So, what ideas did you guys have already?

Posted by: Mike Bellis Jun 5 2016, 08:42 AM

Spitballin'

Cruise to Yosemite Valley, last I checked it was $20 entry. May have gone up by now. The back route also has us going over the 9,600' pass.

June lake loop.

There are tons of great roads out there that will take some recon.

Hotel pricing isn't bad until mid June, into July.

Mike,
How far is Stockton from our target area? I have a friend whose brother is a semi-famous chef with a restaurant there... It's fine dining, and we might be able to cut a deal. But if it's too far, then no.

We should do a gimmick rally for one of the drives too. Ala my photo rally at Tahoe in 2010.

Stockton is too far from the target area. Gimmick rally is a great idea.

I would like to develop a multi destination cruise. Example: we all start together and stop at a lunch break or photo opp. Half the group continues on a long ride, other half has a shorter ride to a destination. Then we all end up back at the hotel. Details need to be worked out but that's the basic idea.

I'm also thinking about starting on Wednesday for registration, with continued registration on Thursday. Maybe put together some kind of early event Thursday morning.

I spoke to Marty today and he is in for helping along with Djaden.

Posted by: ConeDodger Jun 5 2016, 11:57 AM

Cool...

At Tahoe, I was shooting for a more family friendly thing. The photo rally was basically, a list of things that people should shoot a picture of if they saw it. Like a wooden animal or pine cone up, pine cone down. People seemed to have a great time with it. In fact, I think it was either Andrew or Rand? who got everything.

Posted by: Andyrew Jun 5 2016, 01:19 PM

I think Rand got most everything being the photographer.. I got a bunch IIRC.

I digress. My thoughts for events to occupy the time are below.

1. Poker run
2. Mammoth Brewery
3. Bodie Ghost Town site visit (Possibly discuss with the Rangers about doing a photoshoot there?)
4. Visit Mono Lake
5. Visit Yosemite (Not yellowstone) valley floor, Possibly split off for a hike for those that want it? Some killer hikes/water falls in the area.
6. Glacier Point
7. Mariposa Giant Sequoias (If open)
8. Scouted drives that are recommended with routes for those with extra time
9. Casino time? Not sure if this.. Not my cup of tea...
10. I am not sure what is involved in a hill climb race, I imagine way more than possible and above our financial means, but maybe its something to look into?
11. Timed concourse style rally.

I think restraunts will take some research as well.

For those that are staying longer we could recommend a trip out to Murphy's either on their way up or back or on a boring day. There is a strip of winery tasting rooms and nice restaurants that would make for quite an interesting lunch/evening for a small group.

Jamestown is an old miners town and has some cool interesting history, Its on its way to/from Murphys.

Just spitballing idea's. Its an area packed full of roads. And I dont know anything about the Nevada side...

Posted by: Mike Bellis Jun 5 2016, 01:37 PM

I heard the last 3 miles into Bodie is a gravel road. We will need to scout it out.

Posted by: Andyrew Jun 5 2016, 01:53 PM

If its gravel then we pace the cars 200ft so no rock chips happen.

But it does look like your right. This may need to be optional, as I know I wouldnt want to miss it. Still would be cool if we could get the rangers to let us take some pictures.

Good idea...

2. Mammoth Brewery

Very good idea

3. Bodie Ghost Town site visit (Possibly discuss with the Rangers about doing a photoshoot there?)

Not sure I would drive my car on a gravel road under any circumstances. Too low...

4. Visit Mono Lake

Good idea

What? It's just a little longer drive right? evilgrin.gif

6. Glacier Point

Good idea

7. Mariposa Giant Sequoias (If open)

Does it close for snow?

8. Scouted drives that are recommended with routes for those with extra time

Ok...

9. Casino time? Not sure if this.. Not my cup of tea...

Me either. I've got casinos all around me and I only go for the shows and restaurants.

10. I am not sure what is involved in a hill climb race, I imagine way more than possible and above our financial means, but maybe its something to look into?

Timing equipment. Insurance. We would have to pair with the PCA 924 SIG which isn't a bad idea anyway as they will give us money!

11. Timed concourse style rally.

Yes...

My thoughts were to NOT run timing equipment to lessen insurance costs (I know that bumps things up incredibly), but simply get a road closed for us to play around with half a day. Each person goes up, then down the road. We could give each driver a walky as they go out, if something happens they walky for help or we send a chase party 3 minutes later. Just a thought.

Care to elaborate about the PCA thing? I am not familiar with their involvement and what they can and can not do for us.

Sure, We have a very inactive SIG. That is, a 914 Special Interest Group in PCA. Bob Saville on the East coast is the 914 SIG rep to the PCA. We can get PCA money and insurance if we run the event as a 914 SIG event. I can contact Bob and see what the requirements are. PCA would like very much for the SIG groups to be more active.

Sounds like it's worth a shot. What could be the catch? PCA, what would they want in exchange?

Posted by: ConeDodger Jun 5 2016, 06:16 PM

Mike,
I will research it and get back to you. I think going forward, when we have a subtopic like PCA 914 SIG we should add a different topic in this forum. That is the way it is designed. So we can put "opening BBQ" etc...

Posted by: Mike Bellis Jun 5 2016, 06:28 PM

I'm down for PCA involvement but don't want to isolate the other 914 owners. Lets see what happens.

Posted by: ConeDodger Jun 5 2016, 06:38 PM

I don't think PCA membership is required.

I'm curious if they can send us swag smile.gif

Contacting Bob would be fantastic Rob!

It would be very cool if we could pull this remote WCR out of our ass and make a pretty decent event!

Im not a member at the moment but would happily join if the membership count per group helps.

Posted by: ConeDodger Jun 5 2016, 10:42 PM

I'm a 15 year member and have been on the board of two different regions. They'll listen... I've sent a message to Bob. I'll get back to you when I hear from him...

Posted by: ConeDodger Jun 6 2016, 08:36 AM

By the way, as you can see, discussing plans for the event on the open forum gets you lots of "arm chair" planners who naysay your event but make no substantive contribution.
I'd say just avoid talking about the event on the public forum until we start to publically promote it for registration purposes.

Posted by: Mike Bellis Jun 6 2016, 01:54 PM

I just heard from my buddy and Diablo PCA VP that Mammoth requires permits with the city for PCA events. If they see 30 or so 914's coming into town we might get some grief without a permit.

Posted by: Andyrew Jun 6 2016, 02:46 PM

Sounds good, I was planning on contacting the city and the police department to let them know we would be coming through anyways.

Getting a permit would just make it that much more official.

Posted by: Andyrew Jun 6 2016, 02:46 PM

Does your buddy have any contacts in Mammoth that we could use?

Posted by: Mike Bellis Jun 6 2016, 07:59 PM

Maybe Brian (Wyvern here) will chime in. He may be able to help or guide us through the PCA system if we can get sanctioned. Oakhurst is in our region and he possibly could help more. maybe? I have invited him here. Since he owns a 914 maybe we could talk him into attending?

Posted by: Wyvern Jun 6 2016, 08:32 PM

^^^ Hi Mike & Hello to all.
Brian Adkins here, I am the current VP of PCA Diablo Region (in transition / grooming process for next Prez)
Proud 914 owner (other Porsches as well)
I am very active in not only our events but also on in the Zone (I am Zone 7).

I do understand some / most of the PCA "stuff" and also honestly understand it isn't for everyone and has its focus and "systems". If you needed a hosting Region or help with Zone I can at the very least give you info & intel

I am also a restaurant consult for the largest foodservice distributor, work with / have at least contacts with restaurants, country clubs, hotels and prisons.

Not wanting to promise and I am not an over-promiser ... but if I can be of help, to quote Mike maybe counsel give some info.

Posted by: Andyrew Jun 6 2016, 08:54 PM

Awesome!!

That reminds me I should contact the PCA Zone 7 Yosemite Region.

Brian, is that something that maybe we should leave to you as Zone VP?

I havent been involved in the Zone 7 Yosemite region in 10 years... Nice group of people back then.

What sort of questions should we be asking? Where do we start? Who do we start with?

Thanks for your help/involvement!

Posted by: ConeDodger Jun 6 2016, 10:19 PM

Oh my, we have a coincidence of some magnitude. Are you the Brian Adkins that I hauled this Euro Horn butterfly all the way from Nevada for?
Rob...

Posted by: Wyvern Jun 6 2016, 10:30 PM

The biggest pro of going with PCA is indeed the insurance ... but then there are some events that then become difficult . Speed or Timed for speed events are a different insurance than a meeting or even what they call a "moving" event.
The Zone is really pushing for more multi Region events (as Parade and Treffin are just getting silly ... more $ and less people ... they actually get run of the town and all hotels are booked through then / the event)
So events like CRAB that was just held or our Car Show is heavily cross marketed.

Your exposure on PCA, Zone and region will certainly help spread the word ..
Also the host region MAY be able to have you use their "Registration system" as that can be a button / widget pushed to all above.
Yosemite Prez is Chuck Pierce . to be honest the best method I have found contacting him or anyone on the board (including Sandy) is to use their "contact us" section on their website http://yos.pca.org/contact.html

Have an outline and have a plan (also not passing a bunch of work to someone else is a good plan) And present it as a "lets grow together" not just we want the money.

I am on our DE team, and must tell you asking PCA and Dealers / sponsors ... "what do you want" , "what would you like to see" often gets you MUCH more that giving your $#s, sometimes something you haven't even thought of.
