914World.com _ Originality and History _ COA - is there a way to tell what radio your car came with?

Posted by: tod914 Aug 21 2008, 01:23 PM

I was looking through the COA threads, not one showed a factory radio. Is
there a way to know what radio your car with? I know most where dealer
installed, but just curious if any one has one on there COA if it was a factory
install.

There are a few Factory radio options, but few were installed at the factory.

Some early USA COAs showed radios, but all I have examples of are for 914.6 cars, here are a couple. USA delivery 914s were never factory equipped with radios as far as I can tell. German price lists indicated radio options with option codes, see my webpage under 'Optional Equipment' for various M-codes for different radios. smile.gif

Aside from one 914/6, tha has long ago gone to the boneyard, I've never seen a 914 with a factory istalled radio. Doesn't mean that it didn't happen - I just haven't seen any others.

I got my Blaupunkt Frankfort from Crutchfield in late '72 - easy install. I was stretched to my financial limit when I bought my 914 in August '72 for $4295 with app grp. There were NO discounts. So, I had to wait until I had the cash for a radio. Hell, as a chemist, I made $10K/year.

Times do change!

Radios, along with floor mats, were a concession to dealers allowing them boost add on sales. The only 914 4s I have seen with factory radios were on cars specially ordered that way from the factory. As the lead time for a special order was quite lengthy, few people actually did this (my recollection, I do not have specific numbers).

Motorola made the dealer installed radios. FM was an option at an additional charge.

From what we have been able to document, the "oral history" that we have from long-term owners, and my own first-hand experience as both a salesman and a sales manager at a VW dealership dating to 1978 (involved with ordering Rabbits, Dashers, Beetle convertibles, Sciroccos and Buses from Germany), the above statement stands to reason and makes perfect sense.

My 914-6 #673 came with a Factory Radio and an option that is not supposed to exist - Tinted Heated Rear Window.

Does the rear window actually have a tint though?

Yes, it is stored away while the tub is being restored.

If you have access to it, could you find if it has printed markings on it, and what they are. A photo would be great. I know that most glass is marked, and I know that the markings differ between tinted and plain glass.

I can't really get to it without tearing my garage apart. I have about 5 rear windows stored together behind my big Snap-On box so nothing could get near them. I will be starting reassembling #673 when I get the tub back. I will remember to come back to this post and post some pics.
