914World.com _ The Paddock _ Going Vintage

Posted by: wndsrfr Feb 26 2018, 08:01 AM

Put on a bit of IMSA livery to register with SVRA. Had a great time at Roebling Road piloting Kermee to 1st place in all three practice races against a field of 18 or so wide variety of marques. Had a rear view mirror full of a couple of BMW's, a Lotus Super Seven, a Nascar Pontiac and even an Ariel Atom, but Kermee really wanted to stay in front so I went along for the ride! Looking to do more Vintage Racing this year...Attached Image

Yep, they're the Hoosier TD's that SVRA wants us to use. I've been on Toyo RR's for years & was not sure about the TD's but find they're great, very pleased with them so far in cool weather use. driving.gif

How did you modify set up. And what pressures did you like?

Posted by: jmz Feb 27 2018, 07:14 AM

Following along with on this one.

...great looking car by the way! What front air dam is that? A Sheridan modified to work with GT Flares perhaps?

The spoiler is Roger Sheridan's--he's selling them through Automotion (Used to be Eckler's) & their shipping is below what he can send them for to my location on East Coast.....here's a link:
https://www.automotion.com/performance-spoiler-with-brake-duct-openings-for-914-porsche-1970-1976.html
No modification to fit up to the front flares.....

I would still love to hear more about your experience going to these tires.

I was trying to find someone who had direct experience with the TD and either hoosiers A/R7 or RA1 tires to compare too

did you modify the alignment, springs, or set up?
what about tire pressure?
any feedback about feel or more importantly... lap times?

thanks
brant

Actually didn't change any setup 'til I can read the wear pattern which after two events doesn't seem to show much yet. Bear in mind that's in cool conditions with my talent level at work, so still not got measurable tire temps to go by yet. Still, dropped 2-3 seconds off of my best lap times at Roebling, so I'm happy thus far. IIRC I'm currently at approx. 1 1/2 degrees negative camber front and 2 1/2 in rear.

Cool...do not slip too far! So what was your time? I have never seen a track neutralize power and reward handling like RRR...

Tony

Lap times were in 1:25's & 1:26's, so not down in your league, but more than 3 secs faster.....but it's a bit apples to pineapples as the engine was refreshed as well.....
Brant....I used the Hoosier recommendation of one psi per hundred as a starting point, so aimed to get 22psi hot. Cold was about 18...

I will have to look for dates on these races, I am 30 minutes from Robeling road and would love to come over and see you guys run some laps!

post dates of when you will be there again!

Posted by: wndsrfr Mar 7 2018, 07:55 PM

There's two VDCA events on the calendar...Sept 7-9 and Dec 7-9 this year. SVRA won't be back 'til '19 likely in February again. Check out Roebling's calendar.....there's always DE events and the like going on...Here's how Race Monitor scored me:

John, good to hear Kermee will be on the Vintage racing circuit. Would be great if you could make the Jefferson 500 at Summit Point in May. Really great event with VRG. Lots of cars! VRG in general puts on a really good show.

Also, you know PCA Club racing also has their Silver class which is all air-cooled up to 1983. Lots of track time with both groups. Check them out, usually have a good showing of 914s. Also the Jefferson 500 has a Porsche feature race which is a hoot. Good to hear from you.

Hmmmmm.....tempting. SVRA at Indy is June 13-17 & likely my only chance to run that venue....so many tracks, so little time/funds....

Cool! Thanks for reporting. I like to hear the 914 keeping up (or passing by) other much more modern cars.

I like that front spoiler...

It's DPv which is "under 2700" along with Mike Spraggins & Paul Behofist....seems like the right place. I see Fred Pfeiffer is CPh and Lenehan is CPv, both "under 3500"....
I don't really know the finer points of the groups actually....but see that the "v" is for 1972 and earlier and the "h" is '73 on and the cut between "C" is for up to 3500cc and "D" is up to 2700.....

Unfortunately I don’t have a vintage legal car...that’s one of the things that once I have space and the new business makes some money I’m hoping to build.

Those are the VRG classes and seems like you would fit in the C group being under 3500.....shoot the organizer an inquiry. Also, I think SVRA would put you in GTO class--that's where they're putting me in Group 12 since I'm over 2.5 liters....gonna be fun running with the big dogs....

So I don’t understand how the engine is legal. According to the rules:

4.2.2. Displacement: The engine must be the original displacement available in that model, with maximum overbore of 0.040” (bores up to 3.5”) or 0.060” (bores over 3.5”). Stroke may not be altered from original.

Since only a 2.0 was available, how is a 2.7 legal? Or a 3.2?

I can’t race Huey anyway, no fuel cell.... but I’m just curious how anything over a 2.0is legal?

Bob---I'm under SVRA's rules for IMSA prepared cars under IMSA rules up to 1984....SVRA has Group 10 GTO that your car will fit in IMO.
Here's a link to the PDF:
https://svra.com/race-groups/
Click on "Detailed Rules" for Group 10 to see the GTO regulations:
(GT2) Trans-Am, IMSA GTO, FIA Grp 4 (1973-1995)
IMSA All-American Sedans (Kelley Cam) BMW 3.5L CSL, M1 Chevrolet Corvette, Camaro DeTomaso Pantera
Jaguar XKE series 3 V12 / XJS Ford Mustang, Mercury Cougar, Capri Ferrari 308/328 GTB Nissan 300ZX
Porsche 930, 934 turbo Porsche 911, 914 (over 3.0L) Triumph TR8

There's another full page of SVRA Group 10 rules that certainly allows displacement above yours even....I'll try to link it, or I'll email a PDF to you....
Also, under VDCA racing there's class 6OV for "Outlaw Vintage" for overprepared cars.....

Yep, you'll need a cell, but need it anyway really....

I've tried to fit into SVRA rules and they tell me no. Don't know why, but I keep hearing No... Porsche never fitted a 3.2 FI engine in a 914, so it's not IMSA rule legal either I guess.

Huey is honestly not a track race car - its heavy, street legal, and has carpeting. I have no real reason to put a fuel cell in it for street use since we need the front trunk space for weekend trips we use it for, and the fuel cell I sell that fits in the tank space is more money than I want to spend for a street car. And with a bone stock 3.2 engine only making about 220 hp, its not even close to being competitive for GTO class - or any race class for that matter. Plus I have 993 brakes on it - again, not legal for anything.

And they CERTAINLY will never allow Papa Smurf...

One day i'll build a vintage legal car. For now, we use Huey for hillclimbs, autocrosses, and street weekend trips.

I have a cell in mine...I could just pull the plugs on four cylinders! biggrin.gif

Take the wing off papa smurf They will let you race There is one car I know that has a 3.2. And possibly a few more(I have been a Porsche mechanic since 1968 and can sort of tell by the sound of their engines) Iam sure they will be happy to have you. SVRA is a different story.

Posted by: MikeSpraggi Apr 10 2018, 09:38 PM

Typically, Papa Smurf would be no problem in VRG without the wing.....but I guess that's what makes Papa the Papa! Engine size and brakes not meeting true vintage...they move you up in class(es). So yea, big engines are out there, so are big brakes.
