914World.com _ The Paddock _ Joe's best run

Posted by: Joe Ricard Jun 24 2006, 08:54 PM

Well I was out there in 98 degree heat and played slip and slide through the cones.

Fastest run was 4th run .... till I spun.

So here is the best no spin.

Oh yea I sucked. Got beat by 2 brand new ZO6's and a Street Prepared Cobra Mustang.
and some other sumpthin I think the time screwed up on a few cars.

Linkey no workie. WTF.gif

Workie now.....you sux laugh.gif

Yea I sux but what the hell I'm out there Driving.

Any real critique would be welcome too.

My last run WAS so much faster going into the 2nd turn. I figured got my clean run and still not fast enough. so I let it really hang out. Ended up spinning going in too fast. OOPS

on the 3rd run I peaked at 1.35 Lateral G's with 1.2 sustained. I was cornering quiickly just didn't have the HP to pull down the long sections

I was really just giving you a hard time poke.gif

But........Your start cost you at least a half second (or more) and you were "behind" in a few spots....or so it appeared. It's tough to be a judge on the latter, but the start was gawd awful.

Personally, I have given up worrying about 1st gear....if it blows, it blows. I hit the start lights with as much speed as I can. If possible (and most times it is), I'll start at an angle towards the first apex cone on one of those 90 deg start jobbies then go for it.....this is not without risk, of course, but then AX is about risks in search of time, eh?

Only thing I saw was I thought you over braked for that last left turn.

I seem to over brake too much. After going through the turn I realize I could have taken it faster.

Start sucked. I was having problems with idle jets. Engine bogged and was just pissing me off. sorta throws out the concentration factor right out the freaking window ..
after the last run where I was full out and actually had a great launch. (got to spin the tires to get it rev'ed)
After the last run I was barely able to get it back to the paddock area.
Driving on slicks takes a bit more finesse they DO make it easier to lock. wheels and tires are 11 pounds lighter than Diamonds and DOT Hoosiers.
Also wanted to know how low on tire pressure I could go. I believe the spin was evidence that I went too low (21 PSI is WAY to low). Got the tires loaded in the turn and then snap they let go. I think they rolled over and lifted the face off the pavement. 24 F 26 R was about the best.
So enough tuning with that.

Them skinny wheels are doing you bad.
20 psi cold is about right for me, then keep them there.....tho I've been as low as 16 with no ill effects, but NOT with the cantilevers. Those sidewalls are not near as stiff as the straight sides. I've found slicks very forgiving if you keep the back end within 10-15 degs. Beyond that, it gets ugly....beyond ugly is backwards laugh.gif

Well I have been watching my spin out video over and over.
I've come to conclude I just screwed to pooch by driving in too hot. and braking WAY too late. (like when I was turning) I honestly thoughtI coulda made it but I was haulin the mail much quicker than the 3 previous laps.

Stiffer side wall tires will be my next set. Right now these Formula atlantic tires are just going to have to teach me how to drive a finer line of "on the edge"

I seem to want to tip-toe around some of the corners with these slicks 'cause I'm afraid I'm going to over cook the corner and won't be able to catch it. They are like night and day when hot and cold.

Tell you the truth I thought I'd be faster than I am. But maybe I just need to learn how to drive with them. sad.gif

Yup, I agree. I think it is the soft side wall. turn in is slow and I find myself getting into some large slip angles getting the car to turn.
DOT A3SO4 Hoosiers have much stiffer side walls and the car turns in really quickly.

I think I will be looking at the GOODYEAR 23 x 9 x 15 R250 tires next.

Paul I forgot what pressure you were running in yours.

We had SO many participants that every run was a cold run and 37 only seconds long. not much cornering. No slaloms just blast down and back. 2316 sure woulda been cool.

Posted by: URY914 Jun 25 2006, 08:33 PM

I run them at 21 psi.

Posted by: grantsfo Jun 25 2006, 08:34 PM

Start could have been a little faster, I would have tried to keep the car out further to the right a little more while setting up before the first gate, youre yanking at the wheel in some of the transitions and doing small corrections that are taking time - could be smoother, some sawing on the wheel in one of the later corners, over braking in last corner was pointed out. Youre still very fast!

Fun riding with you!

Joe, you looked killer fast!

At the WCC you have the drivers seat of my car reserved for at least a couple passes...purely in the interest of science. biggrin.gif

I'll not be taking in the Saturday tour & will be at PIR both days. The AX is open both days.....go figure.

Well that seems to be about right. since I have 500 pounds on you. I felt the tires were best at 24 psi. What learning curve huh?
The more I watch the videos the more I find my mistakes.
could it be the last time I autocrossed my car I was wearing a jacket? The track day was so different it don't count.

JP, you just made my rainy Monday morning very sweet. I was hoping someone would let me steal a drive. Thanks a million.
