914World.com _ The Paddock _ Engine Purchase

I'm calling on my 914 brothers for their valued opinions. Please help! I'm looking to buy a 3.6 vario-ram 3.6L motor for my 914 and I was wondering what you guys think about this? The company I'm looking to buy the engine from will not provide any compression check data, they say they just won't do it. But they will provide leak down check info. This engine is pretty pricey and I was wondering if not receiving the compression check data would be a deterant for you guys in buying this engine. Thanks a ton!

why would you ever spend a big chunk of cash on something that makes you nervous? I would find another engine. they're not rare.

Who is the seller?

If the motor is out of a car, it's easy to do the leak down and much harder/impossible for the compression test.

agree.gif You would have to fit a flywheel, transmission, and starter. I value leakdown numbers quite a bit more than compression numbers.

plus the engine shouldnt the engine be hot for a compression test?

yes

Many CA suppliers provide 30 day grace periods to return a used engine. When I bought a TIV this way from EASY we had it installed and running within days, so lots of time to make sure it performed to spec. beerchug.gif

Plus, a Varioram takes a bit of cutting to fit a 914...

Most of the parts houses will extend the 30 day guarantee if you tell them it will be a while before you get it in. Leak down should be fine...

that is better info, what's the numbers and mileage ??

The seller is LA Dismantlers. The engine is still in the car and they offered it up to me to drive, which I will. The engine has 61,000 miles and the leak down numbers are 3-4%...pretty good if that's true.

Search member PRS9146 and read the story of his 3.6 install. He bought his at LA Auto as well. Got them to extend the warranty until 30 days after he put it in. Similar miles, needed valve guides or job, and was only running on one distributor.

I would do your search on LA Dismantler. Make sure you get what they promise in writing. I have dreams of doing what your going to do. I see them at the local Porsche meets and they will tell you any thing you want to hear. I simply look at them and just think to myself...now I was not born yesterday - but the day before. Good luck on this journey....post when your done.
