914World.com _ The Paddock _ Marina a/x July 30th

Posted by: trekkor Jul 12 2006, 07:39 PM

That's right...I just got confirmation that I will be the course designer, once again, after a year off. naughty.gif

Expect a fun and flowing course with no "fake-outs" or tricks.

Should be a one minute course and plan on at least ten runs each if the usual 45-50 shows up.
We usually do about an hour of fun-runs after 3:30 before clean-up.

Logan, one of the a/x chairs runs a "built" Miata with a supercharger and loves to gives us a good run. we'll get 'em.

I leave for vacation the next day, but I am going to try and make it.... burnout.gif

Posted by: nebreitling Jul 12 2006, 09:18 PM

awesome, trek! grant, randal and i will still be running the hillclimb on sunday. shame, because i've enjoyed every course you've designed!

Logan is a great guy and great driver -- but he hasn't mangaged to beat me yet, even when with his fatty 710s smile.gif

for those of you on the fence, i can tell you that the last course trek designed at marina was quite brilliant.

Dan -- you're not going to the GGR TT?

Posted by: Dan (Almaden Valley) Jul 12 2006, 10:26 PM

Nope, no more TTs this season until the motor is rebuilt. Don't want to kill any more mosquitoes. Too much oil getting past the valve guides under high side g loads. Then the car is a two stroker for about 3 seconds. sad.gif
Just going to keep flogging it at Axs.

don't have enough sustained side g loads at any of the AX courses to cause the same situation. smile.gif

Posted by: nebreitling Jul 12 2006, 10:50 PM

hmmm, sorry to hear it. gonna wait for the off season to rebuild?

in about a week, you could pull out the engine, do a quick 'n dirty valve job, and install...

Posted by: Dan (Almaden Valley) Jul 12 2006, 11:01 PM

going to wait until offseason and do a complete rebuild....

get the case gone thru,....align bored, arp retainers, crank nitrited and reground with new bearings, new cam, new lifters, new push rods, new P/Cs, refurbish heads with new valves, guides, seats blah blah blah

Anyway, I am going to wait until I can do the entire thing....also want to detail and paint the engine compartment at the same time, reposition battery to trunk. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Posted by: grantsfo Jul 12 2006, 11:09 PM

Sorry to miss this one. Sounds like fun. Hill climb will be funner however.

Posted by: brant Jul 12 2006, 11:22 PM

can't wait to see pics of the hill climb...
hey grant, how come you ran the mazda at that last autox..?

you going to run the mazda or the teener in the Hill climb?

Still sorting the 914 out - tons of little issues. So rather than do half as$ job I decided to do everything at once and it wasnt finnished for the local GGR AX last Saturday. I look for excuses to drive the Mazda too.

I'm headed to track day at Infineon next week in the 914 and will be in the 914 for the Hill climb.

Posted by: brant Jul 12 2006, 11:57 PM

good deal then.
I would sure like to hear about it after your experience.

Trek - I was shooting to have my car ready for another AX for the next RR in early August. I liked that course and my instructor. smile.gif

I finished my welding class and will need to find a spare day on a weekend (or take a day off) to weld in the new battery tray. I am hoping to have my neighbor or a 914club member able to loan the welding machine (I'll drive over there and do the work at their location) then with some luck it should only take an hour or so to be done. beerchug.gif

As soon as this fix is done, I'm ready to go! It sure would be nice to be done by Marina idea.gif

Posted by: Demick Jul 13 2006, 10:15 AM

I'm going to try and make it. I've missed so many GGR events this year that I really want to try and make it out for this one.

Chris, If you want to meet me after my track at Sears on Friday the 21st you ( we ) can repair your car with the welder. welder.gif

Demick, awesome!! This Miata guy needs some 914 pressure.

He says the 911 guys are complaining about another "Miata course"...

I told him when people say to me, " What, another 914 course?"

I say, " yes, they ALL are!!" chairfall.gif

The course has been approved and I'm tempted to post it here naughty.gif

Well....I can't claim sole responsibility.
By the time the National folks got thru with us, some changes were made....for the better, I might add. Our initial layout was too damn fast for an autocross...IMO.

I doubt Martin is in. A lot going on in his life right now. Selling his house and moving and such...

I think I am in. I have to look for accomodations in Marina or Seaside but I am thinking I will come down because it is a Trekkor course... Six if I can, 4 if I can't.

I have a small problem with registration on the Bumble Bee Racer... Because it has a branded title, DMV is saying that CHP has to inspect it... Not sure how soon that can happen. I am sure IPB will be done, just not sure CHP can get it inspected since today is my only day off between now and then.

Rob -

Thanks for the good wishes. I spent the weekend working on getting the Blue car ready - cleaned from top to bottom, from aft to stern (doesn't know anyting nautical - lol) - and doing some mechanical maintenance. No fun when it is well north of 100 and humid. Joy and I are looking forward to Parade as are the kids. We will try to do SVR proud in August!

Next time you see Martin - wish him the best - hopefully he can make it out the Stockton in September.

JP -

I am so curious to see how the course is going to lay out and how fast we will be going. BTW I am glad that they are slowing it down... there are way to many people that come out and this is the only time they autocross etc...

Joy and I are planning to be there on Saturday as well - then start making the drive to Redding that afternoon... THAT will be a long day - autocross all day then drive from Portland to Redding ;-)

See you there!

Steve

Posted by: Dan (Almaden Valley) Jul 24 2006, 11:16 AM

Good luck Steve and Joy at Parade smile.gif

And Yes Trekkor, I should be at Marina as long as I get everything prepared for my vacation that begins on the 31st. Heading to Oroville for RVing and Boating/skiing.

Need to make sure all the RV stuff is loaded and in order, food in place etc. If it all gets done during the week then I will be at Marina. biggrin.gif

Steve:

If you go to the Oregon Region web site & pre-register for the Saturday event,
it will offer you morning or afternoon session....so you could be out of there by noonish.

As for the big event, there are 2 or 3 3rd gear corners...made trickier by them bastards with the cones biggrin.gif ....and a couple of straights that will take you to 70-80.

To my way of thinkin', your typical AX set-up/alignment will get ya in trouble.
I cranked in some front bar and am hoping for the best.

Trek,

Your on! I just made my reservations for the Comfort Inn at the north end of Marina. I should be there by 6pm or so.
I still don't know which car I will be in. Rumor has it the Tangerine Header will be here soon. So the 4 might be up on the jack stands. The 6 is at IPB in Sacramento but should be done. I would rather drive the 6 down than trailer the 4. The trailer needs tires and that is a bit too far to trust the rat rubber that is on it. Too late to get that done by the weekend.
Martin is looking like a no go but he sends his regards to all...

So Trekkor,

Is this course designed to be 914 friendly?

Looks pretty promising for the HP deficient cars amongst us:D

Not really. I think everyone should enjoy it.

I wish I had some more tire. I'm fighting the urge to bring my good tires.
I will be driving on junk.

Good so will I. I'm on those slippery Victoracers. Nathan said you had more grip than me at Sears. I believe it. These things are worthless. I actually think the course will be beneficial to higher hp cars. Some of those corners will slow people down enough that power will be a factor.

Posted by: Dan (Almaden Valley) Jul 28 2006, 11:39 PM

My Victoracers are getting to the end of their heat cycles too. sad.gif

We will see...I have made some adjustments to my brake bias so we will see if I get a little less front lock at lower speeds... smile.gif driving.gif driving.gif

Posted by: Borderline Jul 29 2006, 09:20 AM

I'll be there on a new set of Falken Azenis. I made the mistake of doing the BMW brake caliper "upgrade" and now can't stand it. The pedal feels like a sponge and the fronts lock up way too easily. The engine is a tired 1.8 with weber 40's. It's been about thirty years since I ax'd last. Should be good for some laughs. biggrin.gif

I think I will like it. Gives me some corners I can get into and out of quick with my suspension setup and some judicial application of trail braking to get the rear end to rotate.
We'll see biggrin.gif

Actually very similar to the tight, technicaal course I designed for the AX school last weekend. happy11.gif
Kept the newer cars at bay, due to the decreasing radius turns and such....lots of understeer in those new cars if you don't know how to use the brakes and throttle to unsettle/rotate the car at the right times. driving.gif

Posted by: Borderline Jul 29 2006, 01:43 PM

Thanks Dan. Where did you get it? I thought Trekkor said it was imbedded with some other courses on the GGR site. I've been through both sites..I guess I didn't look in the right places..Thanks. Looks like fun. Is there a place where I can stop and ask for directions if I get lost? The way the course doubles back on itself, it looks like it will be dangerous to have multple cars on course at the same time. See you tomorrow,
Bill

Posted by: trekkor Jul 29 2006, 01:56 PM

The starter will not release any new cars until the first car reaches point #2. This WILL be made very clear at the driver's meeting.

The last course we ran with a loop was very well recieved and there were no wrong turns and very few DNF's ( did not finish's ) wink.gif

#'s 3 and 4 represent locations of car spacing during the runs.

The scale is 100' per square.
When the cars rejoin the main course it's full throttle for 800'.
3rd gear for everyone!!

The "x's" on the map are safe course worker positions.
Also in the driver's meeting people need to be ready with their red flags.
Better to be safe and get a re-run, then worry that people might think you were wrong to throw the flag.

While I dont have tires I certainly have a car that might make him work hard for TTOD. Pulled another 25 lbs off the car today and I'll run without the top. Unfortunately I think I have raised the car just a little too high.

Picked up some long sexy aluminum ramps for free yesterday. No more driving truck on ramps to unload the car from the trailer!

I'll see you tomorrow as well....make sure you check out your old wheels on my whip.
We will see how it goes....HP or suspension/old age/treachery burnout.gif

Trekkor, what time you going to get there....I'll be there to help with setup... smile.gif

Posted by: scrz914 Jul 30 2006, 12:02 AM

I'll bring my 911 but it has an oil leak and I don't think drivers need anymore help sliding on the course. I thought about it tho'.

Posted by: grantsfo Jul 30 2006, 12:49 AM

Dan, You should do just fine at Marina with LPR crowd. I was top 5 in my Mazda 6 Sedan last AX. You may even come away with TTOD. A couple of 2.0 drivers have done this in the past. These events arent as competitive as GGR events, but they are a heck of a lot more fun!

Posted by: trekkor Jul 30 2006, 05:01 AM

I'll be pulling into Marina area around 6:30. I'll stop for fuel, coffee and be at the gate around 6:45-ish.

Gates open at 7:00 yawn.gif
Thanks for the help. That'll be great.

First report on the day at the beach biggrin.gif

So not a bad day for 914s.

Tom Provasi had out the Orange Crate and set a blistering 67+ (this was a very long course)

Grant was in the hunt with a 72+

Trekkor got down to a 73+ I believe

I got down to a 75.5

Albert was at 76

I know that Bill was at 77+ after the morning runs...but I did not see him run in the PM.

I don't know how Rob was doing.

Anything 76 or below was a very good time on this course....

Many newer cars were struggling to get below 80.

This course rewarded cars with horsepower and handling....I had one but not the other.

It will be interesting when the results are posted.....hopefully not another 3 weeks plus like last event.

TTOD - No chance of catching Tom on this course!

The blue machine on wickedly slippery Victoracers. I couldnt get any heat into my tires regardless of how hard I tried. Rob took my tire temps and they were between 75 to 90 degrees. This course also played to my car's weakness due to no LSD. I was spinning the unloaded tire on the exit of a couple turns. Probably could have firmed up my front bar

I'm home yellowsleep[1].gif

We had a blast, once again.
10 timed runs each plus I ran 5-6 fun-runs in about 10 minutes.

Thanks for the help with course set-up/safety, Dan.

This may have been the very longest a/x course at Marina.
A lot of happy drivers told me how much fun they were having throughout the day.

Looking foward to the two day zone a/x next month back at Marina.

I couldn't believe it. I saw Grant checking his pressures and I had just checked mine and my temps. A course that is between a minute fifteen and a minute thirty and my tires were only a little over and under 100 degrees.

Grant however had basically room temperature tires! I wish someone had been there with a camera!

I had problems with my injector harness all day long. I have talked to Bowlsby about a new harness but I have not pulled the trigger on getting that done. This week I will. Paying too much attention to the six I suppose.
The injector plugs on two injectors kept pulling off or slipping out. The car was missing pretty badly.... I think I got one run in the late morning with only a little missing in the afternoon and I screwed that up by overcooking on a switchback in the "intestinal" portion of the course. 80.007 was the best I could do on 3 cylinders. I had fun though.

What a great time! Great course Trekkor! Its been a long time since I've been on an AX course. I'd forgotten how fast things were happening out there. Nobody gave me any post-2-1117899824.gif for having such an ugly car. I found out what I wanted to know:
1) Car understeers like hell.
2) Gotta fix it.
3) gotta go faster
4) Had a great time mueba.gif

Trekkor, kudos for the course design. I enjoyed it. I don't think it would have mattered if I had went the other way on the turn around. I struggled to get to an 82. Those 911s are too cumbersome biggrin.gif Yeh right, it was all driver ineptitude...much to learn.
It'll be interesting to see how different my 914 is once I get it squared away.
Thanks for posting a pic of my 911.

Glad you had a good time, Tony.

I had a good time doing the fun-runs.
Those old Hoosiers I put on the rears were very hard and hideous.
I can't believe we were running 75's consistantly. confused24.gif
