So I have contacted Porsche about the odd number of cars they claim were produced for the 1976 model year (14100) and got an email response today. The guy sent me a little spreadsheet that lists the production numbers they use when putting together COAs. None of these numbers jive with the few resources I have seen, with the worst offender being the 1976 model year:

1970 13312
1971 16231
1972 21580
1973 27660
1974 21379
1975 11369
1976 14100

Question to the experts: What production numbers do you know about and what is the source for them? With a little luck and given good sources I may even get them to reconsider their figures.

After a bit of back and forth with the guy at the department handling the COAs he did realize the 1976 model year is off and he's sending a new one

The other years' number are actually taken straight from the range of VIN numbers assigned that year. Not sure why, but the numbers Andy put together on this page...

That link is to Andy's calendar year production, not the model year production which is here:

Even so, the numbers for 1974, 1975, and 1976 are not the same. We know 1976 should be 4100. I have seen different numbers before also.

The one I have from 1989 contains VIN number ranges, but no tables to list numbers by calendar year. Do you have a new and improved version?

2nd edition from 1991. not sure if there were any significant changes.

the table with the productionnumbers by calendar year is on page 152 ...

Dang, I kept looking in the "Daten und Fakten" section, where I assumed it would be...

I'm curious how he split up the chassis number ranges by calendar year. Maybe there were calendar year stats kept somewhere, even though calendar years don't mean anything in the automobile industry.

when i was in contact with karman about the 914 prototypes (back in the day when i still thought i was going to be part of the restoration team for 914114) all their data was broken down by calendar year.

there was even some talk about '68 shells ...
