Andy and I were looking inside his gas tank today. Seeking RUST! What we saw was something that looked very distinctly like primer. I'm now thinking that the tanks were dipped in a vat of primer before being painted. The idea that stock tanks were bare metal inside may be false! ohmy.gif

I think they have a zinc phosphate coating.

That's my understanding also. Not something painted, but eloctrostacally applied. Sort of like the forerunner to galvanizing.

You betcha! Not sure if it sticks as well as the galvanized version of later years, but should be good so long as "good" fuel was kept in it.
