914World.com _ The Paddock _ Disable steering lock - 914-6

Posted by: jhynesrockmtn Mar 27 2020, 05:00 PM

My 914-6 GT clone is a car that was built using a real 914-6 donor for some parts including the dash from talking to the builder.

He used it for solo PCA events in CA back in the late 90's.

The steering wheel lock still functions but not very well. I don't want to get held up in tech for having an operable steering lock.

Anybody have advice as to how to go about this? The few articles I've seen on Pelican reference 911's and 914-4 cars and they were a bit fuzzy on the details.

Good plan to remove the steering lock. Aside from meeting the rules, it's just a good idea. I saw a track-prepared 914 roll once during a tow-in after being disabled on track. The driver had forgotten to put the keys back in when the tow truck arrived, and it rolled at the first turn after the wheel locked. Unfortunately he also hadn't put his helmet or belts back on for the tow in, and wound up in the hospital after being thrown from the car when it rolled.

I did the mod to my 914/4 track car. Same idea but the parts are different on the /4 with the key/lock on the steering column.
