914World.com _ The Paddock _ Lightweight batteries for dedicated track cars?

Posted by: grantsfo Nov 13 2006, 10:44 PM

I know we have had some posts on lightweight batteris, but I cant seem to locate. What are you track and dedicated AX guys using? Links appreciated. Kicking off weight reduction phase II.

I have an Odyssey 680 in my 914 and 911, lots of places to buy them

Interesting topic this.

Like TimT i've gone the Odyssey 680 route, picked up the one without external metal shroud.

There's also Braille, no experience with them personally but the Suby boys rave about em.

Now the interesting bit. For a dedicated AX / Track toy is it lighter to remove the charging system & replace with a Optima red top Or just stick with the lighwieght batteries?

Not only lighter, but that pulley sucks some power from the motor. If removing it is 4 HP, that is a 5% gain alone in my stock engine biggrin.gif I've seen an odyssey drive dual electric fans in custom shrouds to cool both sides of the TIV, w/o case fan and associate pulley drag...carbed motor and not sure if alternator was hooked up either.

Yup drove 25 miles at night with broke fan belt. PC680 never missed a beat. Also run a Mallory Hyfire box which I am told is a power sucking pig.

You guys with your fancy-smanksi race batteries. Buy a 12 volt lawnmower battery for $30 and keep it charged. See this thread on mine...

Paul I am two years behind JP. and maybe 5 behind you in sick ass car mods.
Dedication takes a certain amount of time to develop.

The question was for a dedicated track car, to me that implies towing to the track.

Where did you see that? Is there someone else in this area also running this?

I'll share my secrets if you share yours biggrin.gif
I saw this in a blue gutted AX kart of a 914, kinda the ultimate woop your ass in sheeps clothing kinda ride. I think it was being towed by a bunch of scruffy dudes in a Ranchero. I never got a chance to meet them, but Bill & Nate, who work on my car when I can't, and are real cool guys, were part of the crew. Hah ha that was your car! Care to share with some photos of the stealth location of the battery mount?

We have a yellow top optima on the passengers side floor. Bolted down with a plastic box on it. I'd take some photos but I'm lacking a camera at the moment, my olympus crapped out.
