914World.com _ Originality and History _ Real 914S

Posted by: Vietnam6871 Jun 16 2023, 02:02 PM

I got lucky and found this in a dealership in Florida that didn't know what thay had. I have an original brochure that shows my car exactly including the "S" being separately mounted with different holes than the "2.0" insignia. I have seen copies of the S but they are fake. The "S" is attached to the "914' and that never existed. There are no signs of holes for the mounting of "2.0' , only the existng holes that hold the 'S" in place. So,I have a totally rust free Sunflower Yellow "S". The trans has been completely rebuilt (smoother than the original rebuilt in my early 65 911) and the stroker original block is going back in at about 2.3 liters and 145hp. At the end of this month, I will be driving a "real" 914S. Attached Image Attached ImageAttached ImageAttached Image

This one I need to have full data on with lots of photos. Assuming that it is the real thing, it has got to be rare.

Is your emblem black plastic? I had one of those and sent it to 914Rubber. Mark decided not to use it for a pattern because it was not the correct size. Automotion sold them back in the 80's-90's.

The S is black and the same material as the black 914. See my picture of the rear end.

Check the 4 pictues I attached to my original post. I will take more pics when I can but right now my wife is ill and she comes first. The 914 was very early production, 8/72.

interesting.

my view on things like this is never say never.

a while back i came across this in the comments of a BAT auction.
and filed it away.

there are two 73 2.0 L cars that are down here that have been here since 73.
came from the UK new.
both have euro badging and have the 2.0 badge despite UK dealers calling it an SC.
but both those cars are much later in the 73 production run.

got curious. oh O.

pulled down the library i had in a box.
looked through this. one of the old brooklands collection books of contemporary motoring magazine reprints.
some of you probably have it.
had these for 40 years.

reprint of popular imported cars article 1973. pg54
new 2.0 914.
test car = early car from first batch of a 1000 or so with vinyl screen pillars.
(not the factory publlcity shot but other photo with door open, hard to tell for sure,
but looks like sheen reflection off black pillar, but it is a fuzzy old repro).

no 2.0 badge. just 914.
guy who left his anecdote on BAT had a good memory!
dunno if this was common knowledge with you history buffs.

but......not an S badge there. just blank. smile.gif beer.gif

on my way out of the rabbit hole.

73 survivor 1.7
a member here cleaned it up and sold it on BAT.
new owner a member here now.
very very early car.
probably from day 2 of 73 production.

has a curious detail.
mismatched finish on badge at rear.
wouldn't want to read too much into it.
but you could think it was just someone replacing a badge along the way.
however was a very original intact car in most respects.
a possibility might have been no 1.7 badge on very early cars either?
and later dealer has installed 1.7 or installed after production line before sale.

an early 73 2.0 is for sale on BAT.

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1973-porsche-914-71/

could be one of the early production that lacked a 2.0 badge.

The S is real. Porsche visionaries created it in anticipation of the inevitable Subaru conversions on the horizon. stirthepot.gif
