How about it? Who's coming through Albuquerque and when? I'd like to head out on Thursday, but am open to suggestions.

Who's coming from the NE? Wanna meet in Vegas to combine forces for the assault on So Cal? IPB Image

I think Rich was planning on comming thru Vegas again this year with The Alien. I'm in for sure. We can probably count on Chris and his Nissan powered car. Maybe Steve will even have one of his teeners running by then.

Joe - are you driving or trailering your car?

If it turns out to be only you, Chris, Rich and I all driving our cars, we can do what should be a 4 - 5 hour drive in less than 3. Just think, combined we would have well over 1000 HP in our four 914's.

Posted by: rick 918-S Jan 6 2005, 10:42 PM

Ya, I'd like to leave Vegas on Thursday. I may need to pick up the wife at LAX.

Posted by: Gint Jan 6 2005, 10:56 PM

Any of the Colorado guys that go should be able to swing a meet in Vegas.

Posted by: Series9 Jan 6 2005, 10:59 PM

I'll have the wife, two friends, a Suburban and a trailer, but the 914 will be driven on the fun segments.

If you guys want to leave Vegas on Thursday, maybe we could come in on Wednesday night for a little IPB Image .

I'm getting excited. The doors will be back from paint on Sunday!

Colorado - Utah - Texas - Florida. All points east of LA are welcome.

There aint a snowball's chance in hell my car will be done for WCC05. But with any luck, I'll make it. And if I go, I'll hitch a ride with somebody.

Posted by: Series9 Jan 6 2005, 11:27 PM

Gint, you're welcome to ride with us in the 'burb. Come down to ABQ on Tuesday and we'll IPB Image , then to Vegas on Wednesday for some IPB Image , then SoCal on Thursday for, you guessed it, IPB Image .

BTW, the trailer I'm bringing will easily carry two 914s.

I just might take you up on that Joe if none of the Colorado guys go. But I'm betting Ferg will go at least. My decision to go isn't definite yet anyway. We'll see....

Rich, the IPB Image in ABQ invite goes for you as well. If you come my way, it shouldn't make your drive much longer at all.

If you guys are headed to Vegas, then you must be headed across I-40 so you'll be travelling through Flagstaff. I'm hoping I'll make it to WCC2005 so I'll be happy to join the caravan. If I can't go then I'm for sure up for a lunch stop with the gang.

We can plan on lunch in Flagstaff. I was actually planning on contacting the guys in Flag to try to make some arrangements.

Hopefully we'll have some others join up in Albuquerque the night before we leave for Vegas.

Posted by: Series9 Jan 25 2005, 08:01 PM

Here's the plan for anyone wishing to join the southern caravan:

We are leaving Albuquerque on Wednesday morning (20th) headed for Las Vegas. We'll be planning on lunch in Flagstaff and hope to pick up a couple more for the caravan.

We'll be leaving Vegas on Thursday morning after joining up with the NE group the night before.

Anyone wishing to arrive in Albuquerque on Tuesday night (19th) will be treated to free beer and grilled food at my house, as well as free lodging (we have lots of floor/couch space).

Please check in so we know you're coming. I know there have to be some from OK and TX. IPB Image

Rick is planning on leaving Vegas on Thursday morning.

Our schedule is based on the assumption that the NE caravan will likely form around him and the desire to have spare time built into the trip for possible....ummm...mechanical displeasures.

I know that Vegas Racer had hoped you would join us. Just skip on Thursday too. Priorities... IPB Image

Posted by: VegasRacer Jan 26 2005, 03:07 AM

I have my vacation request signed and stamped. I can leave as early as Monday.
By Thursday I will be chomping at the bit. IPB Image

Chris - you are looking rather pale. I think you may have a fever too. IPB Image
Perhaps we should rush you to a 'special doctor' in California.

Rich & Joe - you guys make the call on the schedule.

i might be coming from maryland with the 914, engine stuff is coming along nicely, i figure with a suby engine it would be like driving a newer car. the biggest concerns would be chassis, but most of those are easy to fix, the worst case thing would be a tranny cv problem but i will bring a spare cv.

I've got too many reasons not to go on Thursday...
1. had to pull strings to get into overlapping classes, tues & thurs. I miss an hour a week of a 3.5 hour class.
2. the extra cash to be out-of-town a whole day x2 'cause girls don't pay for crap.
3. the coed I wanted to bring IPB Image
I can miss Mondays classes no problem.
So I'm a no go on Thursday.

Posted by: Series9 Jan 26 2005, 10:34 PM

Scott: you'd be making the longest trek. You'll be on the NE route and may (likely) be on your own until Ohio.

CptTripps: Looks like it's you and Scott until you can meet up with Rick.

Chris: That absolutely sucks! Please figure out another way. We want you with us for the assault on Ventura.

To Scott and Cpt: please take the chance. It's an adventure you won't regret. Once you hook up with another member, you'll have the mechanical back up you need.

okay i am tring to figure this out to be as safe and sure as possible. mapquest says its 40 hours of driving, i figure i am good for 24 hours with 4 hours of naps thrown in so in 1 day i can be about half way there. 914 rs you have a pm. i would not mind taking breaks at where ever i can meet up with someone. i would just need to get to their place 4 to 8 hours before they leave. but that adds lots of time to the trip.

so 914 rs when do you plan on leaving NM, if its wed, i could be there to leave with you but crash tues night. if it is tues pm i could still do it but i would be a zombie.

still planning this out but tring to make plans to meet up. check back for updates.

I should have open driveway space, and a fully stocked Sears tool center in the garage wink.gif

I also might have flat space and MIG available from a body shop friend, depends on his work load.

Posted by: Travis Neff Mar 14 2005, 01:11 PM

I *may* have access to a cabin at munds park (just south of Flag), sleeps a bunk of folks. Just a mile or so off the freeway.

Posted by: Series9 Mar 14 2005, 01:19 PM

The schedule:

Tuesday the 19th: Travelers will be hosted as my house and treated to beer and grilled food.

Wednesday the 20th: Depart ABQ for Vegas. Lunch in Flagstaff around 1pm and hopefully join up with the AZ crowd. Finish the day in Vegas for a night of fun. Join the NE crowd in Vegas.

Thursday the 21st: Depart Vegas for Camarillo.

If all goes well, we arrive in Camarillo 24 hours early for some relaxation and maybe a Friday drive. If all doesn't go well, we have that 24 hours to deal with break downs.

Rich ? Any word from the boss on what your plans are going to be? When will you land in Vegas? When do you want to leave for California (Thurs or Fri)? Which hotel do you plan to stay at?

I've been unusually quite about my travel plans. I've been trying work around several problems that arose in the past several months. My job is consuming my life, I have a new manager, we had several unexpected bills arrive, etc. The final issue ended my travel plans.
Everyone is healthy and there are no personal issues to worry about, just stuff happening with the kids and their friends. My oldest son's girl friend just turned 18. she is still in high school, graduating this year and signed up for collage with my son. She's a good kid with no issues. She is a ward of the state. The home she was living in for the last 3-4- years gave her the boot on her birthday.
She had no place to go. Sandy and I had many moral discussions about her moving in with us. We didn't want the kids to be forced into more of a relationship than they are ready for.
After watching this sick and demented thing unfold over the last 3 weeks I finally had to step in. Here's a kid that should be concentrating on finishing school and getting ready for a graduation and she out trying to sign up for welfare, and get on a low income list for a slum apartment! WTF is wrong with a family that will do that to a child! I'm sick and heart broken for her. We are now moving her into our home.
We spent last evening shopping for bedroom furniture, buying pink paint, and moving my sons computer stuff out of the spare room. As much as I love and trust my kids they are still kids. So were going to have a period of adjustment and I just can't walk away from that now. I want them to understand they need to have personal time and just because they are in the same house they are not stuck together. I hope they are able to put this behind them and move tword their lifes goals.

This club is made up of real people as is our family. Growing up I never had a real family. So I know you will all understand When I put the family I have now first. When things settle in here Sandy and I will hop in the Alien and fly out to see you all!

Thanks for letting me vent.

Posted by: vsg914 Mar 17 2005, 09:26 AM

You sir, have my utmost respect as a father and as a human being. My prayers will include you and your family. You have done the right thing. smilie_pokal.gif clap.gif pray.gif

Posted by: ThinAir914 Mar 17 2005, 10:39 AM

We've had the privilege of having our son-in-law and daughter-in-law live with us in our home in a similar fashion. They didn't live with our kids, they just all lived at the same house. Even so, there are pressures and strains involved in sorting out the relationships that can make it more challenging than when the living arrangement is separate.

You and your family will continue in my prayers as you work through this. I believe you will never regret making this kind of investment in that young lady's life. The fact that you won't be able to make the caravan and WCC is disappointing, but there will be other opportunities.

The invitation for lunch, breakfast, whatever in Flagstaff is always open whenever you "fly out here" in the Alien.

Right now I'm thinking 3 or 4 from PHX, 6 with me from ABQ and BWI and who ever comes from Flagstaff.

So what? Maybe 12?

Lunch at a cool downtown venue close to I-40 would be perfect.

I just did a quick search on the Internet. There were a couple of places downtown on Freemont street in the $45 range. Two better options were the Fiesta on Rancho Road or the Palace Station on Sahara for about $10 more. If you want cheap and safe, the Primadona Casino or Buffalo Bills 40 miles outside of town on the Calif state line were both under $30. Motel 6 and the like were all $80 - $100 in Vegas.

I have a feeling you're about to screw up the departure schedule, because I don't think we're leaving Vegas without you.

Give me some details.

We here we go.... I'm taking some chances with the kids. My oldest is 18, His GF lives here now, My youngest is 15, he likes to jump out of windows and do crazy things like that.... ohmy.gif wacko.gif I'm not too happy about that Yack.gif Their staying home. School, jobs, and music are keeping them here.

Sandy is flying out to meet me. I need to pick her up in L.A. on Friday. She is flying out from Vegas the following Wednesday.

I just posted a request for two weeks off. I'm absolutely swamped here with work. I work out of my house. My manager is 180 miles away in an office. (sux to be him slap.gif ) I have my new manager coming to spend the day with me Wednesday. That should be interesting. cool_shades.gif There is no way I can quit early any day this week to work on the car. That means come friday night it's Asses and elbo's to get it ready to go.

The car is still on jack stands in the garage. It's still damaged from the driveway incident last summer. I need to get and install a new regulator in my bosch alternator, New Optima is in the garage, (not in the car yet) I need to repair and paint my trunk lid and rear lock panel before loading it on the trailer. I'm driving out by myself.

I figure I can make Denver before I need a nap. With the work I have ahead of me I won't be able to get to Vegas before Thursday. So if anyone is left in town I'd like to Caravan the rest of the way with ya. aktion035.gif driving.gif

Posted by: Series9 Apr 11 2005, 10:41 PM

And I think I have a lot to do... ohmy.gif

What can I say. Get to Vegas as soon as you can. I can't speak for anyone else, but I will wait. I would really like to be in Camarillo befor dark on Thursday, but I'm not leaving Vegas until you arrive.

Imagine that... 9000 miles on the odometer. Ya right........ So considering it's friday and I have to leave by sunday night or cancel, I guess I'm driving out.

Wish me luck. How long does it take to get AAA?

I'm really depressed sad.gif

On a lighter note. I started the Alien up for the first time since last fall. It ran Great!

Joe O'Brien and Liz (his passenger) left Flagstaff just after 1 p.m. headed for Las Vegas. We had a hurried, but nice lunch together. Joe is sweating making it to Las Vegas in time for getting the car into the shop.

There was some sort of mixup with the departure of the caravan from Albuquerque this morning so the Suburban with Scott Thacher's teener on the trailer were probably about an hour behind Joe & Liz. Scotts's Subaru/914 is still doing just fine, it's just on the trailer because there was no point in driving the Suburban and the teener.

Joe's 914RS is also doing well. Cruized along nicely at 75 and not a single problem.

It's too bad that lunch ended up being such a small crowd, but there's still an opportunity when the gang head's back East again. Just let me know!

Here's a pic of Joe & Liz as they were about to leave Flagstaff.

I am glad everyone made it home and enjoyed themselves at WCC 2005. Maybe next year my wife and I can attend in Portland???? There always the events in August and October of this year. It seems I may be in Indianna somewhere around the middle of October. Anyway, I am jealous, envious, etc of everyone who attended. Nice to get a glimpse of the different 914s'

I currently do not have any 914's, but a lot of parts for a 914-6 which I will start to build over the next two years. Had to downsize for the move to Flagstaff, AZ which will be completed sometime in the middle of the spring. Closing escrow in May but do not have any shop to build the project. Have to depend on Ernie D for guidance for needed services in Flagstaff.

Next year I can provide support via trailer, tools, place to stay, or whatever for the people coming from the Southland and going up to Portland.

Should have my garage setup for assembling but not the detailed work like welding, etc.

I want to be involved next year.

Again, thanks for letting me participate through reading of the thread(s).
