Saturday, August 7th is the date set for SMOG’s Mid-West 914 Classic 2004. It will begin at 8:30 am on the lawn of the Whitmore Lake Big Boy/Best Western Motel at Exit 53 off of US 23. There will be competition for various categories such as “best 6 cylinder car”, “best 4 cylinder car, early and late model”, “best paint job”, “people’s choice”, etc. There will also be plenty of time for bench racing and parts swapping so bring your rare parts and memorabilia to sell or trade. We expect to hand out awards and then break for lunch about 12 noon. The afternoon kicks off with the “Fun Run Straight To HELL!” (Hell, Michigan. that is) and a stop for ice cream before continuing on with the Fun Run. From Hell, we’ll saddle up and experience some of the best 914 roads lower Michigan has to offer. We’ll finish up at Yesterday’s Collection. If you’ve never been there, you’re in for a treat. They sell all sorts of automobile memorabilia, models, books, you name it. Oh, and they also have an ice cream parlor!
We look forward to seeing everyone there. Further details regarding the event will be posted as they become available. Rooms are available at the Best Western Motel at a discount if you mention you’re with the Porsche 914 group. The number is (734) 449-2058.
I'll be there.
Hmm.. that T-shirt looks familair...
Hi Curvie,
Good Job & Thanks for re-organizing the Mid-West meet. My sympathy goes out to Dave, since he is the orginator of this meet. I am sure Dave will surface once he feels able.
Lets get down to the business of making this meet a success. Looks like lots of help is behind Curvie (Tom) & the SMOG group. Looking forward to Aug. 7th.
Maybe I can still have that "smack down" with Tom Potter on the hood of
Rich's 914-8 - Alien - 928 powered car. Hope he comes.
Winner get's a bottle of "Two Buck Charlie Wine". Same bottle from last year. Potter didn't show up. Are you out there Potter???
Tom,
P.S.
I have some other news soon to be released. Hint, Hint (it's about the VW invite to YPSI, MI on May 23rd.)
Thomas,
I've edited your avatar a bit.
here it is: 125x83.
thanks,
sean

Curvie, BS Chairman and I will be there. That's 3.
I just picked up a 71 canary yellow 914 and it will be there too.
4 cars and counting......
Tom,
I had spoken with Dave about cooridinating the names of all the events so people would recognize them easier in the future. One common naming structure for West Coast/Mid West/East coast. My thoughts where in line with the VW guy's who have held similar events for 20 years with the same name. People in the VW circles still speak of XXX#10 10 years after the fact. I certaintly cant outright ASK you to follow along, but it would be greatly appreciated if we could speak about it over the phone. I still have your cell number.
Let me know.
B
According to map quest its 215 miles, and Michigan is 1 hour ahead...... Starts at 8:30am....um,...subtract....times the diameter of the moon.... Once I add all that up what does it mean
Either I get on the road at 3am or head up Friday night... ROAD TRIP...... Sean ya going???
Now to explain to the wife why after spending the entire week before on a "FAMILY" vacation with her side why I must go back to Michigan
- Garold
Hi I'm new to the board, I had lunch with Dave Kimple today @ monthly PCA meet. What a great guy. I'm so glad that the meet is going to still happen!! One other thing I'm picking up a 914/6 this friday I can't wait I'll see you guys in August
Can someone tell me what City this event will be held in?
Garold, The only penalty for being late is less time to and to the cars. The site is about an hour north of last years' site. Hope to see you there. As for Sean, he better show, or I'm crossing him off my Christmas card list!!
Robby,
Whitmore Lake, Michigan approx. (10) miles North of Ann Arbor, MI
Tom
tanner, welcome to the club!
Robby, we could caravan if you like.
Tom, I must have just missed your Christmas card last year then, huh?
OK, Here's progressively increasing detailed maps to the event:

you know I just remembered I have plans that weekend.
If we can get hubbys car going in time we would love to go! Sounds like a blast and we would love to meet yall!! We are north aways but not too far... doubt it will be anywhere near worthy of any trophy but it still would be fun to go!
Hope to see yall there!
Welcome jellybellybug,
My son & I drove down last year and we had a blast. We came down in my truck, so even if your 914 isn't up to it, try and make the show. From the cars I saw last year it was well worth the time.
Welcome jellybellybug!!
Hope you make it. I know it'll be worth the trip for you. Where are you located?
On behalf of the Southeast Michigan 914 Owners Group, I'd like to give a big thanks to Craig C. Laughlin and CAMP 914 for coming on board as a sponsor of the 2004 Mid-West 914 Classic.
Thanks, Craig!!
Hopefully, if mine is done I'll also try to make it. Just got it back from the body shop last week (total strip and repaint). Now the interior...suspension (5-lug) etc....oh what a list!
Hi Jim,
I just wanted to say don't not come just because your car isn't ready. Come anyway and meet the gang I'll bet that there will be some Chicagoland 914's coming that would'nt mind a support vehicle
I went last year in a non-914. I hope that I can make it in one this year. If not, look for a bright ass red hemi durango
Hemi?

Tom/Dick
You guys have done a GREAT job of setting up this event. The list of sponsors is very impressive. Just wanted to issue a public THANK YOU for your efforts. I am looking forward to seeing everyone again.
damm, how far is it from San Francsico?
if i go, i'd like to bring my car!
Andy
2368.4 Miles from San Francisco to Lake Whitmore, according to Microsoft Streets and Trips. So, at 90 mph, it'll take about 26 and a half hours...give or take. Think yer car could make it as a carry-on?
Garold, are you planning on driving up that morning? I'll drive wingman. (hopefully in a 914 of my very own, but we'll see)
Andy's not new to the long distance 914 drive. He drove my 914 from SF to Hot Springs, AR last year.
Hey Guys,
I just found out you guys (Rich) in the Milwaukee area can come across Lake Michigan (75 miles wide) and cut your drive time down. It's a new ferry boat service btwn. Milwaukee & Muskegon Mi. The cost is about $118 for automobiles & will save a lots of drive time around Chicago. One more reason for you guys to attend.
Tom
Previously we discussed taking the Badger across from Manitowoc WI (further north) but it has been a while. I'm still not sure if i'll be leaving from Minneapolis or from central WI, which would influence the decision of Milwaukee vs. Manitowoc. I'll go along with whatever is more convenient for the other drivers. It would certainly be fun to get a bunch of 914 owners together on the ride across. It's about the same driving distance from the twin cities to either Manitowoc or Milwaukee.
David
post the route from Mlps. to the event. Wife's up for the event if the car will go the distance. Verdict is still out on the car. Freeway driving is fine. In town is still an issue. The testing (over 600 miles since it hit the street) reveled a few minor problems. The Ferry sounds really Cool!
Dave, Rich & others.
Hope this comes through on the ferry boat to MI. newspaper article. I am so interested in seeing the Alien!!!!!!! I would gladly donate $$ for Rich to attend (with or without the Alien). We need Rich for a how to discussion.
I also been thinking, how about an invite to George H?? What a team Rich & George!!! Don't anyone flame me for these thoughts. Two guys with different views on our beloved 914's. What a show highlight that would be!!!!!
Just my 2-cents worth.
Tom

I'm ihin, I'm inhin, Im in I'm in I'm inhin!!!
Garold, if yer goin, I'm comming right thru your 'hood if you want to caravan. Going Friday.
Lets see here,
From Minneapolis to Manitowoc: Take 94 out of the cities, take 29 through Chippewa Falls and Wausau. Take 41 from Appleton to Manitowoc. Total driving distance: 320 miles. Mostly 4 lane hwy with about 50 or so miles on two lane hwy. Minimal in-city driving.
From Minneapolis to Milwaukee: Take 94 the entire way. All 4 lany hwy. Total driving distance: 336 miles.
Taking the badger out of Manitowoc costs $49 per vehicle each way and $47 per passenger or $78 round trip. This ferry lands in Ludington MI. It leaves Manitowoc at 1:15 PM and 12:30 AM (ouch).
I would personaly prefer taking the Manitowoc ferry but if anybody wants to meet in Milwaukee i certianly wouln't mind taking that ferry either.
Let me know what you guys think,
David
If you go thru Chippewa Falls stop downtown at the icecream shop...they make great sundays. Also they have working water fountains on the streets. Very nice town. The Mason shoe factory outlet is downtown too. ( don't stop if you really don't need shoes) Cray computers factory is there too.
Duluth to Whitmore Lake 717 miles. 11 hrs 31 mins. My Maping software shows the quickest route is south on hwy 53 to Eau Claire WI. south on I 94 to I 90 to Chicago. Around the tip of Lake Michigan then I 94 to Ann Arbor area to hwy 23 on in to Whitmore Lake area.
shortest is (as in not quickest is) hwy 2 through WI. (2 lane) to Hurley, highway 51 to Woodruff then to hwy 8. At wittenberg take 29 to Manitowac. Jump the ferry across Lake Michigan. Take 10 to I 35 south to I 96 to hwy 23. 582 miles 11 hrs.40 mins. shorter but longer...
Only longer by 9 minutes. Plus the ferry ride would be a great break in the driving to sit back and enjoy the boat ride. Plus you avoid the whole Chicago cluster@%. In my entire life I've never been able to drive through Chicago without getting caught in construction traffic jams.
On behalf of the S.M.O.G. I'd like to welcome Mueller Design Werks to the very distinguished list of 2004 Mid-West 914 Classic sponsors.
Thanks, Mike

Darn dude... you're doing great on the sponsors!
We need you on the WCC team next year
cheers,
Jeroen
I'm Sicilian and its not a good idea to say no to me.
Tom,
Can I attend this event ?
B
If anyone was unsure about whether or not they should attend this event, listen to this: Now, thanks to the generosity of GWN7, included in each goodie bag, along with everything else, will be a "mini bar" of 914 soap
Tom,
Didn't you guys put up a website for the MWC?
Where is it?????
cheers,
Jeroen
No website, just this stuff here. We're website challenged
Any assistance you could provide in this area would be greatly appreciated.
Can I come?
Seriously. I am trying to plan a trip up there about that time.
that'd be cool if you came!
I will know for sure in a few days.
I am going to coordinate it with a trip to Minnesota to visit David Chapman (Iamchappy) and to Traverse City to see my Dad!
But I would say count me in. How do I register?
there's a paypal link at the "Look who's coming" thread.
My wife just informed me that her work responsibilities (lots of travel during August/Sept/Oct) will impact our standard Sept/Oct vacation (sans kiddies). As in, "not this year". "Would you be upset?" she asked. "Why, hell yes!"
But that means that week of vacation I've been saving doesn't need to be saved anymore.
I *may* be able to make the event! Which would make up for missing WCC. You guys put on a great show up there. I have a few questions.
Is there an official events listing? Days etc?
How far is the event from Detroit (airport and stuff)?
Thanks for the info guys. See ya Friday evening.
On behalf of the 914 Southeast Michigan Owners Group I'd like to thank GPR German Parts and Restoration for their sponsorship of the 2004 Mid-West 914 Classic.

I will be attending. This will be the first major trip with it.

Beautiful car.
Sorry Guys, I can't make it.
Good news bad news thing. Doing a contract job in Aricebo Puerto Rico which origanaly was to have me back on the 6th. Now they have some "new" projects that could keep me here for a month or more.
Was looking forward to bringing #269 in all of it's naked/rusted glory on the rotiserie and entering it for "best paint" (aka bare metal) award
Enjoy, wish I was there? or is it Wish you were here.....
FYI I am looking for the elusive 914-6 in Puerto Rico while I am here
Cheers,
Sorry to hear we wont be able to lift a few with you buddy. We'll miss you.
Pay a visit to the Condado for me and waste a few $$$ on the craps tables.
Can you believe that's where the missus and I honeymooned?
Must be hot as h*ll there as I remember it, but maybe that was a special situation.
