I've posted in the main forum, but here is the response I got from the event Chairman.

Yes we allow... as this is NOT a beginners type of event, we do require some form of competition driving experience. I'm sure most of your members would fit the bill!

We have an entry limit of 60 drivers.

We mail entry packets in a few weeks, so send me addresses and I will see that you get them.

We always enjoy meeting new people... makes life interesting! Loren Fisher

Get me your contact information and I'll send it up to Loren.

This could end up being a blast. I know Andrew was very interested. I'd love to see the blue bomber running up that hill!

Where do I sign up? My car would rip in a hill climb event.

Do you have a link to a website with info on the hillclimb? I had one from previous years but it's not working.

No links Drew, but if you'll e-mail me your name and contact information I'll send it up to Loren who is organizing the event.

In turn he'll send you a packet of information to fill out and send back.

So far we have 3 people pretty serious about going up.

Any links to the actual road where this event occurs? I would like to drive it before the event if I am accepted.

As I said earlier the club that sponsors this event isn't what we'd be used to here in the bay area. But here is a link I found:

http://www.redwoodmatrix.net/rscc/Hillclimb_Mailer.pdf

If you want the registration packet please e-mail me your contact information and I'll get it up to the event president.

Posted by: drew365 May 25 2006, 07:26 PM

Thanks for the link. That gives me some info. What is the entry fee? It's a long drive for four runs but I'm interested. There's something about a hillclimb I guess partly because they are so few and far between.

One of the event chairpersons (Nancy) just called me. She'll be faxing the application to me tomorrow, along with all the logistic information.

As soon as I scan the entry struff we'll get it sent out to everyone via e-mail.

We can converse on line about which hotel, lunch menu, etc.

More tomorrow.

I just got my entry forms from Tina. Right now I'm thinking that I'll pull a gonzo drive up on the proceding Thursday. I'll be coming out of south Orange county. Anyone want to caravan, meet for lunch, dinner, whatever on the way? I'll be driving the hillclimber...

I'm not positive I'm going but I'm hoping to. If I do, I plan on leaving L.A. early Friday morning like about 6 a.m. I'm hoping it can be a 10 hour drive which would get me there in time for evening tech and drivers meeting. Is this too optomistic? I really don't want to have to make it a 5 day weekend.

It's 520 miles from Button Willow to Eureka, so that is about 10 hours at normal highway speeds. How long does it take you to get to Button Willow from LA?

Wow man. I google-earthed the drive. It says 702 miles from Dana Point to Eureka. I think 10 hours may be a little optimistic. You're towing aren't you?

Posted by: drew365 Jun 19 2006, 08:11 PM

Google says it's 642 miles from my place in SF Valley. Doable, but definitely a long day. I'm assuming the trip across 299 is pretty windy? Yes, I tow a 20ft. enclosed trailer with my diesel p/u. A lot of trouble for four runs, I'm not feeling real positive about it right now.

Posted by: kdfoust Jun 20 2006, 09:27 AM

After sleeping on this I've decided that 4 passes isn't enough for a 1500 mile drive. I'm out. If I happen to be in that area at the right time some day...

299 is very twisty - great 914 road. For those towing remember it will be scorching hot coming up HWY 5. I sent in registration today!

I have driven 299 pulling a trailer and it is about a 25 mph average. You can't speed on 299 as it is real sharp curves and windy. Great for someone driving their teen. I would like to go but it is too far for only 4 runs from Corona. I will be running in St. John's, AZ the next weekend on a airport track.

Who is registered and what are your plans? I think my wife, Sheilah, is going to come along and we'll have our dog too. I have a camping set up for the truck, but thinking it might be fairly miserable if its real hot. ...So thinking of staying in a hotel close by.

Posted by: nebreitling Jul 3 2006, 01:49 PM

hey grant!

i sent in my registration, but haven't heard any confirmation... have you?

anyway, i'm in. i'll by trailering up, Zoya is coming (so i'm glad Sheilah will be there -- they'll have someone to hang out with), and the tentative plan is to camp, but we might decide on a local motel also. i've offered to Randal to co-drive my car, but haven't heard one way or the other. i think he was still interested in coming -- even if just to spectate -- but that might have changed. most everyone
(Bill P, Dan, et al) else is prolly headed to the GGR TT.

could you email me a day time ph number? it'd be nice to camp/lodge next to each other.

I havent had confirmation yet either although I recieved a brochure on the hillclimb. Figured I would call within the next week to confirm if I dont get anything else.

Did you find any places to camp? I was hoping to find a place that had showers etc. If not I think I may camp the first night and then do motel.

I will have the "new" truck and will be flat towing if I dont find a trailer.

Sheilah thinks this will be fun. I'm still not sure ....dragging 914 behind a truck in 100 degree weather ...sweating like crazy .....to drive up a hill a couple of times? Sounds sort of silly to me. clap56.gif

And yes I think caravan would be a great!

so grant, according to the brochure, we need to be up there on Friday for Tech from 4-8pm and the driver's meeting at 8.30pm.

yahoo maps says it's 6 hours from SF. i can't tell if it'd be faster going up the 5 or the 101. would you like to meet in SF at like 10am? that ought to give us time to deal with the inevitable flat tire, eat lunch, check into a motel, and make tech with some time for dinner.

edit: also, it's windows up or arm restraints/window-net -- and a 5BC extinguisher. i think you'll need side-bars to make your cage GCR legal, but i doubt they'd call you on that...

Sounds good. I will have extinguisher and will figure out a window net. Given my car is street legal and will have top I dont think I will get much crap for lack of side bars.

yeah. they say you don't need window nets if you roll up the widows. weird rule, seems like it should be the opposite in terms of 'driver extraction' -- but maybe they're expecting us to roll the car into some trees or something. yay.

Randal is still interested in coming up, should be a party!

there's not much in hoopa. i think the nearest motel would be in willow springs(?. i can't find my cal road map right now). it's the town where the 96 meets the 299. about 15 to 20 mintues from hoopa. hope this helps.

It will be interesting to see how our cars compare in a hillclimb. I think my car's torque and fat tires are definitely going to help, but you will have a weight advantage.

Posted by: nebreitling Jul 13 2006, 05:25 PM

your car is faster, no doubt. my car would better excel in quick transitions (lower polar moment; less weight), but it doesn't look like so terribly much of that here. that's alright -- i've got the reflexes of a younger man!

joking aside, let's remind each other to keep the red mist under control, lest we start competing. i'd like to bring the same car back that i went up in. i'll drive at 8/10ths, but no more.

Driving fast on a paved hillclimb is about being smooth and taking the right line and less about reflexes. You'll probably need those "superior" quick reflexes to compensate for that cowboy backwoods "wish I were a county fair dirt track driver" style of yours. ...Sorry we dont have a cowboy smilie! biggrin.gif

Dont worry about red mist I have a healthy respect for trees. yoda.gif

you don't need arm restraints if you keep your windows rolled up, grant. my car no longer has windows....

Mark, you can ride with zoya, randal, and I. I'll reserve some motel rooms at $60/night or so... you can split that with ranadl.

my truck will be loaded the hell down! can't wait!

Three rooms reserved, July 28 and 29

Grant, Sheila and Dog (they say that pooch is fine so long as he stays off the bed)

Nathan, Zoya (if this rooms a rockin' -- don't come a knockin')

Randal, Mark
$69/night

This sounds awesome! Thanks again Nathan! Bought and installed heavy duty trailer hitch for the truck today. Looked at some new trailers and a tow dolly too. Cant say tow dolly floats my boat. Looking at a used trailer tomrrow.

Sheilah and I will bring a buch of stuff (wine and snacks) too. We have room in the truck to pack stuff if needed Nathan. Mark, We only have front bench seat in front with Toby (our dog) so it might get a little too cozy in our truck. Definitely can plan to throw your gear in the back of the cab however. Eventually I will be finding a seat for the back of the cab.

This is going to be great!

Posted by: nebreitling Jul 16 2006, 12:30 AM

So the plan is that Grant and I will meet in Vacaville (near the 80/505 juntion) at 10:30am. Mark, I'll swing by Napa at around 9:45am to pick you up.

Grant, is Los Gatos on they way for you? I'm just wondering if you could pick up Randal...

Yes Los Gatos is on my way. As long as Randal doesnt mind riding with me, my wife and the dog on the bench seat. Dog has to ride in front or he gets car sick. barf.gif I think we can do that for a couple hours, but dont think we want to go much longer than that.

Too many obligations at work. Not enough time to get away for a long weekend. Nathan, I sent you an email. I truly appreciate you looking into this event, but I just cant make it with everything that has come up recently at work. Thanks again! I'll probably just go to local Marina AX.

I'm the first one back.

HOOPA IS AWESOME!!!!

The hill is great, the people are super friendly, and the event is really well organized. We got 15 cars up the hill in about 30 minutes.

Nathan did really really great and won his class by a huge margin.

He was the only 914. There was a 911 as well, but he wasn't as experienced as Nate.

Here's a shot of us unloading the car. Check out the AMAZING scenery!

Thanks for the info Mark. What was the top time for the weekend and what kind of car set it?

Posted by: McMark Jul 31 2006, 11:57 AM

Here is the first of Randal's videos. This is the TTOD car. Corvette powered 240Z. Can you say QUICK?! IIRC, he posted a 2:18.xx run. ohmy.gif

http://www.914world.com/members/markd/hooopa/P1010153.MOV

It developed an exhaust leak on the second day and was backfiring at every corner.

Posted by: Randal Jul 31 2006, 11:58 AM

Hoopa, just rambling:

Man do I wish Bill Pickering had brought his 911.. I think we could have posted some fast times, while still being safe.

Anyway, Hoopa is probably one of the best hills around for your first venture into hill climbing. It is a road in very good condition, but like all hill climbs you need to learn the course before trying to drive past 8 on a 10 scale. Maybe 7 depending upon skills.

It is very fast in places. My guess is that some of the high HP cars were going over 110 in places (4 gear). Nathan was even using 4 gear and wishing for a short ratio box every time he shifted!

This isn’t like an autox that you can learn in 3 runs. My guess is that it really does take years to learn, which is what they say.

Every single corner has it bumps or camber changes that will throw your car someplace you don’t want. A posi is highly recommended, otherwise you simply have to give it up, plant the car and get going again. The Turbos were laying rubber, leaving the corner for 75 yards.

My feeling after watching it for two days is that it’s one of the most challenging venues around. It is also a driving experience that you can’t get any other way. If you run this hill you’ll be thinking about it all year.

The drive up was long via 101, but it is a beautiful road. Hoopa is actually about 50 miles beyond Eureka going North East.

You can sometimes easily forget how beautiful California is, but that will quickly dissipate after this trip.

There were only 30 cars at the event.

The ones that blew my mind were a 72 240Z Datsun – This was a beautiful hybrid will all the suspension tricks and a Corvette engine. It absolutely tore up that hill as the power to weight ratio was 1000 lbs better than a new vette and Dave (driver) was unbelievable.

A Cadillac STS. You never laugh at a caddie after you see one driven on the hill like this one. They are crazy quick and handle exactly like a sports car. Being 4000lbs they aren’t going to be as fast as a Vette, whom with they share engines, but believe me they are fast and they handle. I don’t know the exact model, but I’m going to find out.

A bug eyed sprite that was a purpose built race car with 10 inch slicks and a modified Datsun B210 motor. The driver knew the hill, was using every inch and was trying to catch his buddy in the 240 Datsun but never did.

Of course my favorite car on the hill was Nathan's. The first time I saw him come up I was really surprised how fast he was going. Check out the videos which Mark is going to post for me. As usual Nathan had great lines and did extremely well for his first time out, winning his class in a car that desperately needed a posi, a short ratio box and would have been faster with sticky autox hoosiers.

I learned a great deal about the hill and all the other hill climb events from Terry, who shared my corner (seven). Terry drove a Formula Ford, but ended up having starter problems the second day. I never did see his time, but he looked fast abet having only driven the car with a Hewland 5 times.

My last thought is how sick I was to not be driving on the hill. Bill Pickering’s 2200 / 300HP car would have been absolutely perfect for the hill. Of course, no way you could run the front spoiler as the steep inclines would rip it off. Like in the first big left corner….very steep.

I also think my car (when finished) would do well.

BTW all the club people we met were great. The Indians on the reservations were all nice and glad to have us running the hill.

There was this lady though, that flipped us off and told us to “go home”. But 1 out of 300 isn’t bad. We of course just smiled and waved back.

I think the job the Redwood Sports Car Club does is just fantastic.

Actually he didn't just "develop" an exhaust leak.

On the afternoon session of Sunday on Dave's first run he came just tearing up the hill. Check out the video... which isn't speeded up. Anyway Dave waited until the second cone to brake and when he braked the car kind of lunched to the right. I thought maybe a caliper locked up, but he went into a big spin right below where I was standing.

Believe me that 240 is a big car sideways and he managed to turn it around the opposite way (trying to save it) and ran into the small curb (5") with his suspension compressed; hence the leak where he hit the small inside curb.

We (course workers) ran out to stop the course, but Dave did a quick turn around and headed up the hill. Didn't have to shut down the course.

There after he had a bad exhause leak that was exploding every time he let off.

Hell, can't a guy have a good time without the whole world finding out?

BTW JLO (sorted out) with slicks might be a whole lot of fun.

Seems like JLO may be the ticket. No clearance issues with the spoiler and short runs...she's got enough torque to move it up that hill....

We'd have to warm the slicks up before going up the hill...maybe that's an excuse to get those chicken hawk tire warmers!

just got in -- after the awards ceremony Z and I were tuckered out, ended up just getting a motel room on the way down.

wow, what a fun weekend. thank you Mark, Randal, Zoya icon12.gif for all your help and great company. it was a long weekend for only 15-some minutes of seat time, but it was fantastic, challenging, and draining seat time. the adrenaline rush is short of skydiving, but far beyond TT/AX.

we've all driven faster than we should on twisty back roads, but typically only at 5/ or 6/10ths. at 8/ and 9/10ths (I never drove 10/10ths), things become.... different: camber changes in the road become corner-exit spin-zones; small dips and rises become jumps (no shit); winter road damage becomes a brake-zone nightmare. because the roads are crowned, your car gets light just moving from one side to the other. you are constantly manging weight/traction. putting a wheel off in the wrong place could be a disaster. i spun once, but kept it on the road and raced off (i did, however, leave my balls behind...)

part of the rush is, no doubt, a bit of danger. while you probably wouldn't die if you waded your car up, you could get seriouslyfuckinghurt and/or completely demolish your car. nobody did any of that this weekend (the worst was a bent rim and ripped exhaust), but there are stories told by hoopa veterans of cars rolling off the hill, getting stuck in berry bushes, tangled in trees... they have EMTs stationed mid-course to get to folks quick when necessary.

SO, i ran a 2:41 2:33 2:32 2:32 2:31 2:30 for the weekend. still don't have the hill 'quite' figured out, but it could take a few years at only 6/runs per year. fresher/stickier tires would have gotten me maybe a couple seconds (i wore my tired 710s). a posi/lsd is a MUST -- god knows how much time went up in inside-rear tire spin. but, most importantly, bring power. as much as you can afford. power is everything on this hill. there are some 14-15% grade sections. it will soak up everything you've got.

the RSCC are good people. i think they could get more runs up the hill, but the laidback/relaxed tone of the club is nice. they do have a nice system in place for timing and safety. nice people. very thorough tech inspection, which made an impression on me. the hoopa tribe was also very welcoming and generous.

so, who's up for it next year?

btw, mark/randal: i beat that 1200 lbs 170 hp sprite by 2 seconds!

i ran no air filters on day two. anything for any power. next year, i'll bring a megaphone (and hopefully a short gearbox/lsd!)

i need to campaign a kart next year.

I watched the video!

Sounded like you where in 5th coming up to the corner and downshifted in 4th right before drifting the car out. It looked GREAT!!

I cant imagine drifting the car over the crown.. I'm sure this didnt help when it came to wheel spin.

Gary.. Gary.. with the super chopped 912.. used to ask me to run the Virginia City Hill Climb every year.

That was great news on the Sprite, given the driver was really hanging it out on the corners I watched, and had driven the hill for years.

Your comments about driving mountain roads are so true. Going from driving 7 or 8 tenths to flat out (10 tenths) on a hillclimb is much more difficult than it would seem. So many more variables on a hill as it is constantly changing.

Interesting about the Caddie as while HP seems to be KING, cornering has a critical importance as well. You were very close to that the Caddie and it does 0-60 in under 5 second Nathan.

what safety requirements are needed?

Posted by: McMark Jul 31 2006, 11:36 PM

Trekkor, all of them are under 1 mb, most are 600-700k.

Aaron, I have a welded diff if you want one. Randal and Nathan both thought a welded would work fine on the hill.

Safety, AFAIK, was a helmet and arm restraints or closed cockpit. Nathan can correct me if I'm wrong.

Posted by: nebreitling Aug 1 2006, 10:51 AM

i think a welded diff would work fine (great, even) if you have some moderate power. less than 140 hp or so, and i think lsd would work better. just my sense of things...

safety req depends on what class your car is in. honestly, i wouldn't go up the hill in just a helmet and long sleeve shirt/jeans, though some people did. you really could seriouslyfuckinghurt yourself on this hill. much more dangerous than your average track event. a good minimum for a 914 with under 140hp would be a rollbar, 5-point harnesses, extinguisher, full-face helmet, nomex gloves/shoes. biggest safety factor is excellent car control skills and a bit of restraint.

yeah, in addition to the safety stuff i mentioned above, i have a 1/2 cage, full SFI-5 suit, arm restraints, FIA seat, nomex collar, few other bits...

We had a small fire racing up the canyon to my place a couple weeks ago. Tell you what! The guys who fly water tankers have balls of steel. They would come in feet above 150 foot redwood trees and then pull up out of the canyon as they dropped water. I'm sure if the didnt time the release perfect that they wouldnt have been able to climb out in time. I was in awe.

Man I'm still kicking myself for not going to Hoopa!

Grant,

I think with AX Slicks, that I would have been pleased to loan you, your car would rock at Hoopa.

Hope you make it up next time.

Thanks Randal. I have new 710's ready to mount on my wheels, big 265's in back and 225's in the front. By Hoopa next year I may even have a bigger motor in the car.

Only 8 more months to Hoopa.

Sneek up on it. Start driving about 6/10ths, until you feel comfortable.

Posted by: McMark Nov 29 2006, 10:36 PM

Nathan, are you going to run your shifter kart up the hill this year? Or will you be co-driving something?

Posted by: nebreitling Nov 30 2006, 12:01 AM

i don't know. i'm not sure if they'd even allow a kart on the hill -- and i'm not sure that the surface of the road would be conducive to a vehicle with no suspension... i've been offered a ride up the hill, but i'm not sure i'll take it.

in any case, my '07 race schedule isn't published yet, so i don't know if i'll even be free. i'm trying to be competitive in two different series next year, which will mean 14 or so race weekends (plus practice, testing, travel, etc).

IF I'm free, however, then I'm there -- even if I'm not driving!! It was SUCH a help to have you and Randal there last, the least I can do is return the favor to someone else. I can sling a wrench, haul shit, and party as good as most!

public service message to 914club members: this even is really fun. It's not a lot of seat time given the tow up, but it's an experience to remember.

Posted by: grantsfo Nov 30 2006, 12:00 PM

I will be completely set for this next year. I just wasnt ready this year and had hectic work schedule that didnt allow me to get away. If anyone who I'd trust wants to drive my car wants to co-drive I'd be willing to share my car. Not sure if the hillclimb format allows for co-driving?

My car should be fairly zoomie next year.

Posted by: nebreitling Nov 30 2006, 12:26 PM

the format does allow for co-driving -- there are two run-groups.
