so much. And yes it is the 75-76 steel spare. That info is very helpful and appreciated. You guys are getting some serious rains down there. Australia and Texas have similar conditions. Droughts or floods. No happy medium. beerchug.gif

up north mate, in brisbane.
not down here.

but yes, there are some scary similarities between aus and texas.
i went out with a texan girl when i was in chicago.
whenever she took me down with her to see her mother in houston i was cured of homesickness. right down to seeing houston electronic music punks walking around in the blazing sun dressed from head to toe in black. beerchug.gif

Wurth silver is another paint for this that is known to be a match.
